Goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher reflected on his role in Wednesday's victory over Derby County.

On Wednesday, Caoimhín Kelleher set a new standard amongst Liverpool goalkeepers by winning his fourth penalty shootout. He did it in just his 18th senior appearance for the Reds.

Afterwards, the 23-year-old Republic of Ireland international reflected on the win and the role he has played in Liverpool's successes via penalty shootout in the League Cup in recent seasons.

"I just tried to focus on helping the lads, trying to save a few," said Kelleher, who managed a little more than his understated response might suggest, stopping three of Derby County's five shots as the Reds edged the shootout 3-2.

"They go through the footage of penalties with me," he added of his preparations do before the match for a potential shootout. "But on the day they can change their mind and do anything. Thankfully, tonight it worked out.

"I've always said, I think this cup has given me a lot of opportunities so every time I play, I always want to get through to the next round to give me another opportunity to play. Especially for the young lads as well, I think you saw tonight a lot of young players getting their chance .

"So the more times we can win in this competition the further we can get and the more game time for the younger players as well. That’s always a plus."

As the Reds secure advancement to the next stage of the Carabao Cup, we take a look at some of the big winners on the night.

We love a penalty shootout out, don’t we. Liverpool move into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup after winning their third shootout in just over eight months, this time turning over League One’s Derby County 3-2 after a scoreless draw in regulation time. The customary Kelleher heroics took place, of course, but there was much more to say about a match that on paper may look like not much.

Below, then, we crown the winners and losers on the night.

Winners

The Yutes (Generic): Naturally, the narrative surrounding any match in which the participants are separated by 40-something steps on the football ladder will lean towards the all-conquering behemoth of the past five years being expected to easily beat the team that was relegated due to financial crisis less than six months ago.

The reality, of course, was that despite the kits on display, the Liverpool side that started tonight’s match consisted of 55% teenagers, a trio of backups who had played a total of 77 minutes between them this season, and two legitimate first team contenders.

As such, it was rather impressive how the very young Reds were able to control a match against a team of genuine professionals, and, despite the lack of the necessary pace, dynamism and cutting edge up top to convert their overall performance into telling moments in front of goal, were never really in trouble at the other end either.

It may have taken some first teamers stepping in at the end, and some goalkeeping heroics to wrap it up, but the advancement to the next round happened on the back of a quality performance from a bunch of Liverpool kids, and that is both very encouraging and something one should not take for granted just because of the colour of their shirt.

The Yutes (Specific): Just gonna go ahead and list them.

Calvin Ramsay looks like a tremendous piece of scouting. Sporting a wonderful athletic frame and great quickness for a player his size, the 18-year old is the archetypal modern fullback, equally comfortable overlapping as he is cutting inside, picking a variety of crossed deliveries and cutbacks with either foot depending on the circumstance, while offering enough of a physical presence to handle himself against senior attackers.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is a fairly singular talent in world football and along with the uncertainty of player development represents the largest hurdle to Ramsay every locking down a starting spot at Liverpool, but the Scot showed tonight exactly why the Reds picked him up, and that he can provide legitimate cover for Trent sooner than many may have thought.

Stefan Bajcetic continues to show why the coaching staff at Anfield loves him so much. The weight of pass isn’t always there yet, and he has physical limitations that will continue to matter until he fills out his frame, but the 18-year old just looks like a footballer. The pace of his play, the way he shapes his body to receive or pass or deceive, and the way his head is constantly swiveling just screams Cultured Midfielder, and if his development continues down its current path, it’s difficult to see a future in which the Spaniard isn’t a contributor on Merseyside.

Ben Doak was spectacular. Sure, he stumbled and sliced his first shot miles wide from six yards out, but in 20 minutes on the pitch, the 16-year old completed more dribbles than any other player on the pitch, fully half of Liverpool’s successful attempts, and one fewer than the entire Derby team. The former Celtic starlet gave Derby fullback Louie Sibley absolute fits for every minute of his cameo, taking the shape of his performances with the youth teams into the senior world with gusto. An instant fan favourite and definitely one to look out for in the immediate and long-term future.

Harvey Elliott is barely even considered a yute anymore, given that he makes the starting XI more often than not for Jürgen Klopp, but it is important to remember that the Starboy is still only 19 years old. He scored the decisive penalty, of course, coolly slotting into the bottom corner after sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to win it for the Reds, but before that, he had been the catalyst for Liverpool’s late effort to finish things off in regulation time.

Drifting between central midfield, right wing and attacking midfield, Elliott was at the heart of everything the Reds succeeded at after his introduction — he racked up 46 touches in 30 minutes, a ridiculous number for a non-defender — finding space, driving at goal, setting up intricate triangles or big switches, and even getting into the box, where he really should have wrapped things up after receiving the ball 12 yards out but failed to place his first-time effort out of Wildsmith’s reach.

