Liverpool 1 - 2 Leeds United

Liverpool: Salah 13’
Leeds United: Rodrigo 5’, Summerville 89’

Pre-Match

Jordan Henderson starts this one on the bench in favor of a midfield trio of Harvey Elliott, Fabinho, and Thiago Alcantara. It’s also good to see Darwin Núñez back in Premier League action starting up front with Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino.

First Half

Salah nearly starts the game off with a goal after some confusion by the Leeds keeper. However, his shot is deflected for a corner that leads nowhere.

A horrible mix-up on the other end between Alisson and Joe Gomez doesn’t go as lucky for the Reds. Rodrigo taps in the miscue past a desperate Alisson, and the hosts are done 1-0 only five minutes in. This is not the away-to-Ajax energy we were all hoping to see.

Thankfully, Liverpool returned the favor and evened the score after 13 minutes. The opportunity started with a corner. Andy Robertson hefted the ball high and far past the scrum in the center of the box. Trent Alexander-Arnold retrieved in and got it to Salah, then back to Trent. Trent’s shot from distance sailed over the keeper’s head and right to Robertson’s feet. The wingback didn’t hesitate to loft the ball into the box, where Salah was there to tuck it away into the back of the net.

20 minutes in, sloppy passing and a resulting foul nearly give Leeds the opportunity to regain the upper hand. A long free kick goes out wide and a great cross from Rasmus Kristensen finds Brenden Aaronson’s head. The shot clatters off the crossbar, letting off the Reds.

Leeds appear content to sit back and wait for the counterattack. In the last 15 minutes of the first half, it was all Liverpool, taking corner and corner to no avail.

Second Half

Liverpool are out for the second half looking a lot livelier and more precise than the first. The passes are connecting and the Reds are pressing Leeds high up the pitch.

At 60 minutes, Klopp makes a double substitution with Fabinho and Elliott making way for captain Henderson and Curtis Jones. Jones makes an instant impact, using quick feet to work with way into the box and creating an opportunity for Robertson. Unfortunately, the shot went straight to the keeper.

After some Leeds persistence, the substitutions seem to have revitalized the Reds even more. Several good attacks from Liverpool lead to a few corners and near-misses, but not that precious second goal.

If nothing else, at least the crowd is up for it tonight. Also up for it (see what I did there) is Meslier, who tipped a stinging shot from Núñez up and over the bar. Before the corner can happen, James Milner replaces Alexander-Arnold. The former takes the corner kick, and it results in a scramble in front of Leeds’ goal before the ball is finally knocked away.

Robertson needs some medical attention after a clash of heads, but thankfully looks alright.

A tame header from Firmino towards goal gets briefly fumbled by Meslier, but the keeper jumps on it. That will be a moment that will haunt Klopp and his team as Summerville quickly picks up a winner on the other end.

Final Thoughts

Excuse me I’m just going to double check when the World Cup starts.

Liverpool have had a difficult start to their 2022-23 Premier League campaign, now the focus is on turning it around.

As difficult as Liverpool’s start to the league season has been, their struggles pale in comparison to those of Leeds United, who appear early favourites for relegation after a difficult start to their second year back in the Premier League.

Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp, though, isn’t taking anything for granted ahead of their match on Saturday, saying their opponents have played well enough to deserve more than nine points from the two wins and three draws managed in 11 games.

“I saw the last three games and I have to say there’s massive difference between the results [Leeds] got and the performance they put in,” Klopp noted. “We can look at the last two, or the last four, five, six games where they didn’t get the result.

“So you think, ‘Oh, they are in a bad moment.’ Then you watch the game, and you think, ‘Oh, actually they are in a good moment.’ They just don’t bring it over the line but they caused everybody massive problems so that’s the Leeds I prepare for.”

When it comes to Liverpool, Klopp similarly believes they have been better than many of their results—and he thinks they could have and possibly should have won against Nottingham last weekend rather than coming away with a 1-0 loss.

Statistics suggest Leeds have a better case for feeling hard by than the Reds, though—by expected points they’re 11th rather than 18th, while Liverpool are 7th. However, results for both trail performances. And both will feel they need a positive result.

“Around the Nottingham game we had quite a few positive performances and results, but we cannot ignore the Nottingham game as well,” Klopp added. “We were not outstanding at Nottingham, but it was a game I think we should have won anyway.

“We didn’t, but around that the reaction in the games from the boys was really good. In difficult moments, overcoming the difficulties. That’s what we are trying in the moment, and it worked out a couple of times and now we have to keep going.”

The Liverpool forward has been in scoring form in recent weeks

In his pre-match press conference ahead of Leeds United this Saturday, manager Jürgen Klopp briefly touched on the early reaction to Darwin Núñez from those outside the club.

