The Reds added another defeat to a pretty crappy week.

It’s fair to say that I enjoyed not having to write about Liverpool defeats very often this season. But now we’ve had to deal with two losses in four days, and it really doesn’t feel great.

Adam Lallana, who was afforded a rare opportunity to start, lamented the fact that the team failed to take their chances when they got them early on.

“There were big moments in the first half where we failed to score,” he said.

“It felt like an end-to-end game, a typical cup tie – probably good for the neutral. [But] we’re disappointed not to score. The second half started well, there were a couple of breaks in play and it felt like we lost our momentum a little bit.

“A couple of mistakes and if you let a good team like Chelsea counter on you like that, they’re going to have chances. We’re bitterly disappointed with the result. Credit to Chelsea.”

This was a week to forget in an otherwise overwhelmingly positive season. They’ve now experienced losses in the Champions League, the FA Cup and the Premier League, but there’s another game on Saturday. Lallana promises that we’ll see a “big reaction” from the team against Bournemouth. They’re only four Premier League victories away from winning the league title, so every game is a big one from here on out.

We take a deep dive into the winners, losers and assorted narratives after the Reds’ elimination from the FA Cup.

After putting out a semi-arsed XI for the first time in a domestic cup game this season, Jürgen Klopp’s Reds nonetheless fell at Stamford Bridge, suffering their second consecutive loss for the first time since January 2019, and sparking hysteria in the fan base.

Below, we look at some winners and losers on the night, as well as dive into why this is all actually fine, we promise!

Winners

Treble Winners: With the Reds out of the FA Cup, any hopes of a treble have now been dashed, and — as was the case for Arsenal’s Invincibles last week — that means celebration for Manchester United, who will remain the only English treble winners, for another year at least.

With no genuine chance at winning anything of significance this season, I guess it’s nice that these other teams can find some drops of joy in the misfortune of others. We shouldn’t deny them that.

Kepa Arizzabalaga: The world’s most expensive goalkeeper has been on the bench for Chelsea’s past five games, after it came to light that he wasn’t really very good. Replaced by former Manchester City substitute and potential Immortal Willy Caballero, the Spaniard was given a chance to prove his worth in England’s second-tier domestic competition tonight, and, while proving a value of £75m in a competition worth at most just shy of £7m is literally impossible, the 25-year old did his job when called upon, making five saves, four of which came from about eight yards.

It is worth pointing out, however, that despite the proximity of the ball to the goal when these shots were taken, none of them forced the goalkeeper to make any particularly spectacular saves. You see...

Losers

Shooting: ...the Reds took really bad shots. Of the five shots Liverpool’s attackers managed to place between the sticks tonight — from 14 total — one hundred percent were laced directly at the goalkeeper. That four of these were absolutely massive chances from close range at which any sort of placement to the side of the stopper would have made them completely unsaveable makes it all the more frustrating for fans of the Merseysiders. However...

Adrian: ...shooting straight at the goalkeeper can actually be a pretty sensible strategy, or so would Adrián San Miguel de Castillo’s performance have you think. Chelsea battered the Spaniard with three laced efforts directly at the center of his being in the first half, and by the time the third attempt came around — a belter from Willian wide to the right — the former West Ham man had forgotten how hands work, or what sport he was playing.

Seemingly attempting some sort of volleyball bump, Adrián failed to make proper contact with the shot, and could only watch as it bounced off him and nestled into his side netting. It gave Chelsea an opener and forced their visitors to chase a game for the fourth time in a row, a task that proved too much on the night.

Anxious Fans: This writer very much does not count himself among these, as will be explained in a second, but if you’re of the nervous persuasion, the coming week is probably going to be pretty rough, huh. The Reds have lost three times in four games. They may be dumped out of two of their remaining three competitions in the space of eight days. Their once seemingly unassailable 22-point lead in the league has been cut to... well, still 22 points. Indeed, dark times are ahead.

Controlling the Narrative

Social media sites are never the best place to find a measured take, and Liverpool fans are riddled enough with trauma from previous decades to be particularly susceptible to the sort of hysteria that follows a loss or drop in performance, but heavens to Betsy there was some hyperbole out there tonight. If you’re inclined to believe the sky is falling on Anfield right now, here are some words that will, hopefully, calm you just a little bit.

