A look back at the key moments in Liverpool’s defeat to Bournemouth away in the Premier League.

AFC Bournemouth 1 - 0 Liverpool

Pre-Match

There’s pressure on Liverpool to perform after their dismantling of rivals Manchester United last weekend. Three points would, however temporarily, put them back into the top four after a long, depressing season outside of it. For this match, Jürgen Klopp has chosen Cody Gakpo in the middle with Mohamed Salah and Darwin Núñez on either side, the same forward line who destroyed United. Stefan Bajcetic replaces Jordan Henderson in the middle, likely with an eye towards the midweek match against Real Madrid. The expected back line is in defense.

First Half

The game started out with a big push from Liverpool, who had the bulk of the possession, as expected. Unfortunately, the first big chance came for Bournemouth after a mistake by Trent Alexander-Arnold. Ouattara got clear and even made it around Alisson, but his attempt on goal thankfully hit the side netting.

Gakpo scored at 10 minutes, but the player is clearly offside and knew it.

A flurry of Liverpool corners on the other end come to nothing, but Liverpool looked motivated to open the scoring, even if it hasn’t happened yet.

So no surprise then that it’s Bournemouth who score first. I can’t imagine there were any Liverpool fans who bet against that inevitable outcome. Ouattara’s cross finds Billing, who gets his shot past Alisson with concerning ease.

Virgil van Dijk misses a good chance to equalize. His unmarked header goes wide and the opportunity goes wanting.

The Reds avoid even more trouble when they both van Dijk and Konaté were deemed to have made clean tackles in the box against Solanke and Billing. The Cherries were outraged that there was no penalty given.

Second Half

Klopp went full attack in the second half, bringing off Elliott in exchange for Diogo Jota at the half. The boss isn’t playing around. Additionally, Roberto Firmino and Jordan Henderson were warming up on the sidelines as well.

Jota forced the keeper into a save early, which was a nice introduction into the game for the Portuguese player.

A triple sub from Klopp here. James Milner, Henderson and Firmino on for Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho and Núñez. None have impressed so this afternoon.

Liverpool received a penalty for a handball after a VAR check, but Salah slams that chance from the spot way wide, denying his team a goal.

This game has been horrid. Do you think the Liverpool players maybe feel like the Champions League is too much effort, so why even be in it next season?

Konaté picked up a yellow card for a foul on Solanke.

Klopp’s final substitution is Fabio Carvalho in for Bajcetic.

Five minutes of added time feels like a cruel joke for this game.

Final Thoughts

My final thought is that I’m going back to sleep now.

A lot of football is in the intangibles

Many of Liverpool’s poor performances this season were written off as indicative of more depth needed in key positions, especially midfield. When watching a lackluster Liverpool play, however, it was impossible to avoid questioning the intangibles: certainly more depth would help, but it didn’t explain fully why 11+ quite good players were simply playing poorly.

In his pre-Bournemouth press conference, head coach Jürgen Klopp was clear on the mood in the camp following the 7-0 crime committed against the deeply unserious Manchester United:

There’s no better mood-booster than a good game for us. Of course you see it in training. We had consistency in the league in the last five games but confidence is a fragile little flower and we have to make sure we keep that.

As Klopp emphasizes, the confidence boost is great news, but it needs keeping up: while the 7-0 suddenly made the second leg against Real Madrid feel a bit less like a dead rubber, a mis-step against Bournemouth could undo all the good feeling.

For Klopp, this means showing some fight against Bournemouth on Saturday — and he anticipates a challenge:

We have to chase and challenge everyone. The main thing is going to Bournemouth and playing a game there. I watched the way they play and it can be really uncomfortable for teams. We might fight for the UCL spots but the fight for staying in the league is just as exciting. I’m sure Bournemouth will fight like crazy.

Though the 12:30PM kick-off away is a challenge to “get up” for, Klopp hopes a solid defense and good atmosphere on the pitch can help his side get things done:

We need more, but fine. [Strong defense is] the basis for everything. The way you defend gives you the stability to attack. The performance is something we have to build on.

Bournemouth play a different system [than the last meeting] and we don’t play at home. We have to show consistency and make sure we create the atmosphere on the pitch.

Can Liverpool put more pressure on top four rivals following their 7-0 battering of Manchester United?

AFC BOURNEMOUTH VS. LIVERPOOL

Liverpool previously put nine goals past Bournemouth this season, but this version of the club is a different outfit: though the Cherries are still heavily in a relegation fight, they’ve picked up points you wouldn’t expect, and are far less open under their new manager.

