Liverpool come back from a goal down and a shaky first-half performance to steal all three points at Swansea; Firmino’s header leveled the scoreline while Milner converted another penalty to secure the win.

Swansea 1 Fer 8’

Liverpool 2 Firmino 54’, Milner 84’ (pen)

If you came away from this game feeling less than chuffed, it’s okay— it’s not just you.

There’s every reason to feel good about this match. Coming from behind to win, something Liverpool haven’t always been able to do in recent seasons. Securing a fourth consecutive win. Briefly, before the 3pm games kicked off, finding themselves in 2nd.

Yet even in victory, Swansea Away leaves a vaguely unpleasant after taste. It may have been the surprisingly poor overall play in the first half, easily the worst 45 minutes the Reds have played this season. (And yes, I’m including Burnley in that.) It may have been Loris Karius’ surprisingly shaky performance, including two flubs in the second half that should’ve given Swansea at least an equalizer, if not a winner. It may have been our continued inability to defend corners. It may have been losing Adam Lallana to a non-contact injury around the 20th minute.

Whatever the particular detail is that sticks out, one could be forgiven for coming away from this game feeling like we all got away with something.

It was pretty clear early on that Liverpool weren’t going to have their best day. A lack of attacking zeal and a resignation for playing in their own half set the scene for disaster. The worst was confirmed in the 8th minute when Leroy Fer crashed the gate from a corner kick. Afterward, Swansea were rampant, showing a renewed sense of confidence that translated into an energetic pressing game. Borja González had a couple chances to add to Swansea’s lead, with Liverpool skating by on dumb luck rather than tight defending. The hosts had to content themselves with a one-goal lead at halftime, far less than what they deserved.

But as some on Twitter noted might happen, Swansea couldn’t keep it up all day. The Reds came out for the second half with renewed vigor. Their own high press clicked back into gear and the forward line started threatening. They didn’t have to wait long for their reward; less than 10 minutes into Act II, Roberto Firmino nodded home on the second ball from a blocked free kick.

The equalizer put more wind in the Reds’ sails and they probed and prodded for killshot. But Liverpool’s momentum started to stall, and for a 10 minute stretch late in the second half they were largely pinned back in their own defensive third. Some failed clearances by defenders, some suboptimal positioning, and one or two questionable decisions from Karius, and fans started to wonder if Swansea were going to regain control soon.

But Liverpool lucked out. With time running out, Firmino was tripped on the edge of the six yard box, and Michael Oliver, who had been somewhat pitiless with Liverpool up to that point, awarded a penalty. James Milner dutifully converted from the spot to give the Reds what would be the gamewinner.

Swansea, to their credit, didn’t give up the ghost. And another error from Karius nearly brought them level in stoppage time. Alas, for them, the spirit was willing but the flesh was weak. Liverpool hung on to their late lead and got out of South Wales feeling rather like they had robbed a bank.

It’s possible I’m being too hard on this team. After all, the hallmark of a strong side— one who intends to fight for a Top 4 spot, at the very least— is the ability to win even when they’re not playing especially well. And that’s exactly what they did— with the exception of Bobby Firm and maybe Philippe Coutinho and Sadio Mané, no one availed themselves particularly well, and one or two had pretty bad days. In any event, we can’t win every game in a 5-1 blowout. Days like today, when the squad are off their game and the opposition get some crazy ideas, are going to happen.

So, Liverpool got away with something. This game was a trap, and the Reds disarmed it, barely. We all head into the international break with a nice little win streak and Manchester United looming on the horizon. We can take some warmth in the result, and not look too closely at the fine print. Liverpool fans will have plenty to wring their hands over once the injury reports start rolling in.

With a somewhat shaky 2-1 victory over Swansea in the books, we want you to rate Liverpool's players and choose your man of the match.

Liverpool won the day but it could’ve easily gone against them. A dismal first half gave way to a more determined performance in the latter 45 and the Mighty Reds managed to fight back from a goal down. Our MOTM has to be Roberto Firmino; the Brazilian nodded home to level the score and later won the decisive penalty. Without him the story of today would’ve been very different.

Now let us know how you saw it. Hitting the thumbs up button is a vote to move the player up the list—or to help keep them on top. Hitting thumbs down is a vote to push that player closer to the bottom. It's half man of the match poll and half power ranking, and we want to use it to find out who you think played well after each Liverpool match and, at the other end, who you'd maybe like to see given the next game off.

At the end of the month we'll go through the results of the month's polls and vote The Liverpool Offside’s player of the month and, come next May, those monthly results will help to determine your TLO player of the season for 2016-17.

Liverpool come from behind to sneak a win against Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium.

Swansea City 1 Fer 8’
Liverpool 2 Firmino 54’, Milner 83’ (PEN)

PRE-MATCH: As expected, Klopp fields much the same starting line up, bar the fit Lovren coming in for Klavan. These 11 players would appear to be Klopp’s first choice, so it will be interesting to see them all playing together.

Swansea start off well. They’re working around Liverpool’s press better than other teams have, and they had the first good chance of the game as well, with Borja Baston just nodding his header over the crossbar.

