A game in which Liverpool played very well, despite various shenanigans.

Liverpool’s win over Leicester felt like a narrow scrape because of the drama towards the end of the game. It wasn’t.

Liverpool played well throughout and were well worth more than the two goals they managed. Jürgen Klopp felt the side were decisive enough to earn the win.

“We had a 20-minute session to prepare for Leicester and decided to change our shape”, the Liverpool Echo report the manager as saying.

“Everyone who gets a point this season against Leicester will be a success for 95% of teams. A point against Leicester is not a catastrophe.

“In a difficult week like we had, really intense game on Wednesday when a really strong opponent like Leicester don’t have to play, we had 60 exceptional minutes.

“First half was exceptional. We put them under pressure, the energy level of the boys is incredible. The only problem we had was we only scored one goal.

“It was clear there would be a moment in the game Leicester would come up and our energy would drop.

“They came up, had more possession, when we had the ball we weren’t clear. We lost easy balls. They had their counter-attacks.

“They scored their goal and after that, it looked to me the game calmed down. They were not chasing the second. We had the bigger chances again.”

Of course, the broader picture is that Liverpool are on an incredible run of form, and Klopp had words about this as well.

“If winning eight games in a row would be easy, a whole lot of teams would have done it already,” the German added. “In this league it’s not easy. It is really difficult.

“Of course the boys have a bit of belief because they experience that, in our common past. The kind of effort they put in is exceptional.

“We respect the hard work we have to do. So far, so good but 30 games to go.

“We are not fussed by the situation, the winning streak, not really.

“We didn’t look a second like a team who had won so many games they didn’t have the desire any more to win another. We looked like a team that had never won a game before.

“The atmosphere in the stadium was brilliant at 1-1. Everything was positive in the stadium, that is just so helpful.

“It was a good performance by the whole Liverpool family but now the boys travel literally all over the world and hopefully come back healthy and we prepare for Manchester United.”

It’s getting very routine now for Liverpool. That’s another win in the bag. Onto gulp Old Trafford.

The Liverpool vice-captain commended his teammates as the Reds kept their impressive league winning streak alive.

For the third match running in all competitions, Liverpool left it late before coming up trumps once again. On this occasion, it needed a show-stopping winner in the final minute of added time for Jürgen Klopp’s Reds to beat third-placed Leicster City 2-1 to bolster their position at the top of the league table.

After big goals from Gini Wijnaldum and Mohamed Salah secured victories over Sheffield United and Red Bull Salzberg respectively in the past week, it was James Milner’s turn to step up to plate, putting a nerveless penalty past Leicester keeper Kasper Schmeichel in the 95th minute following a foul on Sadio Mané.

“We had to dig deep and find the points,” Milner told BBC Sport following the game. “The boys have done it time and time again.

“There was a few tired legs and it was about getting the result. Leicester are a very good side. We knew it was going to be tough. Now we have a break and have to hope people come back from the international break fully fit.”

You have to just concentrate and stay calm. I was just trying to concentrate. As long as you stay in the moment then you will be fine. Anytime it’s in the last minutes, it is important.”

Yet another win puts the league-leading Reds at 17 straight in the Premier League and eight points clear at the top of the table pending second-placed Manchester City’s matchup with Wolves tomorrow afternoon.

An old friend returns to Liverpool, but the Foxes leave with nothing, despite their best efforts.

Liverpool 2 - 1 Leicester City

Liverpool: Mane 40’, Milner (penalty) 90+4’
Leicester City: Maddison 80’

Pre-Match

The narrative today is all about the return of the Brendan Rodgers, bringing Jamie Vardy and the Foxes with him. Surprisingly, Leicester sit third just below Manchester City as the other top six teams continue to struggle this early on in the season, and so Leicester will be looking for a fight today (but when are they not?). After a few less than easy results, though, Liverpool are hopefully looking to make this easier on themselves.

