We praise the players in spite of the exit, and look ahead to the rest of the season.

As was the case last spring, Liverpool were unable to overcome a Spanish deficit at Anfield, failing to convert their chances after an uninspired first leg, and are prematurely eliminated from the Champions League.

Below, we find some positives in it all nonetheless, and try to figure out what could be done to make this season tolerable.

Winners

Trent: Gallons of ink have been spent opining about the mind state of Trent Alexander-Arnold over the past weeks. We have little interest in re-litigating all that, but suffice to say, the 22-year old was phenomenal tonight.

Largely eliminating the threat of Vinícius, who made only a single successful touch in the Liverpool box all night, Trent put in two tackles and three interceptions, while generating a full 40 percent of the Reds’ chances, creating six shot assists over the 90 minutes.

His role has changed a lot as this chaotic season has progressed, drifting into the centre far more often than was the case in the past, and teams spend a lot more time limiting his ability to influence the game in the final third, but if we’ve learned anything about the young scouser, it is that he’s ready for any challenge that comes his way, and we would be shocked if he didn’t maneuver his way around this one too.

Bolton Baresi: The nickname jokingly awarded to Nat Phillips by Jamie Carragher a few weeks back may have been tongue in cheek — few would describe the 23-year old as ‘cultured’ in his playing style — and the circumstances that have led to him even having the chance to put on these performances are anything but favourable, Phillips has been much better than anybody had any right to expect.

He’s not fast enough to play in Liverpool’s demanding defensive system, but the old-school foot-forward style of defending has proven good enough to not be a disaster despite those shortcomings, and tonight, he was immense.

Winning the usual seven aerial duels, Phillips also delivered four interceptions and two clearances, as well as stepping up his playmaking duties, striding forward and delivering aggressive passes through the lines, looking for Liverpool attackers in the final third.

He certainly won’t be a starter whenever things return to normal, and the expectation remains that the Reds will be upgrading at centre-back in the summer, but Big Nat may have done enough to earn himself a spot as fourth or fifth choice at Anfield next year, or, at the very least, a starting position at a Premier League club whose list of demands for a centre-back lines up better with his attributes.

Giving It A Go: For as frustrating as the missed chances and end result is, Jürgen Klopp’s men largely did what they were supposed to do on the night, creating more than enough chances to get a goal or two, the kind of goal that would sow seeds of doubt in the minds of their visitors, and simply could not capitalise.

It fell apart in the end, as fatigue forced substitutes and rhythm suffered as a result, but the intensity and application was there for all to see, and if nothing else, hopefully the players take away from the game that performances like that will more often than not result in them leaving the stadium with a win.

Losers

Merseyside Shooting Boots: Despite their injury troubles this season having been focused on their backline, Liverpool’s measurable underperformance has come at the other end of the pitch, particularly at Anfield.

In the four months that have passed since the Reds’ beat Tottenham at Anfield, they have scored a brain-shattering 6 goals from 16.6 expected goals in all competitions. It is an outrageous cold streak that seems entirely unlikely to continue, but it persisted again tonight, as Liverpool’s front men were unable to convert the number of chances, both big and small, that fell their way, either placing shots straight at Thibaut Courtois or blazing them over the bar.

There is no satisfactory explanation for this underperformance, and it still seems impossible that it can sustain itself for much longer, but if the Reds want to have a chance at European redemption next year, they must make sure to break the trend immediately.

What Happens Next

There’s only one thing left to play for in this cursed season now, and that’s a top four Premier League spot and qualification for next year’s Champions League. The Reds are in a difficult but not impossible position, sitting three points off fourth placed West Ham, with Chelsea sandwiched in between, and as the two sides will face off against each other two weeks from now, a perfect run of seven wins is likely to get the job done.

That run needs to start on Monday, as Liverpool travel to neutral fan favourites Leeds in what will undoubtedly be a high-energy back-and-forth affair.

After the Reds are eliminated from the Champions League on aggregate, we want you to rate your man of the match.

