With a draw with Everton in the books, we take a closer look at what it all means for the Reds.

In a vacuum, a draw away to Everton is not the end of the world. Hell, we’ve done it 9 of the last 11 visits. But in the context of a poor start in the league—as many dropped points as won after 6 matches—and a title challenge that appears over before it even began, it’s a bad draw.

Worse yet, the Blues will be absolutely delighted.

Anyway, let’s look at some of the finer things from the match.

Winners

Top 4 Race

Today’s result—again, not in isolation—should disabuse us all of any notion of being title race contenders. Of course there are mitigating circumstances: injuries, underperforming xG (other than the blip that was Bournemouth), hitting the woodwork loads of times, a dodgy decision or two against us, and so on. But anything short of a historic run—the Reds would need to win 25 or 26 of the remaining 32 matches to break 90 points—means that a title race is already all but off the table. Needless to say that this side does not look capable of putting together that run of games at this juncture.

However, there’s still the small matter of qualifying for the Champions League, which is a much lower hurdle to clear, despite the bad start. Instead of having to go at a 90-point clip, the Reds simply need to aim for the low-to-mid 70’s, or roughly 2 points a game. We haven’t managed that over the first six, but that’s definitely a reasonable target once (if) we get a few more players returning from injuries.

Teams have latched onto this method of frustrating and disrupting Liverpool’s rhythm, and for good reason. Even at our poorest, Liverpool are a threat when they gather up a head of steam. The Reds just managed to punish Newcastle for their antics, but Everton, in front of their home crowd, were able to get away it. Klopp & Co. need to come up with better strategies to cope with this negativist football. Look for more of the same from many sides this season.

Conceding First

Liverpool are so committed to conceding first, that they even managed it in a nil-nil draw. Impressive. Jokes aside, and as we’ll discuss more below, Liverpool really tried conceding first. Please. Liverpool. I beg you. Stop.

Talking Tactics

We’ve seen flashes of what Klopp wants to do by keeping Salah and Diaz wide, to create space and more fluidity in attack from the fullbacks and midfielders. Bobby Firmino’s goal against Newcastle was a shining example of it working. However, six games in (again, the Bournemouth blip not withstanding), it’s starting to look like a massive misstep from our coaching staff.

The Reds look both out of ideas in attack and extremely vulnerable in defense. Both sides of this worthless coin were on display today.

Liverpool created just 1.39 xG (according to Understat), with their biggest chance not coming until Diogo Jota’s 0.15 xG chance in the 94th minute. That Liverpool’s biggest chance was just 0.15 xG is also not an encouraging sign. Simply put, the Reds just aren’t creating big enough chances to really worry the opposition.

In continuing the worrying trend on defense, the Reds gave away a massive chance to Neal Maupay (0.63 xG), and another to Connor Coady. One was smothered by Alisson Becker (thank Fowler) and the other was chalked off for being offside. In both cases, the Reds made things far too easy for Everton, and got away with one. Had Maupay been more composed, or if Coady had just held his run for an extra split second, Everton would’ve scored and likely won the tie.

Everything just seems a bit off at the moment. Is it because of the players not implementing the game plan? Or is it the coaching staff who have made a mistake with this new strategy? Injuries don’t help matters, but the Reds should still be able to get results with the players available. Whatever the reason, they need to figure it out, and quickly.

What Happens Next

Somehow Napoli away to open up the Champions League Group Stage seems like a welcome reprieve from the poor start in the league campaign. It’ll likely be our toughest group stage match, but one where a draw would be a good result, in stark contrast to the expectations in the league.

Champions League football might be a welcomed distraction, but things aren’t getting easier in the league from here. The Reds will face Wolves at Anfield before traveling to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea (who, need I remind you, drew all four matches against us last year).

The first Merseyside derby of the season ended in a draw at Goodison Park.

Everton 0 - 0 Liverpool

Pre-Match

We knew in advance that there’d be no Jordan Henderson, because he’ll be out for the next two weeks after getting injured against Newcastle. The event pushed the club to sign Arthur Melo on loan from Juventus. The new hire starts on the bench and starting in the midfield for the first Merseyside derby of the season is an interesting hodgepodge of Fabinho, Harvey Elliott, and Fabio Carvalho. Meanwhile, the defense includes Kostas Tsimikas in place of Andy Robertson and Joe Gomez partnering Virgil van Dijk.

First Half

It’s a hard, if predictable, start for the derby as neither both teams work their way into the match. Liverpool are dominating possession in the first minutes, with the Toffees content to stay back and hope for a break. Despite their dominance, the Reds have failed to score.

