After the Reds clawed their way back from two goals down to earn a draw, we dig a little deeper into the winners and losers from the match.

It looked like Liverpool’s already awful week was going to get worse after conceding two early goals to league leaders Arsenal. Rather than fall apart, as we’ve seen too often this season, the Mentality Monsters of seasons past began to emerge. In the end, Liverpool will be frustrated with a draw in a match they really should have won if there is to be any chance of making it into the top four by the end of the season.

Below, we take a look at some winners and losers on the night, and attempt to disentangle narrative from fact.

Winners

Signs of Life
After two absolutely dreadful performances in the last week away to Manchester City and Chelsea, it looked like Liverpool were about to capitulate yet again after conceding two early goals to Arsenal. The Reds managed to claw their way back into the match and dominated the second half. It was great to see the likes of Thiago and Darwin getting the crowd revved up as well, and Anfield was an absolute cauldron by the end of the match.

BOBBY FIRMINO!!!!!
As the song says, give the ball to Bobby and he will score, and that’s exactly what happened late in the second half! Bobby came on as a sub with Liverpool trailing and drifted in to the back post and finishing off a fade-away header off a brilliant cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The Subs
Along with Firmino, Thiago and Darwin Núñez provided a big boost after they came on the pitch in the second half. Thiago was at his hip-swiveling best, riding pressure and playing some sensational passes to set players free into space. Núñez was a handful as he always is, using his pace and 1v1 skills to great effect. He put a beautiful header back across goal that Ibrahima Konaté chested goal bound in the waning moments, but was ultimately saved.

Ibrahima Konaté
The French center back covered a lot of ground, often sliding further right to cover Trent Alexander-Arnold as the right back tucked into midfield. Ibou tracked down runners, clogged up passing lanes, and put in a couple of sensational tackles to thwart quick Arsenal attacks. As mentioned above, he came so, so close to giving Liverpool the deserved win in extra time, but could only chest the ball with it being at an awkward height.

Revitalized Performances
Two of the oft-maligned players this season, Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold, had much stronger performances against Arsenal. Neither were perfect, but they both offered a lot more than we’ve seen in recent weeks and months.

Henderson was more effective with his pressing than he has been in a while, and ended up with two tackles and two interceptions. He was also pretty good on the ball, providing an instinctive redirection that ended up as an assist to Mohamed Salah.

Trent also provided an assist, sending a sensational cross to the back post for Firmino to head home, absolutely roasting Oleksander Ziinchenko on the dribble in the process. The nominally right back varied his deliveries, playing some nice crossfield balls and crosses, and really started to shine late in the match.

Losers

Mohamed Salah
It has certainly not been one of Mo’s better seasons, but he was woeful in front of goal against Arsenal. Yes, he did manage to score, but the ball was actually hit into his shin by an Arsenal defender and into the net. Mo managed to miss the goal entirely from the penalty spot for the second time in a row, and struggled in general with his touch and his shooting boots in and around the box. Mo finished with 3 of his 10 shots on target. He got into dangerous positions in the box, but Mo really had a hard time turning that into offensive output.

Refereeing Standards
In typical fashion, Tierney refused to call blatant fouls in either direction in order to “let the game flow”. It was unsurprising that he lost complete control of the match late in the first half as the match devolved into a rugby match with afters.

Worse than Tierney in the middle, however, was one of the linesman who completely lost the plot. Constantine Hatzidakis awarded Arsenal a free kick for an absolutely blatant dive just a few feet in front of him. He then appeared to reach out and elbow Andy Robertson as he walked past him at the end of the first half. Robertson certainly said something (and was shown a yellow card), but that does not absolve the behavior from the linesman. PGMOL came out with a statement while the match was still going saying they were aware of the incident and were investigating.

A look back at the key moments in Liverpool’s dramatic draw with Arsenal in Premier League action.

Liverpool X - Y Arsenal

Liverpool: Salah 42’, Firmino 87’

Arsenal: Martinelli 8’, Jesus 28’

Pre-Match

Welcoming the league leaders to Anfield when you’re at a point where you really can’t afford many more slip-ups if you hope to keep the dream of top four alive is fun. What could possibly go wrong?

Liverpool will field a lineup that’s a little light on creativity in the midfield with Curtis Jones preferred to Thiago or Harvey Elliott, and an illness is keeping Núñez out of the XI.

The Gunners will start with a very strong lineup. The Reds have their work cut out for them.

First Half

Arsenal get a very early chance off a free kick, but Ibrahima Konaté manages to deflect it out for a corner that comes to nothing.

