Got karma?

They couldn’t have left it any later if they tried, but after an incredibly frustrating evening, Liverpool pulled out a well-deserved and absolutely delicious win in the eighth minute of stoppage time tonight, as Fabio Carvalho pounced on a bouncing ball in the Newcastle box and absolutely battered it into the back of the net via the crossbar.

Below, we dig into the narrative of the night and crown some winners and losers of the contest.

Winners

Karma: You couldn’t plausibly write a more deserved demise than the one Newcastle wrote for themselves here. After feigning their first injury in the second minute of play through goalkeeper Nick Pope, the Magpies continued their antics throughout, laying down with cramp on every possible occasion, happily obliged by a referee utterly disinterested in

When Pope sat down for a full two minutes in injury time — before continuing to play completely unaffected, of course — most people watching assumed he would get away with it, but Andre Marriner rightly tacked those minutes onto the five he had already added, and in the course of those extra two minutes, the Reds won the corner that would eventually lead to their winner.

Then the Newcastle bench got mad about the added time. Like, so mad. Scrumptious.

Yute szn: Once again, Harvey Elliott was one of, if not the best player on the pitch for the Reds, while his fellow Fulham prodigy Fabio Carvalho netted an orgasmic winner and his second Anfield goal in two matches. Celebrated by pretending to have a cramp, too, the scamp.

It’s probably not ideal that two teenagers are proving so important for a side that contains as many extremely experienced superstars as this Liverpool squad does, but then again, the point of adding players is that they make an impact, and the two 19-year olds are absolutely doing that.

It would not at all be surprising to see both players on the team sheet when the Reds take on Everton in the Merseyside derby on Saturday, but whether they start or come off the bench, fans are beginning to feel safe in placing expectations that they will affect what happens on the pitch.

Bobby Dazzler: He was good again tonight, the Brazilian, alternating between dropping deep, drifting wide, and attacking the box, and he scored yet another Anfield goal, making it three in as many days, after having gone nearly two years since his last one.

Darwin Núñez is still a serious threat to his position, but Roberti Firmino has certainly proved to his doubters over the past few days that he can remain an important contributor to the team as they continue to compete for as many trophies as possible.

Losers

Time Wasting: It has become increasingly obvious that the Let the Game Flow directive that took effect last season is mostly about letting has-beens pretend the sport hasn’t evolved in the past 60 years, rather than making it an actual meritocratic measure of talent or, you know, fun or pleasant to watch, which is why referees no longer consistently enforce rules regarding foul play whatsoever, but turn a blind eye to every single piece of game-disrupting time wasting strategy employed, whether it’s diving, feigning injury, interfering with free kicks, or goalkeepers spending full minutes keeping the ball out of play.

This has not been isolated to Liverpool games, of course, but has become a growing issue for anybody trying to watch the league, and especially in the opening weeks of this season.

The strategy did not win out today, thankfully, but one can only hope — certainly one can’t expect — that the league will take measures to stamp down on this sort of behaviour before it gets even further out of hand.

Clean sheets: One in five. Not great, that, and the tendency to concede the first shot on target — Liverpool have done exactly that in every game they’ve conceded a goal in this season — continues to put the team in losing positions to fight back from.

Be cool if we could halt this trend, is what I’m saying.

Credit to the Opposition

Absolutely not. Along with their constant late challenges, whining, injury feigning and general time wasting shenanigans, the blood money moguls of Tyneside played a dreadful game, failing to generate a single shot after scoring with their first one on target, one gifted to them by a combination of defensive errors.

The media has, predictably, given Eddie Howe a lot of credit for the job he’s done with the petrodollars provided by Saudi Arabia’s sports washing project, taking them from relegation quality to firmly mid-table, but they were cowardly and dreadful tonight, and left Anfield with exactly what they deserved; nothing.

What Happens Next

Merseyside derby on Saturday is it? Against probably the most frustrating and shameless time-wasters in the league? I’m sure that won’t be a maddening experience.

