A late goal provides a tiny sliver of drama in an otherwise comfortable win.

Despite a stupid late goal from nothing, Liverpool were on cruise control for most of the match tonight, and courtesy of a Takumi Minamino brace, advanced relatively comfortably to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup with a customary win over Norwich City. We do a quick dive into the winners and losers and make Jürgen Klopp cross by mentioning the Thing that shall not be named.

Winners

The Cup King:

Critical in the Reds’ run to the League Cup title, Takumi Minamino played zero minutes at Wembley this weekend. A clever gambit, in the end, as the Japanese attacker continued his red hot domestic cup form with rested legs tonight, scoring both of Liverpool’s goals, including a sizzling half-volley winner that clattered in off Tim Krul’s near post five minutes from half-time.

With seven goals in eight appearances, Minamino has now scored a goal every 84 minutes in the Carabao and FA Cup, while his two league goals puts him on nine total, fourth in Liverpool’s scoring charts on the season. After struggling to get regular minutes and spending six months on loan at Southampton, the 27-year old has done a terrific job of making the most of his playing time this year, with tonight no outlier.

Where Taki struggled with defenders closing him down aggressively last year, he now holds them off, shielding the ball better and rarely losing possession. He still lacks the raw physicality to consistently go past Premier League caliber defenders on his own, but his runs off the ball are far more purposeful now and his finishing more confident.

He may not be higher than sixth choice in Liverpool’s embarrassingly stacked attack, but regardless of what happens in the next three months, he will have played a crucial role in the Reds collecting at least one trophy, and one wouldn’t bet against him continuing to do so in the run-in.

The Child: Coming off a five-month absence due to a dislocated ankle, Harvey Elliott had not looked quite as electric on the pitch as he did at the start of the season, when his combination of energy, intelligence and composure. Certainly, the stunning goal against Cardiff was a reminder of just how talented the 18-year old is, but Inter outbattled him and he failed to make much of an impact in the Carabao Cup final — despite expertly dispatching his penalty in the shootout.

Tonight, though, Marvellous Harv was back, drifting into any available space to receive the ball, then swiftly turning and playing an aggressive pass into a dangerous space. When Liverpool turned the screw and should’ve put the game well out of reach to open the second half, Elliott was at the heart of everything, and it was exhilarating to watch.

A dribble, a tackle, an interception, a through ball, a shot and three shot assists to go with a conservative estimate of half a dozen progressive passes in just 45 minutes of football is tremendous output for any central midfielder, and Liverpool’s little diamond showed us once again that he’s a force to be reckoned with, not only in the future, but the right here and now.

The Quad: Jürgen Klopp won’t like me saying this, but... the quadruple is still on, lads. After collecting their first trophy of the season at the weekend, the Reds boss was driven to exasperation by journalists asking him about winning another three, when he very clearly would prefer to focus only on the task most immediately at hand.

Us fans, though, can dream. And will. Tonight’s win takes Liverpool within three games of an FA Cup trophy, the first of Klopp’s tenure, and the second of four potential collectibles this season, and we’ll keep beating this drum until it either happens or is no longer a possibility. These Reds are absolutely phenomenal, mustard, the dog’s bollocks, and four titles, while prohibitively unlikely, remains in play still.

Enjoy it.

Losers

The Sheet: Despite utterly dominating proceedings and keeping Norwich at arms reach throughout, Liverpool gave up a very silly goal with 15 minutes to go, and every defensive player on the squad will be livid about how it came about, with Alisson getting beaten from range, in no small part due to Joe Gomez blocking his view of the shot without actually getting in the path of the ball.

Given defenders’ love of clean sheets, this one is going to sting a little despite the win, hopefully enough that it gets everybody extra fired up about protecting their goal when West ham come to visit on Saturday.

What Happens Next

That’s right, it’s a short rest once again, as the Hammers, one of only two teams to beat the Reds this season — albeit extremely shadily assisted by a hapless officiating crew — come to town on Saturday night. David Moyes’ men have struggled to maintain their hot start to the season, but remain in fifth place and will look to reaffirm their attempt at breaking in the Champions League spots, while Liverpool will be out for both revenge and the three points needed to keep up with the league leaders.

Jürgen Klopp’s Red are fresh of winning the League Cup against Chelsea. Now they need to beat Norwich if they want to go deeper in the FA Cup.

Liverpool fans are expecting a heavily rotated side against Norwich in the FA Cup. They might even get a fully rotated on after Jürgen Klopp’s players put in 120 minutes of running against Chelsea in the League Cup final.

