Rodgers understands that the fans are frustrated with Liverpool right now, but also says that he wouldn't have done anything differently than he has.

Liverpool fans were left frustrated once again as their team fell 2-1 to Chelsea at Anfield. Brendan Rodgers, ever the eloquent speaker, definitely commiserated with their frustrations, but also held firm in his conviction that he has Liverpool on the right path.

"It is a difficult moment for us," Rodgers told the media after the match. "The changes raised a lot of criticism in the week. I can take that. I made the call.

"The players have been brilliant in their approach to the games but we the pressure is now on because we didn't get the results. I wouldn't have done anything different at all, we just didn't get the results. This week will be an experience for us and we can use that and go forward."

No matter his confidence, though, Rodgers is once more starting to come under fire for his decision making. After a heavily-rotated lineup played well against Real Madrid, most of the players who lead that performance went back to the bench. What followed was a largely uninspiring performance in the same, repetitive vein that we've seen far too many times this season.

Emre Can's early opener looked at first like Liverpool would be off to a bright start, but after the bizarre and frustrating equalizer minutes later, the side settled in to the same old drek. Rodgers looked visibly annoyed by the fans' frustrated reaction when he took off Philippe Coutinho, who had mostly been a bright performer on the day, to get another striker on in Fabio Borini.

"I didn't feel we were creating enough," he said of the decision. "I wanted to get an extra striker on to change the momentum. The fans were frustrated. We've lost three games on the spin now, they aren't used to that. I understand that there is that wee bit of frustration."

There's only one solution to that frustration, though: start playing better, and start winning matches. Lots of them. After expectations ran so high over the summer, Liverpool have fallen painfully flat during the season. Something, anything, needs to give before "a wee bit of frustration" turns in to something much more toxic in the fanbase's emotions.

A bright start from the hosts gives way to another dull display, leaving Chelsea to run out comfortable winners at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

Liverpool 1: Can 9'
Chelsea 2: Cahill 14', Costa 67'

We're running out of ways to talk about the disappointment in a week that's seen Liverpool lose three straight matches. Today was probably better overall than last weekend but not quite as resolute as the loss midweek, with Chelsea showing why they're very much the frontrunners in the Premier League and Liverpool once again leaving us contemplative of what exactly we're supposed to expect. Whatever it is, it's left them well off the pace of the top four heading into the international break and desperately in need of improvement.

The positives seemed clear enough, with Emre Can and Philippe Coutinho leading the way going forward in the first half. Can's goal came via deflection but was the result of a positive run forward from the midfield--and Liverpool playing it out from the back successfully, which would prove rare on the day--while Coutinho looked at his best darting through the spaces afforded by the Chelsea midfield. Raheem Sterling had a few moments early as well, finding more joy operating from a starting spot on the left.

Outside of those three, it's hard to know if there's anything we can really take away from this Liverpool performance that we don't already know. And while Liverpool should have had a penalty in the 88th minute after Gary Cahill's clear handball, the match was effectively shut down after Diego Costa got his winner in the 67th. Brendan Rodgers tried a change by bringing Coutinho and Can off for Allen and Borini, but two strikers were just as ineffective as one, with the lack of influence coming through the air rather than along the deck (or, in the case of Mario Balotelli, offside).

Reverting to the personnel from last weekend brought mixed results; using Jordan Henderson to nullify Cesc Fabregas proved useful, but it was also a very inconsistent display from Henderson, especially in the final third, to go with Steven Gerrard's poor performance. Dejan Lovren had another shocker in central defense and looks clearly third-choice at this point, and possibly fourth if Mamadou Sakho is healthy after the international break. Glen Johnson had a few key blocks during a rampant Chelsea spell late in the first half but left Coutinho on an island for what proved to be the winner, providing another piece of evidence for the growing sentiment that his time at Liverpool will soon be at an end.

Maybe the biggest revelation--and it's not really that revelatory, just disappointing--is that Rodgers' talk of meritocracy is a myth. We lived with it last year because it worked while Liverpool were setting the world alight, but after the events of the week, there were at least two or three personnel selections that made it clear the manager is only paying lip service to the idea of picking players on merit. Those culpable for many of Liverpool's problems this season were absent Tuesday but present today (and last weekend against Newcastle), and it seems clear that this trend continues unless circumstances dictate otherwise.

Hopefully this break and the fixtures to follow serve as an opportunity for things to change, because it's clear that from top to bottom, front to back, Liverpool need fixing.

