The Brazilian thinks the problem is that Liverpool’s players have become too intent on playing through the middle.

According to Fabinho, Liverpool’s problems over the past month don’t have anything to do with the pressure of being in a title race. Rather they’re the result of opponents adjusting to counter this Liverpool side’s threat—and their inability, so far, to adjust.

“We have confidence,” Fabinho insisted when speaking to ESPNFC. “We enjoyed a brilliant December, which was almost perfect, but now we have had this dip. It is difficult to explain why this has happened. I believe that now teams who play against us sit very deep.

“We need to do things a little differently and maybe we aren’t doing this. Often, we want to go through the middle and it is difficult against physically strong and defensive teams. We need to find solutions and in these past few games we haven’t.”

That Liverpool were looking to work through the middle was clear against West Ham. And just as clear was that it wasn’t working to break West Ham down. It’s especially confounding given some of the past success this side has had working the wide areas.

Earlier in the season, Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold provided width and telling crosses from the flanks, creating chances and helping to keep their opponents honest. Now, that isn’t happening and Liverpool’s opponents are packing in.

It seems a simple issue, Liverpool’s players falling back on a collective desire to attack the middle of the pitch and in doing so making it easier for their opponents. The question now, then, is if that really is all it is—and if so how quickly they can fix it.

“We know our quality and we know that we can give more,” Fabinho added. “If we do it, with our quality, we will continue at the top. But I’m talking and talking is always a little easier, so we have to try to put it into practice. Personally, I am not worried.

“But we know that in the next game we have to give much more. Beating Bournemouth is important to continue with a three-point gap at the top of the table. Now we only look at the next game and that is against Bournemouth.”

The left back asks if Manchester City were showing nerves in losses to Palace, Leicester, and Newcastle.

Liverpool. A title race. Nerves. Dropped points. Andy Robertson rejects your narrative—the left back simply isn’t interested in it—pointing instead to Manchester City’s dropped points over the past six weeks and the lack of any such talk.

“Did anyone say that when City picked up no points against Palace and Leicester?” was his response when asked if, with two draws in their last two games, the Reds are starting to feel the pressure of the title race. “I don’t think they did.

“It’s no different for us. People talk about pressure because we’ve not been in this position, but it’s February. Nerves aren’t showing in the changing room, it’s just two poor results and poor performances. It happens during a long season.”

Over the last ten games, City have dropped 12 points. Over the same period, Liverpool have dropped seven in the league. The difference, of course, is that as Robertson says, Liverpool haven’t been in this position before—and City have.

Still, as poor as Liverpool looked at times on Monday night against West Ham. And as poor as they looked at times against Leicester and even in their win over Crystal Palace. As poor as they’ve looked, they’re still top of the table.

City will likely go ahead on goal differential mid-week after facing Everton, but that match will give Liverpool a game in hand. They will still control their own destiny. They just have to get back to playing like they were up until the end of December.

“We might look back on it as a good point, but we don’t know that right now,” Robertson added. “We just need to get back to playing the better football we can but it’s nothing to do with nerves.”

Liverpool’s 2019 struggles continue as the Reds drop another pair of important points.

West Ham 1 - 1 Liverpool

West Ham: Antonio 28’
Liverpool: Mané 22’

With Manchester City dismantling Arsenal on Sunday, the pressure was on Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool to get a result away at West Ham, but — as against Leicester in midweek — the Reds were unable to get out of first gear, looking off the pace and dropping another two points in the ever tightening title race.

A return to fullback duty for James Milner and a surprise start for Adam Lallana — his fourth in the league since the start of last season — raised a few eyebrows, as did the absence of Georginio Wijnaldum and Jordan Henderson from the matchday squad, but Klopp’s side contained enough firepower that Mauricio Pellegrini’s West Ham should be a surmountable obstacle.

The Hammers had clearly watched their visitors’ previous outing, however, and took a page from Leicester City, harrying their opposition at every opportunity and looking to create chances on the break. In the third minute, Chicharito latched onto a Mark Noble pass in the box at the end of a quick break, but the Mexican’s effort slipped just past Alisson’s far post.

The Reds poured forward and looked in the ascendancy, but the pressure never amounted to anything of note, and in the tenth minute, another warning shot was loosed, this time through a long-range Aaron Cresswell effort that missed the target by inches. Chicharito struck from range once more five minutes later, this time forcing Alisson into a save, before a deflected pass from Keïta at the other end fell to Roberto Firmino, but the Brazilian’s tame effort was easily collected by an untroubled Lukasz Fabianski.

