Dejan Lovren was in the mood to celebrate the team’s performance against Brighton.

The Premier League season is over, but Liverpool’s isn’t. Not yet. There’s still the small matter of the Champions League final in Kyiv. But whatever happens there, thanks to a convincing victory over Brighton yesterday, the season has been a success.

Those three points ensured the Reds will be involved in next season’s edition of Europe’s top cup competition, and that was always key for this team, this season, in order to set the stage for them to push for even more in the next year or two.

“Every year it’s getting more difficult to get into the top four,” defender Dejan Lovren noted after the match. “We showed our quality again. We had it similar last season in the last game, we needed a win [and] we played brilliant football and had many chances.

“We did it. It was brilliant and the most important thing is that we won and we are in the Champions League again next year, because everyone deserves that—the fans and us. Everyone is happy. It was a great team performance.”

After a week to recover after a difficult run in the league, with the focus on getting to the final clearly taking a toll on a talented but thin squad, Liverpool looked back to their best again on the weekend. Now, more rest and preparation. And Kyiv and Real Madrid.

Beyond that, for many of the players, the World Cup will beckon while the club’s focus will turn to making this into a squad that not only can compete with the best in England in Europe, but has the strength in depth to do so week in and week out.

“We have a squad that can compare with every team in the world,” Lovren added of a side that has impressed a great many this season. “We showed it in the Champions League—Porto, Manchester City and Roma in the first game. It’s the team.”

It’s a good team. And thanks to another top four finish and their upcoming Champions League final, it’s a team that can only get better in the coming months.

The record Premier League goal scorer promised improvement while Dominic Solanke celebrated his debut senior goal.

Champions League qualification, a Golden Boot, a league record and a couple of debut goals. With the pressure on, Liverpool romped to a 4-0 win over Brighton on the final matchday of the season to break a three-match winless streak and end the domestic campaign with a flourish.

One of the celebrants on the day was debut goal scorer, Dominic Solanke, who, after starting the preseason with such promise, had struggled this season to get off the mark in the senior side. The 20-year-old managed to break his duck at the final time of asking however, firing a first time strike off the crossbar early in the second half.

“Amazing, especially to do it here in front of our fans,” the ecstatic Solanke said after the match. “I’ve been dreaming about scoring. I had to wait a while, which was quite annoying for me.

"It’s always hard when you’re not scoring. You get chances here and there and it doesn’t quite go for you."

The Reds also managed to stave off a challenge to their Champions League position from fifth-place Chelsea, who lost 3-0 to Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle, to secure back-to-back seasons in Europe’s premier competition for the first time since 2010.

However the big story on the day was the newly-crowned Premier League Player of the Season, Mohamed Salah, who scored to take the Golden Boot despite a late push by three-time winner Harry Kane. In doing so, the dynamic Egyptian took his tally on the season to a Premier League record of 32 to cap off a magical first domestic campaign at Liverpool.

"It’s special to break the record here," Salah said upon accepting the award.

With his season still to be extended with a Champions League final in two weeks and the summer’s World Cup, the question was asked whether the goal-happy forward’s dream season will be a one-off, flash-in-the-pan.

However, Salah was confident that this was just the beginning “I am trying to improve every year so I am very happy. I will [improve next year] don’t worry.

“The Golden Boot is very special. But it’s in my mind to help the team. I’m very proud.

”I will do my best to win the Golden Boot again, 100%.”

Big surprise, but Kevin Friend is not our friend. BUT WHO CARES BECAUSE WE’RE STILL IN THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE!!!!

Liverpool 4 Salah 26’, Lovren 40’, Solanke 53’, Robertson 85’
Brighton 0

Pre-Match Thought: I don’t want to say that lineup is weird but... It’s cool, we’re cool, we only need this one point to ensure Champions League football next year - barring a win in the final - and all the work is worth it. This season has been full of it’s twists and turns and it’s wild to think it’s almost over. Thankfully Brighton have already secured Premier League football next year so there’s not life or death on the line.

Here we go! Liverpool are pushed to a corner early on, just to make sure we’re all alive. Nothing comes of it, naturally, but you know.

HEY LOOK. Those new kits are pretty snazzy - especially if you’ve got time to maintain a footballer’s body, and look like a schoolboy at the same time. (Or don’t have boobs).