Against Arsenal they scored from the kick-off, and the Gunners needed heroics with the last kick of the game to walk away with three points. The Reds would do well to watch the showreel of that match — which was an uphill battle for the league leaders — than that of their own high-scoring match earlier this season.

Gary O’Neill has made a good impact on Bournemouth, and is “looking forward” to facing Jürgen Klopp, who he knows from his time as the Liverpool U23s Assistant Manager.

In terms of injuries, Jefferson Lerma will be a late fitness call for O’Neill and his staff. He had featured in every game for Bournemouth this season, but was on the sidelines against Arsenal. Hamed Traorè and Marcus Tavernier are both out for the match against Liverpool, but Lewis Cook is back fit.

The match against Liverpool comes at the tail end of a tough run of fixtures, with the Cherries having faced both Arsenal and Manchester City prior to Liverpool’s arrival. They have Aston Villa next before the international break, but the fight they showed against Arsenal suggests they won’t be eyeing that as their next potential for points. Klopp and Liverpool will have work to do.

Predicted Liverpool Lineup (4-3-3)

Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Fabinho, Bajčetić, Elliott; Salah, Núñez, Gakpo

Per Jürgen Klopp’s pre-match press conference, Thiago, Luis Díaz, and Joe Gomez are all unavailable for Saturday’s match, but Díaz is expected back next week and in the team following the international break.

Though the Reds have had a good week, certainly, following the demolition of Manchester United; the goal tally and the manner of the win will have added to Liverpool’s confidence as they continue fighting for a place in the top four.

Of course, complacency is a danger, given Bournemouth’s place in the league and the nature of the Reds’ last result against the Cherries. Certainly no one will be as pleased with Bournemouth’s hardy showing against Arsenal than Klopp, who will certainly have had his players taking notes on what this Bournemouth side can do.

In terms of personnel, The Reds have had a week since the last match, so rotation for fitness reasons is unlikely. The match mid-week against Real Madrid will come into play, however, so we could see some minor rotation with that in mind: both looking to give the likes of Stefan Bajčetić more minutes, and perhaps giving Ibrahima Konaté a night off since he’s recently returned from injury.

Regardless, the Bournemouth match is a must-win, both in terms of table position and confidence: the Reds have the chance to draw level on points with Tottenham in the early kick-off, and though the 12:30 PM kick-off is never something you want in terms of atmosphere and preparation, it’s certainly an opportunity to ramp up the pressure on surrounding teams.

What the Managers Had to Say

Jürgen Klopp: ““I knew after the 9-0 it wouldn’t be easy when we go there. It’s motivation for them. We don’t play at home and our points tally in away games is far away from the top. We have to create the atmosphere we need on the pitch and use it.”

Gary O’Neill: “The lads will prepare for this like it’s another game against a very, very good side. They’re in good form at the moment and have fantastic attacking threat. It’ll be a tough ask, of course, but we approach the game as one that we need to take three points from.”

Andy Robertson says Liverpool are always motivated to face United—but watching Spurs and Newcastle slip fired them up even more.

It’s been a difficult season for Liverpool football club, but with four wins in their last five league games the team appear to be finding their form when it matters most down the stretch and have reinserted themselves firmly in the top four conversation.

Following their recent revival of domestic fortunes, Sunday’s 7-0 rather put an exclamation mark on all of that as the Reds demolished historic rivals Manchester United at Anfield. As much fun as it was, though, it’s important now to take that energy and use it for the next game.

“You have to enjoy these moments,” noted left back Andy Robertson. “We work hard every week for moments like this. But we have to keep going. We’ve got a massive game Saturday and you have to back it up. It’s pointless getting these results and not being able to back it up.”

It was only a few weeks ago that Liverpool were mired in ninth and had a double-digit deficit to make up if they wanted to be in the top four race. Now, they’re fifth and three points off Tottenham with a game in hand.

The team have gotten the run of results they needed to make up ground—and got the bit of help they needed on the other side of it, too, with teams like Spurs and Newcastle that they were chasing stumbling in recent weeks just as the Reds have begun to belatedly surge.

Having gotten to the point where they might even be considered mild favourites for the top four, the goal is to keep the momentum going with Bournemouth up next before they return to European play with the difficult task of heading to Madrid behind in their Round of 16 tie.

“Pplaying on the Sunday, you sit back and watch all the other results,” Robertson said of a weekend that saw Spurs lose to Wolves while Newcastle lost to Manchester City. “We knew Newcastle would have a tough game at Man City, and Tottenham at Wolves.

