Sometimes football matches are just a bit nuts. Tonight was one of those nights.

Liverpool 5 - 3 Chelsea

Reds: Keita 23’, Alexander-Arnold 38’, Wijnaldum 43’, Firmino 55’, Oxlade-Chamberlain 84’
Blues: Giroud 45+3’, Abraham 61’, Pulisic 73’

Pre-Match

All about that trophy lift today. But lifting the big shiny thing after a win over Chelsea sure would feel better than the alternatives. So, let’s do that, Liverpool. The line-up is as you’d expect. The only exception is Naby Keita coming in for the injured Jordan Henderson.

First Half

The referee holding his whistle after a clear foul on Mohamed Salah? Drink. Ignored penalty shout aside it’s a pretty evenly matched and cagey opening few minutes between the two sides. Chelsea is doing well at beating the press with big switches, and the Reds have nearly gotten in behind with quick counters and balls over the top.

GOAL! Naby Keita wins the ball off Willian high up the pitch, takes a couple of touches and then fires a shot from about 25 yards out. Kepa’s outstretched arms can do nothing to stop the well-struck shot from kissing the underside of the crossbar on the way to hitting the back of the net.

Things are getting surprisingly testy between the sides. Mané seems to be in a fight with the entire Chelsea defense, and Jurgen Klopp and Frank Lampard exchange some words after Mané wins a free kick in a dangerous position.

GOAL!! Speaking of, Andre Marriner reluctantly blew for the free kick after multiple fouls by multiple players on Mané. Trent Alexander-Arnold places it, and curls it perfectly up and over the wall.

GOAL!!! Liverpool win a corner, and a Chelsea defender appears to handle it in the box. Gini Wijnaldum doesn’t wait around for the VAR check, and decides instead just to volley it into the roof of the net.

Goal. Giroud pulls one back just before the break, after a kind rebound falls his way. Alisson—who does great for the first effort—is pissed, probably because that goal officially sinks his hopes of winning the Golden Gloves.

Second Half

Liverpool, and Mo Salah in particular, will be annoyed that they haven’t made it 4-1 to start the half. Salah was clear through on goal after a brilliant flick from Bobby, but seemed to get caught in two minds and couldn’t hit the target with his weak effort. The Reds start the half well on top, and are absolutely carving Chelsea open to start the half...and...

GOAL! Trent has acres of space to look up and pick out a pass, and he puts it on a plate for Bobby Firmino, who heads it home like an old school center forward! And Bobby gets his Anfield goal. GET IN!

Goal. The goal fest continues! Christian Pulisic links up with Tammy Abraham, who both just came on, to create a goal. Pulisic skins Gomez, and sets it on a plate for Abraham.

This game has flipped on its head after the subs. Jurgen Klopp responds with some subs of his own. James Milner and Curtis Jones come on for goalscorers Gini and Naby. This appearance also ensures a Premier League winners medal for Curtis.

Goal. This would be a hell of a match to a neutral, but we’re not that here. We could do without this bullshit frankly. Anyway, goal for Pulisic. The game is wide open, and Liverpool could really do with a quiet 10 minutes.

Klopp brings Salah off for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain with about 12 minutes of regulation to go. Mo is clearly upset not to score tonight, despite his many opportunities.

GOAL! It’s a brilliant counterattacking goal from the Reds! Chelsea send in a cross from a free kick, but it’s headed away, and Liverpool were off to the races. It’s played to Robertson out wide, and he beats his man down the line, before sending in a dangerous cross for Ox to drive home.

Final Thoughts

Tonight always promised to be a mad night. How can we concentrate on a football match with a big trophy lift waiting for us? It ended up being especially mad. Goals everywhere! Fireworks outside the stadium! And no one inside it! Anyway, it’s yet another win, and a sneak preview to Chelsea attempting to recreate Liverpool 13/14 next year.

With pivotal victory in a match that was primed for drama, we want you to rate Liverpool’s players and choose your man of the match.

As tends to be the case in these fixtures, the moment of silence in honor of the Hillsborough victims was the calm before the storm. So many questions swirled around this match beforehand - could Liverpool keep pace with Manchester City, could they exorcise the ghosts of that other match against Chelsea, would Chelsea find some other way to spoil the party? - it was almost a relief to get the match underway.

