With a miserable loss in the books, we want you to rate Liverpool’s players and choose your man of the match.

After a defeat in the league to Swansea, this was meant to be Liverpool’s chance to bounce back. Instead, they fell further, losing 3-2 to West Bromwich Albion despite a late push to draw level. That late push was too little too late, though, not enough to overcome their earlier mistakes from a defence and midfield that struggled both on and off the ball, with Emre Can in particular standing out with his worst performance of the season.

Now let us know how you saw it. Hitting the thumbs up button is a vote to move the player up the list—or to help keep them on top. Hitting thumbs down is a vote to push that player closer to the bottom. It’s half man of the match poll and half power ranking, and we want to use it to find out who you think played well after each Liverpool match and, at the other end, who you’d maybe like to see given the next game off.

At the end of the month we’ll go through the results of the month’s polls and vote The Liverpool Offside’s player of the month and, come next May, those monthly results will help to determine your TLO player of the season for 2016-17. Those visiting on Google AMP who wish to vote will have to navigate to the front page and re-enter the story to access the non-AMP version of it.

VAR, VAR, and VAR-y VAR-VAR as Liverpool bomb out of the 4th round of the FA Cup after losing to West Brom.

Liverpool 2 Firmino 5’, Salah 78’ West Brom 3 Rodriguez 6’, 11’, Matip (OG) 45+2’

PRE-MATCH: As expected, Klopp has fielded a very strong side to take on West Brom. Big news is that Alberto Moreno has returned to the side after his injury spell.

Liverpool start off strong, attacking and pressing, with Mané seeing plenty of the ball in these opening stages.

GOAL!! 5’ - Firmino - An error in judgment leads to Jonny Evans allowing the ball to run past him and get picked up by a speedy Mohamed Salah. Salah’s shot is blocked, but Firmino is first to the rebound and lofts it in over the keeper’s head.

goal - 6’ - Rodriguez - Less than a minute later, West Brom make it level on the other end. Rodriguez skates around the defense and slots an excellent strike past Mignolet.

goal - 11’ - Rodriguez - Jay Rodriguez makes it a brace in just over 10 minutes. What in the hell is going on at the back for Liverpool?

Good lord, what am I watching? Our defense is a mess, captain Emre Can looks terrible. Every man in red on the pitch needs to calm the hell down.

West Brom have had a goal disallowed thanks to VAR. That’s an interesting way to make history for Liverpool. They got very, very lucky.

And only a few minutes later, Andre Marriner, the video assisted referee, awards Liverpool a penalty that Craig Pawson would have otherwise ignored. Firmino promptly smashes it against the bar. I feel like I can’t even remember the last time Liverpool scored one.

This is wild, man.

Only four minutes of added time. I think some kinks need to be ironed out with this system. But overall, I’m for it.

goal - Matip OG 45+2’ - I feel like I’m drunk watching this game. Whaaaat is going on? How have Liverpool not scored like five goals? How are they behind by two right now? How is there only four minutes of added time? How is anything happening the way that it is?

HALFTIME: I need a drink. I don’t know, man. What do you think of VAR?

Nearly two minutes into the second half and Liverpool once again escape further disaster when a goal is called offside for West Brom. Mignolet is not successfully making a case for a return to the number one position. His botched clearance attempt is painful to watch.

Can, Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Mané all came off for the English power trio of James Milner, Jordan Henderson, and Danny Ings. At least we get to avoid seeing Can go off with a red card. Lordy me, this game is a farce.

I’m getting some wine.

GOAL!! 78’ - Salah - It takes Mo Salah to get Liverpool back into this game. After several half chances, Salah takes advantage of a lucky deflection of an Alexander-Arnold cross off of Firmino that sends the ball right to his feet. He slides the ball into the corner for Liverpool’s second of the game.

FINAL: Liverpool did not deserve to win that game. The midfield was useless, the defense a mess. Klopp has got three days to sort it out.

Their challengers in the fourth round are West Brom, who travel to Anfield to take on the Reds.
Klopp hopes for a “special atmosphere” as the Reds hope to progress to the Fifth Round of the FA Cup

During his pre-West Brom press conference earlier today, Jürgen Klopp expressed his excitement at the fact that Liverpool’s FA Cup Fourth Round tie was taking place on a Saturday night, and especially the fact that it was taking place at home.

If Liverpool win, it will mark only the fourth time that the club has progressed to the fifth round in the last nine attempts.

Klopp had this to say;

I like night games and I think Saturday night is a night on which people in general don’t go too early to their beds. They want to go out in Liverpool afterwards, which is another good thing to do. I think it’s a good time to play football, to be honest. Much better than 12 o’clock – I am hungry at 12, but not at 7.45pm! I like it and hope people like it as well. It’s a floodlight game and that’s very good. It’s very important that we create a special atmosphere.

For this, we need a special atmosphere. The biggest difference in Germany between a cup game and normal league game is that there will be a winner after the game, but in England it’s slightly different because we have the opportunity to play it again. But it’s a cup game and an important competition for us – a very important competition – so we really want to go through to the next round, so for this we need to perform.

The full press conference can be watched here.

I am hopeful that our mighty Redmen are up for the challenge tomorrow night and that they go all out and do exactly that...Perform!

After an unexpected and woeful defeat away at Swansea on Monday night, Liverpool look to not only redeem themselves but should also be aiming to win the club’s first trophy in six years. Having exited the FA Cup at this stage in the last two seasons, Liverpool do have the home advantage in this match. An emphatic win to take us into the last 16 would erase the Swansea loss from our minds and put us in the high spirits we have been lacking as we edge closer to the end of the January transfer window with no new signings in sight.

