Liverpool's B-team impress as they move on the quarter-finals of the Capital One Cup with a promising win over Bournemouth.

Liverpool 1 Clyne 17'
Bournemouth 0

Goals! Clean sheets! Winning! Excitement! Yes, friends, Liverpool scored a goal and then didn't immediately concede an equalizer. In fact, they held on to their clean sheet for the full ninety minutes, leading to a win and advancement in the Capital One Cup.

Jürgen Klopp rang the changes for the mid-week game, and rightly so, as several players were showing signs of wear after three matches in eight days. Injuries at striker and lack of depth at fullback meant Divock Origi and Nathaniel Clyne remained in the XI, but every other player was changed from the game against Southampton, with competitive debuts handed to 20-year-old Conor Randall and 19-year-old Cameron Brannagan. There was also a return to the first team for João Carlos Teixeira, who pressed on from midfield regularly to join Roberto Firmino, Jordon Ibe, and Origi in the attack. Kolo Toure and Dejan Lovren were the center-backs of choice in front of Adam Bogdan in goal.

The tone was set early for Liverpool by Firmino, closing down the opponent like a madman and pulling a shot wide after just 10 seconds, setting the standard for a high-octane performance that would only miss that finishing touch. The high press got overplayed minutes later, and Bournemouth found themselves with a great chance from 15 yards, but were unable to take advantage, the shot blocked in the end.

After a cagey opening 15 minutes, the home side took the lead through a surprisingly energetic Clyne. Divock Origi turned and skinned Sylvain Distin down the right wing, then cut it back for Firmino, who expertly played in Teixeira with a deft touch. Adam Smith then showed terribly bad form, clearing the Portuguese starlet's cheeky back heel finish off the line, but Clyne was there to cooly slot home the rebound. It was a gorgeous attack with penetration and precision, and the goal was well-earned.

The Reds did their best to give up their customary equalizer minutes later, as a slip from Randall gave Junior Stanislas the opportunity to head on goal from 4 yards, but Bogdan made a strong save at his near post, keeping the home side in front. If the hosts were fortunate then, they weren't soon after when Kolo Toure found himself the latest addition to Liverpool's lengthy injury list, forced to leave the pitch with a hamstring problem and replaced by Martin Skrtel.

Despite the enforced change, Liverpool closed out the half on the front foot. The second half, though, started slowly, only coming to life when Firmino intercepted a pass deep in Bournemouth's half and drove at goal. Unfortunately for the attacker, he hooked his shot a yard wide of the post. Five minutes later Lucas came on for Brannigan, and with that move Liverpool took complete control of proceedings. The visitors were barely allowed inside the home side's half, and the hosts put together a string of chances that easily could have resulted in another goal: Randall and Ibe combined excellently only for the flat cross to be cleared right in front of Origi, Lucas tested Adam Federici with a belter from 25 yards, Teixeira did the same with a free kick from 20, and a Lucas and Origi counter nearly counted as the Brazilian's cross missed the Belgian by mere inches two yards out.

Bournemouth had one good chance to level the match as it entered injury time, but Bogdan was again on hand when needed, securing Liverpool's advancement.

All told, it was another improved performance from Liverpool, something all the more remarkable for the fact that Firmino and Clyne notwithstanding, it was a full B-side against Premier League opposition. The pressing forced the visitors into numerous mistakes and restricted their chances to a tiny handful. On offense, both fullbacks were involved high up the pitch, best illustrated by Clyne finding himself as the most forward player on a rebound and netting the winner. This opened up play for the home side, allowing them to combine more effectively than they have at almost any point over the past 16 months.

Roberto Firmino was the clear man of the match, displaying deft touches, vision, effective dribbling, and a boundless will to close down and harry opponents. Adam Bogdan made a handful of solid saves when called upon and looked assertive in his area. Nathaniel Clyne put in a surprisingly energetic performance at the left side of defense after a few off performances, capping it with a goal, while Jordon Ibe had his best outing so far this season

Of the youths, Teixeira more than the others showed that he is definitely ready for more first team football in the coming weeks, even if he faded somewhat in the second half. Randall had a tough night in the first half, but was much improved in the second, while Brannagan put in a decent in somewhat anonymous performance in the middle.