“We know in this league anyone can beat anyone. When they’re the two that you’re chasing for the spots, it’s important you capitalise when both of them drop points. That was one of the motivations. We don’t need much motivation to play against Man United but that was an extra motivation.

“The table will look a lot healthier but it’s still not what we want to see. We need to keep pushing, we need a strong finish to the end of the season and we’re making good steps to doing that. But we have to carry this momentum forward and hopefully we can get top four.”

After Liverpool’s BIGGEST WIN EVER over Manchester United, we dig a little deeper into the winners and losers from the match

Holy hell, Liverpool straight up BONKED the crap out of Manchester United. Like, it was a historic bonking. That was the largest margin of victory for Liverpool over Manchester United. Liverpool looked up for it from the off, but it took until just before halftime before the Reds could break through. After the half, however, the attack ramped into overdrive, scoring lightening counters, sweeping team moves, and on opportunistic strikes after forcing a turnover.

Below, we take a look at some winners and losers on the night, and attempt to disentangle narrative from fact.

Winners

A Hat Trick Of Braces
The Liverpool attack has generated chances this season, but the strikers have struggled to convert at times. That was not an issue today, with each of the starting front three scored a brace in a very efficient day in front of goal. Cody Gakpo opened things up right before the half with a trademark move cutting from the left to the right, finishing low to the far post. His second was a thing of beauty, finishing off a sensational bit of dribbling by Mohamed Salah (Lisandro Martinez is still trying to figure out where Mo went) with Gakpo chipping David de Gea from a tight angle.

Darwin Núñez scored both of his with his head off of assists by Harvey Elliott and Jordan Henderson. Núñez seems to be hitting his stride after pulling the xG slingshot back about as far as it could go and now has four goals and an assist in his last five games.

Mohamed Salah had as about a vintage Mohamed Salah game as there ever has been. The Egyptian King was a menace on the right all match long, showing off his speed, tight control on the dribble, and of course his famous left foot. What’s that you say? He scored both with his right? You do you, Mo. He did get a yellow card for taking his shirt off in celebration after his second goal, but seems worth it.

At Anfield since 2017/18, Mohamed Salah has received more yellow cards for taking his shirt off celebrating against Man Utd (2) than Man Utd have scored goals against Liverpool (1). pic.twitter.com/6STtafOQAh
— Squawka (@Squawka) March 5, 2023

That second goal took him past Robbie Fowler for the most Premier League goals in club history. Oh, he also chipped in with two assists for good measure. Like Núñez, Salah is heating up at the pointy end of the season. He has five goals and five assists in his last 10 games.

Bobby Firmino
Just a couple of days after news broke that Bobby would not be returning to Liverpool. Anfield serenaded the Brazilian forward with his song early and often even though he started the match on the bench. Firmino came on the pitch to thunderous applause in the 79th minute, and wasted very little time before getting on the score sheet. He set up the historic Salah goal in the 83rd, and then converted his own in the 88th after tenaciously tracking down the ball in the box and putting it between de Gea’s legs. Not going to lie, I got teary after that (and when he came on).

Clean Sheets
Don’t look now, but Liverpool have kept five clean sheets in a row (in the Premier League). Ibrahima Konaté was imperious in the back today, snuffing out trouble on more than one occasion in positions the Reds have been beaten in earlier this season without him.

Pressing
It’s still not pretty at times, but Liverpool have started to dial in the press much better than earlier in the season. Harvey Elliott in particular showed up snapping at people’s heels like an angry goose.

Liverpool’s Top Four Hopes
Look, there is still quite a way to go, and lots of work to be done. This weekend, however, should provide quite a boost to the Reds in their quest to finish in the top four. Along with the win over Manchester United, other results went Liverpool’s way as well. Spurs went full Spurs in a loss to toothless Wolves. They now sit just three points ahead of Liverpool in fourth despite a game in hand.

Meanwhile, Newcastle continued their poor run of form, taking their second loss in a row, and their second loss of the season. They now sit a point behind Liverpool, though the magpies do have a game in hand.

The #FSGOUT Banner
Look, I get it. There are people out there who would prefer new owners. I can’t say I agree, but that’s besides the point. The narrative of having an #FSGOUT banner flying over Anfield before the Reds ran riot over their hated rivals is pretty amusing though. Especially considering it was many of the new signings from the past two seasons or younger squad players who put the Red Devils to the sword.
