Speaking to the Spanish press following last night's UEFA Super Cup, Alberto Moreno expressed his sadness at leaving Sevilla but says he's looking forward to continuing his growth at Liverpool.

Yesterday morning, Alberto Moreno was getting ready to play against Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup. By the evening, he had been withdrawn from Sevilla's lineup after Liverpool reached an agreement for his transfer from the Spanish club.

It had been a move long in coming, but that didn't make its sudden completion any less so, particularly for a player who had spent his entire life at the same club. After the match, Moreno joined his by then former teammates on the pitch in Cardiff and said a tearful goodbye.

"I'm living in a strange situation because I'm leaving the club I've spent my entire life at," he then told ABC de Sevilla. "Sevilla understood that Liverpool's offer was good and so I am going. I have all kinds of conflicting emotions but wish nothing but the best for Sevilla.

"I'm a Sevilliano but I want to continue to grow. What happened on the pitch, with the fans, will be something I will always remember and I could not help but be sad because I did not expect it. First came saying goodbye to my teammates, then the fans. It was a lot to deal with."

After the Sevilla fans applauded their departing youth academy product, the 22-year-old left back was on his way to Liverpool, where today he has undergone a medical. He is expected to sign a contract shortly and to be officially unveiled as the club's eighth signing tomorrow.

"I was always aware the two teams were negotiating," he added, "but I never got into that. Liverpool are a great club so of course I'm super-motivated and I hope things go well."

His medical and contract signing are still to come, but after dragging on since May, Liverpool today officially announced they have reached a deal in principle to sign Alberto Moreno from Sevilla.

Following news earlier today that Liverpool had finally agreed a fee with Sevilla for Alberto Moreno, the club have taken the unusual step this evening of officially confirming the completion of the deal in principle.
Whatever the reason, Liverpool have tonight officially announced that they have reached an agreement in principle to bring Moreno to Anfield. The 22-year-old Spanish fullback will now travel to Liverpool where he will undergo a medical and sign a contract. It is widely believed that the club have also agreed in principle to personal terms for the player.

After news of Moreno's fee broke today, the player was held out of the UEFA Super Cup, this despite rumours that part of the hold-up in completing a deal was that Sevilla—and the player—wanted the academy product to participate in one last match for the club before leaving. There were tearful scenes on the pitch following the match, further serving to confirm his imminent departure.

Moreno is expected to officially become the club's eighth signing of the summer on Wednesday or Thursday. The transfer fee Liverpool will pay Sevilla for him is believed to be £12M guaranteed, rising to £15M with all add-ons.

After spending most of the summer in negotiations with Sevilla, Liverpool have finally agreed a fee for the transfer of left-back Alberto Moreno.

The arrival of Javier Manquillo at the start of last week was expected to be followed closely by another young Spanish fullback, and while it didn't happen as quickly as most would have liked, it looks as though Liverpool are going to deliver. Months of interest and negotiations have paid off, with Liverpool reportedly--and finally--agreeing a fee for the transfer of Alberto Moreno from Sevilla. He's long been one of the club's top defensive targets this summer, with interest reported as early as May, and now there's a deal in place that will see him move to Merseyside.

It surely comes too late to see him involved against Southampton at the weekend, but if everything is tidied up and completed in the coming days, he should be in the running for the trip to Manchester City in just under two weeks' time. His signature is likely to be Liverpool's last before they spend the final weeks of the window searching for another striker, but it's a significant one given the amount of work they've had to do to make a deal work for Sevilla, who were exceptionally stubborn throughout the process.

It'll be interesting to see where Moreno fits if and when he does arrive given the fullback shuffle that's in motion; Manquillo impressed in his debut with Glen Johnson on the left and Jose Enrique a late substitute, and with Jon Flangan injured, Martin Kelly off to Crystal Palace, and Jack Robinson rumored for a loan, Moreno should find himself with a chance to earn minutes almost immediately.