First Half

We’re off to a lively start and Liverpool get into a chance early on, with Mohamed Salah sending it right into the arms of Kasper Schmeichel. These first ten minutes have been almost entirely Liverpool, as Leicester have struggled to get a productive touch and do anything with the ball. Trent Alexander-Arnold has another cheeky corner moment, nutmegging Ben Chilwell and getting it towards James Milner on the near post, but Milly sends it upwards and not into the net — should’ve been an easy tap in.

The Achilles heel today will literally be us not finishing our shots, as usual. We can take these chances, but if we don’t finish them it means nothing, and that’s frustrating. Trent keeps crossing it into the box and no one is there to get on it, or it goes into places no one can get to. With twenty five minutes gone, Leicester are getting more into the game, winning their first corner, that Dejan Lovren clears twice.

Sadio Mane, on the other hand, is having to make some tackles himself to win the ball back because who else is going to do it? Liverpool finally get it back towards the Leicester half and win a corner for themselves but Leicester deal with it better than the Brodge era of Liverpool would’ve done. The Reds get another shot on goal, after Wilfred Ndidi tackles a Red, allowing Sadio Mane to push forward and shoot right at Schmeichel.

Another chance comes from Trent, this time Roberto Firmino goes for it and once again sends it over the bar. Things get dicey, though, when Trent clips Youri Tielemans on the Achilles and they go to VAR to check if it should’ve been a red card. Thankfully it isn’t given, and Leicester are given a free kick outside the box that Adrian deals with handily, but Leicester were offside anyway.

GOAL! Sadio Mane scores, picking up an assist from James Milner and opening up the goal by drawing Schmeichel out and thank god. A much needed goal five minutes before the break. Jamie Vardy, on the other hand, take a cheap shot by shoulder checking Adrian as he prepares to move the ball out, but they both only get a warning.

Second Half

We’re back! No one has made any changes, and with Liverpool leading they weren’t likely to make any halftime changes. Things get started early, with Salah getting into the box and picking up a chip from Trent, but Schmeichel is able to block it quickly before the Reds doubled their lead. Once again these opening minutes have been all Liverpool, but Leicester aren’t going down without a fight.

Leicester fouls Salah just outside the box, and Liverpool win a free kick while they get a yellow card. It’s in a good position for the Reds, but Salah shoots it right at the wall and it doesn’t get anywhere on the rebound. It’s not taking a lot of work, it seems, for Liverpool to get into Leicester’s half, with two more chances taken by Mane since the free kick — one of them looking sure to go in, only to sweep by the side netting instead. Have the goals moved or changed shapes in the last week?

Liverpool’s press today has been a sight to behold. Even in the moments when things have gotten away from them, Leicester hasn’t been able to make anything of the time they’ve had with the ball. Also as of the 60 minute mark, they’ve mentioned Brendan Rodgers’ time with Liverpool about 6 times, including an obligatory slip mention (can you feel my side-eye from here).

The Reds have settled a little after the hour mark, simply taking advantage of their own control over the ball. Trent hands a nice assist to Bobby Firmino and even as he takes a minute to find the shot, it goes wide. They’re forever going to be searching for that second, and hopefully we get it before Leicester get their first. The Foxes, to their credit, have been defending well and shutting down anyone trying to get a shot off.

Leicester have remained able to be stretched out and Liverpool have done their best to take advantage, even if it hasn’t ended the way it should’ve. This game could’ve easily been like 5-0 by this point but you know, things happen. Liverpool make their first change of the game around the 78th minute, with Jordan Henderson coming on for Georginio Wijnaldum and Divock Origi replacing Bobby. Origi will definitely be looking for that second goal, and hopefully be able to get around Leicester in ways that Liverpool hadn’t been able to.