Halfway through the frame, the Reds took the lead through a slice of horrific refereeing. Lallana looked to have left it too late as he dribbled down the flank and belatedly released the ball to Milner, but the linesman failed to take note of the former City man’s offside position and Milner picked out Sadio Mane in the area. The Senegalese attacker turned on a dime and swung his left leg at the ball, burying it in the far corner with his third goal in three games.

A sweeping attacking move minutes later nearly saw the Reds break through again, as Mané and Mohamed Salah combined, finding Keïta with a cutback, who in turn backheeled the ball to a streaking Andrew Robertson, but the Scot’s cross was cut out at the last second.

Some sloppy possession play saw the Reds give up a soft free kick outside their own box around the half hour mark, and a clever pass down the channel found Michail Antonio, who equalised with a neat finish in off the far post.

The rest of the half was a frustrating one for the Reds, as they failed to create clear cut openings, while their hosts tormented them with well-prepared set pieces that made the high Liverpool line look extremely perilous. Declan Rice should have put the Hammers in front two minutes from time, but somehow put his point blank header over the bar.

The Reds offered up a rare set piece threat of their own at the death, but Mané’s header was straight at Fabianski.

Just like against Leicester in midweek, the expectation was that Liverpool would come flying out of the gates in the second half, and just like against Leicester, they sputtered. Mohamed Salah created a few opening for himself, but both shots were sent straight at the waiting Fabianski, and despite their copious possession, the visitors were unable to generate quality chances.

Mark Noble nearly put the hosts in front fifteen minutes from time, as he collected the ball from a Felipe Anderson handball in the Reds box, but the West Ham captain blazed the effort over the bar.

Despite struggling for the entirety of the half, the visitors nearly won it at the death through another linesman mistake, as Naby Keïta drove forward and chipped the ball to an offsides Divock Origi, but the ball wouldn’t sit up for the Belgian, and his mis-hit effort was no challenge for the goalkeeper.

Six games into 2019, Liverpool have only managed two wins — both by one goal to bottom-half sides — and have seen their lead at the top of the table cut to three points. The attack — Sadio Mané notwithstanding — is sputtering, while the historic defensive record has begun to crack as second- and third-string solutions have been introduced.

Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth are next, coming off their 4-0 thumping of Chelsea, and if Liverpool are to avoid ramping up the pressure on themselves, a convincing win before the Champions League knockouts begin is sorely needed.

Not what we wanted to see tonight.

Well, that was disappointing.

A fairly turgid Liverpool saw Sadio Mané’s early goal cancelled out at the London Stadium, with West Ham earning a fair point against Jürgen Klopp’s side.

It’s not a result the manager finds himself disagreeing with.

“It was a tough game”, Klopp told BBC Sport. “You saw around the set-piece, we knew about the routine but when we trained we had three other players in the team.

”Apparently our goal was offside and maybe the referee knew that in the second half.

”It’s a point and it’s a fair point.

”Probably all the reports are already written without me saying anything, I didn’t see anything about pressure that you can ask in the next few questions.

”We struggled most with the set-pieces.

”We had ups and downs. At the end we were up again. Now we take the point and carry on.

”We lost balls in different moments. It’s a deep defending side and we have to cope with that and create.”

Virgil van Dijk was in much the same mood, claiming that “It’s tough but they were decent and defended well”, though ultimately, “It could have been a lot better.

”It is what it is. We have to keep going. That [free-kicks] are their strength, they practice on it a lot. When you have a back four who don’t change it’s maybe a bit easier. But we have enough quality to fill it.

”What can we do? We take it game by game. We’re still top of the league. You need to enjoy the pressure. You can also be playing for nothing. We’re still in the race. We go again.”

Look, there’s no sugar coating this. It’s two points dropped. It’s a blow to our title credentials and a poor performance to match. All we can hope is that the team can shake it off and get back to winning ways soon.

After second consecutive disappointing draw, we want you to rate Liverpool’s players and choose your man of the match.

Outbattled in the first half and unable to make up for it in the second, Liverpool stumble to their second consecutive 1-1 draw against midtable opposition, as second-place Manchester City close the gap to three points.

Now let us know how you saw it. Hitting the up arrow is a vote to move the player up the list—or to help keep them on top. Hitting down is a vote to push that player closer to the bottom. It’s half man of the match poll and half power ranking, and we want to use it to find out who you think played well after each Liverpool match and, at the other end, who you’d maybe like to see given the next game off.

At the end of the month we’ll go through the results of that month’s polls and vote The Liverpool Offside’s player of the month and, come next May, those monthly results will help to determine your TLO player of the season for 2018-19. Anyone visiting on Google AMP who wish to vote will have to navigate to the front page and re-enter the story to access a non-AMP version of it.

