Liverpool host Southampton in matchweek six of the Premier League at Anfield this Saturday

Liverpool will look to extend their Premier League unbeaten run to six consecutive wins this weekend in what would only be the third time in their club history, when they take on Southampton in the 86th league meeting between the two clubs. The two previous times the Reds started their top tier campaign with six wins from six games they came second at the end of the 1990-91 season and won the League Championship in the 1978-79 season.

Liverpool certainly looked a cut above Paris St-Germain on Tuesday evening in their Champions League group stage clash and a second home game in the same week is likely to see them continue their winning form against the travelling Saints, who are currently in 13th place on the Premier League table.

Liverpool’s Form

After a strong start to their PL campaign with five consecutive wins, the Reds find themselves in second place on the table with a one goal difference between them and Chelsea. Liverpool have only conceded twice in the PL so far; once against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium two weeks ago and away against Spurs at Wembley Stadium last Saturday.

This Saturday’s game will mark Jürgen Klopp’s 600th League match as a manager. He began his managerial career at FSV Mainz 05 from 2001 to 2008, followed by almost six years as the manager of Borussia Dortmund which began in 2009 until he stepped down at the end of the 2014-15 German Bundesliga season and subsequently arrived at Liverpool in October 2015. Out of the 600 league games, Klopp has won 295, drawn 158 and lost 146 games.

Liverpool have kept a clean sheet in each of their last four PL games against the Saints.

Liverpool vs Southampton: Head to Head

Since the formation of the Premier League in 1992, 13 players have represented both Southampton and Liverpool with Liverpool spending a total of GBP 173 million on the purchase of Saints’ players.

The 13 players who have played for both clubs are:

Bruce Grobbelaar: Liverpool 1981 – 1994, Southampton 1994 – 1996
Mark Walters: Liverpool 1991 – 1996, Southampton 1996
Paul Jones: Southampton 1997 – 2004, Liverpool 2004 (Loan)
Jamie Redknapp: Liverpool 1991 – 2002, Southampton 2005
Peter Crouch: Southampton 2004 – 2005, Liverpool 2005 – 2008
Rickie Lambert: Southampton 2009 – 2014, Liverpool 2014 – 2015
Adam Lallana: Southampton 2000 – 2014, Liverpool 2014 – date
Dejan Lovren: Southampton 2013 – 2014, Liverpool 2015 – date
Nathaniel Clyne: Southampton 2012 – 2015, Liverpool 2015 – date
Sadio Mané: Southampton 2014 – 2016, Liverpool 2016 – date
Steven Caulker: Southampton 2015 – 2016 (Loan), Liverpool 2016 (Loan)
Virgil van Dijk: Southampton 2015 – 2018, Liverpool 2018 – date
Danny Ings: Liverpool 2015 – 2018, Southampton 2018 – date

Southampton’s Form

The Saints have only won three of their last 19 Premier League matches when they have played at Anfield. They last won there in September 2013 and have lost 10 and drawn six.

Southampton are yet to find their form under Mark Hughes, who took over from Mauricio Pellegrino on 14 March this year. Saints are the sixth PL club to be managed by Hughes, who played for five different top-flight clubs during his career. After guiding Southampton to safety last season, Hughes signed a new three-year deal on 25 May 2018.

Southampton have won one, drawn two and lost two in their PL campaign this season and are in 13th place with five points out of a possible 15.

With Liverpool having completed the double over Southampton last season, expect to see more of the same on Saturday. Both of last season’s fixtures ended without a goal from the Saints while Liverpool scored a total of five goals over the two PL legs.

Thus, with that in mind, I’m going with a conservative 3 – 0 Liverpool win.

Up the Reds!

Liverpool turns the page on a rough start to the season with a comprehensive win over Southampton

Liverpool 3 Salah 31’ 41’, Coutinho 68’

I hate the entire concept of bogey teams. I hate the idea that there could be some sides which will seemingly vex us until the sun expands and consumes everything we’ve ever known. I hate that of all the stupid superstitions I end up believing, one of them has to be this. But mostly I hate how these teams make me feel in the run-up to matchday. I hate Crystal Palace. I hated Hull for a while. Lord Almighty how I hate Chelsea.