Leicester, unfortunately, find their goal, shortly after the changes are made and things are level through James Maddison. Liverpool have ten more minutes, roughly, to find the winning goal and are awarded a couple corners at the 83rd minute, but no one is able to finish it, not even Virgil Van Dijk. Even with all the set pieces the Reds have won in these last ten minutes, we can’t find that winning goal, with four minutes added to the end of the half. Salah comes off a few minutes after a nasty challenge by Hamza Choudhury, with Adam Lallana replacing him and hopefully winning us a few minutes and another goal.

PENALTY! Sadio Mane gets taken down in the box with a clumsy tackle by Leicester and while it needs to be confirmed by VAR, Mr. Reliable James Milner steps up to take it — AND SENDS IT HOME. LIVERPOOL SCORE! LIVERPOOL ARE BACK AHEAD IN THE DYING SECONDS OF THE GAME!

Final Thoughts

We got really lucky. Really really lucky with that penalty (which definitely was a penalty, but to get it that late? Lucky). We were the better team, but definitely not without it’s drama. Thank god for James Milner.

Mo Salah leads a second half rally as the Reds come from behind to beat Leicester

Liverpool 2 Salah 52’, 76’

Leicester City 1 Vardy 3’

We don’t always get advance warning of major changes in our lives. But sometimes we do. Enough notice that we are aware of some kind of dividing line between Before and After.

Today’s game is the last of the time before the Van Dijk Era. Everything from here on out, everything on the other side of 2018 and beyond, will happen in a time when Van Dijk was among us. When his presence was manifest in the fullness of time. Today, he not yet among us. We are left to await his arrival with quiet anticipation. Like Advent, but for centre halves.

But while we wait, there’s Leicester. And while it looked grim for a while, the Mighty Mighty Reds managed to pull it together enough to secure a 2-1 win and close out 2017 on a positive note.

If the yearning for VVD to pull on a Liverpool shirt and play for us now wasn’t loud before, it took on a different tenor and tone early in the game. Emre Can’s poor positioning as the #6 presented an early opportunity for the visitors, which Jamie Vardy capitalized on to give the deposed Premier League champions an early 1-0 lead.

From then Liverpool were left to chase the game— a situation which does not suit them and generally does not lead to healthy outcomes. Philippe Coutinho hit a free kick that should’ve gone in but was caught decisively by Kapser Schmeichel. Mohamed Salah had some inviting chances but squandered each one. A Sadio Mane goal was ruled offside.

I could go on like that, but the details don’t matter, ultimately. The Reds had a dismal first half, with plenty of chances and no follow-through, and went into the tunnel down 1-0. Even with fatigue, even with playing Karius, there’s no reason this team should’ve been hapless. But here we are.

The break must’ve done our boys good, though. They came out for the second half ready to work. And it didn’t take long to get their reward, with Mohamed Salah bagging the equalizer less than ten minutes into the half.

It took about 20 minutes of work and missed opportunities, but Liverpool finally got their breakthrough. Once again, Salah came to the rescue with a clever beat on his defender and a clinical finish.

Anyone who’s followed this team for more than a month could be forgiven for bracing themselves for the worst. But Liverpool hung on, sealing their come-from-behind win to close out a rollercoaster 2017.

We’ve got Burnley in two days and then the Derby next week in the FA Cup.
The Liverpool boss applauded both the Anfield crowd and his side’s spirit after coming from behind to win 2-1 over Leicester City.

Jürgen Klopp’s men overcame a shock early goal from Jamie Vardy to secure three points from a losing position for the first time season in what was a spirited and physical encounter. With record signing, Virgil Van Dijk watching from the stands, the Foxes leapt to an early start while many fans were still making their way to their seats, as Vardy capitalized on an Joël Matip error to score his fifth goal in five games against the Reds.

However, a spirited fight back and two second half goals from the irrepressible Mohamed Salah ultimately saw the hosts take home the vital three points. While 11 draws in all competitions so far has highlighted his side’s struggles to both hold onto small leads and complete comebacks, Klopp touted this close win against a troublesome opponent as an omen of good things to come:

"When we were one goal down our reaction was the best I've ever seen in this situation,” the German manager raved in his post-match interview. “The crowd were unbelievable and we needed them today to score these two goals. Mo [Salah] was fantastic with his dribbling and his vision. I couldn't ask more from him.