Whoever ends up starting for the Reds, though, the Liverpool manager is targeting a win and he’ll be looking for a performance that proves his side are hungry to add to their silverware haul this season after winning the League Cup

“I don’t know what team we will select, but I know we approach the game with the only motivation being to win and get through,” Klopp said in his pre-match notes. “Norwich will have the same objective. So it’s a proper game.

“Under the lights at Anfield. I’m sure there will still be a feel-good factor for the supporters because of Sunday. That’s cool, [but] for us we cannot allow any ‘follow over’ other than a feeling of positivity and greed for more.”

Klopp isn’t the only one who’s spoken of wanting more following Sunday night’s penalty shootout victory at Wembley, with a number of players reacting to the win by saying that with one trophy down there are now three more they want.

Facing a Norwich that appears already relegated with little to realistically play for in the league gives them a chance to back up that bold talk, but they’ll need to be fully engaged in the task at hand and to avoid the risk of an upset.

“I want us, as a team, to be completely in tonight and nothing else,” he added. “The trophy we have won won’t matter come kick-off. The trophies we could still win are irrelevant. The only thing that can be achieved tonight is progression, so let’s do it.

“Let’s have a right go, tonight, in this game. Let’s make the performance and the atmosphere special. Really special. We can if we are minded to.”

Liverpool won the League Cup on Sunday. Now focus shifts to the three other competitions they could win this season.

On Sunday, Liverpool won the League Cup, defeating Chelsea in the wildest nil-nil you’re likely to ever see, a game capped off by a set of penalties that saw the Reds put eleven straight past Kepa Arrizabalaga to edge London’s Blues by an 11-10 margin in the shootout.

In a perfect world for Liverpool and their fans, though, Sunday’s triumph and trophy lift at Wembley will only be a beginning with three more months to play in the 2021-22 season and three more trophies still up for grabs for captain Jordan Henderson and his teammates.

“We don’t want to stop there,” said Henderson as he and his teammates turn their attention back towards the FA Cup, Premier League, and Champions League. “We have another game in another competition tonight and having won one trophy we have to keep kicking on.

“Experience tells me it is going to be tough as we are up against another Premier League team and we’re coming off a massive high, so we have to be careful on both fronts. Norwich gave us a really difficult game a couple of weeks ago so we know what we’re up against.”

On paper, even a wholly changed Liverpool side—something highly likely after having played 120 minutes against Chelsea just three days ago—should be favourites over the last-place side in the Premier League, but Norwich and their fans will be hoping this is their turn.

This will be the fourth time the Reds face off against them this season, and the cumulative scoreline across their past three matches sees the Reds out in front by a 9-1 margin. If a heavily rotated Liverpool aren’t fully ready, this could be a moment for Canary revenge.

“We have to be prepared,” Henderson added. “It is up to ourselves to keep on setting our own standards and there is no reason whatsoever for them to drop now.”

Jürgen Klopp confirmed that hero Caoimhin Kelleher needs a break.

Jürgen Klopp confirmed in his pre-match press conference that number one goalkeeper Alisson Becker will return between the sticks for Liverpool’s FA Cup fifth round match against Norwich City. Some wondered if Caoimhin Kelleher would keep the spot since he seems to be Klopp’s preference in the domestic cup competitions.

However, after Kelleher’s heroics on Sunday in the Carabao Cup final win against Chelsea, Klopp decided that the Irish keeper needed a break.

“He had 120 minutes,” he explained. “You asked me last week if he would play before, that he gets some rhythm and I said, ‘No, he’s used to the situation that he just comes on and has to play.’ He’s not used to 120 minutes and being the hero. There’s no need to stress the situation now. No, he will not start tomorrow.”

With that fresh new trophy feeling still pumping through all of our blood, in some ways, it will feel like Alisson is the reserve keeper this time around.

The Reds face Norwich on Wednesday in the FA Cup, followed by West Ham in the league on Saturday. That means if all goes well, Liverpool could potentially win three games in three different competitions and one trophy over the span of a week.

The Reds look to continue their hunt for a second trophy this season.

Liverpool vs Norwich

| Wednesday, March 2nd |
FA Cup | Anfield
8:15PM BST / 3:15PM EST

With the first trophy of the year collected, Liverpool have a chance to take a big step towards a second one on Wednesday, as they take on Premier League bottom dwellers Norwich at Anfield.

The Canaries are having a rough time of it this season, with the sacking of long-time manager Daniel Farke not leading to marked improvements in results, and the Norfolk outfit remain stapled to the bottom of the table on 17 points, with many of the teams in front of them having one or more games in hand.