A few minutes later they open the scoring. Like many of the goals we've seen scored against Liverpool lately, Arsenal attack rapidly and the backline looks completely overwhelmed by their movement and quick passing. Van Dijk had a chance to clear during the rush, but he ends up perfectly touching it right back to Arsenal instead. In the end, Robertson almost gets a touch on the ball as Marintinelli pokes it into the bottom corner, but the Scotsman was a split second too late to prevent the goal.

It's all Arsenal after 20 minutes. Liverpool are mostly just hoofing it up to the front and hoping the forwards can retrieve the ball. Gabriel Jesus very nearly doubles the lead in the 17th minute, but can't keep his finish at the far post down after a perfect ball from Saka from the right wing.

And now Robertson just misses out on an equalizer. Fabinho plays a perfectly weighted pass over the top and Robbo does well to collect it, but he sends his shot just outside the far post.

Paul Tierney, Jürgen Klopp’s favorite referee, actually makes a competent call! On 23 minutes he gives Ben White the game's first yellow for scissoring Diogo Jota down after his slide tackle goes over the top of the ball.

2-0 Arsenal. Liverpool had looked like they may be growing back into it, but Martinelli crosses into Jesus who managed to find space between van Dijk and Robertson and the Brazilian heads it home unchallenged to double their lead. Really poor again from the backline.

Salah gets a chance clean through on goal from the right side, but uncharacteristically pokes it well wide. The vibes are very off.

Granit Xhaka lives up to his reputation as an asshole and goads a retaliatory response from Trent Alexander-Arnold. Both players get booked for their efforts.

Signs of life! Some slick passing by Jones, Jota, and Henderson in the Arsenal box ends with Salah redeeming his previous miss by getting just enough of the ball to finish past Aaron Ramsdale despite a challenge from Gabriel. 2-1 Arsenal now with halftime near.

That's the half. Arsenal were head and shoulders the better side before Xhaka's stupid bullshit seemed to light a fire under a lifeless Liverpool. The goal came almost immediately afterward, and the Reds looked much more assertive for the last few minutes of the half.

Second Half

Robertson enters the half having picked up a yellow for dissent shortly after the halftime whistle. It appears one of the linesmen raised an elbow towards Robbo’s face after the left-back approached him following the whistle. When LFC players understandably lost their shit over the incident, the incompetent buffoon that is Paul Tierney decided the best course of action was to book Robertson for being elbowed.

PENALTYPOOL!!! After Liverpool fully control the first seven minutes coming out of the break, Jota gets clipped down in the box on a corner kick and Tierney, shockingly, points to the spot.

Oh no. Salah steps up and pushes the spot kick wide of the left post. That's two PK misses in a row for the Egyptian and a huge missed opportunity to level things here.

The challenges are flying in all over because Tierney can't call a game for shit and Fabinho gets a deserved yellow. But, Liverpool continue to control things and Ramsdale does well to deny Salah a second. Arsenal look to be under seige with half an hour remaining.

Thiago is coming on for Jones. The Scouser did well for an hour, but the match shifting to one where Liverpool are hemming the Gunners in should set up well for Thiago to help break them down. Darwin Núñez is also coming on for Jota to introduce a little more chaos.

Arsenal seem to have weathered the storm after 25 minutes. Liverpool still look the likelier side to score, but the visitors are getting some time with the ball in the midfield and final third instead of being completely pinned in their own defensive third like they were coming out of halftime.

Klopp brings on Roberto Firmino to replace Fabinho with 12 minutes left. The two sides have traded half chances for the last 10 minutes or so but neither has looked especially likely to score.

Ahhh that was nearly an equalizer from Darwin. Salah beautifully plays the Uruguayan through, but he can't get his shot underneath a sliding Ramsdale.

BOBBY LEVELS!!! Alexander-Arnold nutmegs Zinchenko to get loose on the end line and then crosses into Firmino who nods it home inside the six-yard box. The Kop erupts into Si Senor. Two minutes plus stoppage time to chase a winner.

Trent goes for glory in the 92nd with a shot from a couple yards outside the box, but he gets underneath it and fails to get it on frame. Salah then gets a chance after Robertson chips over the top into the box, but a defender does well to keep him off balance and the shot goes over off his shin.

Now Ramsdale makes a diving fingertip save to keep out a superb curling effort from Salah. Then a chance for Konaté is saved off the line. Salah collects and goes down with Gabriel draped all over his back, but Tierney says no to another penalty and the final whistle goes.

Final Thoughts

After 35 minutes it really felt like Arsenal might run away with this one, but a bit of stupidity from Xhaka changed things completely. The Reds clawed their way back and, in the end, looked like they might snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. The Reds will be happy with a point after such a poor start, but it’s hard to not feel like they should have taken all three with the way the match ended.

