One of Liverpool's best on Saturday night at Goodison Park was Jordon Ibe, who made just his second Premier League start and his first since his January recall from Derby County.

Being the best of a bad lot--or at least a largely mediocre one--isn't always the most flattering of honors, but for Jordon Ibe, it was plenty impressive. The 19-year-old spent the first half of the season on loan at Championship promotion candidates Derby County, and on the back of his string of impressive performances throughout the fall and winter, Brendan Rodgers opted to bring him back into the senior squad.

With Lazar Markovic a doubt in the build-up due to a minor knock, Ibe was given just his second ever Premier League start at right wingback, and for 90 minutes on Saturday night, he was among Liverpool's stronger performances. He was involved in their best two chances of the night in front of goal, first pushing an effort from a deflected Raheem Sterling shot on goal that was saved point-blank by Joel Robles, and later when he shook two defenders to fire an arrowed, swerving strike past Robles and off the far post from 20-plus yards.

His influence faded slightly during a second half that saw Everton clamp down defensively, but he still managed to get involved with a few dangerous crosses, and he remained solid without the ball and tracking back. It was not a dominating, match-changing performance, but certainly one that did more than enough to showcase why Rodgers recalled him.

He and Markovic looked poised to battle it out for minutes the rest of the season and beyond, and for Liverpool supporters willing to be patient with a pair of promising wide players, that should be an exciting prospect.

Neither side emerge victorious in a match that, in the end, proved to be more about giving Liverpool's captain a warm sendoff than getting all three points.

Everton 0
Liverpool 0

What looked to be a standard derby fixture early settled into one of the more frustrating viewing experiences in recent memory, as neither side were able to establish control in Saturday evening's draw. Jordon Ibe's first-half bullet off the far post and Seamus Coleman's deflected shot save well by Simon Mignolet represented the best---and really only--chances for Liverpool and Everton respectively, and any sense of momentum the visitors had on the back of three straight league wins was surely halted.

Injuries and fatigue no doubt played a part, with Lucas limping off on 15 minutes and Philippe Coutinho taken off fairly early in the second half in favor of Daniel Sturridge. Steven Gerrard began to show signs of tiring in the first half and failed to click in a more advanced position, while Raheem Sterling didn't have much of an influence centrally or when pushed wide after Sturridge's introduction.

Liverpool defended well for most of the match until Coleman's late chance, with Martin Skrtel and Mignolet the standouts. It was an uncharacteristically nervy day from Mamadou Sakho, however, who struggled to find an outlet at times and was caught in possession on a handful of occasions. His devotion to keeping the ball on the deck is generally a positive, but some smart pressing in numbers by the hosts overran him at times. Emre Can was better than Sakho but also susceptible to a few lapses, and at times he created danger for himself or others in defense to clear.

For what's typically a fiery derby it was relatively tame for long stretches, with the only real surge of energy coming partway through the second half after Jordan Henderson and Steven Naismith were involved in a brief spat. Things threatened to become watchable from there, but neither side had enough quality in the buildup, and for Liverpool, the introduction of Rickie Lambert for Sterling brought their play to a standstill going forward.

Ibe was mostly encouraging to go along with the solid play of Skrtel, Can, and Mignolet, and Alberto Moreno had his moments but was mostly quiet as well. Daniel Sturridge, whose exit from pre-match warmups led to speculation that he was injured again, could get anything going in place of Coutinho, and once again showed signs of rust while trying to work his way into the match. Joe Allen also struggled at times after coming on for Lucas, and Liverpool will need him to be much better if Lucas' injury rules him out beyond the weekend.

Any actual match-related narrative was overshadowed by the efforts to give Gerrard a warm sendoff, as it was clear early that sentiment dictated his selection and that he remained on the pitch, and other than a well-struck bicycle kick and curling left-footed effort he sent wide, he had no discernible positive influence on the match. It would have been lovely to see him get a goal in his final Merseyside derby, a fixture that's so often seen him elevate his individual game, but Brendan Rodgers' failure to take him off only hurt Liverpool.

Bringing on Lambert rather than Markovic was more of the same, both in terms of sentiment and the impact it had on the squad more generally. He managed a volley that was blocked and a tame shot rolled at Joel Robles, but otherwise there was no urgency in a match that was begging for it. Everton were largely content with a scoreless draw, and the continued presence of Gerrard along with the addition of Lambert sapped any energy Liverpool had left.

