Liverpool were the better side by the numbers in both legs but a close aggregate scoreline means Inter Milan are left with regrets.

Inter Milan beat Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield on Tuesday night, a strong result for the Serie A giants but not enough to overturn a two-goal first leg deficit. They were also by most measures outplayed on the night.

The Reds had nearly two-thirds of the possession, completed a third more passes, and created nearly two expected goals compared to Inter, with the visitors creating less than half an expected goal on the night.

Still, they played Liverpool closer than many have this season, and with an aggregate 2-1 final scoreline it’s understandable the Italian club and its fans might today find themselves dreaming of a different outcome.

“We have got to this stage for the first time in 11 years and ended up perhaps playing the strongest team in Europe and we were their equals,” manager Simon Inzaghi reflected following Tuesday night’s result.

“We put in two tremendous performances, and in the San Siro we probably played even better than this evening [so] I’m more bitter about what happened in the San Siro rather than tonight. I regret that result.”

He’s not entirely wrong—in the first leg, Liverpool created slightly fewer expected goals and Inter slight more. On balance, though, the Reds were still significantly ahead of their opponents when it came to chance creation.

Taken together, if anything it’s Inter who are today flattered by the overall scoreline. Things were close enough, though, that on another night with another bounce or two going their way they could have upset the Reds.

“Sometimes it needs just a single episode to change the course of a game,” Inzaghi added, lamenting his side’s missed opportunities and and a second yellow for Alexis Sanchez that helped Liverpool see out the tie.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is looking forward to two cup quarter finals and a Premier League title race.

Based on their control of the game, the possession they held, and the chances created, Liverpool were the better side in both the first and second legs of their Round of 16 Champions League tie against Italian giants Inter Milan.

They won the first game, lost the second, and advanced by a 2-1 aggregate that slightly flattered Inter given the Reds created around three goals worth of expected chances while conceding three-quarters expected against.

While the fact the second leg will go down as a loss is a touch disappointing, on the whole it remained a solid performance and Liverpool are now deservedly into the quarter finals, and that’s all that really matters.

“That’s all that mattered to us,” was Trent Alexander-Arnold’s post-match reaction to Tuesday’s match. “We are disappointed obviously not to get the win but all that mattered to us was getting through to the next round.

“It’s important for the club, it’s important for us as a team and the fans, so that’s all that mattered. We’ve been able to get our hands on the first trophy of the season and are in a strong position in all the other three competitions.”

On Tuesday, Bayern Munich also advanced in the Champions League, while Man City are set to play today with a commanding 5-0 lead on Sporting Lisbon while PSG hold a narrow 1-0 edge on Real Madrid.

Next week, Man United will play their second leg against Atletico Madrid, Ajax will face Benfica, and Juventues will take on Villarreall with all of those ties currently level. Chelsea will face Lille with a two goal edge.

Liverpool, then, have a pair of Premier League games against Brighton and Arsenal that they will feel they need to win to keep pace with leaders City before they take on Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup quarter finals.

“We have two exciting quarter-finals to look forward to, a cup final every weekend in the league,” Alexander-Arnold added. “It’s exciting times, to be in these games, and hopefully if everyone stays fit we’ll be able to see it through.”

The Reds advance to the quarter-finals with a less emphatic scoreline than they deserved,

Despite the final scoreline reading 0-1, and the aggregate score having the two teams separated by only a single goal, Liverpool are through to the quarter finals of the Champions League, and deservedly so. The Reds hit the post no less than three times tonight, Virgil van Dijk missed a free header from six yards, and Luis Díaz was thwarted from similar distance in injury time, and across the two legs, the Reds accumulated four times as much expected goal value as their opponents.

Inter did not play badly — in fact, one could, and many will, argue they did incredibly well, all things considered — but it must be recognised that the Italians’ press resistance and competitiveness in midfield came at the cost of their own offensive threat, and the fourth most dangerous attacking side in Europe’s top five leagues was reduced to pot shots from range in both games, managing only 13 shots worth a total of 0.7 expected goals, all the while failing to prevent the Reds from generating clear cut chances of their own.

Winners

Quarter Kings: For the fourth time in five years, the Reds will advance to the quarter-finals of the Champions League, continuing to establish themselves as one of Europe’s foremost footballing sides. Last season ended at this level as an injury-ravaged Liverpool failed to overcome a veteran Real Madrid side, but not a single team on the continent will want to face the Reds in the next round, while the Merseysiders will fancy their chances against anyone.

These Reds are mustard. Enjoy them while you can.

The Woodwork: Hell of a game. Kept Inter in it when their players couldn’t. Should consider signing ‘em up.

Losers

Mad Mateu: Typically one of this writer’s favourite referees because he’s never afraid to make a big call — and to be fair to the man, he did get one very large call absolutely spot on tonight — Antonio Mateu Lahoz was dreadful at Anfield, intermittently allowing play to run or handing out cards with little sense of consistency in either direction.