And I’ve come to absolutely despise Southampton. I hate that we always seem to struggle to get a result against them. And I hate that a tough but mostly beatable team can come to Anfield and fill me with this kind of existential terror. I resent it, and I resent them for it. How dare they. How very dare they.

Partly due to the unease ahead of the game, partly because of the team’s awful start to the 2017-18 campaign, and partly due to the gray chill of November, I felt myself starting to despair. Fingernails were chewed. Floors were paced. Sylvia Plath poems were read. I was psyching myself up for a bad day.

And it all turned out to be for nothing, as Liverpool beat the crap out of Southampton to the tune of 3-0.

I have to say, the existential terror returned as soon as I saw the teamsheet. Lovren and Klavan. TAA back on the outside. Matip out, Lallana still not back yet. I thought we were going to get eaten alive.

The terror, thankfully, abated after kickoff. I’m not sure I would’ve preferred the interminable boredom of the opening 20 minutes instead of the terror, but that’s where I was at. Things eventually picked up— Georginio Wijnaldum forced a save from Fraser Forster, and a Philippe Coutinho free kick (which ultimately sailed into the Annie Road seats) filled me with hope for the future. But mostly the opening movements of the game left me bored and only slightly bereft.

I also couldn’t help but notice my gaze drifting towards Southampton’s backline, toward a certain Dutch defender who was acquitting himself well. If this were Twitter I’d make a “this could be us but u playin” joke. I don’t know why I do this to myself.

At the half-hour mark, though, everything changed. Mohamed Salah evidently thought it was time for his side to stop playing around and put them on top. First, with an incredible curling shot from a tough angle at distance, and then with a clever run to pick up a Philippe Coutinho throughball and get himself in alone on goal for a clean finish. This put him at nine goals through twelve Premier League games, beating Robbie Fowler’s previous record. Yup.

Mohamed Salah, world-historical babe
— ⚽️ is a Country (@FutbolsaCountry) November 18, 2017

All of a sudden the terror dissipated. The clouds broke and the sun shone brightly. (Or it would’ve, if this weren’t late November in England.) Thoughts demurred on the first fresh strawberries in spring and picking wildflowers for your best girl. Such was the change in mood for Liverpool fans. (Or at least me. It might’ve just been me, to be honest.)

Regardless, Liverpool went into halftime up 2-0 over their bogey team. If you’re looking for reasons to feel good about life, you could do much worse.

The second half began much like the first, though perhaps with a touch more bite with Liverpool and Southampton players getting in each others’ faces. With the visitors’ backs against the wall, Liverpool coming close to a third goal a couple times, and being forced to make a critical substitution before 60’ (Dusan Tadic off for Charlie Austin), I’d probably be a little testy too.

After roughly 20 minutes of near-misses and light shoving, Liverpool got the third goal they were chasing. Coutinho finished off a rebound after Roberto Firmino’s close-range shot was blocked, and for all intents and purposes, that was it. There was still nearly half an hour left to play, but both sides knew where this was going. Jurgen Klopp started pulling off his attackers for midfield reinforcements to lock things down. Southampton players started eyeing the clock, wanting nothing more than to just shower and go home.

The whistle ultimately blew for the 3-0 win and Liverpool took a much-deserved round of applause. This win in this game was important. But more important, there’s a sense that the crap start to the season might finally be behind us. Three league wins on the bounce (plus the victory over Maribor before the break to put us on the cusp of Champions League knockout round football) have put Liverpool right on the doorstep of the Top 4. Some more wins and a couple lucky breaks and we could be back where we belong.

Eventually the storm clouds break.