Goal Fer 8’ - And as I write this, Fer scores on, predictably, a corner. It looked offside to me, but regardless, the goal stands, and Swansea lead. Not to rain on anyone’s parade, but Karius has now failed to save the first two shots on his goal in the league. Early days yet, of course, but he’s not making the barnstorming entrance that we’d all hoped. It will be interesting to see how the team reacts to this setback. They haven’t trailed in a game since Burnley last month.

Now Lallana has gone off injured, so that was just the 20 minutes and one goal conceded for Klopp’s preferred set up then. Looks to be Sturridge coming on, which isn’t exactly a bad replacement, all told.

That half was one to forget, yet at the same time felt uncomfortably familiar. Granted, Swansea came into this game with a point to prove, but Liverpool have been far to easy to roll over so far.

HALFTIME: Liverpool failed to register a shot on target in the first half. However, we’ve seen how clinical these players can be, so it’s certainly possible that after Klopp gives them a kick at halftime they can get something out of this game, and maybe even steal a win.

The Reds look better coming out of the gate at the restart. Mane and Sturridge combine together well, but the resulting shot is cleared.

GOAL Firmino 54’ - Coutinho takes an uninspiring free kick, but <s>his</s> Henderson’s second attempt into the box finds the head of fellow Brazilian Firmino. Someone woke up Liverpool at halftime.

Lots of good pressure from Liverpool now, as the Reds get another corner. This is the team we’ve gotten used to over the past four games. There’s still 30 minutes left for them to win this game - or concede a soft goal off of another set piece.

Swansea have regained a bit of control by the 75th minute, thanks to some smart substitutions, and Liverpool are seeing less of the ball, conceding corners and generally giving me a heart attack. Wouldn’t mind seeing Can or Origi join in.

GOAL Milner 83’ - Firmino gets tripped in the box and James Milner scores his fourth penalty in Liverpool’s seven games, becoming Liverpool’s top scorer. Penaltypool is back. Hard luck for Swansea City, though, who have once again played really well yet look set to lose.

FINAL WHISTLE: A good result to take into the international break, though that first half performance will stick in the craw a bit. I’ll also be holding my breath until I hear about Adam Lallana’s fate.

The comeback!

Liverpool were trailing Swansea City just seven minutes into their Premier League match. With seven minutes left to play James Milner turned the tables and gave Liverpool their first lead from the penalty spot:

via r/Soccer

Roberto Firmino was ran over in the box by Angel Rangel and the referee pointed to the spot to give the Reds a late penalty. James Milner, like he’s done three times already this season, comfortable deposited the spot kick past the Swansea goalkeeper to give his side the lead.

Can they hold on and get a the crucial away points?

Liverpool could end Francesco Guidolin’s reign as head coach at Swansea City with an away victory at the Liberty Stadium.

When Liverpool last faced Swansea City, an important Europa League semi-final second leg against Villarreal was merely days away. The result? Heavy rotation and a 3-1 defeat in South Wales. Jürgen Klopp fielded an admittedly young side to protect most of his senior players with a first leg deficit to overturn at Anfield four days later. That result effectively guaranteed Swansea’s Premier League status—a feather in the cap for Francesco Guidolin who was appointed in January. Five months later, matters are quite different indeed.

Without any European commitments or injuries to likely starters ahead of the international break, Jürgen Klopp will not be giving youngsters a chance for minutes as he did in May. Liverpool are in scintillating form heading into tomorrow’s game after winning a third consecutive Premier League game by battering a hapless Hull City 5-1 at Anfield, but the nagging ghost of that 2-0 defeat to Burnley will not be laid to rest without consistency against struggling sides in the league. Swansea have some good players, but with the persistent doubts surrounding the future of head coach Francesco Guidolin, this is a game Liverpool should win.

Football, of course, is full of surprises. Various modal verbs are upturned with dizzying frequency in predicting the outcome of matches, but with Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City locking horns on Sunday, there's an opportunity to close the gap on at least one of those sides before international football takes centre stage for a week or so.

For Liverpool (4-3-3):

Karius
Clyne, Matip, Lovren, Milner
Lallana, Henderson, Wijnaldum
Mané, Firmino, Coutinho

Liverpool’s only change from the previous game is expected to be Dejan Lovren coming in for Ragnar Klavan. Danny Ings is poised to return to the bench after one of Divock Origi’s feet went from good to bad. Such is life, but the young striker will be back. Mamadou Sakho is back in action after his misguided exploits on social media but is far away from a place in the first-team squad. Essentially, Liverpool are good to go and will hope to gegenpress another opponent into submission.

Swansea are hungry for points, especially considering that the Welsh side haven't snared a Premier League win since the opening day—essentially why Guidolin is under enormous pressure entering this game. Klopp may be the media darling of the moment after his appearance on Monday Night Football alongside Jamie Carragher but isn't getting carried away after an exciting start to the season. The Reds haven't kept a clean sheet in the league, which should give Swansea some encouragement despite hovering above the relegation zone after six games.

Swansea don't have too many injury concerns ahead of a chance to provide some positivity around the club. Nathan Dyer is a long-term injury concern and is out for two months with an ankle injury, and Federico Fernández's is doubtful after missing the last match with a slight groin tweak. The Swans have usually fielded one striker up front with the delightful Gylfi Sigurðsson in behind, but will desperation see Borja Bastón paired with Fernando Llorente for the first time this season?