The Reds weren’t actually unbeatable at any point. Liverpool’s preposterous points haul — 109 points from the last 114 on offer — did not reflect their dominance up until this point of the season and was not sustainable. It was a result of a very, very good team — one of the very best, in fact — catching some timely breaks. Having conceded only 1 goal in 11 games, from 8.6 expected goals, the Reds were always going to regress at some point. That regression is fine and expected.

The Watford game — while undeniably terrible — was not part of some trend. The Reds were behind against West Ham, having conceded the first two shots on target to the tune of a whopping 0.13 expected goals, but had taken an early lead before that, and always felt like they had another gear in them. Similarly, for all the criticism Klopp’s men received for beating Norwich by only a single goal, the match was never close or in danger of getting away from them. The Watford match — in which Liverpool simply didn’t show up — is an extreme outlier in a season where they have largely found a way to win very even contests, and happened to occur within a stretch of even contests where the Reds have, quite normally, I assure you, not always found a way to win.

Losing away to Chelsea and Atlético Madrid is fine! Not once in any other year would these sorts of losses have been considered anything but completely normal. The latter are the best defensive team on the continent and got an early lead from a 4v11 on a corner, while the former are the third of fourth best side in England, and beat a Liverpool XI with five starters, who nonetheless should have scored at least two goals from their four massive chances. We used to lose all the time, to much worse teams. Losing away to actually good teams is not uncommon.

The Reds aren’t throwing away the title. They won’t be Invincibles, won’t win a treble, probably won’t win a double, and may not even set the record for points scored in a league season, but the Premier League title is coming home to Anfield for the very first time in May. Enjoy that. Please!

What Happens Next

The Reds host 18th placed Bournemouth — their fourth consecutive match against teams in the relegation zone — on Saturday tea time and will look to not only bounce back from the Watford loss and FA Cup exit, but also get the good feeling of a win back ahead of their must-win clash with Atlético Madrid the following Wednesday.

Up the still definitely winning the league Reds!

Well that wasn’t fun.

Another loss. Welp.

Let’s be clear here: Liverpool were much better here, away to a much stronger side, than against Watford. An Adrian error and a brilliant goal from Ross Barkley (of all people) was the difference here. It’s one of those days. But Jürgen Klopp isn’t taking any excuses.

“I would really like if you stop mentioning it [the Watford loss]”, the Liverpool manager told BBC Sport. “But we deserved to lose because they scored twice and we made massive mistakes for both goals.

”After that it was a completely open game, we had three-four shots in a row in the first half and Sadio Mane was close to finishing but the intensity of the game is why we made some changes. We needed fresh legs and then it needs to settle a bit but conceding does not help. The boys reacted well, I liked it but the second goal is a problem and Chelsea defended physically well.

”We are not unlucky in these moments, we looked good and Adrian made a superb save initially before the first goal. We have to be ready in the moments. We played Chelsea and they play in counter-attacks and that is OK, in moments they struggled with us. A lot of parts of the performance I really liked. We know we have to improve, it is not about destiny, not about not clicking here or there, it is all about us and we have to take it in the right way. It is not the best three weeks of the whole season but it is a a chance to make it the best three weeks now and that is the plan.

”We are not interested in Atletico Madrid, it is all about Bournemouth. They are fighting with all they have and they did really well against Chelsea. Nobody has to feel sorry for us, we will win football games and that is what we want to do on Saturday.”

So this feels like a mini crisis now. I don’t know. I want to believe it’s nothing.

For the second consecutive match, the Reds are traveling back to Merseyside at the end of a defeat.

Chelsea 2 - 0 Liverpool

Chelsea: Willian 13’, Barkley 64’

Pre-Match

It’s not the strongest line-up Jurgen Klopp can run out, but equally, not the weakest. Youth players Neco Williams and Curtis Jones take their earned spots in the starting XI after excellent showings so far in the FA Cup. Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi also get starts in the front three, alongside the one and only Sadio Mane. It should be an interesting one!