There’s been a couple chances in these first few minutes, with Jordan Henderson sending a rocket just barely over the bar and Dominic Solanke falling over in the box.

Two handball shouts in two minutes. If I were a Brighton player, I’d probably say “ouch, my hand,” right about now. Kevin Friend not doing a whole lot to better the perception of English refs in the world today.

Cool, anyone else would’ve gotten that penalty call but because it’s us and because it’s Mo, we’re denied just over fifteen minutes. Absolutely ATROCIOUS refereeing so far.

GOAL! PERFECTLY, FROM MOHAMED SALAH TO BREAK THE RECORD! Mo has officially scored the most goals in a 38 game Premier League season and put Liverpool on top, finally, in the 26th minute.

ALMOST! Sadio Mane was clear on goal but the Brighton ‘keeper came out just in time to intercept, and Salah almost had the rebound. Too many touches, not enough clinical decision-making.

Wow. Mane completely off around 35 minutes, wasting a backheel pass to sky it worse than Hendo did earlier.

It’s absurd we don’t have like four now, with at least two of them for penalties, but there’s still a whole other half to play. Too bad we can’t get another ref in for that.

If it’s been said before, it’s been said a million times but man. Roberto Firmino is pretty good, guys.

GOAL! DEJAN LOVREN REENACTING HIS DORTMUND STUNNER after receiving a gift of an assist from Andy Robertson!

It’s nice to see Liverpool leading despite every official attempt to keep us from it.

Halftime: Can we just call it now? Keep all these results and finish the season with Chelsea and Tottenham losing? Because I’d quite like that. If everything holds, Liverpool are guaranteed a top four spot!

We’re back! No changes at the half, because we’ve gotten through pretty much unscathed.

It’s pretty wild what a week of rest and training could do. Imagine what we’re gonna do with TWO WEEKS OF REST AND TRAINING.

FINALLY! DOMINIC SOLANKE GETS HIS FIRST, BREAKING WHATEVER CURSE A WITCH PUT ON HIM!

Leave it to Liverpool to really pull it out on the last day of everything. I guess all that talk of this being “the first final” of the next couple weeks really worked.

Things are getting really exciting but let’s be real, the most exciting thing is that we’re still winning this thing so far. There’s been a couple clear chances missed but WHO CARES WE’RE STILL IN THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE. FOR NOW.

Meanwhile, Harry Kane is still crying into last year’s Golden Boot before giving it to Salah later.

HEY LOOK A WILD ADAM LALLANA PUTTING HIS SHIRT ON AND GETTING READY TO COME OUT. Man did I miss that face and those feet. He comes on for Sadio Mane at the 73rd minute!

It’s the end of the season so I’m gonna say it. I want a Hendo goal. I want it here and I want it bad. I know he doesn’t care but I want it and we share a name. That has to count for something.

Second and third substitutions sees Bobby Firmino come off for Danny Ings and Ben Woodburn! That’s it for our Egyptian King and Best Brazilian, until the Champions League final.

GOAL!!! ANDY ROBERTSON GETS HIS FIRST AND NEVER AT A BETTER TIME!!! Next best thing to a Hendo goal as far as I’m concerned.

FINAL: WE DID IT! WE’RE STAYING IN THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE! SALAH BROKE THE RECORD! WHAT A SEASON! BRING ON REAL MADRID!

With Liverpool on the brink of finishing in the top four of the Premier League, Jürgen Klopp has a special message for all of us

In just a few hours, the 2017-18 Premier League season will come to an end, as all 20 clubs play their final fixture, number 38. Our Liverpool Reds will be sporting a different look today and give us a preview of next season’s kit, which has retained its retro style and the deep red of the current one.

But of course, today is about much more than just new clothes. The Mighty Redmen look to finish in the top four of the PL for the second consecutive season when they take on the Seagulls of Brighton Hove Albion, who have already guaranteed that their maiden PL season would not be their only one. All three teams (Brighton, Huddersfield and Newcastle) who came up from the Championship last season are safe and will be back in August 2018, while West Brom and Stoke have already been relegated, with Swansea teetering on the brink.