A look back at the key moments in Liverpool’s last second winner against against Newcastle United

Liverpool 1 - 1 Newcastle United

Liverpool: Firmino 61’, Carvalho 90+8’
Newcastle: Isak 38’,

Pre-Match

Jurgen Klopp has decided to go with the same exact Liverpool starting lineup that won 9-0 just a few days ago. The manager is bolstered by having the addition of Joel Matip and Curtis Jones as substitutes. Newcastle United are without key players in Allan Saint-Maximin and Bruno Guimaraes, but they did get some news today that Alexander Isak’s work permit was granted by the government, so he lines up at striker.

First Half

Newcastle won the toss pre-match and forced Liverpool to kickoff towards the Kop in the first half. Newcastle’s plan was apparent: do not let Liverpool get into a rhythm. Every restart was delayed or taken slowly, lot’s of players going down easily. Aided by a referee who wasn’t interested in hurrying them up. Liverpool’s biggest chance of the half came in the 34th minute when Alisson found Harvey Elliott on the break. After a bit of possession Roberto Firmino found Luis Diaz who was able to round the keeper but not put a shot on frame.

It’s more of the same from Liverpool, however, because Newcastle take the 1-0 lead in the 38th minute. Isak finds the back of the net against the run of play after a sloppy play from Jordan Henderson. Liverpool have conceded the first goal in eight of the last nine Premier League matches.

Second Half

The second half started with a lack of urgency from Liverpool. Things got dicey in the 55th minute when Liverpool had a penalty shout following a corner kick, but Newcastle marched up the field on a counter attack. Thankfully Isak was offside.

Liverpool’s first attempt on target came in the 60th minute when Salah was in behind and laid it off to Elliott. Their equalizer came in the 61st minute after Salah found Roberto Firmino on a layoff in the box. That goal seems to have awoken the crowd and the team

A triple change in the 71st minute brought James Milner, Kostas Tsmikas, and Fabio Carvalho into the game for Alexander-Arnold, Henderson, and Andy Robertson.

All hope felt lost when Liverpool were awarded a corner kick in the 98th minute but Carvalho clearly had other ideas! The ball bounced around the box and he fired it home. Newcastle wasted just enough time for Liverpool to find a winner.

Final Thoughts

Liverpool beat a team 9-0 on Saturday after scoring in the first three minutes. Any of those goals would’ve made this one a bit less interesting. There were worries throughout of course, but three points is on the board.

Victory over Bournemouth on the weekend was a step in the right direction for a Liverpool side facing a difficult start to the season.

Liverpool’s start to the 2022-23 Premier League season hasn’t gone quite to plan, with pre-season expectations for a title challenge met with dropped points in each of their first three games and an injury crisis in midfield.

In their fourth game they finally got their first—and much needed—victory with a 9-0 thumping of relegation-favourites Bournemouth. Now, against Newcastle, they need to build on that victory as they look to get their season on track.

“Tonight a good outcome is needed once again,” manager Jürgen Klopp said in his pre-match notes. “We do not get extra points for scoring nine goals or a head-start in our next fixture. We begin again at nil-nil.

And if there’s one thing that’s certain after a big win it is that your next opponent will be looking for any signs that you might be enjoying your last game a bit too much. This is not a new challenge and I would rather have it than not, but we should be aware of it.”

Complacency can creep in after a big win, but given the circumstances around the start of the season it’s hard to see this group being all that complacent thanks to just one—not when they have only five points from four games.

While that’s a disappointing return, though, the reality is that just as they won’t sweep aside every opponent 9-0, this Liverpool side isn’t as bad as the results in those first three games that saw them end up with two draws and a loss.

“We should also recognise that just as everything was not broken before we played Bournemouth, everything is not perfect after we have played them,” Klopp added. “We have played four fixtures at the start of a season that everyone knows will be different.

“We would like to have more points on the board than we have and we are disappointed that we do not, but to be a work-in-progress at this stage is pretty normal so now it is about building on what we have done.”

