Roy Hodgson gets the welcome back he’s always deserved. The dominant performance leaves Liverpool needing just two more points to clinch the title.

Liverpool 4 - 0 Crystal Palace

Reds: Alexander-Arnold 23’, Salah 44’, Fabinho 55’, Mané 69’
Roys: N/A

Pre-Match

Liverpool fans collectively breathed a sigh of relief when Kloppo rolled out our strongest XI for tonight’s match. Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson, and Georginio Wijnaldum all returned to the starting line-up. The Reds want those three points tonight, which would bring them tantalizingly close to their long-awaited Premier League title.

First Half

Robbo takes all of ten seconds to make his presence known. He wins the ball in the Palace half and then absolutely bulldozes an opposing defender. Welcome back!

It is all one-way traffic in the opening stages, with the visitors hardly getting a kick of the ball in the opening ten minutes. The Reds are showing more attacking ambition in this opening salvo than they did at any stage against the Blues. Salah and Robbo are already showing the attacking quality and intent that we desperately missed last time out.

With fifteen minutes gone, Roy Hodgson is forced into a change, with Wilfried Zaha pulling up short with a knock. While we don’t wish injuries on anyway, that’s a dangerous attacker we won’t miss running at our defense.

GOAL! Virgil van Dijk wins a free kick in a dangerous spot, about 25 yards from goal. Trent Alexander-Arnold steps up and curls it over the wall and into the top corner. Fantastic free kick, Hennessey had no chance. 1-0.

A moment later Liverpool nearly double their lead. A Jordan Henderson volley (!) hits the post, and Van Dijk cannot turn the ball home in the goal line scramble. Unlucky!

Martin Atkinson seems to have turned penalties off for this match. The Reds have been denied three decent penalty claims in short order, including what looked for all the world like a handball.

GOAL!! And what a goal it was! Fabinho picks the ball up near the center circle, beats a man, and hits Salah in stride with an inch-perfect chip over the top. Salah chests down and finishes calmly with his favored left boot.

Second Half

It was a truly dominant first half. Palace managed just two shots, both from outside the box, and both off target. If anything, the 2-0 scoreline flatters the visitors.

Aaaand Liverpool nearly add to their lead within the first minute. A low Andy Robertson cross is flashed across the face of goal, but Salah is just a half-step away from poking it home.

GOAL!!! In a day of spectacular Liverpool goals, this might be the best. Robertson lays it off to Fabinho about 30 yards from goal. The Brazilian takes a touch, looks up, and puts his laces through it. Just like with his goal against City, it was rifled into the back of the net and the keeper had no chance.

With a little more than an hour gone, Klopp makes his first change, bringing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on for Jordan Henderson.

GOAL!!!! Another great team goal! Salah plays Sadio Mané through on goal, and Sadio—who hasn’t had many chances today—coolly slots it low, beating the keeper to the far post.

Klopp makes two more changes after the last goal: Trent makes way for Neco Williams and Takumi Minamino comes on for Bobby.

Naby Keita and Harvey Elliott are the last subs off the bench. Elliott replaces Robbo (did he draw the fullback short straw?) and Keita comes on for Mané.

Final Thoughts

That was as complete of a performance as we’ve seen all season from Liverpool. The Reds were dominant on both sides of the ball, and easily could have scored more. Two points is all that separates Liverpool from their first title in 30 years.

Palace come to town off the back of a 2-0 win away to Bournemouth, and sit comfortably mid-table. Well done, Roy.

The league-leaders stopped history from repeating itself in thriller

Set piece concessions, late goals and sucker punches on the counter. Like that ex you never quite got over, Crystal Palace brought the worst out of Liverpool in an attempt to derail yet another title challenge.

Five years removed from the smash-and-grab 3-3 draw in this same fixture that effectively ended their 2014 Premier League title run, this time Jürgen Klopp’s squad displayed their newfound resilience to squeak past their forever bogey team by a margin of 4-3.

Two goals in extra time from both sides made for a heart-pounding ending to an already nerve-wracking game for Liverpool fans as the Reds came from behind, took the lead, lost it, regained it again then had their backs to the wall down to 10 men at the very end following a deserved James Milner sending off.

“We had to stay positive,” Klopp admitted in his post-match interview. “Being one down is not a massive blow, we just needed to win the second half and did what we had to do. ‘It’s a massive relief. We knew for different reasons the game would be difficult.

“Crystal Palace traditionally do well against Liverpool and with the physicality it was clear it would be like the first half was.”T

The 4-3 victory sees Liverpool move seven points clear of second-placed Manchester City, who travel to Huddersfield Town on Sunday.

“We tried to control the game but we were not patient enough,” the Reds manager added. “They didn’t come out of their half so we were trying to play in really small spaces. They had their counter attack still and that’s how they got their set pieces.

“I think it’s a foul on Virgil van Dijk, they always block heavily but then they go and score the goal for 2-2.

“We got lucky for 3-2 and with all the set pieces they’re still a threat so it stayed interesting until the end. The result is massive, we have 60 points now it’s crazy, it’s an important number.