Liverpool should not expect a walk in the park (or at Anfield) today and Jürgen Klopp would have reiterated that throughout this past week. Despite Brighton already guaranteeing their league safety, it will be the first time that the majority of their first team have played at Anfield, and it is an occasion to be grasped. Complacency is not an option and with our first team squad members having played several more matches than our opposition, today will indeed be testing, as well as the last one, before our date with destiny at the Champions League final in Kiev, Ukraine on 26 May 2018. We look to be without a few of our players today, but our 12th man will be out in full force along with all of us watching the match around the world – so, whether it’s Sunday morning, afternoon or, if you’re in Australia, midnight; let us rally behind our Reds and ensure that they go all the way today and get those three points!

Klopp penned his thoughts about today’s match, what lies ahead and had a special message for all of us in the latest edition of This Is Anfield and here’s what he had to say:

As much as we respect Brighton, we come into the game with confidence and with belief that we can finish our season in the best way possible. Belief has been central to so many of the positive things we have done this season. Belief and confidence are completely different to arrogance and complacency. We have to value and recognise our strengths and then execute the plan that plays to them. We have been pushed to the limit in recent weeks with the intensity of what we have been doing. This is not an excuse – it is information, it is a fact.
We have lost important players to injuries through bad luck and the knock-on effect has meant more physical and mental pressure on the lads who have to keep going and keep going. But I say ‘no excuse’ because this intensity is what we want. It’s intense because it matters. Also, ahead of today we have had a full seven days to prepare and be ready and this undoubtedly will help us in our approach.
I said after Chelsea – and it has been repeated by the players – that today is a cup final and it is. And that’s not to add unnecessary pressure, it’s just to highlight the opportunity. Today is about opportunity. A Champions League place for next season and all that comes with it is within our grasp if we want to take it.
Like any cup final, it will not be given or presented to us. We have to go and do our job, all of us. But in a season where the competition in the Premier League has been of the highest quality ever and the intensity of the competition the highest ever, we can achieve one of our major objectives by winning today. That really is the start and end of any team talk, I can tell you.

Finally, I wish to thank our supporters for everything they have given us since August. It’s almost easy to forget now that we started this campaign by going to Hoffenheim, so our journey has been incredibly intense from moment one. This has been a journey shared by our supporters and, unlike us in the team, their travel, accommodation and tickets are not laid on for them.
The players talk a lot about their admiration for the supporters because many of their own family and friends share the experiences of our fans. They share the journey times, the delays, the cost and sacrifice of time to prioritise supporting this great club. I love that from our captain to the youngest player in the squad our boys recognise that representing these supporters is a massive privilege and I love that there is a shared appreciation in this moment of each other.

Players and supporters unified and together. Thank you for the amazing support this season and I hope that there are at least two more great memories for us to share before it is time for summer.

Let’s get behind Jürgen and our Reds to help ensure that our collective hope becomes a reality.

In true Liverpool fashion, despite every clear effort to be better this year, the Reds are in a do or die position to finish in the coveted top four tier of the league. While they did well to maintain a spot throughout the season, a couple of draws and a loss towards the end did enough to trip up our efforts. Thankfully, Brighton have already secured their position in the Premier League for next season, so the hopes are that they won’t be trying too hard to trip us up. Liverpool only need one point to secure Champions League football next year, thanks also to Spurs and Chelsea slip ups, so this might even be an easy afternoon for all involved - despite the assertion that it’s the “first final” that they participate in before the big show in Kiev.

Liverpool has pulled a Liverpool and left qualification for the top four until the very last game of the season, forcing Klopp to play his strongest team before the Champions League final. They have two weeks between this game and the final, but with Liverpool’s threadbare team, the concern isn’t fatigue but injury.

So let’s do figure out the possibilities. Liverpool currently sit at 72 points for this season, while Chelsea are behind them with 70 points, thanks to a draw against Huddersfield midweek. Liverpool’s goal difference will be impossible for Chelsea to overtake. Therefore, Liverpool will drop out of the top four only if they lose and Chelsea win. A draw is enough for Liverpool to secure Champions League football for next season, assuming that Chelsea don’t beat Newcastle by 15 goals.

