We we take a closer look at some of the whys and hows of the match as the Reds dominated possession but couldn’t score against Manchester United

Another goalless game for Jurgen Klopp and his Reds. Liverpool started both halves brightly, and had the lions share of possession yet again. And for the third game in a row, Liverpool could not find a way to get the ball in the back of the net.

Join us as we try and separate narrative from reality of the match up and how it all went down in the end.

Winners

Alisson Becker
The Brazilian net-minder barely had a thing to do in the first half, but was called upon several times in the second half. Alisson came up huge in several occasions, stopping point blank shots (even if they would have been called for offside). He also was quick to come to the edge, or out of, his box several times to clean up potential opportunities as Manchester United tried to find space in behind Liverpool’s defense.

Midfield Center Backs
Speaking of the defense, Fabinho and Jordan Henderson were fantastic today. Fabinho routinely stuffed defenders on the dribble to kill fast breaks, and use his lanky legs to snake the ball away before it reached attackers. Fabinho finished the game with 4 interceptions, 3 clearances, 2 tackles, and 2 blocked shots. His partner, and fellow midfielder-turned-emergency-defender, Jordan Henderson, also put in a good shift. Hendo still wanders a little too much for a center back, but he was much better than against Southampton. The captain led the team with 6 clearances, getting the ball out of harms way a multitude of times in the second half.

Thiago
What can we say other than Thiago is just a pleasure to watch? He was silky smooth on the dribble, calmly shedding pressure before playing killer ball after killer ball. His vision and touch are otherworldly. He also was fantastic on the defensive side, reading the game and making 7 interceptions on the day to go with 3 tackles. I just can’t wait to see him play when the front three are finally back in tune.

Losers

Finishing Boots
Liverpool have a goal scoring problem. They are getting into good positions, and taking plenty of shots, but the finishing has gone ice cold for the Reds. Today, they had 17 shots, including 8 from inside the box.

Over the stretch of 4 games since Liverpool dropped 7 on Aston Villa, the Reds have scored just 1 goal from 62 shots. RobertoFirmino has led the team in shots during that time, going 0 for 13. It’s not just the front three of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, and Sadio Mane that are struggling to finish either. Thirty shots have come from midfielders and defenders, but nothing has managed to find the back of the net.

Trent Alexander-Arnold
The young right back has been so vital to Liverpool’s success over the past few seasons. Unfortunately, he’s hit a bit of a rough patch with his form. He was 0 for 10 in completed crosses today, and seemed to struggle with getting up and down the field. Whether this is long term effects of covid from this summer, or something else, he seems like he could use a game or two off.

A bit of a drab day for Liverpool.

Well. That was a bit of a nothing result.

Liverpool and Manchester United played out a 0-0 in which neither side could really say they played at their best. Liverpool maybe shaded it, but nothing comprehensive. Jürgen Klopp had some mixed feelings at full time.

“If we won 1-0 I’d think it was completely fine”, BBC Sport report the Liverpool manager as saying. “You can’t deny Manchester United chances for 90 minutes. You never could. They’re in a good moment.

“With all the things said before the game - they’re flying and we’re struggling - my boys did a good game tonight.

“First half the counter-press was great, passing was good. But we didn’t score. That’s the most important thing in football.

“The second half was a bit more open. They had two big chances - Alisson made two good saves.

“There is no easy explanation [for their recent lack of goals]. You always miss chances. You have to keep going and try to ignore the talk around it. Everyone wants to see goals. You cannot force it.

“It’s football. These moments happen. You have moments where you can’t explain why you score from all angles. Against Crystal Palace everything ended up in the net. It’s a bit annoying in between these moments.

“I like the game. I saw a lot of really good individual performances and the team performance was good. Not the result we wanted, but the result we got.”

It’s hard not to feel like Liverpool missed a bit of an opportunity here, but it is what it is. Three points against Burnley on Thursday now are a must.

Liverpool played progressively, but lacked conviction in finishing. A frustrating end despite a promising lineup.

