Trent Alexander-Arnold was happy with how the Reds performed on Sunday but thinks the margin of victory should have been larger.

Last season, Leeds United and Marcelo Bielsa became the darlings of English football, playing an exciting uptempo brand of football and finishing ninth in their first year back in the Premier League.

A return of fans this season—some of whom chanted “you’ll never walk again” and “always the victim” after Harvey Elliott suffered serious injury on Sunday—has served as a reminder owhy Leeds had a negative reputation amongst the last time they were in the top flight.

Still, with those fans now back and with the style of football Bielsa’s side play, Leeds make for one of the more challenging away days for any opponent. And the Reds rose to that challenge over the weekend.

“It’s always difficult to come here,” said Liverpool fullback Trent Alexander-Arnold following his side’s 3-0 victory. “It’s difficult to find space but once you can, it kind of opens up and you’re able to create chances—and I think that’s what we did.

“We could have been a lot more clinical, put the game to bed earlier and really probably scored a lot more goals. But you never turn your nose up at a 3-0 win at Elland Road—a clean sheet, three goals and three points.”

Another goal or two for the Reds wouldn’t have been entirely underserved on the run of play, with Liverpool holding 56% of the possession, outshooting hosts Leeds 30-9 (and 9-4 on target), and with the visitors completing 30% more passes.

In the end, though, even if they could have been a little more clinical it’s difficult to find much to fault in that kind of a dominant performance away to one of the league’s toughest mid-table opponents.

“They are unorthodox and they stick to what they know,” Alexander-Arnold added. “Even when they’re down to 10 men, they’re still playing the same way. It’s not sitting behind the ball and defending, it’s front-footed, chasing around , and wanting to be aggressive.”

The full extent of the damage is not yet known, but it appears the young star at least avoided a serious ankle break against Leeds United.

Liverpool’s dominant 3-0 victory over Leeds on Sunday was marred by an ugly incident. Leeds United’s Pascal Struijk chased down Harvey Elliott from behind, grabbed the young midfielder’s his shoulder to hold him back, and went in on him with a scissor tackle that left the young Red needing to be stretchered off the pitch.

While some pundits sought to cast the incident as unavoidable and simply unlucky, it’s the sort of tackle outlawed in most places in football. Even if there was no intent to injure, it’s the sort of tackle outlawed most places in football precisely because of the high risk of injury to the player being tackled. It’s the kind of tackle that ends careers.

Fortunately, the early signs are at least that Elliott’s injury isn’t as bad as initially feared. The dislocated ankle was able to be put back into place on the pitch, suggesting no serious fracture and at least bringing with it the chance of less ligament damage and a quicker return to action—though quicker in this case is relative.

“I’m of course absolutely devastated with what happened yesterday at Leeds but have been totally overwhelmed by the love and support shown to me by the entire football world,” Elliott said on Instagram. “Thank you so much to everyone who has reached out or sent messages to me and my family, it means so much to us.

“I am now fully focused on my recovery and will give everything in my rehabilitation to be back out there as soon as I can. I know I have an incredible support network behind me. To all of the Liverpool fans, your support means the world to me. I’m one of you and I can’t wait to be back faster, fitter and stronger to help the team in the future.”

The player turned pundit expects Sunday’s game to be a goal fest, but Liverpool will win, in his view.

Former Liverpool and England star Michael Owen predicts a 2-1 win for Liverpool this Sunday in their Premier League clash against Leeds United. Speaking to BetVictor, he offered his thoughts on the Jurgen Klopp vs Marcelo Bielsa match-up, as reported by the Mirror.

“Last season’s great entertainers, Leeds, welcome Liverpool to Elland Road in what looks like a cracking contest on paper.

Bielsa’s men will no doubt be full of energy, meaning Liverpool may have to be patient early on. It’s great to watch Leeds, and when their gameplan comes off, it must be applauded. That said, they could play into Liverpool’s hands here. Come at the Reds and they have all the tools to take you apart. This is one game where I can definitely see goals, and I think it’ll be the Reds that take the points back to Merseyside.”

The game will be Liverpool’s fourth of this campaign, and the Reds will be looking to make up for points dropped against Chelsea in their previous fixture. The famous Elland Road atmosphere will have to be countered by Liverpool’s traveling fan support, a fact acknowledged by Jurgen Klopp in an interview with the club website.