With a tough loss to Chelsea in the books, we want to know how you would rank Liverpool's performers and who your Man of the Match is.

Despite Brendan Rodgers loudly insisting the side he picked to face Real Madrid weren't reserves and that playing time was earned on merit, bar Emre Can, all of Tuesday's irregulars were back on the bench as he returned to the group that failed so miserably against Newcastle. The performance at least was improved over last weekend, but it still wasn't enough for Liverpool to get a result.

Let us know how you saw it. Clicking the thumbs up button is a vote to move the player up the list—or to help keep them on top. Hitting thumbs down is a vote to push that player closer to the bottom. It's half Man of the Match poll and half player rankings, and we want to use it to find out who you think played well after each Liverpool match and, at the other end, who you'd maybe like to see given the next game off.

At the end of the month we'll go back through the results of that month's Ranker polls to hold a Player of the Month vote. Then, at the end of the season, the monthly results will help to determine The Liverpool Offside's Player of the Season and Young Player of the Season.

Liverpool succumbed to a superior Chelsea side to lose three games in the space of a week.

Emre Can was the only player of the surprise starters in the away tie against Real Madrid who kept his place as Dejan Lovren, Glen Johnson, Steven Gerrard, Jordan Henderson, Philippe Coutinho, Raheem Sterling, and Mario Balotelli returned to the line-up in Saturday's early kick-off against Chelsea. A win for Liverpool would banish criticism from the media and keep Brendan Rodgers' side in touch with the top four until the late November tie against Crystal Palace after the international break. Ramires was the interesting selection for Chelsea on the right to probably counter the raids on Alberto Moreno.

Can and Balotelli started brightly, and it was the German youngster who scored the game's first goal outside the area with the help of a deflection from Gary Cahill. Chelsea reacted strongly and immediately put pressure on the home side. Within 5 minutes Chelsea were level with Cahill from a set-piece. Simon Mignolet produced a good save from John Terry's header, but the reaction from Cahill was too quick. Goal-line technology confirmed that the ball had crossed the line. Just.

Chelsea' press seemed to overwhelm Liverpool for a spell that was enough to get an equaliser. It was disappointing that Liverpool are incapable of preventing an opposition side from creating chances. Interestingly, Chelsea' press intensified and reduced at various points in the first half. Liverpool had no answer to Chelsea's pressing and at one point, it even confused Gerrard and Henderson into trying to receive the same pass.

The first half was entertaining for neutrals, and Liverpool reacted well to Chelsea's equaliser. Henderson was surprised at a shooting opportunity in the Chelsea's box, and Liverpool's left and central areas produced some promising play. Eden Hazard and Nemanja Matić posed different questions that Liverpool struggled to answer as the first half wore on. Chelsea pinned Liverpool deep within the home side's half in the final ten minutes, and Hazard had some fine opportunities that were blocked by Glen Johnson as his trickery on the left became nearly unstoppable. Liverpool looked relieved to go in level at the end of a competitive first half.

Liverpool's task was complicated for the second half: score, get around a troublesome press, get more players in the box when the balls are put in, watch Hazard closely, and hopefully do not concede a goal as Chelsea were probably going to score at some stage.

Chelsea looked like they were going to score with Liverpool's right side under repeated pressure throughout the second half. Liverpool's midfield wasn't coping very well with Gerrard and Henderson playing poorly. Henderson has to mind Gerrard a lot, but that shouldn't excuse him from a lack of ideas in the final third along with general sloppiness in possession. Glen Johnson, one of the first half's best players defensively, struggled in the second half with a combination of Hazard and Johnson's predilection for playing at a pace from a bygone era.

Diego Costa scored with just over twenty minutes to go. Liverpool's two best players were substituted. There could be an argument for Coutinho coming for something different in Lallana or Borini, but maybe Sterling would have been a more likely candidate. Emre Can going off was unbelievable. Rodgers reacting after Chelsea scored is something a lot of managers do when their team suffers from a goal or a sending off. Liverpool woke up after the going behind and toiled in vain without creating much.

Borini was somewhat lively, Joe Allen and Rickie Lambert didn't do much so the substitutions weren't great. Adam Lallana was required in those spaces in the final third, but Liverpool didn't deserve anything from the game. The late call for a penalty was justified, and Liverpool should have been given an opportunity to equalise. However, it is telling that Liverpool probably wouldn't have found any other way to equaliser. That's three losses on the spin. Newcastle away, Real Madrid away, and Chelsea at home. The international break is much needed for Liverpool and Rodgers to make some serious changes, because there are players who can make a balanced, effective team.

