The Liverpool boss commended his side’s grit in grinding out the result and maintaining the Reds’ title challenge .

What a needlessly stressful game. Liverpool beat relegation-destined Fulham 2-1 to return the top of the Premier League but needed an 81st-minute error from Cottagers goalkeeper, Sergio Rico to do so.

The on-fire Sadio Mané scored his 11th goal in 11 games to open the scoring before former Red, Ryan Babel capitalized on a defensive mixup to draw level late (narrative!) to ratchet the hearts of Liverpool supporters into their mouths. Thankfully, substitute James Milner slotted in a penalty for the final margin but it all summed up to a labored performance against the worst defense in Europe’s top-five leagues.

Jürgen Klopp had noted his side had only been able to train once in the build up following their massive Champions League victory over Bayern Munich on Wednesday, noting in his post-match comments that the lack of pitch time showed:

“We started really well and did a lot of good things but lost the rhythm a bit. I am not the most experienced manager and I have similar problems after Champions League games,” Klopp told Sky Sports.

“First half a bit rusty. Second half we could have finished it off and then it is clear at 1-0 if you don’t kill it off that can happen. Babel was there that is how football is. They deserved a goal but we deserved three points. A brilliant afternoon I have to say.”

While that last bit is probably a stretch, it is true that at this point in the season, it is only the result that matters as the Reds head into the final international break ahead of Manchester City in the table by two points but having played a game more. It makes for a nervy run-in with only seven games remaining, but the German manager reiterated his full confidence in his side:

“I am not in any doubt about my players’ nerves. It is about intensity. We go for perfection but it is rare that you get it. Burnley, Munich, Fulham—you have to adapt,” Klopp continued citing recent grind-it-out results his side have secured. “People will say we need to be more convincing, but we are at the start of a development, not the end.”

That was a bit terrible but thankfully Liverpool come out on top from their visit to Craven Cottage.

Fulham 1 - 2 Liverpool

Pre-Match: After Adam Lallana’s performances the past couple weeks, his inclusion in the midfield is met with more excitement this time - especially with the knowledge that Jordan Henderson is out with that ankle injury. Also Virgil van Dijk is the captain today so I guess add that to your narrative.

Here we go! Things are off to a steady start so here’s hoping Liverpool find their legs sooner rather than later.

Ryan Babel’s hair is something else, isn’t it?

Fulham have had a couple decent chances in the first ten minutes, which is enough to really make sure you’re awake for this match, but otherwise it’s been basically elaborate keep away led by the Reds.

Salah trying to get one too many touches in when he had a clear shot on goal after a gorgeous pinged ball. He’s just been giving defenders too much time to catch up with him and it’s Not Great. He’s probably feeling the pressure of not scoring, but that was a perfect chance.

GOAL! Super Sadio Mane makes the breakthrough for the Reds after a dummy from Roberto Firmino!

There hasn’t been a whole lot else to write about and we’re 36 minutes in, so sorry. There’s been lots of passing and Fulham player that looked about 15 just skied the ball into the stands. Fulham have also been packing practically their whole team into the box so that says more about them than us? I’m reaching here.

Fabinho picks up a yellow for what looks like a late challenge from one angle and then not even two minutes later another Fulham player falls into him to make it look worse so I guess that’s how this game is going to go.

There isn’t exactly anything in this setup that isn’t working so no changes are about to be made, but this was not exactly the most enjoyable of first halves.

I can’t even apologize for not knowing any Fulham players except for Ryan Babel, whoops.

Halftime: Going into the second half with a 1-0 lead isn’t bad but you know what else isn’t bad? Ending the game with more than that. Come on Reds.

Yup, no changes starting in the second half, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

Bobby and Sadio both had the chance to make it two in the span of a couple minutes but couldn’t get the control they would’ve wanted of the ball so we’re all left wanting but their confidence is going for it is definitely going to help us in this second half.

Only in England could the first half of the match be sunny and making everyone sweat and then the second half encourage popped collars to shield from the rain.

Liverpool look like they’re trying to speed up the game now that they’ve spent 45 minutes dragging them through the mud, and Fulham definitely can’t keep up.

Hahahahahah Fulham get a goal but it’s offside, by the whole entire team.

Adam Lallana just blocked a Fulham shot literally with his face, Mohamed Salah tracked back THE ENTIRE WAY to make sure that someone was on Ryan Babel and Alisson thankfully saved that comedy of errors to maintain the scoreline and honestly I didn’t need any of that stress.

Klopp makes his first change, taking off Lallana and Bobby for Divock Origi and James Milner which is interesting but seriously does Shaqiri have to sacrifice a goat to get back into the squad?

Goal. It had to be Ryan Babel scoring against us, with Alisson making a poor decision in how to clear it and leaving his goal open.

Come on Liverpool, we’ve got slightly less than twenty minutes to pull a win out of this and we NEED A WIN. We need a good response.

PENALTY! The Fulham keeper tries to take down Mane after a missed shot and THANKFULLY OUR PENALTY KING IS ON THE PITCH. It’s almost like fate.

GOAL! James Fucking Milner converts from the spot to put Liverpool ahead and almost single handedly save our title challenge, honestly. We got lucky to get that penalty but SO WORTH IT.