MANCHESTER UNITED 0 - 0 LIVERPOOL

Pre-Match

Today’s Northwest Derby is Jurgen Klopp’s 200th game in charge of the Reds. Manchester United has been on a bit of a streak, winning 3 points against Burnley during a mid-week clash in which Paul Pogba decided to show up - hell, he even scored one. And while the title race will probably still come down to Liverpool and Manchester City, today’s game has a bunch of other stuff at stake - our Anfield record, honour, glory, pride, the state of Football Twitter if United fans are allowed a win, etc.

Joel Matip, though rumoured to be fit, is not in the starting lineup. In better news, Thiago Alcantara and Xherdan Shaqiri are - which means that Jordan Henderson will partner Fabinho at centre-back. Not ideal, but we’re working with what we’ve got. Up the Reds!

First Half

Liverpool starts off with an energetic press, and looks comfortable in possession. Shaqiri and Thiago are heavily involved and are commanding the game. The positives end there, since the tempo is brought down to a grind by United’s parked bus. Their game plan is to either ping the ball to Marcus Rashford on the break, or try to win a free-kick or penalty. Andy Robertson gets himself in a few good positions, but is unable to find the net. Bobby Firmino receives a silky pass from Sadio Mane around 16’, but hits it without conviction and it goes wide off David De Gea’s net. He misplaces another shot a few minutes later, while Shaqiri gets a shot deflected. Overall, Liverpool have been overthinking easy moves - passes have been wastefully misplaced and finishing hasn’t been sharp. The tempo of the game has been battered by United’s slow throw-ins and multiple offside calls. We didn’t expect silky possession play, but entertain us and maybe do a goal in the second half, LFC?

Second Half

Liverpool start off looking organized and progressive, but as half wears on they get increasingly sloppy. The last 20 minutes are dominated by United creating chances out of set pieces (corners mostly) and they certainly look a better team than they did in the first half. Bruno Fernandes hits a shot from close to the net at 74’ but Alisson ankles it away. Thiago attempts a few out-of-the-box shots that are slapped away by De Gea. A Marcus Rashford counter-attack run at 82’ is managed wonderfully and assertively by Fabinho (who has been vital throughout this half) - he hits the ball out of play. Alisson makes another critical save soon after, batting away a powerful right-footed shot by Paul Pogba. The half ends 0-0.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Liverpool showed intent and enjoyed significant spells of possession, but were sloppy with their finishing and couldn’t break through United’s packed defence. That, and a shocking number of set pieces and questionable refereeing decisions in United’s favour made this a tough game to watch, and they remain top of the table with an added point in hand from Anfield.

After Liverpool failed to find the net yet again, we want you to rate your man of the match.

For the third game in a row in the Premier League, Liverpool dominated the run of play, but failed to find the net. Thiago Alcantara, in his starting debut at Anfield, ran the game from his central midfield position. His passing range and vision generated plenty of opportunities for the Reds. On the defensive side, Liverpool’s two central midfielders partnering in the center of defense were stellar snuffing out most of Manchester United’s attacks. Fabinho was immense, winning challenge after challenge. Jordan Henderson was also quite stout in the back, and acquitted himself well after a nervy showing against Southampton. Alisson Becker came up huge in the second half, making several point blank saves (though one or two ended up being offside).

Injuries have kept him from playing at Anfield

Not often do we talk about a player signed in one transfer window making his home debut in another transfer window, but that’s the case with Thiago Alcântara. The midfield hasn’t played at Anfield yet because of a run on the treatment table. That could change on Sunday when Liverpool face Manchester United. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was asked about Thiago on Friday in his press conference and this is what he had to say.

“We will see,” Klopp said. “The most important thing is he’s fit, trained, all good. He had now 90 and 45 minutes in the last two games. So, we will see if he can play, which position he will play because there are obviously different options and all that stuff.

“But it’s really good to have him around now because he’s a really good guy and obviously an exceptional football player. It’s like a new signing obviously.

“Now he’s here and let’s hope that it will stay like this for a long, long, long time.”

Give the injuries that Liverpool have elsewhere on the pitch, Thiago would make a huge difference.

It’s a top of the table clash when Liverpool host Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday.