There wasn’t much sense of favouritism, but Lahoz failed to keep things under control, and while he made the right decision in sending Alexis Sanchez off for a second bookable offense, the ref could perhaps also be blamed for allowing things to get to that point.

The Streak: Despite being the better side in both legs and deservedly advancing to the next round, Liverpool lost their first game of 2022 tonight, and their first home game in a full year. After a run of 12 wins and three draws to start the year, Jürgen Klopp will have wanted to keep the unbeaten streak going, ideally to the end of the season, but as the man himself said after the match: “We try to lose the right games. If we could lose a game, then it would be tonight.”

Undoubtedly, the Reds will be looking to get back on the right track at the first opportunity.

What Happens Next

Of course, in this jam packed fixture list, the first opportunity is not far away, and Liverpool will travel south to face familiar banana peel Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday lunch time, before taking on Arsenal at the Emirates on Wednesday evening. Another pair of opportunities to put pressure on Manchester City, as the Sky Blues play their own Champions League tie in midweek.

We react to Liverpool’s Champions League defeat to Inter Milan and give you a chance to vote for Man of the Match.

Liverpool 0 - 1 Inter

Inter: Martinez 62’

Pre-Match

The big pre-match news is that Thiago is back fit and ready for a big start on the biggest of stages. Joel Matip and Diogo Jota also make their returns to the starting XI, replacing Konaté and Diaz, respectively. Curtis Jones also gets a surprise start in the center of the park.

Liverpool come into tonight with a 2-goal cushion, and the Anfield advantage. Of course, it’ll still be a long 90 minutes (or possibly 120 minutes), and the Reds will have to be on their toes not to give Inter too much encouragement (i.e. by conceding an early first goal).

First Half

Inter start the match on the front foot, although it’s nothing too dangerous from a Liverpool perspective. When Liverpool have possession, they seem a little bit more cautious than usual, patiently moving the Inter defense from side to side instead of going straight for the killer ball.

The ref is letting a lot go, with the apparent singular exception of when Fabhinho is involved. The Brazilian midfielder has been called for two incredibly soft fouls, and it seems like an equally soft booking is more or less imminent.

Close! Joel Matip nearly opens the scoring with a header from a free kick. Unfortunately he can only manage to clang the effort off the crossbar.

In the closing minutes of the half it’s Inter’s chance to create something from a dangerous position for a free kick. Inter test Alisson, but the goalkeeper is quick to react and push it to safety.

Trent gets a good look at direct free kick just before the half, but pushes the effort just wide of goal. It’s a decent half from Liverpool, and a delightfully uneventful one at that. Although the hosts haven’t created much, they’ve also held Inter to an xG of just 0.10. Another half like that—or better—and the Reds will take their rightful place in the quarterfinals.

Second Half

Five minutes into an already lively second half and it’s Mohamed Salah’s turn to hit the post after a mad scramble inside the box. Mo has been quiet so far today, but you’d expect him to slot that effort.

Goal. Suddenly a very uninteresting match became interesting, courtesy of a wonderstrike from Lautaro Martinez. Well. Game on, then.

RED! Alexis Sanchez, who already could’ve seen a straight red earlier for a nasty challenge on Thiago, got his second yellow and you have to say it was deserved after yet another out of control, studs-up challenge. The red comes just one minute after the opening goal.

Klopp responds to the new situation—down a goal and up a man—by bringing on captain Jordan Henderson and Naby Keita for Thiago and Curtis Jones.

Salah hits the post again! It was a fantastic run and pass from Sadio to pick out Mo, but it wasn’t to be. Please, Liverpool, I’m begging you to finish one of these chances!

With five minutes remaining in regular time, Klopp brings on Luis Diaz for Jota. And wouldn’t you know it, he also wanted to get in on this “missing a sitter” action!

Final Thoughts and Man of the Match

The ref mercifully blows his whistle after a frustrating night for the Reds, albeit one that sees them through to the quaterfinals. In the cold light of day this will be a match that Liverpool will be proud of. It was a mature, disciplined performance, with a scoreline that flattered the visitors (with the help of a top-notch strike from distance). It wasn’t a classic European Night at Anfield, but Liverpool are the deserved victors of the tie, even if they lost tonight’s battle.

Inter manager Simone Inzaghi knows coming back from a 2-0 deficit at Anfield will be hard but he believes his side can manage just that.

Liverpool, up 2-0 after the first leg and at home for the second, are heavy favourites to advance past Inter Milan in their Champions League Round of 16 tie.

Their opponents, though, haven’t given up hope and manager Simone Inzaghi says his side will look to the positives in their first leg performance as they look to spark a comeback against one of Europe’s top sides.

“Nothing is impossible, in football as in life,” Inzaghi said. “It will be very difficult not because of the performance but because of the result from the first leg.

“Now we’ll go to Anfield to play a big match knowing we are facing one of the strongest teams in Europe. We won’t be playing at home in front of our fans and it will be difficult but we are ready.”