“I’m really proud, a few things happened that we don’t really need, we’re a bit short now on players but we have a few days and need to use the time now for recovery.”

Regardless of how they were won, the three points, as they say, are all that matters. The Reds squad heads off to Dubai for a mini break before returning in 11 days time to welcome Leicester City to Anfield again in league action.

Please respect our privacy while we take a moment to recover from that match by stress eating.

Liverpool hosted Roy Hodgson’s Crystal Palace at Anfield hoping to maintain their advantage over the chasing pack. Despite being in control for much of the first half, Liverpool never truly made the visitors’ goalkeeper work very hard, and the hosts surrendered the advantage following an incisive and opportunistic Crystal Palace counterattack.

The Reds seized the lead quickly in the second half, showing much more purpose and aggression, via goals from Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino. But Palace soon levelled from a corner, Tompkins heading home. It was looking like Palace might represent a huge stumbling block for Liverpool’s title challenge, as they have in the past.

And then . . . all hell broke loose. Salah was able to notch Liverpool’s third following an error from Speroni. James Milner got himself sent off, Sadio Mané got a fourth for the hosts and Palace ruined everyone’s nerves by getting a third with minutes to go in injury time. Fortunately for the Reds, that’s how it stayed.

PRE-MATCH: Matip returns to the line-up after his injury woes, and as expected, Trent isn’t used. Keita also gets a rare opportunity in the starting line-up. Hopefully he can make this count.

Liverpool have started the first five minutes very aggressively. Milner does some clever movement to create the first big opportunity for Liverpool. Unfortunately, it falls to Matip, who forces a save, but you can’t help but wish it was Firmino or Salah whose feet it had fallen to.

Firmino does a bit of slick footwork to get a shot off outside of the box that sails over the bar. Very Coutinho-esque.

Speroni taking his sweet time with every goal kick and throw less than 20 minutes into this game.

Liverpool have been playing well, but 25 minutes in and they haven’t found a way to score.

James Milner is such a player.

goal - 34’ Andros Townsend - After it being all Liverpool, Crystal Palace beat the Liverpool press and get the first goal of the game on a fast break.

HALFTIME: That sucked, but we’ve got a whole half to make things right.

GOALLLLLLLLLL!!!!!! Salah 47’ - Liverpool were not playing around when they came out for the second half. In no time at all, Salah gets a beautiful goal on the volley to level to score. That’s what Mo Salah thinks about your booing.

GOAAAAAALLLLLLLLLL!!!!! Firmino 52’ - Beautiful Bobby gets a slight deflection on a shot inside the 18 yard box, but who cares? It’s a goal, and Liverpool are back in front. Firmino celebrates with fellow Brazilian Fabinho.

Yiiiikkes, Palace nearly get in AGAIN on the break, and it came down to some last ditch defending and a bit of luck to keep it out.

goal - Tomkins 65’ - The simplest of headers from a corner. Maybe the worst example of defending that we’ve seen from Liverpool this season.

GOALLLLLLLLLLL! Salah 74’ - Salah gets the cheekiest of tap-ins when Milner’s cross is dealt with poorly by Speroni and Salah steamrolled in to get it into the back of the net.

I hate playing against Crystal Palace.

Fabinho goes off injured in the 87th minute, replaced by Adam Lallana. That’ll get Liverpool stomachs turning after the Brazilian’s excellent performances lately.

Red card - James Milner sees red for a second yellow, which means Liverpool will be down to 10 men for the last few minutes of this match. That’s Liverpool’s first red card this season. Looks like Milner will be getting a very extended break, since he’s now set to miss the next match on January 30th against Leicester City.

Five added minutes to this game, because the Premier League loves to cause me pain.

GOOOOOALLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!! Mané 90+2’ - An emphatic finish from Mane. Robertson does well to keep a ball in play and get it to Mané. He then uses his incredible speed to beat two defenders and get it into the far corner to finish Palace off.

goal - Meyer 90+3’ - What the hell is this game??? END THE GAME, THANK YOU.

FINAL: THANK GOD.

Liverpool fans received a nice little present today as Jurgen Klopp let it slip in his presser that Trent Alexander-Arnold might be in contention for action as early as this weekend.

They say the world changes fast. One minute, your infant daughter is crawling and being a bit of a scamp. The next, she’s walking and is climbing on everything and OHMYGODWHYISEVERYTHINGINTHISHOMEATHREAT?!

Maybe that’s just my experience but even those of us following Liverpool FC can admit at things can change in a blink of an eye. In fact, while the past 8 seasons for me may have, in moments, felt a bit like a drudgery (insert “it’s been 84 years” gif), the relative turnaround of this club from being on the brink of administration in the Autumn of 2010 to 4 points clear of Manchester City at the top of the table in the Winter of 2019 is quite the achievement.