“Darwin came here after a short break, flew straight to Asia, didn’t speak English, new team, and the price - and then everyone judges straight away. Started well, scored v City/Fulham, then red card. He was embarrassed. Confidence was knocked.”

Klopp, who sees his job as “to bring the best out of the boys,” is happy with the subsequent progress from Núñez:

“He’s involved in a lot, a lot of finishing moments. [October] was a great month for him.”

While giving the Uruguayan praise, however, Klopp was careful to keep the striker’s recent performances in context:

“Darwin is so exciting but he has to stay fit and be available all the time. We work on all different areas and the potential is incredible. Speed, attitude, a real worker, it’s all possible to develop and learn. It’s really exciting.”

Thus far this season, Núñez has played in 13 matches, starting three — adding up to 694 total minutes. In that time, he has scored six (xG 6.87) and assisted one (xA 1.41). He is on 0.78 goals per 90 minutes at this point in his career, which certainly isn’t terrible — particularly when in the context of Liverpool’s overall uneven form and the caveats Klopp has himself provided above.

Can the Reds carry their good form in Europe to the Premier League?

LIVERPOOL VS. LEEDS

7:45PM GMT/2:45PM EST

Leeds have not had the best start to the 2022/23 Premier League season. Following the loss to Fulham at the weekend, manager Jesse Marsch said that it was his job to “stop the bleeding” — not exactly an encouraging place to be.

Their loss at home to Fulham was their fourth straight loss in a league campaign that has seen them win only twice and manage six losses and three draws.

The table doesn’t tell the full story, however: Leeds have faced hard lines this season with goals ruled out and penalties missed. Many of their losses have been quite close, with the scoreline not quite reflecting the story of the game (or the xG stats, come to that).

All this is to say that while results suggest Leeds are struggling, they’re actually playing decently and not taking their chances (or facing hard lines, particularly against Arsenal — something Liverpool can empathize with).

The result of this game will, obviously, very much depend on which version of Liverpool shows up. Given the above, if the Reds give Leeds chances and look disjointed creatively, as they did against fellow league-strugglers Nottingham Forest, this could be a hard watch. On the other hand, a cohesive Liverpool playing under the lights at Anfield could and should be too much for Leeds.

In terms of team selection, Marsch will be without Stuart Dallas and Adam Forshaw, who remain sidelined. Speaking Thursday night, Marsch noted that 48 hours of monitoring would be required before making a fitness decision on Leo Hjelde, Joe Gelhardt, Rodrigo, Luis Sinisterra, and Tyler Adams — all of whom are questionable to play.

Marsch sees a Liverpool side that can be exploited by intensity; Liverpool will hope to be not that version of themselves on Saturday.

Predicted Liverpool Lineup (4-3-3)

Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson; Elliott, Fabinho, Jones; Salah, Firmino, Núñez

Manager Jürgen Klopp is seeing more players return to the side, as Curtis Jones’ recent minutes and interviews emphasize that he’s nearing 100 percent fitness. Ibrahima Konaté, too, is “available” for Leeds, and we could see his return to the side — either to start or as a substitute to get game minutes back into his legs.

Arthur Melo remains sidelined with a long-term injury, but the club are not considering cutting his loan short in January per Klopp. Thiago is back and Jordan Henderson is “fine” after his knock against Ajax, so both experienced midfielders are in contention to start. Joël Matip remains out, and this match is “too soon” for Naby Keïta. Long-term injuries continue to sideline Luis Díaz and Diogo Jota.

Thus Klopp, who will not face a touchline ban following his red card against Manchester City, will have a lot of decisions to make in his line-up decisions for midfield and defense.

What the Managers Had to Say

Jurgen Klopp: “For different reasons, I didn’t think of the general situation of the league. But I saw Leeds now, I saw the last three games and there was a massive difference between the performances they put in and the results.”

Jesse Marsch: “It has to be our best game, our best counter-pressing game, it has to be our most disciplined game, and it has to be our most intensive game. In those standards we have to know make sure that we’re at our highest level.”

The Scouse midfielder was out for a long stretch due to injury

Curtis Jones came on for the final phase of Liverpool’s win against Ajax in Amsterdam on Wednesday, after an extended period of absence from the team.

After his return, he spoke briefly to Liverpool.com, and noted that while he is not all the way there physically, he’s ready to be back in contention for game time:

“Fitness-wise, I wouldn’t say I am 100 per cent yet but I’m definitely almost there.

“I was out for 10 weeks [and] I’ve done all my recovery stuff and fitness stuff but it’s never the same as a game so I’m just taking it each game at a time and then hopefully I’ll be back to 100 per cent soon.”

His injury itself was an odd one, but he’s pleased to be back: “It was a bone injury and if you get a bone injury it’s always from a bad tackle or something like that but it wasn’t, they [the medical team] said it was from a stress response.