With a pulsating draw in the books, we want you to help us choose Liverpool’s man of the match.

After a dismal start to the match, Liverpool roared back to life midway through the first half after Paul Tierney lost control of the match. The Reds ramped up the pressure thanks to subs Thiago and Roberto Firmino in the second half, with the Brazilian scoring late in the second half to give Liverpool the draw. Jordan Henderson had one of his more solid performances of the season, and Ibrahima Konaté was sensational in the back and came a whisker from scoring a late winner.

Now let us know how you saw it. We’ve narrowed down the options to a few of the players we thought had the best performances for the Reds, now make your choice and vote for who you think should be the Man of the Match—or take to the comments to let us know that we got it wrong by not even including the real man of the match in the options.

And as always, a reminder that for anyone visiting on Apple News or Google AMP and looking to cast a vote who can’t see the poll, you can make it visible by navigating to the front page of The Liverpool Offside and loading the full version of the story from there.

Ahead of a clash with title contenders Arsenal, the captain calls for the Reds to embrace the challenge.

Liverpool gear up to face Mikel Arteta’s title-contending Gunners tonight, and Jordan Henderson believes that the Reds cannot feel sorry for themselves despite their dire season.

“Unlike Arsenal, we will have no involvement in the title race this time around and that hurts, but this does not mean we can feel sorry for ourselves”, he wrote in today’s programme notes.

“Our objective now is simple: to keep going right until the end of the season and to do everything in our power to rediscover the form and consistency that has been lost.”

The past four years saw the Reds winning every possible trophy, and going neck and neck with Manchester City to the title race more than once.

“There will be no semi-finals or finals this time around and no potential title deciders, but no-one should make the mistake of thinking that we do not have much to play for. This is Liverpool Football Club and every game matters here, no matter what the targets might be”, wrote Henderson.

Turning their losses into learning will be key.

“Channelling disappointment the right way, dealing with setbacks and developing all the time are essential parts of this process and this is as true now as it was when I first walked through the door here over a decade ago.

“So we have to embrace the challenge together.”

As the remaining games dwindle down, Liverpool welcome Arsenal to Anfield in a must win game. Well, they’re all must wins going forward. Arsenal come on the back of an excellent season when they’ll probably lift the Premier League trophy.

Some good news for the Reds is that Thiago Alcantara may be available to play after 10 games on the injury bench. Virgil van Dijk has also recovered from the illness that kept him out of the goalless draw against Chelsea in midweek. However, Luis Díaz will not be ready to join the team.

Arsenal have won seven Premier League games in a row, including four matches away from home. Gabriel Jesus has returned for Mikel Arteta and picked up a brace in their victory against Leeds United.

However, Liverpool have history on their side against the Gunners. They are currently unbeaten in their last nine Premier League home games against Arsenal. Hopefully this is a trend that will continue on Sunday, and we will see the Liverpool that devastated Manchester United instead of the Liverpool who showed up against Manchester City.

The Reds welcome league leaders Arsenal to Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

Liverpool have had a tough set of games recently. It started last weekend when they played Manchester City and continued midweek against Chelsea. On Sunday, the Reds are set to welcome league leaders Arsenal to Anfield. In years past, this wouldn’t be so concerning, but given Liverpool’s current form, you’d be forgiven if you felt less optimistic.

Fabinho understands the concerns, but in his pre-match interview said he hoped that the team could harness the power of the home fans to find a way to three points.

“We have some days to recover, so it will be good for us [as] we try to prepare this game,” Fabinho said.

“This season when we play at Anfield, it’s usually where we play our best football. We played good games against big teams this season – we beat City, we beat United at home. So yes, we will try to use the crowd and try to play our best football again because if you don’t play, we can’t beat Arsenal.”

It’s hard to believe that this otherwise lackluster season is also the one that included some of the team’s most devastatingly comprehensive victories. It’s the duality of this team, and hopefully they’ll be showing that side of themselves on Sunday.

The Colombian is on the cusp of returning from long-term injury

Speaking ahead of the match with Arsenal at Anfield on Sunday, head coach Jürgen Klopp cautioned supporters against expecting involvement from Luis Díaz. The Colombian has been in full training and is close to a return, but the club seem to be opting for patience.

While Díaz is “training completely normal,” he likely won’t be risked as soon as Sunday. Per Klopp:

The plan with Luis is that he will be available 100 per cent for Leeds. Again, it looks good, everything is fine, but it was a long, long injury and so we have to be careful. We will probably not involve him for Sunday.

While the league leaders will provide a heavy challenge for a Liverpool side struggling with poor form, keeping Díaz healthy long-term is certainly the priority.