“We are used to a very special atmosphere obviously when we play at home. In the Premier League there are obviously some grounds with a really good atmosphere – so, if Leeds is another one, good for them and we have to deal with it”, he said.

Liverpool return from the international break to take on Leeds United at Elland Road.

LEEDS UNITED VS. LIVERPOOL

| Sunday, September 12th |
Premier League | Elland Road
4:30PM GMT/11:30AM EST

Welcome back from the September international break — objectively the worst of all the international breaks. Liverpool will look to erase the disappointment of their draw against a 10-man Chelsea with a victory against Leeds United away at Elland Road.

The big news is that, after some confusion and doubt, the Brazilian players on the both Liverpool and Leeds teams will be allowed to play in this match. That means Alisson will be guaranteed inside the goal and Fabinho may get the start in the midfield. Unfortunately, ban or not, Roberto Firmino is out with a hamstring injury. For Leeds, that returns Raphinha to contention for Marcelo Bielsa.

Last season, Mohamed Salah scored a hat trick against Leeds United at Anfield. On Sunday, he’ll only need one goal to get him to lucky 100 in the Premier League, an incredible achievement considering the length of time he’s played in England.

The Whites sit in 15th place in the table after the first three matches. They’ve managed two draws and a loss, which isn’t the worst way to start to their second season back in the Premier League, despite the heavy opening day loss to Manchester United. After ending last season in a strong 9th place, Leeds will be pushing to earn their first victory and return to winning ways.

Predicted Liverpool Lineup (4-3-3)

Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Henderson, Fabinho, Thiago; Salah, Jota, Mané

As mentioned, the big discussion in the days leading up to the match was about whether or not the Brazilian players would be allowed to take part. That decision was made in the clubs’ favors, and so Fabinho and Alisson will be eligible.

In addition to Firmino, Takumi Minamino and James Milner are also out injured. Van Dijk has been cleared after an injury scare with the Netherlands that probably provoked a collective PTSD response from Liverpool fans around the globe.

For Leeds United, only Robin Koch will be on the sidelines for this match. As with Alisson and Fabinho, Raphinha has been cleared to participate in attack for Bielsa.

Marcelo Bielsa: “The affection the fans transmit in the Premier League at Elland Road, you can see for yourself. Of course, makes you emotional and increases the desire to win the game.”

The Reds return from the break to take on Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds team.

It’s hard to forget the opening day match Liverpool played against Leeds last season when the club returned to the top flight for the first time since 2004. The first half ended 3-2 in favor of Liverpool. At full time, Liverpool had come through with a 4-3 victory, thanks to a Mohamed Salah hat trick, plus one extra from Virgil van Dijk.

The return fixture with less enthralling, ending in a 1-1 draw.

Now the Reds return from the September international break to travel back to Elland Road. The Brazilians will be allowed to play for both sides, except for Roberto Firmino, who is out with a hamstring injury.

Jurgen Klopp expects another exciting match against Marcelo Bielsa’s men.

“We had – with some players now – a week’s time to prepare for it and some only came back training on Thursday so we have two sessions where we can probably prepare for it,” Klopp told the official site.

“The game itself is already tricky. We saw in the last two games against them, my first time playing against Leeds, it was really exciting. They have a specific way of playing the game with strict man-marking idea defending, very flexible and very brave, very dynamic in possession. Against Leeds (it’s) high intense, they go for it. They are good in possession, I think, so far, second or third in possession.

“It’s a really good team and we have to be at our best to get something there. They don’t have the points yet they want to have but they for sure think they have a good chance against us. But they didn’t play us yet this season. We are hopefully good, as good as we can, and then we are difficult to play. When we are difficult to play, we have a chance to win – and that’s what we try.”

Both teams have good reason to fight for the victory on Sunday, aside from the obvious three points. Liverpool will be looking to make up for their disappointing draw against Chelsea before the break, while Leeds are still hunting for their first win of the season.

It’s nice that they’ll have an extra day to rest before the match. Hopefully that will be enough to rest the tired bodies of players who spent the last two weeks fighting for World Cup qualifying spots with their countries.

Brazil, Mexico, Chile, and Paraguay have backed down and the Premier League’s non-travelling internationals will all play on the weekend.