Slowly but surely, Liverpool’s beleaguered players are nearing their returns.

Liverpool are once again set to play a match without several players available. However, some hope has appeared after Jürgen Klopp’s latest injury update. There’s no miracle switch that healed everyone on the team at once, but starting after Wednesday’s game against Newcastle, players should start trickling back into contention.

“Diogo [Jota] can train from Thursday,” Klopp said. “Thiago slightly later. Calvin [Ramsay] is closer, Kelleher is walking outside for GK training, so yeah light at the end of the tunnel.”

In addition to that positive news, Joël Matip and Curtis Jones were pictured training with the team on Monday.

The other solution for dealing with several key player injuries is to acquire new players. In that area, time is ticking in the summer transfer window. The window will be ending on Thursday, September 1st. With only about two days left, and with no player links made from credible Liverpool sources, that possibility is shrinking by the minute.

They are off to a good start with players like Jota and Thiago returning from their injuries, as long as they can keep the healthy players healthy after the upcoming international break.

The Reds are looking to sign a midfielder before the close of the transfer window but won’t sign a player simply to sign a player.

Ahead of Saturday’s 9-0 demolition of Bournemouth, Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp revealed that the club had reconsidered its approach to the transfer market and would seek to bring in a midfield reinforcement before the close of the window.

Today, while Klopp said that a big victory doesn’t change that, at the end of the day the focus remains on signing the right player and not simply a player, and admitted that as the days pass it becomes harder to get a deal done—which in turn makes a deal less likely.

“The closer we get to the last minute the more unlikely it gets, that’s how it is,” Klopp said. “What can I say? We are not out, but it’s difficult. For sure there are a few players out there which would be the right ones but they have different issues.

“Some of them are contracts, clubs don’t want to sell, all these kind of things. That’s how it is and then we cannot force it. We’ll see. There is still time. But when it’s then over and who we signed or not signed, then I’m really happy we can stop thinking about it.”

Liverpool under Jürgen Klopp have made it a point to resist being reactive. They make their lists, pick their targets, and try get deals done early based on their perceived needs and not because of short-term issues or a rival making a big signing.

Recent injuries have exacerbated the midfield situation, where the club know they have long-term needs and tried to sign Aurélien Tchouaméni and Jude Bellingham this summer only to see the former head to Madrid while Dortmund won’t sell the latter.

Having thought they had enough in midfield to undertake a successful campaign, they decided to stick with what they had and wait for next year. Injuries changed that thinking but won’t change their determination to only do the right deal.

“If somebody expects just to do always what others are doing, or what some people wish, it’s not possible,” Klopp added. “Never happened before, will not happen in the future. This club arrived here in this situation with the way we deal with situations.

“When I say I don’t make the decisions about how much we spend it’s the truth but I never did and we are still here and have won a couple of things. Yes, bringing in the right players is important but if we can’t do that now then we can’t do it.”

Liverpool’s next opponents are expected to be without Allan Saint-Maximin, Bruno Guimarães, and others on Wednesday.

Liverpool’s injury struggles early in the 2022-23 season have been well documented, with Jürgen Klopp’s side hit particularly hard in midfield and the manager forced to reconsider his stance and confirm that the club will move to make a midfield signing.

They aren’t the only ones who’ve started the new season with injury issues, though, and their next opponents, Newcastle United, appear particularly hard hit this week with five first team players including Allan Saint-Maximin likely to miss the Liverpool game.

Along with Saint-Maximin, who’s currently ruled out due to a thigh strain that forced him off the pitch after his late equaliser against Wolves over the weekend, Newcastle are likely to be without Bruno Guimarães, Jonjo Shelvey, Callum Wilson, and Emil Krafth.

New striker signing Alexander Isak also has yet to receive international clearance to complete his move to join the Magpies from Real Sociedad in La Liga and Wednesday could come too soon for the Swedish international to make his debut for Newcastle.