Origi, on the other hand, was better but still not as sharp as you'd like your only striker to be, doing his best work when coming deep or wide rather than when he stayed high and tried to lead the line. Lovren had a solid defensive game, even if a few nervy moments and his distribution left something to be desired, while Joe Allen didn't do much to stand out, and the stark difference in proficiency at the deep midfield role was made abundantly clear when Lucas came on and shut the midfield down with a veteran's performance.

Injuries continue to be a concern, as does burnout for players at positions with little depth, but this match seemed another step in the right direction for Jürgen Klopp and his charges, as the high-intensity press was for the first time joined by coherent attacking movement and an understanding of what to do with the ball in transitions and on offense. And now, Chelsea looms.

After Jürgen Klopp's first victory in English football, we want to know who you think were Liverpool's best and worst performers against Bournemouth and who your Man of the Match was.

There wasn't much in the way of goals, but Liverpool are through to the next round of the Capital One Cup in normal time with a clean sheet. There were quite a few changes—nine to be exact—but Nathaniel Clyne's goal from a rebound was enough to secure the win.

Now let us know how you saw it. Hitting the thumbs up button is a vote to move the player up the list—or to help keep them on top. Hitting thumbs down is a vote to push that player closer to the bottom. It's half Man of the Match poll and half power ranking, and we want to use it to find out who you think played well after each Liverpool match and, at the other end, who you'd maybe like to see given the next game off.

At the end of the month we'll go through the results of that month's polls to help choose the Liverpool Offside’s Player of the Month and, come next May, those monthly results will help to determine your Player of the Season for 2015-16.

Liverpool finally manage to hold on to a narrow advantage, beating Bournemouth 1-0 and advancing to the next round of the League Cup.

Liverpool 1: Clyne 17'
Bournemouth 0:

Pre-match thoughts: Klopp makes NINE changes to the line-up, showing just how much he deeply cares about this <strike>throwaway </strike>hugely important competition. In the process, he managed to dust off Joao Carlos Teixeira, who had been tucked away in a cellar beneath Anfield. He had to go down there with a torch as the lights had gone out. So had the stairs.

Firmino gets off a shot within the first 20 seconds. More of this please.

Lots of space on both ends in the early going. Allen has his pocket picked which leads to a great early chance for Bournemouth. Thankfully, Bogdan was up to the challenge.

Clyne!!! Opens up his Liverpool account with a well-taken goal after some brilliant build-up play. Origi broke at pace, played it to Firmino, who played Teixeira through. Teixeira nearly scores on the cheekiest of backheels, only to be cleared off the line before Clyne put it away for good. The attack was, dare I say, "cool." 1-0 to the Scousers!

The League Cup claims another victim. Kolo Toure limps off after half an hour with an apparent hamstring injury. Defender and part-time pirate Martin Skrtel comes on.

Halftime: Liverpool showed a few brilliant flashes on one end, and a bit of luck not to concede on the other. Both sides have 6 shots, 4 on target. Liverpool probably need to score 1 or 2 more to ensure victory (especially with Lovren roaming the pitch), as shocking as that concept might seem on paper. The match dragged at times, but it is fun to watch the yutes press like crazy. And man, Teixeira, soooo close to nabbing his first Liverpool goal, both with the backheel and later with a shot into the side netting just before the half.

Firmino with another narrow miss. If Liverpool don't advance tonight, he'll certainly have a few regrets, with four good shots on goal so far.

Lucas on for Brannagan. Hopefully Papa Lucas can help see this game out.

If the sides were evenly matched in the first half, Liverpool have had the best of it in the second.

Lallana is the final substitute, on for Roberto Firmino. Firmino was a giant among men today, but just couldn't manage to grab his first goal.

Bournemouth's last ditch effort goes wanting, and that should do it for the Reds.

Full Time: This time Liverpool score first and hold on for the nervy victory. It was a well-deserved first win for the new boss, especially with such a thin, heavily-rotated squad. Today marked a return to form for Jordon Ibe, and some stand-out performances for Teixeira and Firmino. Both Teixeira and Firmino were unlucky not to open up their scoring accounts for the Reds. The yutes acquitted themselves well, and the team as a whole grew into the game as it progressed.