19-year olds just playing for top European teams is not as common as many seem to believe, and Harvey Elliott is one of the five or six most gifted teenagers in world football. Red to his core as well. Love that for us.

Big Kells: Best cup keeper on the planet? You decide.

More penalty shootout saves than any Liverpool goalkeeper in history too. And when push comes to shove, he scores them as well.

Losers

Shrug emoji: Nobody, really. Some of the less heralded youngsters were unable to impact the game as much as they would have wanted, and sure it would have been nice to get a win in regulation time, but, honestly, this is the sort of low-stakes game that is just fun to watch and in the end they pulled out the win, so who cares.

A look back at the key moments in Liverpool’s penalty shootout win over Derby in League Cup action.

Liverpool FC 0 - 0 Derby County

Pre-Match

Klopp sends out a completely changed lineup from the weekend, filled to the brim with youths. Of note, Calvin Ramsey finally gets his first start as a Red, so that’s exciting! Joe Gomez gets the captain’s armband, and he’ll be starting alongside Nat Phillips. Aside from Fabio Carvalho, there’s not many players on the pitch who you’d expect much of an attacking threat from. However, Klopp has Firmino and Darwin Nunez to call upon off the bench.

First Half

Despite the highly changed and largely inexperienced side, the Reds start off well and on the front foot. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain just misses wide with a well-hit volley from the edge of the area, and it’s a shame because it would’ve been a hell of a goal.

Layton Stewart very nearly opens his Liverpool account after he cuts out an errant pass out of the back, lays it off for Carvalho, who then returns it to Stewart. The pass is a bit behind him, and he can’t quite turn it on target. Unlucky!

Liverpool generally have the better of it in the first half, without creating loads of chances. I’m sure Darwin is licking his lips, hoping to get a run at these League 1 defenders.

Second Half

Liverpool appear to be a bit more direct to start the second half, and have created a few half chances in the early going. That said, the game is just a bit more open in general, and Derby have also nearly got in on a couple of occasions.

On the hour mark, Klopp brings on Roberto Firmino, Darwin Nunez, and Harvey Elliott for Fraudendorf, Stewart, and Bobby Clark. The subs have an immediate impact, and Liverpool are very much now in control and on the front foot. Nat Phillips just won a ball back at the edge of the opposition’s penalty area.

With 10 minutes to go, Elliott very nearly opened the scoring after a brilliant chip over the top of the defense from Ox put him in. Liverpool might not be banging the door down, but they are at least knocking very loudly.

No one could break the deadlock, so we go to pens.

Penalties

Derby: McGoldrick O, Hourihane X, Forsyth X, Sibley O, Dobbin X
Liverpool: Bajcetic X, Oxlade-Chamberlain O, Firmino X, Nunez O, Elliott O

Final Thoughts

The Reds did just enough to get through. Kelleher is once again the man of the hour, saving three penalties in the shootout. And Elliott took his winning penalty with James Milner levels of coolness under pressure. The Reds go marching on!

Liverpool's captain says winning the League Cup last season held extra meaning because of how many players had a hand in it.

With the football calendar stuffed to bursting with Premier League and Champions League football plus the FA Cup and countless international commitments for the game's top players, at times it can be easy to think of the League Cup as something of an afterthought.

England's second cup competition has a rich history, and Liverpool in particular have had plenty of success in it, but the reality is that it falls somewhere down the pecking order. Or at least it does until the game kicks off and it becomes just as important as any other for the players and fans.

"After winning the trophy last season, this is a competition that means a great deal to everyone involved with Liverpool," reflected captain Jordan Henderson. "So it is great to be able to participate in it once again.

“The fact that we won the cup earlier this year speaks for itself. As captain, I was fortunate to be given the honour to lift the trophy and that is something which will live with me forever."

On paper, Liverpool should be heavily favoured on their 2022-23 League Cup bow against League One side Derby tonight, but with rotation likely and a motivated opponent there's always the chance of an upset and whoever starts for the Reds will need to be sharp and play their best games.

"If you go through each round from last season, everywhere you looked there was someone different making a contribution," Henderson added. "From young players to senior professionals and everyone in between. That’s why it gave all of us so much satisfaction.

“In a hectic fixture schedule we took the opportunity to give young players valuable experience at the highest level. When the time was right and the situation demanded it, the manager brought in more senior players. In each and every round we played with one aim and that was to get through to the next one."

Tonight against Derby they will do the same, seeking to build on positive results against Tottenham in the league and Napoli in Europe before facing Southampton in the final game before English football breaks for the World Cup.

Run, Luis, run.