Five questions to pass the time as we wait for kickoff from Anfield.

1) Dejan Lovren or Kolo Toure?

2) Since there are (allegedly) no guaranteed starters, does Steven Gerrard walk back into the starting line up?

3) Will Brendan Rodgers persist with a single striker, and if so will it be Fabio Borini or Mario Balotelli?

4) Most likely candidate to earn a straight red?

5) How many substitutions will Brendan Rodgers use?

Team news, viewing options, and a full preview as Liverpool host league leaders Chelsea at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

What to make of Liverpool's performance against Real Madrid is still unclear, though we can at least say with some degree of certainty that they lost 1-0. Could have been worse, could have been better (but also probably not that), could have been the exact same. Liverpool lost, which everyone expected, but the manner in which they lost--or at least who was included as they went about the losing--has proved a larger talking point than the other English embarrassments in the Champions League this week.

We do know that Liverpool will need to be better tomorrow if they're going to get a result, at least in the goalscoring department. In their last two Premier League matches Liverpool have been blanked, and across all competitions they've only scored twice in five matches. It would be great if that changed for the better sometime soon.

So it's not necessarily a good time to be playing the unbeaten league leaders, but after an underwhelming draw in the Champions League at Maribor and an escape against QPR--seriously, nobody leaves it late against them--last weekend at Stamford Bridge, Liverpool will face a Chelsea side that's not quite as high on confidence as they were in the opening weeks of the season. Of course, their form in the season's first month and a half was absurd, so their confidence taking a knock means it's probably still higher than most ahead of tomorrow.

Who Jose Mourinho goes with is still up in the air; Jon Obi Mikel is questionable and Loic Remy is back in training after initially being ruled out for a few more weeks, while Diego Costa should make his full return after coming on as a substitute against Maribor. Each of Cesc Fabregas, Eden Hazard, and Nemanja Matic should be included despite starting midweek. Willian played only a half before being replaced by Oscar, and Ramires could make his way back into the side as well. Defensively we can expect Thibaut Courtois in goal, with John Terry, Gary Cahill, Branislav Ivanovic, and Cesar Azpilicueta likely across the back four.

For Liverpool:

Mignolet
Manquillo Skrtel Toure Moreno
Gerrard
Henderson Can
Sterling Balotelli Coutinho

Hopes of a return for Daniel Sturridge were dashed by Brendan Rodgers in his pre-match presser yesterday, meaning that we'll have to wait another few weeks until the striker is in contention. He remains ruled out with Mamadou Sakho, Jon Flanagan, Jose Enrique, and Suso, while news of a Steven Gerrard hamstring scan earlier in the week don't appear to have any bearing on his availability.

So the big question, then--does Rodgers make any changes based on the performance of The White Towel Brigade at the Bernabeu? After trumpeting the respective qualities of those involved one would think so, but there's easy money on him mostly reverting to type, with a number of regulars likely to come back into the fold after they were rested. Or dropped. Or in the reserves.

Steven Gerrard, Jordan Henderson, and Raheem Sterling are locks to return, and it's more likely that not that Philippe Coutinho and Mario Balotelli are in the eleven as well. There should be a handful that retain their spots despite the quick turnaround; Simon Mignolet will obviously start in goal after his best performance of the season, Javier Manquillo and Alberto Moreno should continue at right- and left-back, and the Martin Skrtel-Kolo Toure partnership could (and most likely should) be given another chance in central defense. That would again leave Dejan Lovren on the outside looking in, which Rodgers has been hesitant to do.

Gerrard's return surely means that Lucas drops to the bench after a very solid display against Real Madrid, while Lazar Markovic, Fabio Borini, and Adam Lallana would likely have to make way for Sterling, Henderson, and Coutinho. This is probably not the match that Rodgers opts to go with Borini and Balotelli in a partnership, which could force Sterling wide right yet again with Balotelli isolated as the lone striker. That it's expected does not mean it's desired.

Kickoff is set for 12:45PM GMT/7:45AM EST on Saturday, with BT Sport providing coverage in the UK and NBCSN/NBC Sports Live Extra carrying the match in the US. Our coverage will start with the overnight open thread tonight and carry into the matchday post early tomorrow, which will have team sheets an hour before kickoff.