The Monday defeat ended Liverpool’s run of five consecutive victories and 18 match unbeaten streak in all competitions. The Reds are yet to lose a home game this season, so this will be a difficult game for the Baggies. However, West Brom still has some hope in this game considering their recent resurgence. The Baggies are unbeaten in their last three competitive games as they ended their winless streak in 21 games across all competitions. They are however, poor away from home, having lost seven out of their last 12 games, while Liverpool have won eight out of their last 12 home games.

While Daniel Sturridge and Danny Ings have yet to get some proper game time this season, I’m sure we all do hope that Klopp puts out our strongest 11 for the game.

West Brom are without James Morrison and Nacer Chadli but Alan Pardew will likely make several changes as the currently 19th placed side take on Manchester City on Wednesday night in their Premier League clash.

The Liverpool striker will have to make the most of his limited minutes on the pitch if he’s to rise through the squad ranks.

If you looked close enough towards the end of the Liverpool match against Swansea City you might have been gifted that rarest of sightings: a glimpse of Danny Ings in his natural habitat in front of the opposing team’s goal.

Ings has had a rough couple of seasons under Jürgen Klopp. The striker had just welcomed his new manager to Melwood back in 2015 before promptly going out onto the training pitch and tearing his ACL.

The road to recover for the ex-Burnley striker has been long and full of motivational videos but with Ings now fit enough for selection, are we likely to see more of him on the pitch during the second half of the season?

“He’s in really good shape to be honest,” said Jürgen Klopp during today’s pre-West Bromwich Albion presser.

“He’s doing really well and the fact that we don’t give him a loan or something else shows already what our plans are for him.

“It was a very difficult time, I can imagine, for Danny. The first day when I came in he got an injury. And since then it’s been ups and downs. But meanwhile, physically, he’s completely there.

“I can’t remember the last session that Danny was not involved in. There are different reasons he didn’t play that often but he’s still a young boy with still a lot of good years to come.”

25-years-old isn’t exactly young for a striker but taking into account Danny’s Roberto Firmino levels of energy and endurance he does probably have plenty more years to offer. But game time is important and Klopp will have to manage Ings’ trajectory properly if he hopes to get anything out of him in the future. Do you keep him in the squad to train with the team and slot him in sporadically from now until May? Or could Ings benefit from a loan to a club where he would play regulary?

“Maybe if Danny could go somewhere and start the next 20 games,” pondered Klopp. “Would it be perfect for him, I’m not sure. But we cannot forget our needs.”

Translation: keep your binoculars handy for the next rare sighting.

Saturday’s announcement of the teamsheets may say a lot about the striker’s future.

Inter Milan have offered Liverpool a significant loan fee, to pay all of Daniel Sturridge’s wages, and are open to taking him permanently in the summer should he prove his fitness with them in the spring. This has added up to Liverpool signalling they are open to Sturridge’s departure.

Sturridge, though, appears unconvinced by the proposed deal, and there have been persistent reports suggesting he still prefers the idea of going to Sevilla for the remainder of the season. But with Sevilla unwilling to match Inter’s offer, that appears impossible. As a result, Sturridge may stay.

It has been widely reported that Liverpool are as happy to have Sturridge remain as to accept Inter’s offer and have at this point left it up to the player to determine his future, and with each day that passes it seems likelier the striker will remain at Anfield at least until the end of the season.

That’s the foundation for whispers today that Sturridge could be in line to start against West Brom in the FA Cup on Saturday, with rumours the striker has been lobbying Jürgen Klopp for a chance to play at least once more before the transfer window shuts next week.

The logic seems clear: impress against West Brom and, just maybe, Sturridge will have proven to Klopp he still has a role to play at Liverpool. Fail to do that, on the other hand—or perhaps see his request denied—and he’ll know a move is his only option if he wants a chance at minutes.

It all remains speculative at this stage, but the announcement of the teamsheets ahead of the match on Saturday may just give us our answer when it comes to the future of Daniel Sturridge.

The Liverpool captain is hoping to make his return to action after a month on the sidelines.

Having been missing since suffering a hamstring injury against Arsenal in December, Jordan Henderson is targeting a return to action against West Brom in the FA Cup on Saturday, though after such a lengthy layoff and with his availability still not certain a bench role seems the most likely option if he is ready to go.

Over the past week, Henderson has rejoined training with his teammates alongside Alberto Moreno, and though Moreno is still feeling some discomfort in his angle and is not expected to take part in the cup tie, Hederson is hopeful of playing according to a report from The Telegrapah’s Chris Bascombe.

For both, though, the real target could be a week later, when Liverpool take on Tottenham. Liverpool’s shock defeat against Swansea means the two sides are separated by just two points in the race for the top four—though with Spurs facing Manchester United mid-week, there will be hopes the gap is larger before kickoff.

Meanwhile, after their weekend cup tie against West Brom, Liverpool face Huddersfield Town in a game they will be favoured to win in and against an opponent that should play a slightly more open game than Swansea. It all means the top four race could look an awful lot different after next weekend.

If Spurs can get a result against United and then beat Liverpool, the Reds could find themselves out of the top four and in real trouble heading into the final stretch of the 2017-18 season. It’s equally likely, though, that a better mid-week result for Liverpool and a result against Spurs would put them in a far comfortable place.

Either way, though, the next week to ten days will be telling, and Henderson is determined to play a role in it—starting against West Brom on Saturday if he gets his way.
