There’s still one game to play, but with the Premier League season over the players said their traditional goodbyes.

The 2018-19 Premier League season is over and Liverpool came oh so tantalizingly close to winning their first league title in 29 years, losing just once and earning 97 points along the way but in the end coming up one point shy of Manchester City.

Any sadness over that will be mitigated by two things. One, there’s a Champions League final on June 1st to look forward to. And two, Liverpool have built a formidable team of players mostly in their primes and this won’t be the last we see of them.

For this season, though, this was the last Anfield will see of them. It was an ending even if it might not be the ending. There’s that final to look forward to and most of them will be back, bolstered perhaps by a new signing or two over the summer.

So there was a celebratory if slightly bittersweet mood as the players, manager, and staff did their lap around Anfield to celebrate the season—the lap they do after the final home game of every season, saying goodbye to another year.

There were the cheers, the tears, the awarding of honours—a Golden Boot for Alisson and a shared Golden Ball for Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané—and the children of the players playing out on the pitch as the Kop cheered them on.

For most, this isn’t the end. Not quite of this season and certainly not in Liverpool red. But it is the end of a long Premier League season that saw one of the great, all-time efforts by any Liverpool side, ever, regardless that they came in second.

Goodbye to the 2018-19 Premier League season. It’s been a hell of a ride, and that ride isn’t over just yet.

Liverpool didn’t quite get where they wanted to go in the league but it was still a phenomenal season.

Liverpool didn’t quite get the Premier League title the fans were craving, but finishing on 97 points—a total that would have won it all but one other time—and just one point back of Manchester City is nothing to be ashamed of.

Jürgen Klopp’s boys gave it their all, and on the final day of the season there took home multiple individual honours for it, starting off with Virgil van Dijk being handed the Premier League’s player of the season award.

Teammates Sadio Mané and Mohamed Salah were fellow nominees along with City trio Raheem Sterling, Sergio Aguero, and Bernardo Silva and Chelsea’s Eden Hazard. The award was announced by the league shortly before kickoff.

Then, at the final whistle, a clean sheet a two goals for Sadio Mané meant that Alisson Becker won this season’s Golden Gloves award for most clean sheets while Mané shares Golden Boot with teammate Salah and Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Of the trio, Mané is the only one to have scored all of his 22 goals from open play, but the league does not look to that or to games or minutes played, and the three attackers will share the award for the 2018-19 season.

Elsewhere in awards and records for Liverpool players, Trent Alexander-Arnold’s assist on Mané’s second today set a new record for assists by a defender in a Premier League season with 12.

With a 2-0 victory on the last day of the season, we dig a little deeper into what it means for Liverpool.

There were no surprises on this, the last day of the 2018-19 Premier League season. Liverpool did what they needed to do at home against a spirited Wolverhampton Wanderers side, while elsewhere, the league leader Manchester City also did what they had to do.

Now join us as we examine some of the narratives, tactics, reactions, and questions Liverpool will be dealing with and the fans will be talking about in the aftermath.

Winners and Losers

Liverpool. The Reds scored two goals more than Wolves did, so from that perspective, they won. But in all seriousness, despite the heartbreak and disappointment of coming close yet again, there’s a tremendous amount of positives to take from this season. This is a supremely-well-drilled, insanely talented, young, and immensely likeable squad has clearly bought in to their manager’s vision 110%. And make no mistake - it all begins with that manager.

The last time this club got close to the title, you had the sense that removing one vital cog from that machine might make it all fall apart. To a degree, that is exactly what happened in the aftermath of that 2013-14 season. This time, the whole is truly greater than the sum of its parts. The emphatic triumph over Barcelona mere days ago remains the greatest indicator of this new normal.

I don’t want to talk about losers. There are some, but they mostly live on the internet. Klopp gets a great deal of grief for not having won a trophy with Liverpool, but there are few other managers who have so consistently and emphatically advocated for fans and players to remember the most important thing: that we should enjoy football. This club is at its best when it remembers that fact.

Liverpool didn’t win the title this year. But you’d have to have the narrowest field of vision to contemplate thinking of this squad as losers.

Dissecting the Narrative

No matter how you slice it, 97 points is a ridiculous haul over a Premier League season. This time last year, Liverpool had amassed 75 points. This year, they have 22 more. Last year, this squad conceded 38 goals, while scoring 84. They notched 89 this year while allowing only 22.

No, there isn’t a trophy for second place, and nobody is really arguing an impressive campaign is “like a trophy.” But as he’s done every season since taking the reins, Jürgen Klopp has vastly improved this squad’s ability to compete. There’s no reason to think he can’t keep that going.

Yes, a lot of things had to go right for Liverpool to even be in this position. Former Stoke City player Xherdan Shaqiri had to briefly turn into a super-sub. There was Divock Origi vs. Everton. Divock Origi vs. Newcastle. Hugo Lloris vs. a cruel bounce. There’s no guarantee that similar magic will materialize next year.