As Tony Barrett noted above, Moreno's participation in tonight's Super Cup has been ruled out, with either Fernando Navarro or Nicolas Pareja featuring at left-back to face Real Madrid.

**Addendum: Reports have the fee at €18m, which is around £14m, though other reports now have it as low as £12m.
Following reports a deal would be done following the Super Cup, it seems almost inevitable that Sevilla's president has insisted there is no deal to send Alberto Moreno to Liverpool.

Despite widespread reports in England and Spain that a deal had been agreed in principle to send Sevilla left back Alberto Moreno to Anfield following Tuesday's Super Cup against Real Madrid, the Spanish club's president has today come out to rubbish the talk. Given the way this soap opera of a transfer saga has gone, this probably shouldn't be surprising to anybody.

"There were negotiations ten days ago but there is no agreement today," insisted Sevilla president Jose Castro when he spoke to the press before flying off for Cardiff ahead of the glorified friendly that is tomorrow's UEFA Super Cup. "It depends on them. I have said the price is set by us. If they pay the amount in a timely manner a deal will go through, and if not he will remain."

Last week, a deal was all but done. Then, when it didn't actually get done the story became that it would get done following Tuesday's Super Cup, and sources in Spain with contacts within Sevilla continued to push this line right up until this morning. Now, any deal is once again on hold. Or perhaps it's not even anywhere close to happening after all.

Which probably means that in an hour or a day there will be new information suggesting Alberto Moreno to Liverpool is imminent. So it goes.

The neverending transfer story that is Alberto Moreno to Liverpool keeps rumbling along, with the Spanish press reporting it is the player who has sought to delay the move until after the Super Cup.

The Alberto Moreno transfer saga kicked off in May and at times it's felt as though at least once a week since then, some paper or other has insisted that a deal has been agreed or is about to be agreed or that Moreno is on his way to England. And usually it's been Estadio Deportivo, a Sevilla-based newspaper with ties to the club, driving the narrative.

Last week they again stepped up to say that really for real guys a deal has been done and Moreno will become a Liverpool player within a matter of days. Now that days have turned into another week and with rumours claiming the deal was being held up by the UEFA Super Cup, Estadio Deportivo have again updated the story.

The Andalusian paper claims that Moreno himself is the driving force behind the delay, as when the deal dragged out to a point where the Super Cup was mere weeks away, playing in a final game for his boyhood club became a priority. And glorified friendly or not, it's a chance for silverware in a match against Spanish rivals Real Madrid.

As far as games to bow out in, it's not difficult to see the appeal to the 22-year-old fullback who rose through the ranks at Sevilla, though the odds will be heavily against them. It will at the very least mean that Moreno will be flying to the United Kingdom this week—the Super Cup takes place tomorrow in Cardiff at 7:45PM BST/2:45PM EST.

With a handful of English sources reporting the deal as done barring Tuesday's cup match and Sevilla's local paper agreeing, hopefully the Alberto Moreno saga will finally—finally—be over by this time on Wednesday.

The on again, off again, on again, off again,on again transfer of Alberto Moreno from Sevilla to Liverpool is absolutely totally on for real this time, but only after he makes one final appearance for the Spanish club.

As far as matches held between Winners vs Other Winners go, the UEFA Super Cup might be a rung or two higher than the Community Shield since it is contested by the winner of UEFA's two continental club tournaments. This year's instalment sees ten time Champions League winners Real Madrid take on Europa League winners Sevilla in sunny Cardiff next Tuesday.

Liverpool fans are more focused on future European matches than ones held to celebrate those from the past season, but the Super Cup has emerged as the alleged final stumbling block in the incredibly drawn out transfer of defender Alberto Moreno from Sevilla to Liverpool. The Spaniard's club are hoping to get one final performance out of the player before he runs off to the Premier League, and after Tuesday's match he'll be free to enjoy the warm embrace of Dr Zaf Iqbal.

Liverpool and Sevilla had long been rumoured to have disagreed over the player's valuation by a mere £2m, suggesting that the delays in signing the final paperwork were more likely related to something other than money given Liverpool's propensity for paying top dollar for other transfers this summer.

