Recent history suggested that Liverpool should have collapsed after conceding an early goal at Crystal Palace on Saturday, but an excellent, composed second half gave them a win that manager Brendan Rodgers felt was coming.

After yet more calamity at the back gifted Fraizer Campbell the opening goal on Saturday night at Selhurst Park, it was easy to fear the worst. This was the sight of one of last season's enduring memories, and this season's rock bottom. There was an aura of doubt and fear when Campbell and Dwight Gayle, who's scored against Liverpool in each of the previous three meetings since Palace earned promotion, danced in celebration, signalling that another painful result was on its way.

But getting to the break 1-0, even if they should have at least had a chance at an equalizer on a clear penalty that was denied, gave hope, and Liverpool's refusal to rattle gave them a platform to dominate the second half and push on to earn the win. Their confidence after getting the goals was equally impressive, as Brendan Rodgers' side killed any chance of a Palace comeback.

It was clear to Rodgers that his side could respond, and the manager was impressed with a second half showing that saw them take the lead and effectively end the match off with a controlled display:

"The players turned it around. We just felt at half-time that we weren't creating enough chances. I felt we needed to be more aggressive. We started the game not as aggressively as we would have wanted. They have players who want to compete. We felt once we shortened the pitch in the second half, we moved the game higher up the field, kept the ball and it was only going to be a matter of time. I thought the players showed great composure and great character in that second half."

Rarely in the first half of the season was such confidence on display, with the win at White Hart Lane one of the few matches in which Liverpool appeared to be in complete control. Even then the scoreline was more comfortable than today's, and recent history against Spurs has Liverpool as comfortably better when the two sides meet. That's not been the case at Selhurst Park, with two complete capitulations in the past 10 months, and to see a match off in such style is very encouraging.

Now they'll need to continue their progress across two more competitions, and in fixtures with similar stakes against even better opposition. These are the types of performances that can and will see them make yet another charge across the final months of the season for the second year in a row.

In a match they largely dominated throughout, Liverpool got goals they needed in the second half from Daniel Sturridge and Adam Lallana to secure their progress to the quarterfinals of the FA Cup.

Crystal Palace 1: Campbell 15'
Liverpool 2: Sturridge 49', Lallana 58'

The first half had all the makings of a quintessential Liverpool performance--dominance in possession, threatening around the periphery in attack without a finishing touch, terrible refereeing decisions, and, of course, a sloppily conceded goal to give the opposition the lead. The visitors were solid if a little sloppy for the first 45 minutes, spurning a few chances and gifting Crystal Palace the lead in the 15th minute after Martin Skrtel's failed clearance led to a well-taken volley by Frasier Campbell.

Only this time there was a different feeling, one of inevitability that Liverpool would do what was required to break their hosts down and get the result they needed. And, aided by a smart change at the half and their ability to kill a match off, that feeling proved true as Rodgers' side saw out an excellent 2-1 victory to seal their progress to the quarterfinals of the FA Cup.

In a fixture that's proven to be more that Rodgers and company could handle in the last calendar year, it's a significant-seeming achievement, especially given that they went down early and didn't recover despite dominating most of the first half. They were denied a clear penalty when Papa Souare took down Daniel Sturridge in the area, and Adam Lallana's left-footed strike was well-saved by Julian Speroni from close range after a neat interplay from him, Jordan Henderson, and Joe Allen gifted him space in front of goal. Lazar Markovic wasted another opportunity with a surging run from right to left but failed to hit the target.

They weren't perfect, however, and Skrtel's error first forced Mignolet into a save before Campbell put the hosts 1-0 ahead. Palace nearly made it two when Dwight Gayle sliced through Skrtel and Can and, with the benefit of a lucky bounce, found himself one-on-one with Mignolet. The Belgian was again equal to the task, however, and Liverpool cleared from what would prove to be the last real threat of the match from Gayle and Crystal Palace.

Rodgers' decision to bring on Mario Balotelli in favor of Markovic, who's been good but not great in recent weeks, seemed to energize Liverpool, and they were in front before fifteen minutes had gone in the second half. They again controlled possession but this time found the finishing touch, first when Henderson's inch-perfect, curling cross found Sturridge, who hit a first-time volley through the legs of Speroni and then after Lallana punched home the rebound from Balotelli's excellent free-kick.

