After Liverpool was unable to defend an early 2-0 lead, we take a closer look at what it all means for the Reds.

Liverpool started well yet again, scoring two goals in the first 25 minutes. Rather than running away with the game like they did last week, Liverpool struggled to stamp their mark on the game as it progressed, and Brighton made the Reds pay with some great ball movement and smart pressing. While a draw is probably fair on the balance of things, it will surely sting to drop points at home in a tight title race.

Winners

Quick Starts
Liverpool have made a habit of finding the back of the net recently. Today was no different as Mohamed Salah found Jordan Henderson for a goal in just the fourth minute. Alex Oxlad-Chamberlain delivered a sumptuous cross for Sadio Mané to head home 20 minutes later to give Liverpool a 2-0 lead. This was the 4th game in a row (featuring the senior team) that Liverpool have scored within the first 10 minutes of the match.

Sadio Mané
The Senegalese striker showcased his all-around game today. He was dangerous on the dribble, and sprung several counters down the left. He finished off a goal, and unfortunately had a second chalked off by VAR after his press of the keeper led to the ball caroming off of his arm and into the net. Sadio also had a great defensive header, sprinting to get to the back post and flick the ball away ahead of an unmarked Brighton player.

Losers

Midfield
Midfielders were instrumental in both of Liverpool’s goals, with Jordan Henderson scoring the first and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain assisting the second. Despite that, the midfield had a rough day overall. Naby Keita went down injured in the first half, and Ox struggled to have a consistent impact on the game despite the assist. He and Curtis Jones lost the ball in bad spots too many times, and the overall struggled to cover the spaces they needed to cover in transition. They were also overeager to get involved in the attack at times, leaving too big of a gap behind them when the ball was turned over. This lead to several of the 5v4 and 4v3 breaks in Brighton’s favor. Let’s hope Fabinho and Thiago are back soon, their presence against teams that move the ball quickly and press well is greatly missed.

Roberto Firmino
The Brazilian put on a masterclass against Manchester United last weekend, but he struggled against Brighton today. Bobby struggled with his touch today, and lost the ball on several occasions. He also missed a great opportunity early in the game after being slipped in 1v1 by Mohamed Salah. Brighton also were smart with how they handled Firmino, leaving Yves Bissouma to stick with him, letting the center backs hold their shape behind them.

Ibrahima Konaté
Look, Ibou wasn’t terrible today, he just wasn’t great and showed his inexperience at times. While supremely gifted from a technical and physical perspective, the young center back showed a tendency to chase the play in front of him at times, leaving gaps in behind him that Brighton were happy to exploit.

Credit To The Opposition

Unlike Liverpool’s opponents last week, Brighton showed that they were a well drilled side, and didn’t lose their heads after going down early. They made some tweaks and began to gain control of the game. Brighton showed their trademark quick out-to-in ball movement in transition to carve open Liverpool’s defense quite a few times. They also did a very nice job of setting traps for Liverpool on the press, forcing Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in particular into difficult positions deep in their own half.

What Happens Next

Liverpool will take on Atletico Madrid at Anfield on Wednesday in the start of the Champions League group stage reverse fixtures. A win in this game will guarantee Liverpool a spot in the knock out stages. The Reds will then go to London to take on West Ham next Sunday in their next league match.

We react to Liverpool’s Premier League draw against Brighton and give you a chance to vote for Man of the Match.

Pre-Match

Konate kept his place alongside Virgil van Dijk after his performance at Old Trafford. Meanwhile, Curtis Jones took the place of the injured James Milner in the midfield.

First Half

The game began with Brighton pushing hard, clearly looking to steal a quick advantage. It ended with Solly March getting free and with way too much space, forcing Alisson into a great save in the first two minutes.

After that, Liverpool woke up and remembered who they were. One minute later, the Reds went streaming down the other side of the pitch. Mohamed Salah picked out Jordan Henderson, who rifles it past Robert Sanchez and into the top corner.

Despite Liverpool looking dominant in the first 15 minutes, Brighton still managed to find some good chances. The second came by way of Yves Bissouma, who got through Liverpool’s midfield with distressing ease and fired in a shot that is very awkward for Alisson. The keeper got a fingertip on it and forced a corner, maintaining Liverpool’s slim lead.

18 minutes in, Liverpool’s midfield injury problems got worse when Naby Keita was forced off the pitch after clutching his thigh. Klopp sent in Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as the early sub.