The Liverpool boss commended both his attack and his defense in a comprehensive 3-0 win over Southampton

The threes have it. Three straight wins in the league for Liverpool, each by a three goal margin, along with three clean sheets to make it now four wins on the bounce in all competitions. This time it was Virgil van Dijk and bogeymen, Southampton who were handily dispatched 3-0 at Anfield (with, as an aside, the wanted Dutchman acquitting himself predictably well while looking encouragingly frustrated with his woeful teammates ahead of a certain January transfer).

Sure, the Reds’ welcome form has hardly come against sides capable of offering much resistance in Huddersfield Town, Maribor, West Ham and the Saints. However, in a mirror image of the unbeaten run in August in which Liverpool’s poor play was masked by solid results, the easy November fixtures ought not take away from the balance Jürgen Klopp has now brought to the side.

“I was really happy,” the German manager effused in his post-match interview, “[Because] we have had so many different experiences so far this season.

“We played outstandingly well, for example, against Arsenal. We had one really bad game against Tottenham. All of the rest were more than OK, most of the time really good. We didn’t get the results but we’ve built on this.

“[But now], we know we can rely on our quality when we defend well.”

The lack of balance between attack and defense in addition to untimely injuries has left Klopp at times this season with a side both belabored going forward and undermanned at the back. With Dejan Lovren and young Trent Alexander-Arnold both back in the side with key center half, Joël Matip a scratch for the day and league full back starter, Joe Gomez rested after his exertions while on international duty, the defense still managed to put in a confident and front-footed showing.

“Really mature performance,” the 50-year-old said of his defense. “The two center halves played outstandingly well…it was a really good performance.”

“We could have scored more often but it was a perfect day for us."

With a strong 3-0 win over Southampton in the books, we want you to rate Liverpool's players and choose your man of the match.

This was good. So, so good. We needed a win like this— especially against the likes of Southampton— and we got it. Liverpool hardly ever looked threatened and the goals were well deserved. More wins like this, please.

We’re going with Mo Salah for our MOTM this week. His brace puts him on nine goals in twelve Premier League games, beating Robbie Fowler’s previous club record. Salah more than deserves our nod.

Now let us know how you saw it. Hitting the thumbs up button is a vote to move the player up the list—or to help keep them on top. Hitting thumbs down is a vote to push that player closer to the bottom. It's half man of the match poll and half power ranking, and we want to use it to find out who you think played well after each Liverpool match and, at the other end, who you'd maybe like to see given the next game off.

At the end of the month we'll go through the results of the month's polls and vote The Liverpool Offside’s player of the month and, come next May, those monthly results will help to determine your TLO player of the season for 2016-17. Those visiting on Google AMP who wish to vote will have to navigate to the front page and re-enter the story to access the non-AMP version of it.

Liverpool stroll to a comfortable victory thanks to excellent work by Mo Salah and Philippe Coutinho.

Liverpool 3 Salah 31’, 41’ Coutinho 67’ Southampton 0

PRE-MATCH: Matip and Lovren. Deep breaths. Here we go.

I just want Mo Salah to score six goals today. Is that too much to ask?

Almost 10 minutes in, there’s a scrap in front of the Southampton goal, with TAA and Salah both getting a foot on it, but all Liverpool get for their troubles is a corner. Still, it’s a promising start, and Salah looks desperate for it.

Lots of attacking from Liverpool, but the closest they’ve come in the first 20 minutes is a second corner that gets cleared away by van Dijk.

Gini gets a shot off, batted away by Forster. Then Coutinho gets a few chances on goal, first with his patented long distance right-footer, then with a free kick. Both sail over.

So many wasted set pieces.

GOAL!! Salah - 31’ - Mo, Mo, Mo. Lucky number 13 for the Egyptian sensation is a sweet left-footed curler from just outside the 18 yard box. Glorious. Also breaks Liverpool’s four-game scoreless streak against Southampton. That’s one Salah goal down, only five more to go.

GOAL!! Salah - 41’ - Coutinho picks out Salah’s run with a perfectly weighed throughball there. *kisses fingers* Salah makes it count, and that’s his second. Four more to go.