Once the football started however, it was clear that Liverpool meant business. They harried Chelsea relentlessly, and worked the ball around patiently, waiting for their opportunities. The visitors, for their part, stuck to their gameplan, and the threat of a sucker punch was very apparent and very real. There was a very real fear that Liverpool would once again dictate proceedings, only to stumble at a critical moment.

Thankfully, Sadio Mané and Mohamed Salah took matters into their own hands (or feet). Naby Keïta put in a superbly confident performance. Liverpool emerged from this battle with all three points, another clean sheet, and added resolve as they try to catch Manchester City.

Now let us know how you saw it. With our usual polling tool out of service, we’re instead giving you a choice between a few of the players we thought looked best today for the Reds, so make your choice below and vote for who you think should be the man of the match—or take to the comments to let us know that we got it wrong by leaving the real man of the match off the list entirely.

And as always, anyone visiting on Apple News or Google AMP who wish to vote and can’t see the poll can make it visible by navigating to the front page of The Liverpool Offside and re-entering the story.

The Liverpool captain praised his team for besting another hurdle in title race.

Eden Hazard was running menacingly at the Liverpool defense, Jordan Henderson was bombing forward in attack and there was even a slip. Once again, Liverpool welcomed Chelsea at Anfield as they infamously did at about this stage of that Premier League title chase five years ago and The Narrative was nigh near unbearable for the supporters in red.

But as has been the hallmark of a Liverpool squad that has been molded in the image of their indomitable manager, Jürgen Klopp, this Reds side embraced the pressure and banished their ghosts on their way to a 2-0 victory with massive title implications. An enormous second half opener from Sadio Mané quickly followed by a stunning long range strike from Mohamed Salah a mere 2 minutes and 22 seconds later blew the lid of an Anfield crowd that to that point had oscillated between deafeningly boisterous support and nervy anxiety.

However, what turned out to be a major difference between today and the last time these two teams met with such weighty implications was the presence of Jordan Henderson, who had been unavailable in the crushing 2014 loss due to suspension. Back as captain and given license to roam further forward, the much-maligned midfielder was the one to find Mané at the back post in the 51st minute and the 28-year-old was buzzing in the post-match interview:

“There was a period in the second half where we blew them away a little bit,” the England international said speaking to Sky Sports. “We were on top, we could have scored a few more but they have a couple of good chances as well so we have to be careful of that. Overall, it is a good performance because Chelsea are a good side.

“It’s really big for us and it’s another big game we’ve won. It’s an important game but we have just got to concentrate on ourselves like we have been all season, keep working hard, doing the work on the training pitch and then doing the business on the Saturday or in midweek in the Champions League.

“The focus is on the next game, which is another big game and we’ve got a few of those coming over the next few weeks. We’re enjoying it and that’s the main thing and we need to keep doing that.”

Liverpool couldn’t have picked a better time to register just their third win over the Londoners in their last 17 meetings between the two, including their first home victory against the Blues since May 2012. With a kinder run-in than their rivals for the title, the Reds placed the pressure back onto Pep Guardiola and City to respond when the Citizens take on Tottenham in the league next weekend.

Chelsea can’t hurt us any more.

Liverpool 2 - 0 Chelsea

Liverpool: Mane 51’, Salah 53’

Pre-Match

I’m VERY nervous all of a sudden. I slept fine, things were great, and then basically just before the lineups came out, my anxiety kicked in. The lineup is good, We’re strong, we could take these. Why am I so nervous? Could it be the persistent narrative about the last time we faced Chelsea in a title race? Is this when we buck our self-sabotaging ways? One can only fucking hope.

First Half

Things get started with a moment of silence to honor the 96 victims of the Hillsborough Disaster, before starting in earnest. Liverpool get into Chelsea’s area early on and make themselves at home, and Mohamed Salah has an early shot scooped up by Chelsea’s keeper five minutes in. So it’s going to be one of those matches. Not worried (maybe). Thankfully, it’s been all Liverpool in these first ten minutes, as it should be.

