Round of 16

Belgium topped Group H, but they never looked especially good in doing so, and in a stronger group there is a good chance they never would have made it to the Round of 16. They're here now, though, and if they can rediscover the form and flair that saw them labelled dark horse favourites ahead of the World Cup, they have the talent on paper to cause a lot of trouble for the hard working Americans. Judging the Belgians solely on their group stage form, though, it's hard to see them as favourites today.

The United States, on the other hand, have played some solid if not especially inspiring football. They owe their advancement in large part to Germany's demolition of Portugal in Group G that helped them to go through on goal differential, but their play alone would have been enough to see them through in many groups that weren't quite so tough. Now they get their reward for somewhat fortuitously escaping from this World Cup's group of death—a Belgium side that on current form is very beatable.