The removal of the away goals rule means that a two goal victory would be needed for Inter to force extra time while they would need to three in order to advance to the quarter finals of the tournament.

After a first leg that saw Inter try to stifle the Reds, that could in turn mean chances for Liverpool, too, but needing at least two goals means Inter likely have little choice but to try to open up the match.

“It will be a difficult game but we have great motivation,” he added, “It is important, I would say essential, to score a goal in the first half but we know that it will be very difficult.”

Last time Liverpool hosted a Champions League Round of 16 second leg in front of a crowd at Anfield, two things happened: 1) Liverpool lost in extra time, and 2) the world as we knew it ended, courtesy of the COVID-19 pandemic. It would be good if neither of those things happened tonight (and don’t make us choose which we’d actually prefer).

Liverpool have a 2-0 advantage heading into the second leg of their Champions League tie and must avoid complacency.

Liverpool have the clear advantage heading into the second leg of their Round of 16 Champions League tie against Inter Milan, with the Reds holding a 2-0 lead after the first leg and welcoming the Italians to Anfield for the second.

It’s a situation that means Inter would need to win by two goals to force extra time and three in order to win the tie, and Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson says a key factor for the Reds will be their ability to avoid complacency.

“We might be 2-0 up after the first leg, but it is still only half-time and Inter will feel they are very much in the tie,” he noted. “Inter pushed us every step of the way [last] game. They were aggressive, played on the front foot.

“The victory was especially pleasing because of that, but it should not obscure the fact that it was a proper contest and we are expecting more of the same tonight. So our challenge is simple—we have to ensure our standards don’t slip.”

A positive result tonight would secure a place in the quarter-finals for Liverpool, who after winning the League Cup for the ninth time remain in the running in the FA Cup, Premier League, and Champions League this season.

Elsewhere, Man City and Chelsea look safe bets to advance while the round’s other five ties—Juventus vs. Villarreal, Ajax vs. Benfica, Man United vs. Alteico Madrid, Real Madrid vs. PSG, and Bayern vs. Salzburg—appear more balanced.

“We have to remember how difficult the first game was and expect an even tougher one,” Henderson added. “They will be giving everything to turn things around. The history and reputation of their club demands nothing else.”

The pundit disagrees with Jürgen Klopp’s statement that 2-0 is the most overturned result in the history of football as Liverpool take that lead into their Champions League second leg with Inter Milan.

Pretty much everyone in the footy/soccer world has heard the age old adage that 2-0 “is the most dangerous lead”. Weather said in jest or sincerity, there is some logic to the statement. With a one goal lead, the team in the winning position knows a goal of pure happenstance or luck can knot the match up, making it easier to stay sharp. A two goal lead, especially one where the opponents haven’t scored, can lead to overconfidence and a loss of focus that allows the opposing side to winnow their way back into the match.

As Liverpool take a 2-0 lead into the second leg of their round of 16 Champions League tie with Inter Milan, Jürgen Klopp has stated that his team do indeed hold the most dangerous lead. He spoke to that fact in he pre-match presser.

The danger everybody knows about. It’s 2-0, the lead I think which got turned over most often in the history of football. Because if you enter half-time 2-0 up and you have a team who thinks we are halfway through then you are already on the wrong path, so we are long enough [in the competition] and we know that. It’s a much better result than I would have expected, to be honest, before we played there. The game didn’t look like we will win it 2-0 for most of the time. It was a really tough tie and a really difficult game to play. We knew before they had real quality. After that, we knew they had real quality. Now they will show up here and they won the last game 5-0. Yes, against the team bottom of the table but still really impressive. [Lautaro] Martinez scored, [Edin] Dzeko scored, [Robin] Gosens is back. We saw the game and we’re really happy [Nicolo] Barella is not playing because he set up I think three or four! That’s a really experienced team and they don’t come here as tourists, I know that they want to chase the game. That’s what we want to do because we are not a team who defends results, or whatever, or tries to get through somehow. We want to attack the game again and let’s see what we can get from it.

BBC pundit Gary Lineker has a gripe with Klopp’s statement that 2-0 is the most overturned lead in history. He took to twitter to state “I suspect statistics will not support this”.

I suspect statistics will not support this. https://t.co/kEJbiz7OR3
— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) March 7, 2022

Andrew Beasley, who is always on the spot with a statistic also weighed in with a tabulation of all 2-0 leads in the Champions League in recent history. His analysis showed that only Manchester United had been able to overcome the “most dangerous lead”, advancing past PSG 3-3 on away goals in 2019.

Of course, we’re really splitting hairs here. Whether or not Klopp actually believes the sentiment, he is very publicly stating that his team need to stay wary of danger and stay sharp against the Serie A side. Still, it is nice to see the statistics bear out that Liverpool are rightfully in a very strong position to advance. especially knowing that Liverpool are more often than not going to score at least a goal or two at home.