That the hold up should be something as simple as playing in a final high profile match for his old club should not warrant all the added drama surrounding the transfer, but delays have happened for far sillier reasons in the past. In the grand scheme of reasons for a delay — and presuming Moreno is pictured leaning on things at Melwood on Wednesday — playing a goodbye match for your boyhood club is probably something to be lauded.

Gonzalo Arroyo Moreno

After a month where it seemed a deal was agreed for Alberto Moreno every few days, Spanish sources say his Liverpool move is back on and that a deal is in place. For real this time.

There was a time when Alberto Moreno to Liverpool was a done deal. When he was flying in tomorrow to complete his medical. And then, when it turned out the deal wasn't actually done and Alberto Moreno wasn't in fact in Liverpool tomorrow or today or yesterday undergoing a medical, the whole song and dance would be repeated the following week.

Mostly it was Sevilla's Estadio Deportivo fuelling the lather, rinse, repeat narrative when it came to Moreno's supposedly certain Liverpool move earlier this summer. Now, with the two clubs reportedly nearing a deal after Liverpool spent a spell exploring other options and Sevilla went looking for other potential buyers and found none, it's time to check in with them again.

Sevilla return to training on Tuesday morning, but the paper believes Moreno won't be involved—that he could have mere hours remaining as a Sevilla player. They further claim the problem previously was that Liverpool backed out of a deal rather than that Sevilla kept raising the bar, but that now that the two sides have gotten to talking again there is at the least an agreement in principle.

Along with confirming Iago Aspas' loan deal includes a compulsory €6M purchase option, Estadio Deportivo claim it will be a similar deal to the €20—or £16M—that Liverpool were reported by English sources to be offering previously, though possibly with an even smaller portion paid up front than had been the case before. Supposedly, this time around Sevilla are okay with this.

The paper further claim that representatives from Liverpool are in Sevilla today to finalise the deal, and that the club are now working through the options as they search for a possible replacement for the young Spanish international. The only question now for Liverpool fans is whether the information the Spanish side is feeding Estadio Deportivo is a fair reflection of reality this time around.

The lack of depth at fulback appears to be close to a solution, as Ian Ayre is in Spain to wrap up a loan-to-buy deal for Javier Manquillo and the permanent transfer of Alberto Moreno.

Liverpool's pursuit of Alberto Moreno has taken up most of the summer, but reports tonight suggest that the club might finally be close to finalizing a deal that would bring the 21-year-old to Merseyside from Sevilla. This news comes alongside speculation that Ian Ayre's travels to Spain will first see him tie up a loan move for Atletico Madrid's 20-year-old right-back Javier Manquillo; as reported last week, the club are hopefully of making the temporary move a permanent one once the terms of the loan are up, ultimately giving Liverpool two of Spain's more promising fullbacks.

This comes as positive news in both cases, but particularly so with Moreno, who had been monitored closely over the past two months. Disagreements about the valuation--Sevilla wanted closer to £20m, with Liverpool standing firm at £16m--pushed the deal off, and there was also talk that there was a desire from player, club, or both to have him around to face Real Madrid in the Spanish Supercopa. Whatever the case, renewed reports of a deal are welcome, and hopefully they hold true this time.

In the case of Manquillo it's still complicated, but Liverpool are apparently confident at their chances of having him on-board permanently in the next few seasons, and he could combine with Moreno to solve Liverpool's fullback positions for years to come. Their arrivals would cast doubts over the longer-term futures of Jose Enrique and Glen Johnson, and bring further competition for places with the likes of Jon Flanagan, Jack Robinson, and Martin Kelly.

Ideally there's some sort of positive resolution coming in the next few days on both fronts, with Liverpool set to return to Merseyside by next weekend at the latest. From there it's a two-week sprint to get prepared for Southampton's visit, which could feature a defensive unit with at least a couple of new faces in the starting eleven.