First Half

If you were hoping for a response by the Reds, they showed one right from the off. Liverpool nearly get in a couple of times, from some patented Kloppo gengenpressing. The ball falls kindly to Sadio Mane near the penalty spot, and despite being able to take a touch and sort his feet, he hits it directly at the keeper.

Chelsea respond by creating a big chance of their own from a counter attack, and then immediately thereafter from a corner. Olivier Giroud is inches away from nodding home an effort from close range. There are goals to be had out there tonight.

Goal. Willian nets for Chelsea after a cheap give away from Fabinho. Adrian should have done better, but the shot from outside the box was hit with some venom, and the backup keeper couldn’t hold on.

Kepa just made a quadruple save and like...I seriously don’t know how we didn’t equalize there.

With half an hour gone, Sadio Mane creates another good chance by wiggling through the Chelsea defense and working Kepa far post. Unfortunately, he was up to the challenge yet again, and Williams could not turn the follow-up on target.

Goal aside, the mixed batch of Reds made a pretty good account of themselves in the first half. Liverpool have more shots inside the box, more on target, and more big chances. Unfortunately, their finishing is letting them down. That said, Mane is a looking a constant threat, and Minamino is looking like the exciting player we signed from Salzburg. Liverpool are very much in this at the break, they just need to find their finishing boots (and/or bring on Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah) in the second half.

Second Half

It’s a pretty tame opening few minutes of the second half, but I feel the need to work in a special shout-out to Curtis Jones, who has not looked out of place in this midfield. The young Scouse academy player has been sharp, full of confidence, and doing all sorts of nifty things in attack.

Close! Fabinho gives away a free kick in a dangerous area, and the resulting free kick rattles the crossbar before going safely over. Liverpool are riding their luck at the moment.

Goal. What did I say about Liverpool riding their luck. Van Dijk and Jones conspire to give the ball away, and Chelsea breaks with pace. Gomez does not close down Barkley, and the former Everton man hits a thunderous strike from outside the box to beat Adrian.

Moments later, Chelsea should have made it 3-0 when Pedro goes through on goal. This losing business isn’t fun. Please stop it, Liverpool.

With just over 20 minutes to play, Jurgen Klopp is bringing on Roberto Firmino and James Milner for Divock Origi and Curtis Jones. Probably about 10 minutes too late, but here we are.

Chelsea, frustratingly, continue to look more dangerous in this second half. Giroud just beat the offside trap and rattled the post. Probably should have scored. Yikes.

Klopp makes a last roll of the dice, bringing in Mo Salah for Adam Lallana. Please do something, Mo. Or anyone in Red. I’m not picky.

Final Thoughts

It’s hard to read too much into this result because of the highly-changed side, but on the surface it doesn’t look good. And Liverpool are once again out of this historic competition, which is really a shame considering how good the full-strength Reds can be. Hopefully Klopp can turn things around by the weekend, and certainly by the time Atletico come rolling into town.

The Chelsea manager was full of praise for Klopp and the Reds ahead of Tuesday’s fifth round FA Cup tie.

Liverpool were unbeatable. At least in England and when playing their first team. And then, rather suddenly and unexpectedly, they weren’t after losing their first league game of the season to relegation-threatened Watford.

Rather than being a sign that, perhaps, they’re vulnerable, Chelsea manager Frank Lampard says that Liverpool’s recent defeat shows just how good of a season they’ve had—and how hard a task Chelsea are up against in the FA Cup.

“Liverpool have just had a couple of results like the rest of us do,” he noted. “They’ve been out on their own this season. It has been an incredible feat from Jürgen Klopp and the whole squad and they have just become slightly normal.

“They have become relatively human for one game. It can happen in this Premier League, which is incredibly competitive. It shows how well they have done in the last year or so, particularly this season.”

As such, Lampard is expecting a difficult match—and isn’t expected to rest or rotate heavily, likely instead relying on a strong squad and treating today’s cup tie as though it were a regular Premier League fixture.

And while in the present he’s focused on Liverpool as opponents, in the larger picture he’s also focused on the journey the Reds have made under Jürgen Klopp, seeing it as something of a template for what he hopes to achieve.

“I remember them [celebrating] when they drew with West Brom,” he added. “I watched a documentary recently where it came up [and they were] ridiculed for it at the time. But to me it is very symbolic of the journey of a team.