Pre-match Thought: I’m not typically a “let’s freak-out about the line-up” kind of guy, but tonight’s line-up is a bit disconcerting. Jordan Henderson and Dejan Lovren are out because of slight knocks picked up in training, and Gini Wijnaldum is nursing a sore knee. Of course, James Milner is back from serving his one-match suspension, filling in again for the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold. The upshot of all of this is that the midfield three will be Fabinho (yay), Naby Keita (please come good soon?!), and Adam Lallana (sigh). Anyway, there are three points to be had tonight, so let’s go get them.

Alisson’s in hot pink, everything is going to be OK. Though, I’m unreasonably upset we didn’t trot out in the grey kits with red socks.

Lallana wastes no time with his first midfield give-away. And West Ham wastes no time giving Liverpool supporters heart attacks, flashing a shot just wide of the post from a good position inside the box.

Keita nearly with the assist of the season with a long chip over the top for Salah. However it’s a hair too long, and is cleared by the West Ham keeper.

It’s early going, but so far Liverpool’s midfield is far too easy to play through, and West Ham have nearly taken advantage several times. Liverpool could already be trailing with better finishing by the home side.

Firmino creates Liverpool’s first real chance of the night, latching onto a loose ball and driving into the box. However, his weak left-footed effort cannot beat Fabianski.

GOAL! LALLANA! DID SOMETHING GOOD! It looked like he had Cruyff turned himself into a dead end, but he some how managed to pick out (a VERY offside) Milner, who squared it to Mane in the box, who scored with a signature falling-down-while-shooting left-footed shot.

Goal. Oof. A smartly taken free kick leaves Liverpool flat-footed. Keita lost his marker, and Alisson could only watch helplessly as Antonio banged his shot in off the post.

West Ham are killing us with set plays. They nearly scored again, but thankfully Rice’s free header goes just over the cross bar.

The linesman is having a damned nightmare. Yeah, we benefitted once with the goal, but he also missed a clear corner for us and wrongly called offside on Salah.

Halftime Thought: It would be really nice if we snapped out of this mid-season malaise. Sure, we’re not helped by approximately 67 injuries in defense and midfield, but we’re not creating much going forward either. Liverpool are lucky to go into the break tied. Hopefully Klopp can sort things out in the second half.

Giving away a free kick and a corner in the first two minutes was not the way I wanted to open this half.

An hour gone and Liverpool remain both shaky at the back and completely toothless up top.

We have a Xherdan Shaqiri sighting! Please do to West Ham United what you did against Manchester United (which just feels weird to write). Lallana makes way.

West Ham get away with a foul whilst dispossessing Shaq, then nearly score after handling in the box. That would have been just about perfect from this bang-up officiating crew.

And now Divock Origi is coming on. Please do to West Ham United what you did against Everton. Man this season is weird. Bobby, who has been pretty crap by his lofty standards, makes way.

As I see Andy Carroll coming on, I take back what I said before about the perfect West Ham winning goal. Surely it has to be on a craptastic day like today.

Final Whistle Thought: Thank fuck that’s over. This injury crisis has finally gotten to these Reds. Hopefully we can get a few of these players back in the next game or two and kick on.

The West Ham manager says his first priority is his current club but doing a favour for his old one would be nice, too.

Manuel Pellegrini won Manchester City a title and had the fifth-highest win percentage of any manager in Premier League history when he was unceremoniously dispatched in order to make way for Pep Guardiola to take charge in 2016.

As such, one might expect the current West Ham manager to harbour some degree of enmity towards his former employers. Pellegrini, though, says that along with getting the result for West Ham, he wants to do his old club a favour.

“If we win, I will be very happy for our club first,” he said ahead of his side’s tie against league leaders Liverpool. “After that, if we can give a hand to Manchester City—it’s not our problem but of course I am a fan of Manchester City.”

City closed the gap to Liverpool to two with their victory over Arsenal on Sunday and with the league season now at its two-thirds mark, ending the round there instead of with it back to five would be significant for their title chances.

For Liverpool, on the other hand, it’s a chance to re-stretch their lead to five and show that they can hold their nerve despite playing second this round against an opponent that, on paper at least, they appear clear favourites against.

And last but not least, for Pellegrini and West Ham, no matter any fondness for City the only real concern can be a chance for them to push on into the top half of the league table as the season nears the final stretch.

In the last four matches the Reds have outscored the Hammers 16-2, including the 4-0 win at Anfield on opening day. While Manuel Pellegrini’s side has improved since that first clash, Liverpool will still be favorites to walk out winners tonight. The weather shouldn’t be an issue tonight, but referee Kevin Friend might be, so let’s take the decision out of his hands, shall we?