UGH ALMOST. Mane wins the ball and sets up Salah perfectly only for him to shoot it right at the keeper. He’s wanted a goal SO BAD this whole match, it’s almost painful to not see him get one.

Three minutes of added time for Liverpool to hopefully find one more goal so that we can all go enjoy our St. Paddy’s days in our own ways and not miserably drinking for our title run.

Daniel Sturridge comes on for literally a minute but I’ll take it. I’LL TAKE IT.

Final Whistle: WE DID IT AND OUR TITLE CHALLENGE IS INTACT. LIV’POOL TOP OF THE LEAGUE!

Last time we met up with Fulham it ended pretty heavenly for Liverpool, so here’s hoping we can keep it up. Although now Fulham have picked up a former Red in Ryan Babel and fortunately taken Lazar Markovic off our hands, it still remains to be seen how that’s turning out for them (not great, by the looks of the table). The Reds will also be without Jordan Henderson going into Sunday but thankfully it’s the last match up before an international break and some Reds will get a welcome rest before the last run up to the end of the season.

Fulham vs Liverpool

|Sunday, March 17, 2019 |
Premier League | Craven Cottage
2:15PM GMT/10:15AM EST

With Manchester City playing this weekend in the FA Cup, Liverpool have a chance to get a bit of psychological advantage over their title race rivals by going two points clear of them. They will, of course, have played one more game, but it would be nice to force City to give chase once again. Playing against relegation fodder Fulham should be a relatively easy way to rack up another three points, even at Craven Cottage, but it’s hard to predict anything when every game is so important.

Liverpool will be without Jordan Henderson, who hurt his ankle early on in Liverpool’s Champions League match against Bayern Munich. They’ll also likely be without Naby Keïta as well. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain appears to be healing well, but won’t be in contention to play until April. Worryingly, there have also been some reports the most in-form Reds player, Sadio Mané, did not participate in training on Friday, so it’s possible that Jürgen Klopp will be without his goal-scoring machine on Sunday.

This feels like another game for Adam Lallana to get a start, and after his impressive performance against Burnley, it would be hard to deny him. In fact, it’s likely we’ll see Klopp choose the exact same midfield set-up in London.

Fulham have only managed to earn a startling 17 points this season, putting them firmly into 19th place and looking down the barrel of another drop to the Championship next season. Caretaker manager Scott Parker was brought on at the beginning of this month to staunch the bleeding, and beating Liverpool appears to be their last chance for survival. Expect a vicious battle by a desperate team in front of a baying crowd at Craven Cottage. Everyone spare a few good thoughts for the continued, non-damaged statuses of all the ankles and knees of Liverpool players.

Projected Liverpool Lineup (4-3-3)

Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Lallana, Fabinho, Wijnaldum; Salah, Firmino, Mané

As mentioned earlier, expect Klopp to roll out the same midfield three that we saw dominate against Burnley. With Henderson injured and Lallana looking a bit more like the early Klopp-era version of himself, it won’t be a surprise to see the two besties once again switching places.

Gonna rub by good luck charm and hope that Mané is, in fact, still fit and ready to take on Fulham, but wouldn’t be half-surprised to see Xherdan Shaqiri there instead.

Alfie Mawson and Marcus Bettinelli remain out of contention for Fulham. On the other hand, Parker could have Andre Schurrle back after he was sidelined due to illness.

Scott Parker: “We have some very good footballers and we need to start getting the best out of them. The attitudes and standards are rising on a daily basis. They have a chance at the weekend to prove how good they are.”

The boss discusses Liverpool’s next test against Fulham on Sunday.

When Liverpool step foot onto the pitch at Craven Cottage on Sunday, it will be with the knowledge that a win will put them back on the front foot in the title race. With Manchester City playing this weekend in the FA Cup, the Reds can overtake their competition, however briefly, to gain the psychological advantage heading into the tail end of the league season.

After successfully beating the German giants Bayern Munich away at the Allianz Arena to gain a spot in the Champions League quarter-finals, turning around to play relegation-stricken Fulham will prove to have its own challenges. In his pre-game press conference, Jürgen Klopp discussed the Reds’ next opponent.

“I know my boys now three-and-a-half years and I would say it is tricky in itself because it’s Fulham,” Klopp admitted. “I know what you probably expect but we know about that and it’s nothing to do with the Champions League game on Wednesday. It is just a very important game for us.

“We don’t think about the situation in the table or whatever, we are only focused on our situation. But we know how difficult it is – we only have to take our game against Fulham at home: we need a genius moment from Ali, Trent and Mo to win that game.”

When Fulham visited Anfield back in November, there was a suspect call involving the would-be Fulham opener being flagged offside, right before Alisson played in Salah on the other end to score. It wasn’t the Reds’ best performance, but it got the job done, and contained some impressive individual performances, as the boss alluded to, including an inch-perfect first touch cross from Andy Robertson to assist Xherdan Shaqiri on Liverpool’s second.

“It is difficult,” Klopp continued, “but we have to see it as an opportunity because it is the next game we play and a very important one. Fulham has a difficult season obviously, but since Scott [Parker] is in you can see the change, it is really kind of a breath of fresh air. They lost the two games against Chelsea, which is a difficult one for all teams in the league obviously, and Leicester with a new manager there. But they were pretty impressive. That’s all in our books, that’s all we know of that and now we have to make sure that we are really spot on from the first second and hopefully we can win that game.”