Speaking to the press ahead of Liverpool FC’s first domestic cup game against Derby County in the Carabao Cup, Assistant Manager Pepijn Lijnders provided an injury update on quite a few senior-team members:

“Naby will be difficult, he’s still training individually. Let’s see for Southampton”

“Millie will definitely be ready for Southampton but this game [against Derby] comes too early for tomorrow.”

“Then we have of course Joel, who is getting closer to team training but will not make Southampton probably.”

“The longer injuries, Luis Diaz is running for the first time on Thursday. That’s good news because we all know how important he was last year and in the second half of the season.

“And Jota will take longer.”

The World Cup break cannot come soon enough, but it’s encouraging that Luis is up and running. Hopefully, he can come back into the squad and provide a boost for the second half of the season like he did last year.

As the League Cup returns, Caoimhin Kelleher looks back on his memorable campaign last season.

The Carabao Cup comes back on Wednesday, and Liverpool are looking to retain their title. Their first match is against League One club Derby County at Anfield. In that trophy-winning run, the undisputed hero was Caoimhin Kelleher, who scored the winning penalty in the final.

Jürgen Klopp has once again said that he’s putting the League Cup in Kelleher’s capable hands. On the eve of the first match back, Kelleher reminisced about what was likely the most insane moment of his career.

“I was really thankful it actually went in. Wherever it went in I didn’t care how, just as long as it went in,” Kelleher said.

“It was bizarre really. I would never have imagined to think of that. When I look back now it’s obviously really special memories for myself. Hopefully something similar can happen this season.”

He admitted that he understood other teams would be eager to go after the current holders, and that it is up to the Reds to defend their title.

“We won it last year so we want to go on and do the same again. Also, for opposition teams maybe playing us is a big incentive to them to beat the reigning champions,” he said.

“Whoever we play will be well up for it but also we want to do the same again and win it. It was a great feeling last year to get the win and hopefully we can do it again.”

Liverpool can use the boost these these last two games before the players split off to play for their respective countries. Tomorrow’s match is the penultimate match for the team until league play resumes in December.

Liverpool return to the Carabao Cup, a competition in which they haven’t lost since October 2020 — an Anfield penalty shootout defeat to Arsenal in which Harry Wilson missed the decisive penalty, good luck remembering that one — and they do so at home, getting a visit from League One promotion hopefuls Derby County, a team they have only faced once in the past 15 years, a famous win in the glory days of Dancing with the Stars sensation Ragnar Klavan.

The Rams were relegated after a 21-point deduction due to financial breaches saw them finish in 23rd place under Wayne Rooney’s stewardship. The drop has not gone smoothly either, with goals hard to come by, and tomorrow’s visitors and League One’s seventh placed team have only won one of their last five games in all competitions.

Paul Warne’s side have had some injury troubles this season and were unable to name a full bench for the Rams’ FA Cup clash at the weekend, so while top scorer David McGoldrick and Conor Hourihane are pushing for a return to the XI, Curtis Davies, James Chester and Tom Barkhiuzen are all set to miss out through injury.

Projected Liverpool Lineup (4-3-3)

Kelleher; Ramsay, Gomez,Phillips, Chambers; Bajcetic, Jones, Elliott; Carvalho, Firmino, Doak

For the Reds, expect major changes, starting in goal, where Caoimhin Kelleher, who you’ll recall scored the winning penalty in last year’s final, will continue as Liverpool’s domestic cup keeper.

Beyond that, it’s all guesswork, with Pep Lijnders confirming the lineup will be based on ‘‘freshness and talent’, but a first Liverpool start for Calvin Ramsay seems nailed one. Joe Gomez and Nat Phillips might make up the centre-back pairing, while the left-back spot is likely to be manned by either Kostas Tsimikas or 18-year old Luke Chambers.

In midfield, Stefan Bajcetic is likely to start, while James Milner and Naby Keïta will be unable to return in time, meaning Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott could both start, although a young talent like Melkamu Frauendorf might be preferred in place of the latter.

Fabio Carvalho looks set to be named in the front line, but with only three healthy senior attackers available, it is uncertain whether the like of Roberto Firmino, Darwin Núñez and Mohamed Salah will be involved at all, or if Jürgen Klopp goes with somebody like the extremely impressive Ben Doak up top.

What the Managers Said

Pep Lijnders: “It’s good to say now that everybody who knows us now over the last years knows how we deal with this competition. The reason why we change is always that we want freshness and we want talent and we believe that to win the game tomorrow, we always want to put a team out who has to prove, who wants to show, who wants to bring us further in this cup.”

Paul Warne: “We need to put a good performance on. There’s loads of people traveling, it’s a good game for the lads to play in, an occasion as such, but it’s only an occasion if you perform, there’s no occasion if you go and get a good cracking.“