But lots of things went right for Manchester City as well. Goal line reviews. Vincent Kompany’s wonderstrike against Leicester City. There will be other challengers as well. Spurs look poised to compete, especially if they actually decide to spend any money at all over this summer. As supporters, the best we can hope for is to be in the running on the last say of the season. Outside of City and Liverpool, nobody else was even in the frame today.

What Happens Next

In case you’ve been living underneath Charlie Adam, Liverpool have a Champions League final to prepare for, against Tottenham Hotspur. They’ll need to gather their energy, lick their wounds, and get ready to finish the job they started in Kiev last year.

How The Fans Reacted

Win or lose, this club is huge. Once again, here’s the Prime Minister of Iceland.

Positive emotions as Liverpool go close but not quite close enough.

Sometimes, football feels rubbish. Sometimes it hurts. Sometimes it feels like you did everything right but the stars just refuse to align. Today is one of those times.

Liverpool beat Wolves and hit 97 points, but Manchester City’s win over Brighton ensures that the title goes their way for another season. What can you do, eh.

Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp didn’t seem too much in the mood to curse the Gods.

“Congratulations to Manchester City”, BBC Sport report Klopp as saying. “We tried everything to make it as difficult as possible but not difficult enough. I couldn’t be more proud of the boys.

”It’s incredible what they did all season and today was a strange situation. We were really good until 1-0, what happened then was clear. You can’t tell the people to calm down. At that moment [when Liverpool fans celebrated Brighton’s goal] it was a shock for everyone and Wolves were there. We had to fight. In the end we scored two and kept a clean sheet. It’s nice but not how we wanted it.

”It’s clear we had to work hard and City too. Our target during the week was to get 97 points, we got that – that’s special. We want to write our own history and we did. Today feels not so good but we have plenty of time to prepare for an important game in three weeks.

“The team made so many big steps in the last year. The boys were all there from last season apart from Alisson. He had a big impact but all the rest were here last season.

”It’s a very special season, a better season than I played with my team [Borussia Dortmund] when we were champions in Germany. But we cannot ignore one team were better.

”It’s clear we were lucky in moments, like City were. We were unlucky against City but scored in the last second against Everton and late on against Newcastle, they could have been draws as well.

”The season is a very long, hard one. You have to deal with setbacks. We were always competitive. City got the points they have because we were there. They have 198 points in two years, that’s special. We made such big steps. It’s only the first step. Always after a good year we lost key players [in the past] but we won’t [this time] so we’ll be there again.”

So that happens. Football breaks your heart sometimes. One more game this season, though, and it could be the one that truly brings joy to everyone.

With the final match of the league season in the books, we want you to rate Liverpool’s players and choose your man of the match.

That’s all folks. The 2018-19 Premier League season has come to a close. Liverpool also came close, but ultimately could not outpace the juggernaut that Manchester City’s ownership has put together.

Sadio Mané opened the scoring for the home side in the 17th minute and added a second late in the second half. The visitors were as well-organized as you might expect for a side that should challenge the structural integrity of the perceived Top-6 cluster next year. The defiantly party-like atmosphere that permeated the grounds at the outset of the match gradually gave way to the recognition that City had done their job.

Three words: We go again.

Another three words: Champions. League. Final.

Now let us know how you saw it. With our usual polling tool out of service, we’re instead giving you a choice between a few of the players we thought looked best today for the Reds, so make your choice below and vote for who you think should be the man of the match—or take to the comments to let us know that we got it wrong by leaving the real man of the match off the list entirely.

And as always, anyone visiting on Apple News or Google AMP who wish to vote and can’t see the poll can make it visible by navigating to the front page of The Liverpool Offside and re-entering the story.

Liverpool did the thing, but unfortunately Brighton did not, so this historic season ends bittersweetly.

Liverpool 2 - 0 Wolverhampton

Liverpool: Mane 17’ & 81’

Pre-Match

Whatever happens today, we know that we mounted an incredible season and we’ve all been lucky to be part of it. The chances of Manchester City dropping points may be unlikely, but stranger things have happened (like 4-0 against Barcelona) and titles have been won on less. Nerves have kicked in, though, and things are only likely to get nervier from here.

First Half

IT’S TIME! We’ve kicked off and Wolves have already tried to throw us off by making us attack towards the Kop in the first half. It’s sunny and bright at Anfield, and hopes are high. Wolves are here to play, which is great because that’s how we do our best, but here’s hoping we don’t have to try to break them down.

Things were steadily building towards a breakthrough and thankfully it comes through a a gorgeous Sadio Mane goal to put Liverpool ahead at 17 minutes. Thankfully that’ll settle the nerves a little bit going into this, although it’s all been Liverpool for these first twenty minutes so we have little to worry about. (Except I guess Brighton scoring).