In fact, it was Everton that came closest at the start of the first half, first through a break by Maupay. Thankfully Onana scuffed his shot in the box, and Liverpool let off for that early mistake. More dangerously, Tom Davies hit the far post after another strong push from Everton.

Onana got shown a yellow card after a late challenge on Carvalho that had the new signing writhing on the ground in pain. The camera panned to Klopp, who wore the look of a man trying to figure which god he’s displeased. Carvalho jogged off the sting and continued to play.

On the other side, Liverpool, always eager to show up their blue counterparts, hit the post not once, but twice in one attack. First it was Darwin Núñez after beautifully controlling the ball with his chest and slicing it in. Then with the rebound, Luis Díaz managed to strike the other post.

Liverpool survived a late push by Everton in stoppage time to go into the break scoreless.

Second Half

Liverpool came into the second half looking to put pressure on their opponents, pushing forward with far more intent than they had in the first half. Roberto Firmino was subbed into the game at halftime in place of Carvalho, and he made his presence known immediately.

The next substitutions were for Andy Robertson and James Milner to come on for both wingbacks, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Tsimikas, mixing up the shape.

Firmino seemed absolutely determined to score in this game. His first shot forced a diving save by Jordan Pickford. The resulting corner was another chance for Firmino and another save by Pickford. A harrowing few minutes for Everton, but Liverpool couldn’t capitalize.

Seconds later, Everton sped across the pitch to counter. This time, it was Alisson’s turn to show his stuff by making himself too big for Maupay to score past, even at close range.

About 70 minutes in, it appeared that disaster struck for Liverpool in the form of former player Conor Coady. However, VAR is a Red, and the goal was ruled offside.

Elliott and Núñez are the next double sub on Klopp’s list, being replaced by Diogo Jota and the returning Joël Matip.

Van Dijk gets away with one, picking up a yellow for a bad foul against Onana when a red wouldn’t have been a stretch for referee Anthony Taylor.

Besides brief spells in the first and second halves when the teams went end-to-end and either hit the woodwork or forced Alisson and Pickford into saves, this has been your typically boring Saturday lunchtime scoreless draw by the 85th minute.

Final Thoughts

The woodwork denied the Reds several times, but it’s hard to complain when they benefited from a VAR decision and probably could have had van Dijk booted with a red card. In the end, it’s another early match that I’m annoyed I had to wake up for, but the Reds picked up a point.

While there are some positives, Jordan Henderson’s hamstring injury is still being assessed and only Diogo Jota is in contention to return in the derby.

A significant factor in Liverpool’s early season struggles is their ever-growing injury list. While Curtis Jones returned and was part of the squad that faced Newcastle on Wednesday, his spot in the infirmary was almost immediately occupied by Jordan Henderson after he suffered a hamstring injury during the match.

Given the long list of players out with injuries of varying severity, Jürgen Klopp provided a quick, yet comprehensive, update on the currently injured players in his press conference today ahead of tomorrow’s Merseyside Derby.

Klopp started with the good news; that Diogo Jota could potentially be in the squad to face Everton after a lengthy lay-off due to a pre-season injury.

“First time Diogo probably will be in,” said Klopp. “He trained yesterday with the team for the first time and he will train today. We have to make a decision about whether it makes sense to involve him already or not.

“But if we do, then it is the first time we’ve had five attackers. It feels like Christmas. If we will make changes, we will see.”

If Jota is named to the squad, it will mark the first time this season Klopp has had his full complement of attackers to choose from as Darwin Núñez will also be making his return from a red card suspension picked up against Crystal Palace.

While no other players are ready to rejoin the matchday squad, Thiago Alcântara is nearing a return which will come as a huge relief to all given he is likely the biggest miss of those who are sidelined. The midfield has been a problem area and his return can’t come soon enough. Ibrahima Konaté is likely the next to return after Thiago, and it sounds as though he could be back following the international break later this month.

“Thiago is the closest of all, I think the start of next week he will be in team training,” Klopp said. “Ibou is not too far away, in and around the international break he will be back in training.

After that, things are a little less positive. The severity of Henderson’s injury is still being assessed and the status of those with longer-term injuries remains unchanged.

“Hendo we don’t know. Nothing yet, still waiting for the result. He is definitely out, injured but don’t know the extent,” admitted Klopp.

“Naby (Keita) is a muscle injury, Ox (Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain) is a muscle injury and obviously they will be out for a while. Calvin Ramsay is still out but really getting closer, for him some of it to do with his back and something to do with age and growing. He hasn’t trained properly with us yet but he gets closer.”

Forced into more starts than he might have had otherwise, Firmino has impressed

Roberto Firmino might have expected to play a smaller role this season given the signing of Darwin Núñez and continued good form of Diogo Jota and Luis Díaz as options in the front three.