Liverpool have not been a kind opponent to Norwich in recent years either, and having already dispatched of them on their way to the Carabao Cup final, the Reds can make it four wins over the Canaries this season, as many as Dean Smith’s men have managed in the Premier League all year.

Tomorrow’s visitors have fitness struggles to deal with as well, and will likely miss former Red Ozan Kabak and Adam Idah, while Brandon Williams and Max Aarons looks set to be match-day decisions.

Projected Liverpool Lineup (4-3-3)

Kelleher; Gomez, Matip, Konaté, Tsimikas; Henderson, Jones, Elliott; Minamino, Origi, Salah

With Jürgen Klopp sticking with Caoimhin Kelleher for the entirety of the team’s successful League Cup run, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Irishman between the sticks again tomorrow, as he has featured in both FA Cup fixtures this season as well.

At the back, though, expect wholesale changes, and starting berths for Ibrahima Konaté, Kostas Tsimikas and Joe Gomez are plausible, with the latter sliding into Trent Alexander Arnold’s right fullback spot. With Nat Phillips going to Bournemouth in January, one of Virgil van Dijk and Joël Matip will likely be retained in the centre of defence.

Thiago will miss at least a week with the hamstring issue he picked up during Sunday’s pre-match warm-up, but otherwise Klopp has a full midfield contingent to pick from, and fitness will be the determining factor. Fabinho played 120 minutes at the weekend and should be rested, so Jordan Henderson anchoring behind two of Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain feels probable.

Up top, Roberto Firmino remains unavailable with a hamstring injury, and Diogo Jota’s swollen ankle definitely appeared to impede him somewhat on Sunday, so considering all the minutes played recently among Luis Díaz, Sadio Mané and Mohamed Salah, it is unlikely more than one of the three will feature from kick-off, with Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino in line for start.

Liverpool are in fine form and determined that Sunday’s League Cup victory won’t be the last piece of silverware this season.

Harvey Elliott wasn’t supposed to even be on the bench for the Reds in Sunday’s League Cup final against Chelsea, with Liverpool’s impressive depth and a dearth of injuries meaning there would be no room for the talented youngster.

Then, Thiago Alcantara picked up a minor hamstring strain. Naby Keïta moved from the bench to the starting lineup. And Elliott joined the bench before coming on as a second half substitute—and converting his penalty kick to help win the game.

“It all happened so quick, to be honest,” he reflected after helping the Reds to their ninth League Cup. “But that’s the thing with football, you never know what’s going to come around the corner. You always need to be well prepared.

“Even if emotions were running low because you weren’t in the squad for whatever reason, like I said, you always need to be prepared and if you’re called upon, you need to have the right mentality, the right focus, and just focus on the moment.”

The question now is what comes next. And while the obvious and immediate answer may be Norwich City in the League Cup on Wednesday, there’s a bigger picture next that not just Liverpool fans but also the players are beginning to talk about.

Liverpool have won their first trophy of the season, but they’re well positioned in three other competitions, and there’s a growing confidence and belief in them having a chance to do something historic and make Sunday’s trophy the first of four.

“It’s always a big accomplishment and it’s all credit to everyone who’s played a part to get the team to the final,” Elliott added. “Once we had that feeling, we all said to each other that we want more of it. We were all saying, ‘Three more to go.’

“I’m sure we’ll put up a massive fight to get to those finals and situations in the Premier League. At the end of the day, it’s down to us. We need to work hard, we need to fight for these wins, and we need to fight as a team.”

The Liverpool midfielder is expected to be back in action in about a week according to the manager.

Thiago Alcântara was meant to start against Chelsea on Sunday in the League Cup final. Instead, a hamstring injury during warm-ups sidelined the player, who could be seen distraught on the bench ahead of kickoff.

That led many Liverpool fans to fear the worst, but while no injury is a good injury, today manager Jürgen Klopp delivered a very positive update, saying he now expects Thiago to be out of action for no more than a week.

“It was a very emotional moment,” Klopp said of Thiago’s injury. “We were all surprised. I watched the whole warming up and didn’t see anything, then we came in and the physios tell me he feels something in the hamstring.

“Then we had to make the decision he could not start. I didn’t like that he didn’t feel good, but the desire to play I liked. He’s fine again but not fit. Like always, you don’t know exactly. Weekend not sure, maybe Milan, after definitely.”

After a mid-week FA Cup tie against Norwich, Liverpool face West Ham on Saturday before playing the second leg of their Champions League tie against Inter Milan on Tuesday and then Brighton on Saturday, March 12th.