Things, of course, have gone a bit downhill since the results of Brighton and Manchester City have changed, with the crowd and apparently the team looking pretty distracted (understandably - the team needs the crowd and vice versa) but all Liverpool need to do is hold this scoreline. A few more goals would be nice, just in case, but 1-0 is truly all we need if Brighton can do their job.

Liverpool win a corner around the 32nd minute and Mohamed Salah tries valiantly to boot it in, but goes skyward. It’s fine, we’re fine, everything is fine, there’s no need to be upset just yet. Anfield, unfortunately, has still remained quiet, so here’s hoping the half knocks some more excitement into everyone. We can’t let Wolves beat us. Not now, not today, not ever. We can only worry about ourselves, and am I trying too hard at this point to sound optimistic because maybe I am.

Second Half

We’re out for the second half and with everything to play for. A big big second half for everyone is ahead. Klopp didn’t make any changes, naturally, but they’ve dominated so far so a change hasn’t exactly been necessary. The worst part may be the little chyron beneath the score every once in a while, reminding us that City will win the title if the results hold. Great, yes, we needed that reminder.

We see the first card of the match when Ryan Bennett takes down Sadio Mane on a promising counter-attack, and it only takes a minute or two for Diogo Jota to win a yellow as well. Wolves are definitely going to try to go out swinging, that’s for sure. Liverpool need to get their heads back in this game, though, as they’re getting a bit sloppy with their passes and causing more unnecessary tension for us.

We’re 58 minutes in and things seem a little more desperate as the Reds fight to take control back and keep Wolves from getting into our half. They’ve made some decent efforts and we’ve been good to beat them back, but they shouldn’t be getting there in the first place. In the meantime, Jordan Henderson makes a great run and sends a lovely cross towards Mane in the box, but Mane misses it by centimeters and Rui Patricio picks it up too easily. Mane to his credit makes up for it by racing back and setting up both Mo Salah and Divock Origi for his last involvement in the match. Klopp goes ahead and makes his first change in the 63rd minute, bringing on James Milner for Origi.

Things, of course, are not going the way we wanted them to in the south coast but it’s better to accept that now than keep hoping for something miraculous when we can focus on this, this match right here. Even as clearly tired as we are, and we do look tired after what was a BONKERS season, we ca hold ourselves high in knowing we mounted the best title challenge this club has ever seen.

Of course, there’s still a little less than 15 minutes for things to change as of this moment and goodness can still win out and not evil but you know. Blood and oil money and that. Liverpool have everything to be proud of this year, truly, including the way they’ve been able to fight the pressure that all that darkness can bring from forty five minutes down the road.

Is anything more annoying than Arlo White and Graeme Le Saux commentating on the City game from Anfield?? Because I’m about to jump through the screen and punch them all. Thankfully, we can count on Sadio Mane to bring spirits back up when we need them by scoring his second of the day with that great little head of his to make it two for us. Klopp brings on Joe Gomez to give Andy Robertson a bit of rest in the dying minutes of this game. The best change, though, comes with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain coming on for Georginio Wijnaldum to at least get a few minutes before potentially appearing on the bench in Madrid.

Because at least we have Madrid? AND THEY FUCKING DON’T.

Final Thoughts

While Liverpool were able to secure the win, dropped points earlier in the year cost us. With the best season ever points wise in the books, though, we have nothing to be ashamed of. It just stings a little bit. Only a little bit.

Here it is. The final match. It’s all come down to this and even if Liverpool win today, they still need Manchester City to drop points. While that outcome is extremely unlikely, we’ll still hopefully enjoy this last Anfield outing until the preseason. The good news is that unlike Manchester City, we’re heading to Madrid in a couple weeks for the Champions League final, so this isn’t the last time we’ll see this truly transcendent group of Reds take the pitch. While a mysterious muscle strain has kept Roberto Firmino out of contention, Mohamed Salah has been deemed fit to play following his concussion during last week’s Newcastle matchup, and nearly everyone else thought to be on the edge should be considered. It’ll be a memorable afternoon for the Reds no matter how you slice it.

The Liverpool star has declared himself fit for the final league match of the season

Much has been made about Liverpool’s historic 4-0 win over Barcelona on Tuesday night. Part of the reason why it was so incredible was due to the fact that Mo Salah (along with Roberto Firmino) was missing for the Reds.

“It was unbelievable,” he told Liverpoolfc.com on Friday. “Last season we qualified [for the final] in Rome away, so we couldn’t enjoy it as much [as at Anfield]. Now we qualified at our home, so it was unbelievable.

“Two times in the final in a row is something unbelievable.” Salah said. “I hope this season we’re going to win it.”

You may remember that one of the reasons that Liverpool lost to Real Madrid in the Champions League Final last year was because Salah got hurt because of Sergio Ramos being a shithouse.

“I will be ready, yes,” Salah told the official team site when asked about whether or not he would play against Wolves.