On Wednesday, following a complaint from the Brazilian FA, FIFA informed Premier League clubs that had refused to release players for international duty with the South American nation due to United Kingdom coronavirus travel restrictions that those players would not be available for selection for five days following the end of the international break.

On Friday, Brazil—as well as Mexico, Chile, and Paraguay—backed down, withdrawing their complaints. It means that for Liverpool, the Brazilian trio of Alisson Becker, Fabinho, and Roberto Firmino will all be eligible for Sunday’s match against Leeds, though with Firmino carrying a minor knock the striker is expected not to be in the matchday squad.

It also means that Liverpool opponents Leeds will be able to select forward Raphinha. In addition, Brazilians Ederson and Gabriel Jesus will be eligible for Manchester City, Thiago Silva for Chelsea, and Fred for Manchester United along with Newcastle’s Miguel Almiron (Paraguay), Wolves’ Raúl Jimenez (Mexico), and Watford’s Francisco Sierralta (Chile).

There were rumours following Brazil’s decision to lodge their complaint that FIFA was not entirely happy about the situation but felt obligated to uphold their rules as written and bar the non-released players from playing. Ahead of the break, the Premier League and European Club Association had supported the clubs’ decision not to release players.

That led to a potential looming showdown, with the possibility the clubs and league would ignore FIFA’s ruling, play the ineligible players, and take football’s governing body to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Now, any showdown is avoided—and further to that, the clubs have only agreed to release players in October if travel restrictions change.

In related news, the Argentine players from the Premier League who traveled during the international break despite not being released by their clubs—Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez and Emi Buendia, and Tottenham’s Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso—will spend the next ten days in isolation and not be able to train with their teammates or play.

While Alisson and Fabinho would be important misses for Liverpool, Klopp’s frustrations are shared around the league

At present it is unclear whether players whose clubs refused to release them for international duty in red-listed countries will be available for selection this weekend.

For Liverpool, this is Roberto Firmino, Fabinho, and Alisson — though the former will not be available regardless due to a hamstring injury he picked up last match.

Other Premier League clubs are facing similar issues, however: Ederson and Gabriel Jesus (both Brazil) at Manchester City; Thiago Silva (Brazil) for Chelsea; Raphinha (Brazil) for this weekend’s opponents, Leeds; and Fred (Brazil) for Manchester United.

Irritatingly, though Richarlison was not released to Brazil, the Brazilian FA are fine with him playing at the weekend as a show of appreciation for the club releasing him for the Olympics.

Should they remain, the bans will affect Manchester United and Chelsea’s Tuesday Champions League fixtures as well.

While the Brazilian players are the ones in the news, players from other countries have also been affected since South American qualifiers were played in Red List Countries (which would have required a 10-day quarantine upon return): Newcastle’s Miguel Almiron (Paraguay); Raúl Jimenez at Wolves (Mexico); and Watford’s Francisco Sierralta (Chile) complete the list of players whose availability is up in the air.

While the South American FAs have requested playing bans, Premier League officials have reportedly been looking for a more favorable solution given the COVID fears — but at present, no solution has been found.

Pep Guardiola, who would be missing his first choice keeper (Ederson) through this potential ban and lacks his second choice keeper (Zack Steffen) due to a positive COVID test has said today that he plans to play Ederson.

“We are going to wait until tomorrow - right now I’m thinking they’ll play,” he said, though emphasizes that the clubs await news.

Of course, the clubs who did allow their players to travel to the qualifiers are also without their players since they are in quarantine — and also thus unable to even train with their squads.

Giovani Lo Celso, Davinson Sanchez and Cristian Romero will miss Tottenham’s match against Crystal Palace and Thursday’s Europa Conference League game with Rennes. (Tottenham might fine Romero and Lo Celso for going without permission, but that’s a whole other story.) Aston Villa are without key pair Emiliano Martinez and Emiliano Buendia.

Manchester United boss Olé Gunnar Solskjaer was clear in his disparagement of the handling of these international games.

“I think it’s a ‘lose, lose, lose’ situation for everyone - national teams, players, clubs. It’s been a farce,” he said.

“For me, I’m disappointed with the whole thing. Common sense might not be so common any more.”

Whether players went or remained with their clubs, should the bans be enforced many teams will be without key players this weekend, and thus international football is affecting the domestic competitions in a rather unprecedented way.
