After a narrow victory to run their winning streak to five, we take a closer look at what it all means for the Reds.

Liverpool are still not likely to sneak into the top four, but they look determined to at least finish the season on a run of strong results. While tonight’s 1-0 victory over Fulham wasn’t the most convincing of wins, it was a win nonetheless, and it made five matches in a row where the Reds took all three points.

The first-half performance was both excellent and frustrating. Klopp’s side were in full control and orchestrating some scintillating attacking play, but the final ball really wasn’t there. Nearly everyone who was regularly getting into the final third seemed to misplay a final pass or shot at least once. Luckily they did get the (admittedly soft) penalty kick that allowed them to get on the scoreboard.

The second half was much dicier. It started with more exciting attacking play that was let down by the final ball, but it slowly turned into the Reds looking like they were okay with just making sure Fulham didn’t score, and then devolved into defending with a bit of desperation at the end.

So, lets take a look at some of the winners and losers from what ended up being a bit of a strange performance overall.

Winners

The Trent Alexander-Arnold Midfield Experiment

Trent continues to look more and more like he belongs in midfield with each passing game. It’s hard to overstate how impressive he was tonight, especially for the first 60 minutes or so. He was doing everything you want a midfielder to do.

The Scouser was making tackles and interceptions, popping up with some dangerous shots from distance, and pinging the ball around like it was nothing (as per usual). He also displayed some excellent close control and looked completely calm under pressure in those tight spaces that midfielders typically need to operate in. He might truly have a future in the midfield.

Ibrahima Konaté

One of the biggest reasons the Reds are getting away with shifting their right-back to the center is Konaté. Ibou was immense once again at the back. He is covering a ton of ground on the right because of the space Trent’s central positioning is leaving, and he is doing it extremely well. He was calm, confident, and strong tonight, and he made a couple of superb tackles to prevent chances in some very dangerous areas. Liverpool would not have five wins on the trot if not for the play of Ibou.

Mo Salah’s Penalty Kicks

Mohamed Salah converted a penalty kick for the second straight match after missing two in a row, and he seems to have his PK mojo back. While the one he scored against Tottenham on Sunday was well taken, you could see the recent misses were weighing on his mind as he stepped up to the spot. The Egypitian definitely held back just a bit as he fired it under the bar.

That was not the case tonight. Salah went up the middle, right under the bar, like he did against Spurs, but he absolutely leathered this one and it was obvious he had no doubts he’d score it.

The Referees

After a couple days of talking almost non-stop about incompetent officiating and the way Jürgen Klopp reacted to it on Sunday, Stuart Atwell and his crew were quite refreshing tonight. There were no egregious errors, and they got the vast majority of the close calls correct. There were no dustups between the teams or with the officiating crew as Atwell kept the game under control and refrained from being a pompous ass. Hopefully Paul Tierney was taking notes.

Losers

Comfortably Closing Out A Win

While it was certainly better than allowing Tottenham to equalize in stoppage time after leading 3-0 after 15 minutes, the Reds still did not look comfortable in the closing stages as they tried to see out a 1-0 victory tonight.

The players up front made questionable decisions and silly turnovers while failing to convert a number of promising counter-attacks as Fulham pushed more numbers forward in the dying minutes. The midfield were too easily bypassed and the defense too easily thrown into disaray, and this very easily could’ve ended in a draw if not for Alisson Becker.

You take the wins any way you can get them, but this team is really playing with fire in the way it tries to hold onto a late lead.

What Happens Next

Top four will still take a significant meltdown from Manchester United or Newcastle United, but this five match winning streak has the Reds primed to take the fight for fifth down to the wire. Liverpool are now five points clear of Spurs and Aston Villa, so it really looks like Brighton are the biggest competition for the spot in Europe next season.

The Seagulls currently sit seven points behind the Reds, but they have three games in hand and still control their own destiny for fifth place. Unfortunately for them, Brighton have a tough final stretch as they’ll have to face five of the seven teams above them in the table in their remaining seven fixtures. Given that brutal schedule, Liverpool have to be the favorites for the Europa League spot right now.