It's not surprising that Liverpool are worse without Sterling, Coutinho, and Lucas involved, but they need others to step up or be given the chance to do so. Recovery will have to occur quickly, as they'll face a Spurs side on Tuesday at Anfield that's in far better shape than they were when Liverpool eased to a 3-0 win in August. Defensively progress must continue, but through the midfield and forward areas Liverpool need far more than they produced today.

With a draw against Everton in the books, we want to know how you would rank Liverpool's performers and who your Man of the Match is.

Liverpool and Everton played to a disappointing nil-nil draw in a match that on paper should have included some manner of thrills but in reality was something much less exciting. Though Simon Mignolet managed to keep yet another clean sheet, Steven Gerrard's final Merseyside derby will not go down in the history books as the stuff of legend, and the a draw seems a fair result for two sides that never seemed like either was going to end up winning.

Now let us know how you saw things. Clicking the thumbs up button is a vote to move the player up the list-or to help keep them on top. Hitting thumbs down is a vote to push that player closer to the bottom. It's half Man of the Match poll and half player rankings, and we want to use it to find out who you think played well after each Liverpool match and, at the other end, who you'd maybe like to see given the next game off.

At the end of the month we'll go back through the results of that month's Ranker polls to hold a Player of the Month vote. Then, at the end of the season, the monthly results will help to determine The Liverpool Offside's Player of the Season and Young Player of the Season.

In Brendan Rodgers' 100th league game and Steven Gerrard's final Merseyside derby in the league, both sides shared a point in a goalless draw.

Everton 0
Liverpool 0

Pre-match thoughts: Derby day in the Premier League. After a hurricane-like performance from Harry Kane in the North London derby and Southampton's late winner against Queens Park Rangers, a Liverpool win in the Merseyside derby would make the race for fourth retain a somewhat congested look. Jordon Ibe was the big surprise as he started in place of Lazar Marković on the right, Adam Lallana's injury meant he was out, and Steven Gerrard joined Philippe Coutinho behind Raheem Sterling as Daniel Sturridge continued on the bench. There was no place for Mario Balotelli.

The game started at a fast pace, and opening ten minutes was not entirely comfortable for Liverpool as Everton squeezed up when the away side were in possession in deep areas. Steven Gerrard's free-kick was headed for the top right hand corner of Joel's goal, but the Everton keeper was equal to it. Everton showed zeal in the tackle early on with Kevin Mirallas, Steven Naismith, and Gareth Barry making strong challenges and pestering for the ball.

Lucas came off for Joe Allen after 16 minutes as he probably aggravated the thigh injury that kept him out of the replay against Bolton. Ibe nearly scored a minute later after the ball rolled out to him in the Everton area from Sterling's deflected shot.

Jordan Ibe's run from the right and powerful shot had Joel beaten on the 27 minute mark, not the post. It would have been a wonderful first derby goal from the youngster. That was the most notable effort of the half as Liverpool took more control of the game against a side that increasingly played on the counter.

Half-time thoughts: Mamadou Sakho was put under pressure by Everton attackers and struggled with no outlet as Roberto Martínez targeted the French international. There were also a couple of questionable headers that lacked conviction and accuracy. Martin Skrtel battled with distinction, Emre Can stood up to Romelu Lukaku, and Jordon Ibe offered same ball carrying ability as Lazar Marković. Philippe Coutinho was Liverpool's best player in the half, while Steven Gerrard was the worst. The captain lacked movement and meaningful involvement except for his free-kick, and the midfield wasn't faring too well with Henderson and Allen both providing middling contributions in the absence of Lucas Leiva.

A powerfully struck free-kick early by Mirallas in the second half flashed wide but warned Liverpool of danger. Liverpool pressed in Everton's half to create a good opportunity for a pass and goal on the counter. Sterling was put through by Coutinho, and Gerrard acrobatically sent an effort goalwards from a corner that hit the head of Naismith. Liverpool started the second half well and in control.