“I don’t know what it was from, [maybe] a bad pitch or an overload of things. So, it was unusual but it’s fine now. I’m back, I’m playing, I’m happy and I’m smiling again, so happy days.”

In his interview, he spoke at length on the causes of Liverpool’s uneven start to the 2022/23 season:

“It’s on us I’d say. The manager and his staff can pick a team and the fans may say it’s a strong team or they might say, ‘He hasn’t played for a while and he’s come in so he can make the team weaker’, but at the end of the day it is on us. As I said, he picks his team so it’s down to us to go out there and perform.

“Of course, it depends on the type of game. If it’s a cup game he might tweak his team a bit, young kids come into the side and they know that they have a huge role to play because they are part of the team. Then if we are coming across a Champions League side or a Premier League side, then it’s on the ones that are classed as the ‘bigger’ players to take it upon themselves and show what they are capable of doing.

“And for players like myself that are coming in from being out for a while [and] seeing the team in, I wouldn’t call it a struggle but a bit of a dip, it’s to try to come in and help the team find their 100 per cent perfect form. So, we all have our roles and we’re definitely there for that.”

The five matches before the World Cup break might well present an opportunity for Jones and the Reds to get back into top form. Does Jones see it this way?

“One hundred per cent. But if not, it’s not a thing I sulk about anymore. I know that I play a role in the team and when I’m back to my best I know that it will be a bigger role, but at the same time you have to give credit to the lads who are in the team now, who are doing well. I have to just wait and when the chance comes, I’ve got to take the chance and keep my shirt.”

Jones knows the team don’t do it alone, and hopes the fans will help — especially against Leeds, who the Reds play for a Saturday night game at Anfield:

“As everybody has seen for years now, we’re a team that has a bond with the fans, so if the game is a little bit flat the fans will start to sing. If there’s a challenge they will be up on their feet shouting and stuff so that gives us a boost. If we’re playing well they are singing our names and singing the songs… and if the game is a bit flat, it only takes a small chance and the fans are there again and they give us the boost. That brings the best out of us so it will be a good game and I’m looking forward to it, definitely.”

The Reds boss was fined £30,000 for his sending off against Man City but will not miss any matches.

Jurgen Klopp has escaped a touchline ban resulting from his red card offense during the 1-0 Liverpool win over Manchester City.

The FA had issued charges last week after the Reds boss berating of a linesman for not calling a foul for City’s Bernardo Silva blatantly manhandling of Mohamed Salah resulted in his sending off.

A touchline ban was expected to follow, but the FA declined to issue a ruling prior to Liverpool’s fixture against Nottingham Forest the following weekend. However, while the English footballing body ultimately decided to fine Klopp £30,000 for his conduct, the German manager was able to avoid a ban along with officially admitting that his behavior had been “improper”

Klopp had readily admitted fault immediately following the incident:

“Of course, red card, my fault. I went over the top in the moment,” he said of the incident at the time.

“I don’t think I was disrespectful to anybody, but when you look at the pictures back, I know myself, at 55 years, the way I look in these moments is already worth a red card – who cares what I say.

“I lost it in that moment, it’s not OK. But I think, a little bit as an excuse, I would like to mention: how can you not whistle that foul?”

The sanction levied is subject to appeal by both Klopp and the FA, however the Reds boss is set to be on the touchline for Saturday’s clash with Leeds.

With Champions League advancement secured, finding a way to get the right results in the Premier League is all that really matters in the coming weeks.

While the 2022-23 season has so far proved unexpectedly difficult for Liverpool in the Premier League, the Champions League has been a more optimistic place and that continued on Wednesday with the Reds securing advancement to the knockout rounds.

At times in the first half Ajax looked the better side, but the Reds flipped the narrative when they scored late in the first half—and then came out firing in the second, adding a pair of goals through Darwin Nuñez and young Harvey Elliott, who put a bow on the result.

“I think that’s two in two now,” said Elliott, who scored his first in Europe last week away at Rangers. “It’s always nice to get on the scoresheet and when the chances fall, I just need to make sure I take it and that’s what I did tonight, but most importantly it’s about the win.

“I’m just happy I’ve contributed. Tonight it was a half-chance and this is what it’s all about, you just need to make sure you take these opportunities. But most importantly it’s about the win, getting three points, and going back to England happy taking it into the weekend.”

After stumbling against Nottingham Forest last weekend and robbing themselves of any momentum built up by way of a pair of 1-0 victories over Manchester City and West Ham, Liverpool sit eighth. It’s far from where they expected to be at the start of the campaign.

It’s still relatively early in the season, though, and they’re potentially two wins away from being in the thick of the top four fight, knowing a victory over Leeds on Saturday would set them up for a massive game the following week when they take on Tottenham.