Chelsea have slowly gotten back into it, pushing further into our half, and the Reds are doing their chasing best to keep them from getting more dangerous. Roberto Firmino gets a decent counterattack going before being swarmed by blue shirts and knocked to his knees, but the door’s been opened. Naby Keita and Jordan Henderson are really taking their forward positions to heart, with the latter hoping to pounce and get the first goal.

And then the excitement has cooled, both teams have settled past those frantic first fifteen and are looking for the sneakiest ways to score, it feels. Hendo has been pushing and getting into great spaces, especially to pick up that ball from Salah and attempt to fire it in but it goes just over after hitting David Luiz. The Reds are doing a great job of reading Chelsea and picking up every sloppy ball from them - they just need to make something of them. But a goal will come, hopefully before the end of the half.

(We’re not going to talk about the flashback I just had when Willian had the ball on goal and no one could touch him).

There’s been some scary moments of Chelsea possession but it’s really only been that - moments. Liverpool are doing well to close them down and while we haven’t made anything of it, this whole first half has been all Reds in control. Including a HUGE chance from Sadio Mane at the 36th minute when his shot goes just wide but it would’ve been a beauty to go in. Chelsea are forced to make a change just before the 40th minute when Rudiger has to come off with what looks like a knee injury, womp womp.

Liverpool win a free kick in a great spot when Azpilicueta shoves Sadio Mane in the face and wins a yellow card for his efforts and Trent Alexander-Arnold whips it in but no one is able to get on it, unfortunately. With the way things have been going, that’s probably the last worthwhile play of the half.

Second Half

Things have gotten back underway with Liverpool attacking towards the Kop, thankfully no big changes ahead of this half. I don’t have to tell you that this half means everything right now.

I started this paragraph and then - two goals in two minutes! Sadio Mane picks up a peach of a cross from Hendo to make it 1-0 and then not even two minutes later Salah sends in a curler FROM NOWHERE. The Reds are ready to make a mess of Chelsea after taking the first half to figure them out. Confidence is high, shots are coming and things are good.

Eden Hazard gets a great touch and almost finds one for Chelsea but Alisson scares the pants off him and his shot hits the post, but that’s the luckiest they’ve been all game. What a wonder a good keeper is in these big games. Things are getting wild out there as both teams get desperate for a goal - Liverpool for a third and Chelsea for anything to stop the pain.

Liverpool make their first change of the match, taking off Naby Keita (who has been fantastic) for Georginio Wijnaldum, so this is going to be even more fun. Suddenly this games turned into the type of chaos that Liverpool really know how to exploit. Things get scary there when Hendo goes down and looks in real pain, and James Milner comes on for him but he’s able to walk off and onto the bench after an incredible afternoon (with another assist) for the captain.

Klopp riling up the crowds there in these last ten minutes might be my favorite thing ever. Okay, up there with hearing the Hendo song ring through the stadium (it’s been 5 long years...) and it’s safe to say we’ve effectively silenced that terrible slip song for the time being. Sadio very nearly makes it three in the last five minutes, with a fantastic shot unfortunately right at Chelsea’s keeper that they spent all that money for. Salah then comes off for a wild powercube Xherdan Shaqiri and you just know Liverpool want one more insurance goal.

Who cares, though, because this is OUR game and OUR house and we’ve done exactly what we set out to do - RETAKE THAT GOD DAMN TABLE.

Final Thoughts

Liverpool welcome Chelsea to Anfield for their last battle with any of the top six this season.

Liverpool vs Chelsea

| Sunday, April 14th|
Premier League | Anfield
4:30PM GMT/11:30AM EST

This season has been so much fun — even when it has also been scary or heartbreaking or frustrating — that I haven’t looked at any fixture and thought, “I just want this one over with.” But this game? I kind of wish this game was in the bag already. We have to wait until Sunday, which is annoying enough, but the combination of another April battle with Chelsea while Liverpool are in the hunt for the title, mixed with the unacceptable and disgusting racist crap that Chelsea fans were chanting about Mohamed Salah last week, just make me anxious for this one to be over.