It’s a good bet that the Reds can get it across the line, especially at Anfield and after a full week’s rest for the players, but nails will still be bitten to the quick until the final whistle anyway. Brighton have only won two games on the road this season, and Liverpool are unbeaten at home. But Liverpool do Liverpool things and always make life interesting.

Making things more difficult is news that Sadio Mané may be an injury concern for Klopp. The winger is said to have picked up a knock against Chelsea and has missed several training sessions this week. A decision will have to be made regarding his fitness and whether it’s worth the risk for Klopp to play him in this one with an eye towards the final.

Projected Liverpool Lineup (4-3-3)

Let’s be optimistic and say that Mané has passed a fitness test for this clash. Otherwise, Klopp should be expected to play his best starting XI for this match.

Liverpool will be missing (deep breath): Joel Matip, Emre Can, Joe Gomez, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Adam Lallana has a chance to make it on the bench for this one, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Brighton and Hove Albion will be missing Steve Sidwell and Izzy Brown, but are otherwise at full strength.

What the Managers Had to Say

Jurgen Klopp: “You want to be really focused. The season now for most of the team in the league is a nice time but for us it is work. All the awards around are really deserved but hopefully the last one was yesterday and now it is about playing the game on Sunday.”

Chris Hughton: “We’ve tried to enjoy the season as much as we can. I have been able to enjoy it on the whole, apart from the first few weeks we haven’t been in the bottom three. The last week is the best for me because this is where we wanted to be.”

But can the Egyptian make his, and our, dreams come true?

If offered, many Liverpool fans would take the most boring of boring 0-0 draws tomorrow against Brighton & Hove Albion. Such a result would be more than enough to ensure Champions League football next season, regardless of whether Agent Rafa can do us a favor.

However, Mohamed Salah is not like you or me. He would not be satisfied with a point from a scoreless draw. He wants goals. He wants the all-time Premier League goal scoring record all to his lonesome, and he wants to make a run at Ian Rush’s all-time Liverpool single season tally of 43.

“You are talking about legends, every one of them scored many goals for many years,” Salah said in an interview at the Football Writers’ Association awards.

“I just want to break the record and we’ll see about after.”

As for the elephant in the room, the possibility of lifting a Champions League trophy, that idea was beyond his wildest dreams as a kid. But like us Liverpool fans, he’s dreaming now.

“I can’t say I dreamed of playing in the Champions League final [when I was young] because when you are a kid you can’t see the future.

“My dream was to be a professional. I sacrificed a lot when I was young, even until now. I wanted to play at a big club, that’s it.

“But every year your dreams become bigger and bigger and bigger. My dream the last two or three years is to play in the final of the Champions League, in fact not to play, but to win it.”

One thing seems clear with two massive games left on the schedule: if Mo’s dreams come true, so will ours.

Liverpool’s hope to clinch a Top 4 spot just took a slight blow.

The thing about unexpected news is that it’s, well, unexpected. So, you’re sometimes just hanging out, at a BBQ, or on Twitter, when you’re beset by news that your apartment has been flooded. Late on Friday, Liverpool twitter was at their proverbial BBQ when James Pearce decided to wreck things with news that Sadio Mane may not make it onto the pitch for Liverpool Football Club’s first final against Brighton & Hove Albion.

And just like that, someone decided to drop raisins in the potato salad and overcook the carne asada. Calm BBQ over. Commence panic.

According to Jurgen Klopp, this injury is one that looks to have been picked up during last week’s match against Chelsea and not an aggravation of Mané’s previous injury. When asked about it, the gaffer sounded ominous:

“We will see. It is not the same injury. It’s a fresh problem.”

It would be an understatement to say that this is not a good development. Or, as Klopp might say, that this is not too cool. But especially in light of the strong run of results before Liverpool’s late-season slouch towards the season, this is a bit calamitous. It looked that Mané had adjusted quite well to a new role in the absence of Coutinho, finding new ways to contribute while also still chipping in with goals.

More, he clearly seemed to be liking his football as can be seen by the loads of smiles and the goofy gifs of him copying Roberto Firmino’s goal celebrations. Things, for all intents and purposes, were going swimmingly.

Sadio or no, the boys have work to do. Get a point and we’re in next year’s CL. That’s the task. Hopefully, Mané will be available come Sunday.