Despite creating enough chances to get the job done, Liverpool — in what has become a familiar refrain this season — failed to convert, and without that famous Anfield atmosphere, were unable to overturn the two-goal deficit from the first leg.

Now tell us how you saw it! With our favoured polling tool out of service, we’re instead giving you a choice between a few of the players we thought looked best today for the Reds, so make your choice below and vote for who you think should be the man of the match—or take to the comments to let us know that we got it wrong by leaving the real man of the match off the list entirely.

As always, anyone visiting on Apple or Google AMP who wish to vote and can’t see the poll can make it visible by navigating to the front page of The Liverpool Offside and re-entering the story.

The Real Madrid manager says his side isn’t coming to Anfield looking to nurse their 3-1 advantage.

Real Madrid and Zinedine Zidane may have a 3-1 advantage heading into the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie with Liverpool, but Los Blancos won’t kick off the evening at Anfield looking to simply hold on to the lead that they already have.

Instead, the Madrid manager says his side will be looking to add to their first leg advantage and win in England just as they did last week in Spain, a result that would ensure they’re the ones facing Chelsea in the semi finals of Europe’s premier cup competition.

“We’re not going to try and manage the game,” Zidane said ahead of the match. “We’ve come here to win and that’s what we’ll try to do. We’ve spoken about this as a team, we made a huge effort in the first leg and against Barcelona but we’re used to it.’

When the draw was made, Madrid looked to be struggling somewhat, but in recent weeks they have rediscovered their form and are now a point off first in La Liga and a positive result tonight away from making the final four in the Champions League.

Injury concerns, though, remain a major talking point for Madrid just as they do for opponents Liverpool, and whichever side does advance in Europe this evening will be able to say that they did so while overcoming the absence of a number of key players.

“we are missing a lot of players right now,” he added. “I’d love to have them all available, but we’re going to put in our best performance with the players we have. This team always comes together in the toughest of times and shows the character we have.”

In many ways, our current pandemic-stricken nightmare began when a team from Madrid showed up to Anfield and flipped the script. Today, we have a chance to reverse fate, certainly of our football team, but possibly for the rest of the world? I’m not saying that Liverpool results control the world. But I’m not not saying that either.

The most straight-forward way for the Reds to go through is with a 2-0 win. A 3-1 win would mean extra time, where we were reminded last year that away goals still count, and possibly penalties. It’s a narrow path to victory, but not an insurmountable one. Then again, if we concede early, it could be a long night, especially without 50,000 Scouse lunatics screaming at the top of their lungs.

But if we go through, a semifinal date with Chelsea—ahead of a final in Istanbul—awaits. And if that doesn’t send chills down your spine, I suggest you give up on football altogether.

Liverpool need to beat Madrid by two goals with a clean sheet or three if Madrid score in order to advance.

Liverpool have struggled to find anything like their best form through much of the 2020-21 season, but on Wednesday evening when Real Madrid come to Anfield for the second leg of their Champions League quarter final tie, the Reds will need to do just that.

To overturn a 3-1 deficit and advance to face Chelsea in the semis, Liverpool will need to look a little more like the side that won it all in Europe in 2019 and captured the Premier League title in 2020. It will be difficult, but Jürgen Klopp believes it’s possible.

“Football is football, we all know that, and there are a lot of things possible,” Klopp said. “I understand that we speak now about the result, but for me much more important is the performance. We have to play like ourselves, we have to play as good as we can.

“It’s about winning football games and that’s the target for tomorrow. If that will end up in a comeback, I have no idea but I never had before. It’s just we have to start believing in that again. If that happens, if we can see that it’s possible, then we have a chance.”

If this Liverpool side can rediscover their best and their belief, then certainly they have a chance, and while it will still be difficult the math will be fairly simple. They’re down 3-1 with an away goal, so a 2-0 victory levels it and give them the away goal tie breaker.