And even that pales in comparison to the seemingly miraculous turnaround of young Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The vaunted right back picked up a knock ahead of the club’s match against Brighton Hove-Albion. Despite looking uncomfortable, the player convinced the coach and staff that he was fine to play and went on to put in a decent shift over the full 90 minutes. After the match, though, came the startling news that scans revealed ligament damage that could put TAA out for up to 6 weeks. Coming on the heels of the controversial decision to let Nathaniel Clyne, the only senior-level back-up to TAA on the squad, leave on loan, this was a moment of anxiety among many Reds fans sensing that old familiar feeling of the other shoe falling just as Liverpool look primed to put both hands on their best title challenge in a decade.

Well, all of that can be put to rest, it seems, as Jurgen Klopp’s pre-match press conference has now revealed that TAA might be back sooner than expected. In fact, Klopp has indicated that Trent, along with Georginio Wijnaldum, who also picked up a knock ahead of the Brighton match, might be available for this weekends tilt against Crystal Palace:

“Gini and Trent, we will decide day by day. It’s of course not cool. For both, it will be really, really close for tomorrow. I don’t want to close any doors before anybody tells me I have to.”

So. Maybe TAA received some sort of transfusion involving Wolverine blood? Cause, that is quite the turnaround from potential missing all of February to back as early as tomorrow. Either way, this is cause for celebration among us anxious Reds. Here’s hoping that Trent’s knock is indeed not serious and that he can make a full and speedy recovery.

Liverpool looking to extend their unblemished record at Anfield when they play Crystal Palace on Saturday.

LIVERPOOL VS CRYSTAL PALACE

| Saturday, January 19th |
Premier League | Anfield
3:00 PM GMT /10:00 AM EST

Saturday’s kick-off against Crystal Palace is another opportunity for Liverpool to show their tremendous progress under Jürgen Klopp. In recent seasons-gone-by the Reds often came up short against the strugglers in the Premier League table. Teams that were content to sit back and defend had proven difficult for Liverpool to break down. Winnable matches often predictability ended with dropped points due to a lack of composure, talent, or ideas.

Last season, Klopp demonstrated unequivocally that he his the right manager for Liverpool’s ambitions. This season has been even more impressive. With Alisson in goal and Joe Gomez joining Virgil van Dijk in defense, Liverpool’s start in August was exceptional. The balance in the squad has been a clear issue for several years. But now there are great players and leaders all over the pitch. The mental side of the team is stronger than it’s been in at least a decade.

Still, it’s Crystal Palace and an entire day from the first whistle my hands are already sweaty.

Roy Hodgson returns yet again to Anfield on Saturday and perhaps that's enough said about him. Palace sit in 14th place in the league, just four points above the relegation zone. The Eagles have only won six matches this season but, interestingly, one of those wins was against Manchester City. At the Etihad.

Palace will be hopeful that they can repeat that miraculous outcome against the current league leaders but Liverpool’s unbeaten run at home stretches back as far as the eye can see. Apart from potentially missing Trent Alexander-Arnold, Klopp will field a strong side at Anfield.

Projected Liverpool Lineup (4-3-3)

Alisson; Milner, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Keita, Fabinho, Henderson; Salah, Firmino, Mané

James Milner is a likely candidate to fill in for Trent if the Liverpool right-back doesn’t pass a last minute fitness test. Gini Wijnaldum could also miss out due to a minor injury but Klopp has other midfielders that can do the job against Palace. Naby Keita needs minutes in order find his rhythm, just as Fabinho did. This could be a good match to give the Guinean the start in an attacking role with Fabinho and Jordan Henderson anchoring the center.

Hodgson could be forced to start his third string goalkeeper against Liverpool. First-choice, Vicente Guaita, was replaced by Wayne Hennessey in Palace’s loss to Wolverhampton last weekend because of a calf injury. Then Hennessey went and got himself an issue with his thigh. So the doors might be wide open for Julian Speroni to step back into he limelight.

Speroni has been at Crystal Palace nearly his entire career and knows what’s what. But at 39, the Argentine could have some trouble against the attacking blizzard of Liverpool’s front three.

Sadio Mané alone has scored six goals against Palace in his time and if he gets another on Saturday it would be a fourth consecutive match where he’s put one passed a Palace keeper. I’m sorry, Speroni.

Liverpool need to win every match to keep up their four-point distance from Manchester City. And unfortunately, there aren’t any easy games in the league. Palace have plenty of attacking threats in their squad and Liverpool’s defense will need to be just as turned on as the midfield and attack.

Palace will have their moments on the counter attack, but the real question is, can Liverpool break apart a stubborn Hodgson bus. I think they can. And I think they will. But I also think about Roy Hodgson’s darkness and how it permeates the air and I worry, you know?

What the Managers Had to Say

Jürgen Klopp: “Was it Palace when I felt lonely? Now it’s completely different. We have reached a nice level. We’ve used that atmosphere.”

Roy Hodgson: “(Against Man City) We scored good goals and defended well. I would think that’s the type of task we should prepare for again.”

The Officials

Referee: Jonathan Moss Assistants: Marc Perry, Andy Halliday Fourth official: Andre Marriner