Injuries, however, have limited Jürgen Klopp’s options in both midfield and for the front three, and Firmino has started three in a row following Núñez’s suspension against Crystal Palace.

Supporters have noted a change in Firmino’s goal-involvements and general form since his peak for Liverpool — arguably in the period around 2018 — and his efforts in the early disappointing results this season felt like more of the same: Firmino dropping deep for the ball and not really impacting the scoresheet in any meaningful way.

In the last two starts, however, Firmino has been back to his resplendent best, scoring for fun and being all-grins. He’s scored two in three appearanced, brought his full tally for the club to 100 goals, and has added a few assists for good measure.

Speaking ahead of the Goodison Derby, Klopp addressed Firmino’s crucial impact this season:

[It] was, if you want, the other little benefit of the suspension: that Bobby just [played] how I believed he would have played.

Timing-wise it was perfect finding his real shape because he played obviously exceptionally. I said before, I liked a lot of the Man United game even though not a lot of people maybe agree with me on that, but then obviously Bournemouth and now again really important for us.

The way he plays, that’s why it is the Bobby we know.

You cannot score 100 goals if you have a lot of downs but if you have a lot of ups it’s maybe possible and that’s why he has reached this number, which is pretty special. Really happy for him. He got here in this room his shirt with 100 and the applause of the guys was nearly as loud as when we scored the 2-1 against Newcastle! Obviously everyone was really happy for him and yeah, it was good.

Firmino may or may not be handed another start against Everton this Saturday, but whether he’s given a rest or not we can all join the team in relishing the Brazilian performing at his very best in a red shirt.

EVERTON VS. LIVERPOOL

Premier League | Goodison Park

12:30PM BST/7:30AM EST

Everton come into this match needing a win, after fighting hard for a draw at Leeds last time out. Frank Lampard’s Toffees have managed a single win thus far this campaign, coming in the form of a 1-0 away win the early rounds of the EFL Cup against Fleetwood Town (currently in League One).

In the Premier League Everton have lost to Chelsea and Aston Villa and drawn with Nottingham Forest, Brentford, and Leeds — and most of these results flattered Everton.

Anthony Gordon has been a bright spot for Everton, scoring two thus far in their campaign (of five goals total scored), and he’s industrious in carving out space to take shots as well — notably, per Opta Everton are up to five shots on target per Premier League match vs. 3.6 per match last campaign. This might come as some surprise given the loss of talismanic striker Richarlison, though the small sample size might also be involved here.

They have new signings who could debut in the derby: Neal Maupay, Idrissa Gana Gueye, and James Garner could all feature for the Toffees. Of these two, Gueye is the most important, as Everton have lacked some control in the midfield for some time; formerly having played for the Toffees, Gueye should be able to slot in easily.

Amadou Onana, another new signing who has already bedded in at Everton, has showed a promising start to his career on Merseyside. Though having less of a direct impact on the scoresheet as the likes of Gordon, he did create and own goal and generally looks a danger in the build-up. He will be a key challenge for Liverpool should be be selected.

Abdoulaye Doucoure (hamstring), Dominic Calvert-Lewin (knee), Mason Holgate (knee), Yerry Mina (ankle), Ben Godfrey (fractured fibula) and Andros Townsend (ACL) are all unavailable.

Everton’s time-wasting antics were notable against Leeds, and the Reds can expect more of the same. Given the practice in coping with this against Newcastle, one hopes Liverpool will be able to handle the cynicism — and that Anthony Taylor looks to actively deal with it.

Predicted Liverpool Lineup (4-3-3)

It is a short turnaround from Wednesday to Saturday, though it’s one Liverpool and other teams in European competition are generally accustomed to. This should give Liverpool a slight advantage, though the injuries limit squad rotation.

Given that the likes of Darwin Núñez, Joël Matip, Curtis Jones, and Diogo Jota are likely returning/have returned from suspension and injury, Jürgen Klopp will have more senior options than he has done in the last few games. Given the option of five substitutions, however, it’s possible he stays with the line-up that’s most in-rhythm, bringing on fresher legs later on.

Jota has been training, but is not yet confirmed as part of the matchday squad. Should he be fit enough to be included, it puts Liverpool in a strong position:

“But if we do [have Jota],” Klopp told the press, “then it is the first time we’ve had five attackers. It feels like Christmas. If we will make changes, we will see.”

Núñez is a talking point, naturally. He was suspended because he lost his head after being needled against Crystal Palace, and should he play we can absolutely expect Everton to target him. As such, his return has the potential to be the strongest possible test to see whether he’s learned his lesson.