Both goals were astounding in their own right; Sturridge's was even more beautiful in slow-motion, underlining the quality of the cross and the volley, one that demanded technical quality that not many can provide, and topped off with the most little brother moment imaginable as Alberto Moreno joined Sturridge in celebration. Moreno nearly one-upped himself after the winner, which was a goal almost entirely produced by Balotelli, who won the foul and then curled a low, hard strike around the wall at Speroni, who could only parry into the path of a perfectly timed run by Lallana.

Even more impressive from there was that Liverpool did the exact opposite of what one might expect--they saw it out comfortably. Gayle did manage a snap shot from the edge of the area, again saved well by Mignolet, but otherwise it was an exercise in controlling a match over the closing stages, with Joe Allen proving vital in the effort. The Welshman has found himself the target of plenty of criticism of late, but this was the type of environment for which he was built. In a match and midfield needing control to secure the result, he provided it in spades, and the ease with which he and his teammates saw out the final twenty minutes was heartening.

Once again this side and its manager improved as a match wore on, led by the suddenly imperious Mignolet, and once again they're deserving of praise for doing what is necessary to earn the needed result. Crystal Palace had the momentum and the history, but Liverpool found a way through, and the result was no less than they deserved. That they'll advance to the quarterfinals is excellent, but the sentimental benefits--if one is inclined to believe those exist--are just as important.

Four full days now before Besiktas visit Anfield in the Europa League, and four full days to hope this side to continue their improvements in what has become a season-saving stretch. Considering what they've produced in recent weeks, there's no reason to believe those improvements won't continue. If they do, Liverpool can turn February and March from a rescue effort into a true challenge for silverware and a top four finish.

With win against Crystal Palace in the books, we want to know how you would rank Liverpool's performers and who your Man of the Match is.

Liverpool are through to the next round of the FA Cup thanks to a goal apiece from Daniel Sturridge and Adam Lallana against Crystal Palace. Liverpool dominated possession throughout the match, and despite some dodgy refereeing moments, emerged victorious in the second half to secure the win.

Now let us know how you saw things. Clicking the thumbs up button is a vote to move the player up the list-or to help keep them on top. Hitting thumbs down is a vote to push that player closer to the bottom. It's half Man of the Match poll and half player rankings, and we want to use it to find out who you think played well after each Liverpool match and, at the other end, who you'd maybe like to see given the next game off.

At the end of the month we'll go back through the results of that month's Ranker polls to hold a Player of the Month vote. Then, at the end of the season, the monthly results will help to determine The Liverpool Offside's Player of the Season and Young Player of the Season.

The foot injury that's lingered over the past week will keep Liverpool's 20-year-old forward out of another fixture, as he is reportedly set to miss out on today's fifth round FA Cup tie at Crystal Palace.

Raheem Sterling's absence on Tuesday night against Tottenham proved not to be decisive, as Brendan Rodgers' selections both from the outset and off the bench proved to be enough to edge past the visitors in an exciting 3-2 win. Going without arguably their best attacking player this season wasn't something many would hope to see replicated, however, and with the fixtures coming thick and fast for the rest of February, it was likely that supporters would get to see Sterling back in action soon rather than later.

According to the Liverpool Echo, however, it's going to be at least a little bit later, as the versatile forward will be left out of today's squad to face Crystal Palace in the fifth round of the FA Cup with a view to returning by Thursday evening, in time for the first leg of their Europa League tie with Besiktas. It will be the first time this season that Sterling will be out of two consecutive matches for fitness reasons, having previously missed out on two straight during his midseason break during the month of January.

With so many critical fixtures left--and without dismissing the importance of this one, obviously--caution appears to be the right call, and while Sterling joins a handful of others ruled out through injury, Rodgers should have more than enough options up front to compensate. Adam Lallana was likely set for a start anyway, and now he'll either go it alone behind two from Daniel Sturridge, Mario Balotelli, Fabio Borini, and Rickie Lambert, or be joined by either Lazar Markovic or Philippe Coutinho behind a lone striker.

No doubt that Liverpool are a far better side with Raheem Sterling available, and most would have surely preferred he be included in tonight's starting eleven in a fixture that's given Liverpool nightmares in the past year. But with a view toward the future, both short- and long-term, keeping the 20-year-old out until he's fully healed is the right call.

A chance at progress to the quarterfinals of the FA Cup awaits Liverpool at Selhurst Park, where they'll face a Crystal Palace side that's lost just once since the appointment of new manager Alan Pardew.