Liverpool have pulled in front of Bournemouth in the League Cup thanks to Nathaniel Clyne's first goal for the club. The play started on the right flank with Divock Origi turning his marker and getting to the endline. His cut back pass found Roberto Firmino, who then slotted a pass inside the box for Joao Carlos Teixeira. Teixeira's back heel attempt at goal was cleared off the line right into the path of Clyne who buried the chance. Watch a clip of the goal below.

Three Liverpool youngsters are set to be called into action for Liverpool when they take on Bournemouth at Anfield in the Capital One Cup.

With tired legs and injuries impacting Liverpool at multiple positions, the Reds were always going to start a few youth players against Bournemouth in the Capital One Cup. The only question was which ones, and it turns out fans won't have to wait for the teamsheets to be released to find out.

According to the Liverpool Echo, there will be starts for Joao Carlos Teixeira, Connor Randall, and Cameron Brannagan. All three have reportedly impressed new manager Jürgen Klopp since he arrived at the club two weeks ago, and as a result all three have been tabbed for their first starts of the season.

For 20-year-old right back Randall, it will be his first senior appearance, with Liverpool's lack of depth at the fullback position giving the local talent being a chance to show what he can do in place of Nathaniel Clyne, whose performances have dipped as he's shown signs of exhaustion in recent weeks.

Randall getting a start, despite the fact Clyne clearly needs a break, is a mild surprise. Less surprising is that Brannagan will start somewhere in the midfield after Klopp spent a portion of his pre-match press conference singling out the 19-year-old for praise. He previously made a substitute appearance against Bordeaux.

Least surprising, perhaps, is that there will also be a first start at Anfield for Teixeira. After recovering from a string of serious injuries, the now 22-year-old spent last season on loan with Brighton & Hove Albion, where he scored six goals in 35 appearances and was named young player of the year.

Many Liverpool fans had high hopes for him heading into the season, particularly following a few strong showings in pre-season, but with the player not able to make the cut for the Europa League squad it appeared he wasn't going to be in former manager Brendan Rodgers' plans for the season.

While Brannagan is expected to come on either for the suspended James Milner or to give Emre Can a breather in a midfield likely to be anchored by Joe Allen, Teixeira will be given a more attacking role, perhaps coming in for the struggling Philippe Coutinho.

Manager Jürgen Klopp is planning to make some changes for the Capital One Cup match on Wednesday, but one player who won't be an option is Daniel Sturridge, who remains sidelined.

Daniel Sturridge collided with Jordon Ibe in training ahead of Liverpool's match with Tottenham on October 17th. He was kept out for, it was said at the time, precautionary reasons and expected to only be sidelined for a day or two. He was expected back to face FC Sion in Europe the following Thursday.

Nearly two weeks later, the striker still hasn't returned to training, and he has been officially ruled out of facing Bournemouth in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday. He is almost certain to miss Chelsea on the weekend, too, and there are growing concerns that it could be much longer than that before Sturridge is again available.

"There is nothing really new on this," Jürgen Klopp said at his pre-match press conference today. "Daniel's not available for tomorrow. It's getting better, but not quick enough to change the situation. He's not in training yet. I saw him five minutes ago working in the gym, but he's not ready to think about normal football training."

That he's even in the gym, though, is perhaps a positive sign following rumours that he could be out indefinitely as the medical staff were struggling to even identify the root cause of his knee troubles. Still, whenever he does return, few Liverpool fans will be willing to count on the oft-injured striker staying fit the rest of the way.

Sturridge managed just 17 appearances last season—12 of them in the league—as he struggled with a string of related injuries. After undergoing surgery that was supposed to have solved the underlying issue, so far this year he has made just two appearances for the club, both in the league. It's a record that makes for grim reading.

Since arriving at Liverpool in January of 2013, Sturridge has missed more than 300 days and 55 games due to injury. And while Sturridge won't be playing on Wednesday, a few other Liverpool players could join him on the sidelines as Klopp looks to avoid wearing out some of his key starters by rotating in a few fringe players.

"It's my first time playing in this cup, so it's a very important game to me," said the manager. "But I know we had three games in the last eight or nine games, so now we have to change. We have suspended players in Milner, we have injured players, players with little problems we're not going to risk so we will see.

"We will see who can train today, who can train tomorrow, and then we can make a team with for sure at least a young player or two, but not because this is not an important cup for me. No. I really want to win, and so this is why we change. I want to win. I don't want to give up before we have to. That's pretty easy for me."