With a narrow win over Fulham in the Premier League in the books, we want you to help us choose Liverpool’s man of the match.

Liverpool held on for a 1-0 victory over Fulham at Anfield tonight. The first half looked like it was going to be a comfortable Liverpool win, but the Reds struggled as the second half wore on and ended up making it a bit tense at the end. While the individual performances largely mirrored the game flow, there were a few standouts.

Trent Alexander-Arnold was immense in his more central role once again, and Ibrahima Konaté did an excellent job of defensively covering the extra space Trent’s new role opens on the right side. Mohamed Salah converted another penalty and gave Fulham’s defenders some problems, and Alisson Becker came up with a couple of huge saves near the end to preserve a narrow lead and the clean sheet.

We’ve narrowed down the options to a few of the players we thought had the best performances for the Reds, now make your choice and vote for who you think should be the Man of the Match—or take to the comments to let us know that we got it wrong by not even including the real man of the match in the options.

Final rounds of the Firmino song coming right up...

Liverpool FC manager Jürgen Klopp provided several injury updates at his pre-game press conference ahead of Fulham’s visit to Anfield tonight.

“Bobby is training and looks good. Pretty much the same for Naby.”

Roberto Firmino, who has been dealing with a groin issue, was confirmed to be back in training, though the Fulham game will likely come too soon. It should ensure that Firmino will be ready for the season's final games and a nice send-off for a player who has done it all in his tenure at the club. Naby Keita, who has been out with an unspecified injury, will also be for the final stretch of the season, which will also mark his last games for the club.

Meanwhile, Diogo Jota, who grabbed the winner in dramatic fashion against Spurs on Sunday, is a doubt for Fulham.

”Diogo is struggling [back issue]. Couldn’t train for Spurs, but he played and he hasn’t trained since. He’s a doubt, I hope he recovers.”

With Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez both ready to go, expect the team to play it safe with Jota and give him a rest while he recovers.

The Reds are looking for a fifth win in a row as they take on Fulham on Wednesday.

Jürgen Klopp may be embroiled in a bit of touchline controversy at the moment, but Liverpool still have a game to play. They host 10th placed Fulham at Anfield for the midweek fixture. As it has been this whole spring, the game is a must win if they want to keep their extremely slim top four hopes alive.

So after once again speaking about his disrespectful celebration of Diogo Jota’s winning goal against Tottenham on Sunday, Klopp got down to business.

The three fast goals Liverpool scored in the first half against Spurs were fantastic, but the way they allowed their opponents to claw their way back in during the second half was disheartening.

Klopp acknowledged his players ‘taking their foot off the gas’, he said that he hoped they could take the good aspects of their performance into the next match.

“That we let that happen, we were guilty for that, that we could turn it around again all credit to the boys that they did that,” Klopp said.

“Diogo had that nous to realize what will happen and be in the best possible position to finish the situation off. So, that’s football games. In short turnarounds between the games, it’s clear that we want to build on stuff, that was really good, like really good, and to sort the things we didn’t do well and in football two yards change the world.”

The problem with the close call wasn’t just that they nearly lost two points. It’s that we’ve seen this team struggle to put games away this season. They have gone five games without a clean sheet. While that also coincides with a good run of results, that luck might not last if they continue to concede so easily.

The Reds look to make it five in a row for the first time this season, as top four hopes get increasingly slim.

Liverpool vs Fulham

| Wednesday, May 3rd |
League | Anfield
8PM BST / 3PM EST

After a four-match win streak with an aggregate goal difference of 15-7, Liverpool look to continue their late-season resurgence, as they intend to avenge their opening day draw to this year’s surprise package Fulham.

Largely tipped to battle it out in the bottom five, the Cottagers have taken many in the league by surprise, starting with the Reds who dropped a point that they had all but taken for granted on opening day, drawing 2-2 at the Craven Cottage as Aleksandar Mitrovic tormented the visiting backline with his physicality.