Liverpool's last chance at domestic silverware--at least the real kind, as they're still on the fringes of the hypothetical trophy for a top four finish--hinges on a result tonight at Crystal Palace in a fixture that's been plenty forgettable for Brendan Rodgers' squad. A draw that left their title hopes buried last season and 3-1 defeat in November of leave Liverpool hoping for a far better display tonight, and one that would see them edge closer a Wembley final.

Five questions to pass the time as we wait for kick off from Selhurst Park.

1) Does a cup tie call for Dejan Lovren to return to the starting line-up?

2) With Steven Gerrard and Lucas Leiva both injured, do you expect anyone other than Jordan Henderson & Joe Allen in central midfield?

3) Has Jordon Ibe solidifed his place in the starting line-up?

After needing a replay to get past Bolton in the fourth round, Liverpool now head to Selhurst Park to face Crystal Palace in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

No rest on the immediate horizon for Liverpool, who are set to play one crucial match after another for the rest of February and most of March. Last season saw Brendan Rodgers' side were out of every competition other than the Premier League by this point, and while their league standing added plenty of pressure, there wasn't nearly as much physical strain placed on what was, in hindsight, a very thin squad.

This is what they asked for, though, and while they're out of contention for the League Cup they're still alive in the FA Cup by virtue of their late win in the fourth round replay over Bolton. That earned them the right to face new manager Alan Pardew's Crystal Palace side at Selhurst Park, the site of two of Liverpool's more painful results in the last calendar year. Palace secured progress at the first time of asking in the last round with a 3-2 win at Southampton in a match that saw all five goals scored in the first half.

Pardew's lost just once in the seven matches he's overseen, a narrow 1-0 defeat to Everton on the final day of January. He should have a strong side available tomorrow despite the likely absences of Yaya Sanogo, Mile Jedinak, Scott Dann, Lee Chung-young, and Shola Ameobi. Frazier Campbell scored in the 1-1 draw against Newcastle last time out and should be in the mix in attack along with Marouane Chamakh and Dwight Gayle, who's scored in each of the three fixtures against Liverpool since Palace's promotion.

On Wednesday night, Julain Speroni started in goal with Joel Ward, Brede Hangeland, Damien Delaney, and former Liverpool defender Martin Kelly in defense, Joe Ledley and James McArthur in central midfield, with Jason Puncheon and Wilfried Zaha wide and Chamakh and Sanogo up top. Gayle and Campbell came off the bench along with Yannick Bolasie, who had only just returned from international duty at the African Cup of Nations.

For Liverpool:

Mignolet
Lovren Skrtel Sakho
Manquillo Can Henderson Enrique
Sterling Lallana
Balotelli

The injury to Steven Gerrard in the second half against Spurs means that he joins Lucas, Brad Jones, and Jon Flanagan on the injury list, and questions remain about whether or not Raheem Sterling will be available after missing out with a foot injury. No other problems were noted in the buildup, but as with the midweek match, one that could (and should) see a few regulars rested. Jordon Ibe is again ineligible after featuring previously in the competition while on loan at Derby County.

Brendan Rodgers is forced into a few changes here somewhere, and it's likely that he rings in a few through the defense and midfield. As much as he's talked about wanting to keep Emre Can in defense, now seems as good a time as any to give Dejan Lovren his first start in months, and that would either push Can into the midfield or the bench for a rest. If Lovren does come in he should be the only change across the three-man back line, with Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho retaining their places along with Simon Mignolet in goal.

Shifting Can to the midfield, which he's done to great effect late in matches the last few weeks, is intriguing enough to be hoped for, even if it does threaten the balance that's been found of late. He would join either Jordan Henderson or Joe Allen if he does move forward, and while Henderson has logged a significant number of minutes (along with most everyone else), he's clearly preferred to Allen and should get the start if it's between the two. Jose Enrique could be set for a return on the left opposite one of Javier Manquillo, Lazar Markovic, or, if he doesn't start in central defense, Glen Johnson.

After another 90 minutes on Tuesday, Philippe Coutinho will hopefully start on the bench tomorrow night, and if Sterling comes back into the squad, that leaves Rodgers with him, Markovic, and Adam Lallana to choose from in the slots behind the striker, and one of Daniel Sturridge or Mario Balotelli (or both, or neither, with Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini available as well) up top. Lallana should start after coming on late against Spurs, while Sterling will likely play if fit. Sturridge's minutes still need managing, and while he's certain to feature, it would be nice to see if Balotelli has any sort of momentum after getting his first Premier League goal earlier in the week.