To his credit, Oxlade-Chamberlain proved his mettle only minutes later, lofting in a beautiful ball straight to Sadio Mané’s head. Mané made it two with characteristic ease.

He nearly got a brace in exuberant fashion. He and Salah put goalkeeper Sanchez under huge pressure on the ball. He tried getting it away from his goal, and Mané snuck in from the side and bustled the ball into the net from point blank range. Unfortunately for Mané, his arm got the last touch on it, and the goal is called back.

Credit to Enock Mwepu in the 38th minute, who got off an absolute thunderbolt of a strike from outside of the 18 yard box to pull one back for Brighton.

Second Half

The second half started out hot, with both Brighton and Liverpool getting early chances at goal. Salah scored a lovely goal, but again, VAR pulled it back, this time for offside.

As the match wore on, Liverpool lost control of the midfield, allowing Brighton to get back into the game. The creativity of Keita was missed in the middle of the pitch, and when Trossard equalized in the 65th minute off of an assist from former Liverpool man Adam Lallana, it seemed inevitable.

The rest of the match was a disappointment, as Liverpool looked to nab a last minute victory and keep all three points at Anfield.

Final Thoughts and Man of the Match

Midfield depletion might be taking its toll as Liverpool once again drop points from a winning position against Brighton.

With the form Liverpool is in, every match seems to be a chance for a new record — and Saturday is no different

Brighton look to take points off Liverpool at home whilst coming into Saturday’s match with a good record of their own: against Liverpool, Brighton have won and drawn matches in their last two games against the Reds — after losing their first six meetings against the Reds.

Of course, last season’s team was struggling with serious injury problems throughout, and is thus perhaps not the most useful benchmark for judging patterns of form.

While Brighton are a skilled and well-coached side, Liverpool hope to continue their good form in the 2021/22 season. The Reds are the only unbeaten side remaining in Europe’s top leagues, and should they win or draw against the Seagulls the Reds will enter their third run of 20+ games unbeaten under manager Jürgen Klopp.

The Reds went 21 games between May and December 2018 and 44 games between January 2019 and February 2020 without defeat, and look to maintain the start to this season’s title challenge. For their part, Brighton look to lodge back-to-back victories versus Liverpool for the first time, having won 1-0 last time out.

Should Liverpool win or draw on Saturday, Klopp will become the third manager to have three separate 20+ game unbeaten runs, after Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United (six) and Arsène Wenger at Arsenal (four). The potential to join such names underscores the level of dominance Klopp’s side has produced, even if the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea are high level rivals in this campaign.

Brighton come to Anfield without Dan Burn, but will have the tricky fullback Tariq Lamptey available; Lamptey has returned to the team after a lengthy injury absence, and will cause problems down Brighton’s right side. Given his pace and directness, Andy Robertson will need to be alive to the threat, and it would be brilliant if the Liverpool right back had no lapses in organization when it comes to the offside line this weekend.

Yves Bissouma, who is also central to how Brighton play, is returning from his own lengthy absence with a knee problem, and will look to cause Liverpool problems.

While Brighton are coming into Saturday’s match on the back of three draws and two losses — going out of the League Cup on penalties to Leicester City most recently — the Seagulls have looked more promising than their results suggest.

Brighton will look to cause Liverpool problems, and the Reds will need to be well-organized and alert to take all three points on Saturday — after all, not every Premier League opponent will be as easy to break down as Manchester United was last time out.

That said, Naby Keïta has recovered from what looked to be a horror tackle, and Thiago Alcantara, who has been missing for some time, is also back in training. James Milner is still on the injured list.

While this match might come a bit too soon for Thiago, another start for Keïta seems likely, as manager Jürgen Klopp continues to have some options in the middle of the park.

The front three give Klopp positive problems, in that no one would complain about any of the first choice front four being included in the starting lineup Saturday. Similarly, while the fullbacks and Alisson likely write themselves into the team sheet, the centerback pairing will be a positive surprise.

Joël Matip’s somewhat surprising start midweek means it’s possible Ibra Konaté has found himself as part of the first choice pairing in the league, but Joe Gomez and Matip himself will want the start. In aggressive contrast to last season, it’s wonderful to have so many great choices in the center of defense; while Virgil Van Dijk is guaranteed a start, no one would argue regardless of the name next to him on the team sheet.