Marco Silva’s men haven’t been super consistent, often alternating winning streaks and losing runs, but they’ve largely settled into their mid-table role, and currently sit tenth, 11 points behind the Reds.

Fulham will have to make do without Mitrovic, who is serving a suspension, as well as Andreas Pereira, Tim Ream and Layvin Kurzawa — all missing out through injury — relatively speaking huge blows to the team’s goalscoring threat, but former Red Harry Wilson has scored or assisted in three of his last four games and will undoubtedly relish the opportunity to put one in the net at his old ground.

Otherwise, Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson will round out the defense.

In midfield, Naby Keïta remains some way short of match readiness, but otherwize Jürgen Klopp can call on all the big guns, and a trio of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Thiago doesn’t seem unlikely, with Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott and James Milner potential replacements.

Up top, Diogo Jota will miss out with a back injury — likely suffered last weekend at West Ham when he was brutalised by Vladimir Coufal — and Roberto Firmino remains just short of fitness, leading to a likely starting lineup of Luis Díaz, Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah, as Darwin Núñez continues to play second fiddle in Klopp’s new-look possession set-up.

The Liverpool manager has a strained relationship with the official, who he believes has made a number of marginal calls in the past that have hurt his side.

On Wednesday, Liverpool take on Fulham in Premier League action, with the Reds looking to keep their faint top four hopes alive with a victory. At manager Jürgen Klopp’s pre-match press conference, though, Fulham wasn’t the main talking point.

Instead, it was the end of Sunday’s wild 4-3 victory over Tottenham that saw Spurs level in stoppage time before Liverpool scored an even later winner, with Klopp lashing out at the fourth official during the celebrations and at referee Paul Tierney afterwards.

“The whole situation shouldn’t have happened at all,” Klopp noted bluntly when asked about the incident on Sunday. “That’s how it is. But there’s a lot of emotion, a lot of anger in that moment, that’s why I celebrated the way I celebrated.

“There was a situation with a foul on Mo [Salah] but no foul called, not a free kick, and then they scored their goal but then a minute later we scored and you should be happy but I was still angry and shouting ‘without you’ which doesn’t even make a lot of sense.

“But that was all. That was it pretty much and then Paul Tierney came over and I didn’t expect a red card I expected yellow and he said to me for me it’s a red but he’s making it a yellow. We went inside, I tried to calm down but it didn’t work.

“Then the interviews and I opened that box, I stepped into it. How I felt in the moment about Paul Tierney, we have a history. I cannot deny that. Things happened in the past involving big games for us, even if they’re not intentional, so that feeling is there.”

Referee organizations and former officials have since come out hard against Klopp, and the expectation is that a touchline ban is almost inevitable given that as he alludes to this isn’t his first incident with the officials generally or Tierney in particular.

“I created headlines and I really regret that,” Klopp added when asked what he expects to come next. “It really wasn’t necessary so we’re expecting something because everybody is saying there will be something but we haven’t heard anything yet.

The Liverpool manager’s latest incident with an official is expected to earn his a significant punishment.

Following Sunday’s match against Tottenham, Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp hit out at Paul Tierney, citing a “history” of tension with the Manchester-born official and suggesting that the referee had said something “not okay” when showing him a yellow card.

Professional Game Match Officials Limited, or PGMOL, subsequently said that following a review of the audio from Tierney’s mic the official had said nothing wrong and now it appears likely Klopp will end up with an extended touchline ban for the incident.

That’s the word from a number of outlets today, including journalists with ties to Liverpool as well as those with a broader remit, suggesting that those involved in the process are making it known that a significant punishment is on the way for the Reds’ manager.

Meanwhile, Tierney has been backed out of refereeing duties for the coming weekend while the case is ongoing and will instead serve first as the fourth official for West Ham vs. Manchester United before moving to VAR for Nottingham Forest vs. Southampton.

For Liverpool, Stuart Attwell has been assigned to their mid-week match against Fulham and Anthony Taylor will be in charge when they host Brentford on the weekend, with it currently uncertain when the decision will come down regarding Klopp’s punishment.