Lovren booked for a hard foul on van Dijk two minutes before halftime. Hiya, Narrative!

HALFTIME: I wanted a first half hat trick for Salah, but I guess I’ll just have to settle for a brace. My life is now solely dedicated to Mo Salah, by the way. I’ve decided to give up all other jobs, hobbies, and interests in my pursuit of fangirling him. Feeling pretty confident about my life choices.

We’re back. There’s 45 minutes + stoppage time for Salah to score four goals.

Boufal gets close, but Lovren just gets his body in the way, blocking the shot. Good defending there.

Liverpool attack. Firmino’s shot is deflected. Mané and Alexander-Arnold both race for the rebound. Mané gets there first, but it was probably TAA with the better angle for a shot. The ball ultimately gets put out for a Liverpool corner, which leads to nothing.

GOAL!! Coutinho - 67’ - After a fantastic attack by Liverpool, Firmino gets a shot off, which is blocked by Forster, but only as far as Coutinho, who slots it home.

Coutinho scored with his last touch of the game. He comes off for Can, followed by Mané making way for Oxlade-Chamberlain for the last 15 minutes.

Salah comes off for James Milner for the final 10 minutes. Whatever, it’s cool. Salah can get a break instead of scoring a hat trick. That’s a reasonable management decision, which is why I’m not salty about it. Sometimes players get substituted to protect their fitness. No worries. These things happen. I feel fine about it.

Firmino narrowly misses on a well-struck long distance shot that stays low, but goes just wide.

FINAL: This match was a stroll for Liverpool, and all concerns regarding the defense were unfounded, since I don’t think Southampton even had a shot on goal. Well done, boys. Liverpool have now scored 13 goals and conceded one in the last four games. Three wins in a row in the league, and there’s still Lallana and Matip to return into the squad.

Yes yes yes yes yes!!

I feel like it’s been a while since Philippe Coutinho scored a goal. I don’t remember exactly when the last one was, but it’s definitely been a few weeks at least. Good as time as any to get another one!

With time ticking down and Liverpool in control, the home side was pushing hard for a third goal to really lock things down. Just before the 70th minute, they got it.

Roberto Firmino received a threatening ball from Sadio Mane and hit a shot from close range. The shot was blocked and whizzed back out toward the edge of the box. Philippe Coutinho caught it on the rebound and one-timed a shot while Fraser Forster was still recovering from the save. The low shot nestled inside the near post outside of Forster’s reach for Liverpool’s third goal.

Coutinho was taken off immediately after the goal— a planned move, the goal just came out of nowhere— but his job was done for the day.

Literally as soon as I posted video of Mohamed Salah’s first goal, he gets his second.

With the beginnings of an attack gathering, Philippe Coutinho got the ball about 30 yards from goal. Maybe a bit more. Seeing a gap in Southampton’s defense, Coutinho hit a pass into the box.

Mohamed Salah spotted his opportunity and slipped his defender before the poor guy knew what was happening. He latched onto the ball and caught everyone off-guard, getting himself alone on goal against a panicking Fraser Forster. The finish was clean and calm.

Salah, and Liverpool, now have two goals on the day and the Reds are in a strong position heading into halftime.

I have no words

Look I’ve been beating the Mohamed Salah drum all season and I’m sure some of you are fed up.

But guys. Guys.

He’s so good.

Half an hour into what had been kind of a boring game, Salah got the ball outside the box. With the distance, the angle, and number and position of Southampton defenders, it didn’t look like a particularly tempting spot to try for goal.

Salah obviously didn’t see it that way!

He hit this just, like, inch-perfect shot that lifted over the visiting defenders and curled past Fraser Forster, sailing inside the far post and bulging the back of the net.

It’s just. He’s so good. So so good. My heart soars

Liverpool are now up 1-0 with the first half starting to wind down. The game’s not over yet by a long shot, but Reds fans undoubtedly feel much better about things now.