The match will also take place a day before the 30th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster — a match which is always a particularly poignant and emotional one for Reds fans.

But it’s not yet, of course, and so Liverpool have one top six battle left in this Premier League season, and luckily it’s at home. Manchester City’s fixture list isn’t so kind: they still have to play Spurs and Manchester United in the league this season.

Chelsea, for their part, currently sit in a distant third place behind Liverpool and City, having won three league games on the bounce. Still, the pressure is on at Chelsea, and manager Maurizio Sarri, to perform, and their record against the top six this season hasn’t been impressive, having lost to Manchester United, Manchester City, and Spurs at various points. But it’s hard to count a team with Eden Hazard out of the running, especially considering the excellent form he’s in — including scoring both goals in their most recent victory over West Ham.

The question for Liverpool will be whether their good luck with hold fast, as it has done in nail-biting victories against Southampton, Spurs, and Fulham. They’ll likely need a perfect 15 out of 15 points in their last four games if they want to beat Manchester City to the title. On paper, Chelsea is their hardest team left to play, and the one they’re most likely to drop points against.

Projected Liverpool Lineup (4-3-3)

Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Lovren, Van Dijk, Robertson; Milner, Henderson, Wijnaldum; Salah, Firmino, Mané

While Joe Gomez made it to the bench against Porto midweek, it’s unlikely that Klopp will throw him in for his first game back since December against Chelsea. Most likely, it’ll be Dejan Lovren again.

Some rumours have Sadio Mané missing out on tomorrow’s match after hurting his thumb. However, unless the appendage has actually fallen off, I doubt that much would keep Klopp from playing him.

Klopp loves the so-called Brexit midfield during the big games, so love it or hate it, there’s a good chance that’s what we see him go with on Sunday. Of course, there’s no denying Fabinho’s talent, and Naby Keita has scored in Liverpool’s last two games, so perhaps we see one of those two coming in instead.

Chelsea, on the other hand, have a full squad to choose from, including Hazard, who was rested during Chelsea’s midweek Europe League game.

What the Managers Had to Say

Jurgen Klopp: “We will take 13 players this time, and two will play only against Eden! We have to make sure he can’t shine. Stop passes to him, react better than other teams did. When he has the ball, already too late. Read the game, read the passes. 1v1 you can’t defend him.”

Maurizio Sarri: “I think it’s [the Hillsborough anniversary] really a very good opportunity for our fans. I didn’t want to speak about the video because, as I said, I didn’t see it, so it’s not right in my opinion to speak about something you don’t know. But for our supporters it’s a great opportunity. I’m sure that 99 per cent of our fans will have a very great day in Liverpool.”

The two key starters might miss out tomorrow from minor knocks.

Liverpool have slowly been working their way back into full fitness since the midseason injury crisis that saw Fabinho playing as a center back, and Jordan Henderson deployed at right back. There are a few long-term injuries still unlikely to feature, notably Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Joe Gomez, but for the most part the squad is in good health.

However, two Reds might miss tomorrow’s clash against Chelsea—Sadio Mane and Georginio Wijnaldum.

“Sadio fell on his thumb and didn’t train yesterday,” manager Jurgen Klopp explained in his pre-match press conference. “He should be okay today.

“Gini has a bit of a back problem but will train today.”

Yeah, yeah. Sounds like mind games to me, Kloppo.

As the season has progressed, Klopp has become more and more cryptic about the health of his squad, as well as potential selections. He even name-dropped Alberto Moreno ahead of Porto as a possible replacement for the suspended Andy Robertson (we love you Albi, but you’re no James Milner).

Wijnaldum was rested midweek against Porto, and will very likely feature if fit. Klopp loves him a Gini-Hendo-Milly midfield against a big opponent.

And of course Mane is going to play, probably with a wrapped hand, reminiscent of Luis Suarez.

It’s hard to overstate the importance of this showdown with Chelsea tomorrow. The Reds are long overdue for a home win over the London side, and it couldn’t come at a more pivotal point in the season. Klopp will want all hands (thumbs, backs, etc) on deck for this one. And the players will no doubt be looking to play through any minor knocks in order to get on the pitch.