The club is awaiting scans on Jordan Henderson’s injury, though he’s expected to be missing for some time. New signing Arthur Melo is awaiting international clearance, and cannot be involved against Everton, and Thiago is not yet back in training — though should be ahead of Wednesday’s clash with Napoli. Ibrahima Konaté is expected back following the international break.

Everton will come hungry and likely to make this a proper derby. Manchester United have already proven this season that a worse team playing with a bit more desire can land a glove on Liverpool if the Reds are complacent. Klopp’s men will hope to prove that they’re back in the form that has seen them go unbeaten against Everton in their last 11 away games, and win three of the last five Merseyside derbies (only failing to win in the injury-laden, fanless 2020/21 season — D1 L1).

What the Managers Had to Say

Jurgen Klopp on Merseyside Derbies: “Tight games. Pretty much all, or most of the time, really tight, even the games we won. We won one [with a] Sadio Mane goal, 90th minute. It’s a big fight, we cannot ignore that but you have to play football as well. That’s the challenge. From this point of view I really think the Newcastle game was the perfect preparation because the game was super intense and showed us what we will have to expect even if somebody might not know it yet, then he knows it after Wednesday. Yeah, in the last few years I am involved in most of these draws and the games were still all different, just intense, a lot of fight. The more you can put in football as well in between these fighting moments the more likely you can get more from the game. But that’s obviously a real challenge.”

Frank Lampard: “I’ve got huge respect for Jurgen Klopp and what he’s done over the last number of years but of course, it’s a Merseyside Derby and I’m here to do my job and I’ll stand up and do my job.”

It looks like they are going on the pitch to play together, says the club no. 1 goalkeeper about Liverpool fans.

Liverpool play against Everton Football Club this weekend in the first Merseyside Derby of the 2022-23 season. And club no. 1 goalkeeper Alisson Becker believes that the atmosphere created by the fans makes the big game even more worth its weight.

“Big players always want to play these kind of games”, he said.

“The competition that the supporters have, they play together with you on the pitch. It looks like they are going on the pitch to play together.

“The atmosphere that they create for us is always amazing when we are playing at home or when we are playing away.”

He agrees that Everton will show up to win, despite not being in their best phase of success as a club. But Liverpool just need to focus on what they do best, and keep the frenzy of emotions aside.

“We have to keep our minds clear to do what we need to do on the pitch, to use our skills, to use our best performance to get the three points. And not get away with the emotions that you get from a derby, but be smart, playing a good game and trying to win’, he said.

And despite being a special occasion, the Derby is still just another step in Liverpool’s quest for trophies this season.

“In the Premier League every game is important for us”, he said.

“We know that every game has the same value at the end of the season. Every victory has three points, no matter if it’s a derby or not.”

The best case scenario would see him return around the same time as Thiago Alcantara and Naby Keïta.

Even with the expected arrival of Arthur Melo on loan from Juventus before the close of the transfer window, Liverpool face a difficult two week stretch with Jordan Henderson’s hamstring injury suffered against Newcastle on Wednesday expected to sideline the captain for at least two weeks.

That’s the story from club-connected journalist David Lynch, who says that Henderson has been ruled out at least until the match against Chelsea on the 18th of September. That would put him on a similar return timeline as Thiago Alcantara and Naby Keïta, both of whom are around two weeks away from a return.

With Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain not expected back any time soon and likely to be far off match fit whenever he does, it means that when it comes to first team options the Reds are down to Fabinho, Harvey Elliott, James Milner, Fabio Carvalho, and recently returned Curtis Jones for the derby.

If his deal goes through as expected, Arthur should be eligible to face Everton when they host the Reds in Saturday’s early kickoff, but with the player having seen limited minutes at Juventus it seems unlikely he would be ready to play a significant role and it could take some time for him to get up to speed.

The skipper was withdrawn on 71 minutes after being unable to continue.

Liverpool FC skipper Jordan Henderson was withdrawn at 71 minutes, making way for James Milner in last night’s game against Newcastle United.

Skipping to BT Sport after the game, manager Jürgen Klopp has confirmed that it was a hamstring issue that led to the substitution:

“We have another problem with Hendo. He left after feeling his hamstring, that is obviously not helpful.”

Klopp was asked if the injury would affect Liverpool’s reported search for a midfielder as transfer deadline day’s 11 pm cutoff looms:

“I don’t think so, but as long as there is time we should not close the door completely.”

“Obviously Hendo is injured, he got a hamstring [injury], which is absolutely not helpful. I don’t think so.”

He also seemed to emphasise the severity of the injury:

“[It was] that serious that he couldn’t carry on, so it was no tactical change.”