"Staying in the game is the real deal of football in this league but I am happy for Mo, I am happy for the team because this group is a fantastic group of players. It's a good team performance and a well-deserved win."

With a tough come-from-behind win over Leicester in the books, we want you to rate Liverpool's players and choose your man of the match.

Whatever else you might say about this game— the last of the calendar year— it’s not often we see Liverpool come back from a losing position to win. Usually it’s the opposite with us. So, let’s just appreciate that as a good way to close out 2017.

We’re going with Mohamed Salah as our pick for MOTM. His two goals were the only tallies for Liverpool, but enough to give us the win.

Now let us know how you saw it. Hitting the thumbs up button is a vote to move the player up the list—or to help keep them on top. Hitting thumbs down is a vote to push that player closer to the bottom. It's half man of the match poll and half power ranking, and we want to use it to find out who you think played well after each Liverpool match and, at the other end, who you'd maybe like to see given the next game off.

At the end of the month we'll go through the results of the month's polls and vote The Liverpool Offside’s player of the month and, come next May, those monthly results will help to determine your TLO player of the season for 2016-17. Those visiting on Google AMP who wish to vote will have to navigate to the front page and re-enter the story to access the non-AMP version of it.

This is Mo Salah’s world, we just live in it. A Salah second-half brace seals Liverpool’s victory.

Liverpool 2 Salah 50’, 76’ Leicester City 1 Vardy 3’

PRE-MATCH: Biggest team news is VVD in the crowd to watch here. Oh, and Karius starting over Mignolet, I guess.

goal - Vardy - 3’ - Was there any doubt that this would happen to the defense with VVD watching? Liverpool have 87 minutes to figure themselves out. Gotta say, this Matip/Lovren partnership isn’t my favorite.

Oh my, Liverpool is starting to attack in the minutes following the goal. I thought Salah had scored but went just wide.

Salah again, in on goal, but Maguire puts in a great sliding challenge to deny him. Mo looks up for it at least. Hopefully he’ll put one (or more!) of these away soon.

Mane has a goal disallowed for being offside. And like, super offside.

We’ve started with these long distance attempts, which I have no time for unless it’s Coutinho, and even then only under very specific circumstances.

HALFTIME: Liverpool seem to be doing that thing where they attack, attack, attack but nothing lands in the back of the net. Hopefully the next half will be better.

The second half kicks off with more Liverpool dominance leading to nothing.

GOAL!! - Salah 50’ - As soon as I say that, Liverpool finally make one of these chances count. A sexy backheel from Sadio Mané finds Mohamed Salah, who takes some wriggling, but eventually gets it on his left foot to score.

Second lovely Mané goal called offside, again rightly. Dude can’t catch a break today.

Mané has another goal disallowed, and Leicester City find themselves in a good spell. Thankfully they haven’t capitalized.

GOAL!!! Salah 76’ - Salah out-muscles and out-manuevers Harry Maguire, who has been a thorn in the Reds’ sides all day, to give Liverpool the lead and bag himself a brace.

All Liverpool goals should involve back heels.

I will never trust a one goal lead with this team, no matter how one-sided the match has been. Never.

FINAL: They pull it off! Liverpool leave 2017 on a high. See you all on the other side.

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!

So, that Mo Salah guy. He’s pretty good.

With time running down and Liverpool pushing for a lead over Leicester Cithy, the indomitable Mohamed Salah happily obliged. Having received the ball outside the box, Salah ethered his defender with a tight spin-around and dash toward goal. Once inside the 18, Salah lined up a low shot and knocked it past Kasper Schmeichel, good for his and Liverpool’s second goal on the day.

The Reds are now up 2-1 with about 10 minutes to go. Can they hang on?