And he looks forward to seeing Adam Lallana at Anfield this weekend.

Andy Robertson was heard revving up the squad during the Manchester United game, asking them to be ruthless, and keep going. And he enjoyed the result very much.

“It was enjoyable and Sunday night was a good one, slept easier and everything like that and not many regrets lying in bed about the game, which is always good”, he said.

But they didn’t allow their euphoria to carry on indefinitely.

“Straight after the game we were very much, ‘Let our fans enjoy this one, let them have the bragging rights and everything that goes along with it.’ But for us, we were fully focused on the next game. That’s what’s worked best for us in the last five, six years under this manager and that’s what will continue to work well for us”, he added.

His mid-game encouragement to “keep going” had a clear goal: getting a clean sheet.

“Obviously when you get to 3-0, 4-0, in fact the clean sheet then becomes unbelievably important. Alisson would have never forgiven us if we’d never kept one, and same [with] the defence.

The lads up top had their fun and got their goals but we needed their help for us to be satisfied with a clean sheet, which we managed to do. But it’s also, ‘Don’t stop doing what you’re so good at, don’t stop going forward.”

And he’s looking forward to facing Adam Lallan at Anfield when Liverpool play Brighton in the Premier League tomorrow.

“We know how good Adam Lallana is as a player and we know how good he can handle the ball. He’s one of their main men and a close friend of all of us. I hope he gets a good reception at Anfield but hopefully we’ve done our job first and hopefully we’ve won the game when he does get that good reception because he certainly enjoyed his win at Anfield last season, and rightly so.”

Two key midfielders returned to training ahead of a league clash with Brighton.

In a double dose of good news, Naby Keita and Thiago took part in training as both continue working their way back from injury.

Dwindling numbers in midfield had been the one aspect of Liverpool’s 23-match unbeaten run that had given Reds supporters pause, with the start of the week seeing Jurgen Klopp with three fit first team midfielders to call.

Already missing Harvey Elliot to long-term injury, his side had also lost Thiago in September’s 3-0 win over Crystal Palace, Fabinho to a minor knee complaint in a thrilling win over Atletico Madrid last week, and both Keita and James Milner during the historic 5-0 victory over Manchester United at the weekend.

“Brighton will be close, but probably not. He’s almost back, which is really important for us, of course,” Pep Lijnders said of Thiago’s return on Tuesday.

A rapid return to training is especially good news for Keita, as the club had feared the worst when he had to be stretchered off following a nasty tackle from Paul Pogba.

While Milner has been ruled out until after the international break, Fabinho is not expected to miss any more time, although the Brazilian did not take part in training on Thursday.

With both Thiago and Fabinho likely fit enough to make the bench for Saturday’s league matchup with Brighton, Klopp will hopefully not be limited to only being able to field Jordan Henderson, Curtis Jones—only just returning from injury himself—and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as the only options in the center of the park.

Defender Adam Webster says the Seagulls will take confidence from their victory at Anfield last season.

Liverpool are in a good run of form, having won their last four games in all competitions, sitting just a point off first in the Premier League, and having not lost any of their 14 games played to date as we near the end of the third month of the 2021-22 season.

Upcoming opponents Brighton, though, say that they are up for the challenge of facing off against Jürgen Klopp’s high-flying Reds on Saturday in league action—and they’ll be looking to last season for a little inspiration ahead of the kickoff.

“We won there 1-0 last season and that was amazing,” noted defender Adam Webster. “This time there will be a full house and they will have a few players back. They are flying, so we are going to have to be on the top of our game, but we’ll relish the challenge.”

After struggling to get the results their play deserved and finishing 16th last season, Brighton’s results in 2021-22 have so far been much more positive as the Seagulls sat fifth—ahead of Man United, Arsenal, and Leicester City.

However, it’s worth noting that while in 2020-21 they finished 16th despite having the fifth best expected points numbers in the Premier League, this season they sit fifth while having just the 13th best expected points numbers.

It’s perhaps fair to suggest, then, that despite their better position in the table, this Brighton side are in fact not playing nearly as well as the one that finished last season flirting with the relegation places while beating the Reds 1-0 when they visited Anfield.

Still, it’s not a match the Reds can take lightly if they’re to continue their stellar form and keep pace with title rivals Manchester City and Chelsea, who are set to take on Crystal Palace and Newcastle United respectively this weekend.