“It’s a reference point in terms of what a work in progress looks like and it can take time and behind what we can see now is a lot of sweat and hard work from everyone involved, which is what I’m trying to do here.”

Liverpool just lost their first league game of the season. That won’t impact Jürgen Klopp’s approach to Chelsea in the FA Cup.

After suffering the disappointment of their first loss of the Premier League season against Watford on the weekend, Liverpool are back into the action quickly with a mid-week FA Cup tie against Chelsea.

It will be a chance for the Reds to bounce back; to show their resiliency following a rare setback. There’s a question, though, when it comes to who it will be who gets a chance to respond to Saturday’s defeat.

“The defeat has absolutely nothing to do with the line-up for tomorrow,” manager Jürgen Klopp said when asked if it would be an all senior squad or if there would be some youth involved on Tuesday.

Klopp refused to be drawn any deeper into the question, saying that as Liverpool “have no clue what Chelsea are doing,” he wasn’t going to tell the Blues what his plans are for Liverpool’s FA Cup lineup.

However, the expectation of many is that the manager will field a strong and fairly senior squad, albeit one with space for a few youth players—the likes of Curtis Jones and Neco Williams, perhaps.

One young name that won’t be involved, though, is Harvey Elliott, with the young attacker off with the U19s facing Benfica in UEFA’s youth league. On the flip side, both James Milner and Joe Gomez have been passed fit.

“We always play the team that gives us the best opportunity to go to the next round,” Klopp added. “That can be for different reasons—the physical demands of the season, when are the games, fitness levels.

“It was always like this with the exception of the last replay against Shrewsbury. Apart from that it has always been the same and it will be like this now as well.”

The Reds look to bounce back from their first league defeat in over a year as they take on Chelsea in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Chelsea vs Liverpool

| Tuesday, March 3rd |
FA Cup | Stamford Bridge
7:45PM BST / 2:45PM EST

It’s a rare occasion for Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool, having to bounce back from a defeat, and, on paper, they could hardly have had a much tougher game in which to do so, taking the trip to Stamford Bridge for an FA Cup clash with Chelsea.

Frank Lampard’s side had started the season off fantastically, with the youthful squad matching perfectly the manager’s ambitious, attacking style of play. In recent months, however, both these factors have come back to haunt the Blues, as the gung-ho tactics have failed to protect the inexperienced players when things have not gone their way.

In short, Chelsea have not strung together two wins in a row since the start of January, and have only managed one from their last five. Some of this is undoubtedly down to injuries — perhaps brought on by the team’s excessively high-energy style — and Tammy Abraham, N’Golo Kanté, Christian Pulisic, and Callum Hudson-Odoi are all set to miss out tomorrow night, with Andreas Christensen a doubt.

Projected Liverpool Lineup (4-3-3)

Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, van Dijk, Robertson; Fabinho, Wijnaldum, Oxlade-Chamberlain; Mané, Firmino, Salah

For the first time this season, we are likely to see Klopp put out a full-strength XI for a domestic cup, with Harvey Elliott’s inclusion in tomorrow’s UEFA Youth League squad a strong hint that the FA Cup has now proceeded far enough that it will receive the full firepower of the Merseysiders.

Joe Gomez will likely return to the side following Saturday’s Dejan Lovren disasterclass, hopefully bringing back the magic his partnership with Virgil van Dijk has produced in the past.

Naby Keïta will miss out again due to a sore hip, joining Jordan Henderson in the stands, and reducing Klopp’s options in midfield, indicating that some combination of Fabinho, Georginio Wijnaldum, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Adam Lallana, while a returning James Milner could be a surprise inclusion.

Xherdan Shaqiri remains out of the picture, and unless Divock Origi has done something dramatic in training, the front three will make only their second ever start together in the FA Cup.

What the Managers Said

Jürgen Klopp: “We don’t really think about it, it’s not more pressure or less pressure than before, it’s just the last 16 of the FA Cup and we want to go through. That’s the plan and that’s what hopefully everybody can see.”

Frank Lampard: “We would expect them to put out a strong team. They have done well in the last year, and their defeat won’t make it any easier.”