Aaron Lennon was introduced on the hour for Mirallas to provide fresh legs out wide. Daniel Sturridge was introduced for Philippe Coutinho, which was a puzzling decision by Brendan Rodgers when Coutinho had been Liverpool's best player. For 15 minutes or so, the game was scrappy with much of Liverpool's attacks coming down the left. However, a first meaningful attack on the right from Jordon Ibe brought an excellent chance for Alberto Moreno who couldn't sort his feet out to put his side ahead.

Rickie Lambert came on for Raheem Sterling on 82 minutes as Rodgers looked for a late winner, and his opposite number brought on Ross Barkley for the troublesome Muhamed Bešić a few minutes later. Barkley made an impact with a lovely pass for the marauding Seamus Coleman who forced a good save from the commanding Simon Mignolet. Gerrard curled wide from a Sturridge pass immediately after.

Full-time thoughts: Another clean sheet and another derby draw in the Premier League under Brendan Rodgers. Mamadou Sakho was strangely shaky in possession, but Simon Mignolet was generally more aggressive even though he was hardly tested. A win at home to Tottenham would make this result look a lot better. Jordon Ibe and Steven Gerrard illustrated the future and the past respectively, and Brendan Rodgers would do well to be mindful of that in pursuit of qualification for the Champions League.

The 224th Merseyside derby sees a surging Liverpool travel across Stanley Park to meet an Everton side looking to get their season back on track.

February is an unrelenting month for Brendan Rodgers' Liverpool squad, and while they're on the back of two straight wins and three consecutive in the Premier League, they'll need to replicate their form from last spring if they're going to get themselves back in the conversation for a top four finish. Everton are struggling but pose a significant challenge in a month full of them, and a win here for Rodgers and company would be a crucial step forward as they get the month in full swing.

The reverse fixture led most to fear the worst when it came to Mamadou Sakho's Liverpool future, but five months later he's managed to assert himself as the defender of the present and future at Anfield.

For as good a player as he is, Mamadou Sakho's Liverpool career has not been particularly easy. His signing in August of 2013 was mostly met with praise, but what's unfolded over the course of the last year and a half has been anything but straightforward, with injuries and manager's preference conspiring to leave his standing at the club in question throughout.

That's an absurd reality for a player of his quality, and that it's taken so long for him to be part of the preferred defensive setup has been difficult for those not stuck on aesthetics to understand. He certainly didn't help his own cause back in late September, of course, as he left Anfield ahead of kickoff against Everton after being left out of the matchday squad. The decision to leave him out, particularly with Dejan Lovren struggling so badly, is certainly subject to criticism, but Sakho's departure left him open to judgment as well.

Injury compounded the road back, but he's now one of the first names on the team sheet, and today's start against Everton will be a symbolic appearance for a player who was so far away from first-choice in the reverse fixture:

"The last derby was a bad moment for me. It was a difficult time. I felt bad. I was disappointed because I wanted to play. It is the same with all the players - we all want to play for the red shirt in big games. To be disappointed was natural. Thankfully, things have changed for me. I am always ready to fight for the club and for the team. I don't know if I have proved I belong here as that's for others to decide. But I am very happy at Liverpool and very happy with the team. I have two and a half years left on my contract and I've never said I wanted to go. My family is happy here and everything is settled for me, and I like being at Liverpool.

"The Everton game is special. It's one where we always have to be at our strongest. We have to be ready. We're in good form and it's a big game for us. I want to be an important player for Liverpool. I hope I am playing this time, but I am not the coach. I'll continue to work hard and make sure I am ready but the coach has to do his job, and he will decide if I play or not."

There is a less than zero chance that Brendan Rodgers doesn't select the French center-half today unless there's a major fitness problem, and the same can be said for the remainder of the season. He has become Liverpool's most commanding defender in the present setup, and he should be the man around whom Rodgers builds his defense in the coming years. Today will be special and symbolic, no doubt, but most encouraging is that there's plenty more to come from Mamadou Sakho in a Liverpool shirt.

The Merseyside Derby is almost here, so we sat down with fellow SB Nation blog Royal Blue Mersey to get some questions answered.

Knowledge is power. As Everton and Liverpool prepare to square off in the latest edition of the Merseyside Derby, the last Merseyside Derby of Steven Gerrard's career, knowledge of the matchup is something to be craved and sought, cherished and treasured. In our efforts to reap such knowledge, we struck up a conversation with Ryan Blank of SB Nation's Everton blog, Royal Blue Mersey, and he was kind enough to answer our questions. The result of that conversation follows, hopefully for you to enjoy.