If Madrid get an away goal of their own, though, it means Liverpool would need to win tonight by three to take the tie outright, while a 3-1 Liverpool victory matching Madrid’s first leg margin after 90 minutes would see the game go to extra time and perhaps penalties.

“If they would go 1-0 up or whatever in a normal game we would have to score two to win it or score one to get a point,” the Liverpool manager added about the situation his side now faces. “The point wouldn’t help [tonight], 2-1 wouldn’t help. So that’s the situation.

“We have to be 100% on our absolutely top level to have a chance to make it. But that’s possible, that we are at our 100%, so we should try it.”

He’s got your back, Trent.

Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold’s dual ascension into starting fullbacks for Liverpool FC coincided with lots of success. Since then, we’ve seen them engage in season-long assist competitions, and even host their own web series together. Naturally, Robbo has something to say about the scrutiny Trent has faced as of late. At Liverpool’s pre-match press conference for the return leg at Anfield against Real Madrid, he spoke fondly of his fellow fullback’s abilities:

For me, it’s a sign of a world-class player. When world-class players don’t perform to the level they have done then people criticise them more. People criticise them more than your normal player, for me, I know it’s hard for Trent, but he should take it as some form of compliment.

The fact that so much noise has been made about him. But, for me, the teammates and somebody who is close to him and cares about him, it’s just about trying to keep his confidence at the highest level because when it’s like that then nobody touches him.

I thought on Saturday, he put on a very good performance. I thought against Arsenal, he was excellent. Of course, he struggled against Madrid, but we all did. Not one of us played well. But more gets said about Trent’s performances than anybody else.”

From being labelled a defensive liability by the media and fans after Madrid to scoring a last-minute winner on the weekend... it really was a wild week for Trent, which perfectly encapsulates the up and downs of being a footballer. Liverpool FC are backed into a corner. They’ll have to chase the game with urgency, and maybe being on the front foot will suit Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson just fine.

Game on, lads.

Despite a stunning injury-time strike for the ages from Mehdi Taremi, Chelsea managed to hang on and move past Porto into the UEFA Champions League semi-finals. Real Madrid or Liverpool FC await. In his post-game presser, Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel dropped this nugget of info:

In general I like not to play against teams from your same league in the Champions League as it gives more of a feeling of a European competition but that is the only thing. The game is far from over but I will watch it for sure.

Everything is possible. Liverpool are very strong at home so we take what we get. It is a good situation for us.

Indeed, as we know all too well from previous encounters with Chelsea during the Rafa years, or 2018’s quarter finals against Manchester City... European ties with familiar foes just take on a different feel. Sometimes things get extra cagey, or both teams throw caution to the wind. Either way, Liverpool need another herculean effort to win this two-legged tie against Madrid. If they succeed, Chelsea awaits.

Andy Robertson says the Reds aren’t out of the Champions League just yet—but they do need a near-perfect performance.

With supporters in the stands, nobody would put it past Liverpool to overcome a 3-1 deficit to Real Madrid heading into the second leg of their Champions League quarter final tie at Anfield on Wednesday evening.

Without supporters, it looks far more difficult. It would be foolish to count the Reds out already, though, and left back Andy Robertson insists they still have a chance—but it will need a nearly perfect performance.

“We’re still in the competition,” was Robertson’s take on things. “Maybe not many give us hope but we believe we can put in a better performance than last week and that’s the only way that gives us a fighting chance.

“We need to be better at everything tomorrow, we need to make it uncomfortable for them. If we can do that and if we can take the chances, then let’s see where it takes us. It needs to be a close to perfect game.”

Liverpool’s struggles without fans have been reflected by their poor home record, and on Saturday they recorded their first victory at Anfield since December 16th—the last game played with some fans in attendance.

Now, they need to beat Madrid by at least two if they can shut out the La Liga side—and to beat them by three if Los Blancos score on the road. It will take nothing less than the performance of the season for these Reds.

“We need to try to create our own atmosphere,” Robertson added. “Of course we’ve not got our fans so it’s up to us to create our own atmosphere and create a Champions League night at Anfield without fans.”