LIVERPOOL VS. MANCHESTER UNITED

| Sunday, January 17th |
Premier League | Anfield
4:30PM GMT/11:30AM EST

It feels like it’s been a very long time since we all got to watch Liverpool play football. It’s been even longer since we’ve been through a game against Manchester United. But on Sunday, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men will arrive at Anfield sitting above Liverpool at the top of the table.

Liverpool have had a poor run of recent form thanks to several key injuries, particularly in the defense. A loss against Southampton in the league was a blow that cost them their hold on the top spot. However, the Reds rarely lose twice in a row, and they’ll understand how much of a morale-booster it would be to break their winless streak against their bitter rivals.

Jürgen Klopp has not ruled out Joel Matip to play alongside Fabinho in the heart of the defense. However, it remains to be seen if Matip really is fit to play a whole game, or if we’ll see another game with Rhys Williams in the line up.

Whoever does earn the right to start with face a tough test against Manchester United’s in form players like Fernandes and Marcus Rashford.

Good news on the horizon for Liverpool, however, is that Thiago Alcantara should slide right into the midfield for his Anfield debut, which will be a huge injection of talent into a side that has been waning in the last month or so.

This game will be Klopp’s 200th match in charge of the team, and he’ll want to cap off that milestone with a win.

Projected Liverpool Lineup (4-3-3)

Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Phillips, Fabinho, Robertson; Henderson, Thiago, Wijnaldum; Salah, Firmino, Mané

Gonna be conservative about the odds of Matip starting, but I’d love to be wrong. If anything, he’ll may be on the bench. Diogo Jota, Kostas Tsimikas, Joe Gomez, and Virgil van Dijk are all long term absences. Naby Keita will sit this one out as a precaution. I know I should be used to seeing all of those names on the injury list, but it’s still daunting looking at it written out like that.

For Man United, Anthony Martial is looking at a late fitness test to determine if he can play. Brandon Williams, Phil Jones, and Victor Lindelof are all missing from the defense.

What the Managers Had to Say

Jürgen Klopp: “But it’s an open game – it was always an open game. Very often when we played United with different managers we had to be dominant in the games, especially when Jose was there. Now with Ole, we will see exactly. Usually they change systems against us and played now I think 10 times or so with four in the back. Against us, PSG and Leipzig and so on, they still played with five in the back. Maybe they will change.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: “I think football and the results in general have sown how important the fans are. We have not lost away in the league since Anfield last year - that is a lot to the fans not being there. It is not home or away advantage. Compared to normal it is a bit of an advantage, it is not just a cliche that you need your supporters.”

The Egyptian talks about his frustration with being subbed out of games.

Much has been made about Mohamed Salah’s visible frustration at being subbed off the pitch during games. It’s clear that Mo wants his goal, and isn’t satisfied if he gets the hook before he manages to grab it.

In an interview with BeIn Sports, Salah discussed his feelings, putting into words what we already knew about him.

“I want to play every minute and every game,” he said bluntly. In fact, he added, he didn’t just want to play 90 minutes. “I want to play 95 minutes, not just 90! But I do respect the manager’s decisions.”

Asked about the title race that Liverpool are involved in, Salah admitted that the lack of fans makes everything much more difficult.

“The situation is completely different now due to the coronavirus, as every team has an equal chance of winning because of the fans’ absence. It’s still early to predict a Premier League winner this season. Everyone is close, but I hope we win it again.”

Tomorrow will be the first big test of their fortitude as the Reds welcome old rivals Manchester United to Anfield. United are in a good run of form that saw them recently overtake Liverpool at the top of the table. A win against them on Sunday will be a statement of intent from a Liverpool side who have seen injuries and exhaustion cause them to wane in recent weeks.

Sending out some positive vibes ahead of tomorrow’s match.

There’s lots of negativity circulating around the place these days. And it’s understandable. We have just two points in the last three matches. Manchester United are top of the table (excuse me, I just threw up a little in my mouth). They have the best away record in the league, and have a good chance of ending our ridiculous home unbeaten run and going six points clear at the top (excuse me, I just recreated that scene from Team America).

Anyway, we need some good vibes. And what better way to get some good vibes than by reliving some incredible goals from yesteryear. The list—compiled by the club’s official YouTube site—has many of the usual suspects.