The Liverpool Offside: There seems to be a growing sense of frustration around the Everton fanbase as this season continues to unravel. Suffice it to say that sitting in 12th place in the Premier League is not exactly where Everton wanted to be at this point in the season, but it's tough to put one's finger on what exactly has gone wrong. Do you think Roberto Martinez' tactics just aren't doing the job this season, or has something else gone wrong?

Royal Blue Mersey: This season has definitely not been up to the fan’s expectations; especially after the club shelled out a record amount over the summer to bring Romelu Lukaku to Merseyside on a permanent basis. Probably one of the most clichéd excuses in sports is to blame injuries but the Blues were really hampered by them at the beginning of the season and things have not gotten much better. Key players such as Kevin Mirallas, Tim Howard and James McCarthy have hurt Everton’s ability to score and protect thin leads. With it only being Martinez’ second season at the helm, it’s difficult to determine if his tactics are part of the main problem. Regardless of the sport, we always question coaching decisions when things go wrong and often don’t praise them enough when things go well – for those of us who follow American football, recall the pivotal goal-line play of last Sunday’s Super Bowl.

TLO: This Seahawks fan is going to generously ignore that last remark. Back to the match at hand, Liverpool and Everton both have high-end young English talents in Raheem Sterling and Ross Barkley. Unlike Sterling, though, Barkley seems to have taken a bit of a step back this season in terms of his performance level. Is that just a result of Everton's struggles, or has his development stalled a bit?

TSS: Ross Barkley definitely has not lived up to his hype going into this season. I won’t say that he has regressed but he has not progressed if you will. The whole team has struggled to find a groove and get some momentum going. He is also on everyone’s radar this season; meaning that he’s going to be watched and marked more so than in the past. That coupled with the injuries in the midfield have sort of left the youngster on an island. It will be interesting to see if he can step up and take control during the rest of the campaign.

TLO: With Luis Robles playing poorly and Tim Howard hurt - and not really impressing even before going down - is there any solution in goal for Everton on the horizon?

TSS: That’s the million dollar (pound) question. Robles is a clear number two while Howard has an established track record of rarely missing matches. Unfortunately the injury he sustained in December was bad enough to keep him out to this point. The most recent reports are that Howard is progressing faster than expected but he will not be ready for the derby. Robles has given his best effort and he seems more confident with every match played – the Crystal Palace clean sheet really stands out. Going forward, the rumors are that Tim Howard may be looking for a summer move to the MLS. Although he’s under contract with Everton until 2018, moving home may mean that he can extend his career. Many fans were expecting the club to bring in a new keeper in the January transfer window but nothing materialized but the future netminder will likely be addressed at the end of the season.

TLO: Every cloud is supposed to have a silver lining. What's been that flash of light or beacon of hope for Everton this season?

TSS: Muhamed Besic. He was a great get for the club after a stand out performance in this past summer’s World Cup where he represented Bosnia. He’s relentless and is the sport’s equivalent of a fighter. Everton were able to get him on the cheap from his former Hunarian club and this investment has definitely paid itself off.

TLO: What's your prediction for this edition of the Merseyside Derby?

TSS: I like how Everton has started to click over the past couple of matches. They have been more in control of the game and directing the pace of play. The key offensive personnel will be ready for the derby and I expect a goal from Lukaku as hopefully he’s ended his dry spell. It’s the defense that concerns me though – they simply have been too inconsistent throughout the season. I’m predicting a spirited fight but I think Liverpool edges the Toffees 3-2.

Five questions to pass the time as we wait for kick-off from Goodison Park.

1) At what point will we begin to see Dejan Lovren's face on milk cartons across Merseyside?

2) Steven Gerrard is a given, but do we see him paired with either Lucas or Hendo, or do we see him in a more advanced role?

3) Will Daniel Sturridge convince Brendan Rodgers to write his name into the starting line up?

4) This derby is known for the vast number of red cards that have been issued in past encounters. Who is the most likely candidate to receive one tomorrow and for what infraction?

5) Final score?

Bonus: If you were making a particularly cliched biopic about Steven Gerrard's life, how would you script his final Merseyside derby?
