Having now faced Liverpool and Arsenal, Hull City captain Curtis Davies would rather face the Gunners again.

“Last week, against Arsenal, we had 10 men but it was different,” began Hull City captain Curtis Davies after his side’s 5-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday afternoon. “We kept hold of the ball. But Liverpool, with their pressing, they weren’t going to be satisfied with 3-0 or 4-0 or scoring five.

“They wanted six, seven, eight. That’s the difference. Arsenal were like, ‘We will sit, we will let them have the ball, and then we will have it for another five minutes.’ Liverpool don’t give you a chance to breathe. Arsenal are a very good passing team, but a lot of their stuff is in front of you, nice little passes.

“Liverpool have that mix of nice passes and then people who will run and run at you, and people who will beat you as well—like Mané, like Coutinho. When we went down to 10, if I’m being honest, as a Liverpool player I would have been thinking, ‘We can give them a hiding.” And they were ruthless.”

Ruthless Liverpool. It has a nice ring to it, or at least will have for Liverpool fans, who have spent far too long fearing bottom half opponents. This past week, though, a dismantling of Derby County in the EFL Cup and then Saturday’s 5-1 thumping of Hull will have many feeling downright bullish.

Liverpool are a side that has always been able to raise themselves for the big occasion. For a match against a Chelsea or Everton or Manchester United. It has been in the games everyone expects them to win where there have tended to be problems; where they have too often shown a tendency to stumble.

They headed into Saturday’s match with Hull City, though, in an aggressive mood—manager Jürgen Klopp had talked about the three points being theirs, and that the players needed to start the match angry at their opponents for even having the nerve to show up to try to take them. It seemed to work.

“When you play against a Liverpool team that is vibrant, exciting, and enjoying itself it’s tough,” added Davies. “They’re a side which literally plays with Henderson and the two centre halves, and the rest go wherever they want. It’s not ill-discipline—it’s organised. The interchanging, the good football, the passing.

“They are a very, very tough team to deal with on their game. When there is so much inter-changing you cannot put a mark on one person. It’s tough to try and get in and try and make a tackle which makes them think again because literally one second Mane will be in that hole, then Lallana, and then Coutinho.”

Next up, then, is another chance to be angry; another bottom half side that will be looking to steal Liverpool’s points. Liverpool face Swansea City before the October international break, and another performance like Saturday’s might have fans believing that this really is a new Liverpool side.

Because if Klopp has taught his team to press and attack and fight against bottom half opponents the way Liverpool have always been able to press and attack and fight against the top sides, it could be the start of a special season for the Reds—and a difficult year for anyone having to face them.

Liverpool’s midfielder turned in a MotM performance against Hull. Take another look with this every-touch compilation.

For the first few games, it wasn’t a certain thing. There were mistakes, turnovers, a tendency to hold on to the ball for too long in deep positions. For the first few games, it wasn’t certain that Adam Lallana’s move to deep in midfield—his repurposing as something of a number eight—would be a success.

It hasn’t taken long for him to put that behind him and prove any doubts unfounded, as the man who at times has looked the embodiment of Jürgen Klopp’s will on the pitch has quickly adjusted to a deeper and more central role and is excelling. He excelled again on Saturday afternoon against Hull City.

His performance earned him man of the match honours from Liverpool Offside readers and had Jürgen Klopp calling it “spectacular,” as the Englishman proved his worth both on and off the ball. His goal and two assists will be the headline for most, but just as impressive was his tireless work off the ball.

He ran, he tackled, he covered for his teammates. He knew when to push on and when to help provide cover alongside Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum in Klopp’s new-look midfield trio. Despite an advanced role, he had a 94% pass completion rate. The effort was there. So too was the end product.

After taking a few weeks to settle in a new role, Lallana has been Liverpool’s best player in September, and he’s rightly starting to be recognised for just how well he’s playing under Jürgen Klopp, a high-press manager who like Mauricio Pochettino at Southampton seems to know how to get the best out of him.

Liverpool post their most dominant performance of the season to date with a 5-1 win over 10-man Hull; Milner scored two penalties, Lallana tallied a goal and an assist, and Coutinho struck another belter.

Liverpool 5 Lallana 17’, Milner 29’ (pen) 70’ (pen), Mané 36’, Coutinho 51’
Hull City 1 Meyler 50’

This team has routinely filled me with dread over the years. Every time we’ve jumped out to a lead I would start counting down to our inevitable collapse. Every trip to the home ground of a newly-promoted side had me mentally preparing for a three-goal loss. Even in the midst of of that magical 2013-14 campaign, I went through every game gripped in terror. The latter parts of last season, when Jürgen Klopp’s influence slowly but surely started to take hold, was a bit better but not by much.

This season feels different. Two or three years ago I would’ve seen a visit from Hull and broke out in a cold sweat. This would be a game we’d lose, I thought to myself. We’d give up a goal from a corner and never recover. That would be exactly the thing we’d do. But I don’t feel that way this season. I went into this game banking on a comfortable win, and, by gum, that’s why we got.

It helps that our opposition were ripe for the picking. Hull won their first two games of the season— remarkable, considering the ongoing struggles at the club and early speculation that they didn’t have enough fit players to fill out a full 18-man teamsheet— but haven’t won since. Their 4-1 loss to Arsenal last week may have broken whatever fighting spirit they had at the start of the campaign.

If they had any of that spark left, we surely snuffed it out today. This Liverpool side are, on the whole, not a possession-minded team. It’s nice to have, surely, but our game focuses on the press and swarming the opposition’s back line. The fact that the Reds ended the game with 74% possession drives home just how rampant the home side were and how hapless the visitors.

Our trip to the market began with Adam Lallana’s elegant finish in the 17th minute. As I noted over here, he finished the game with a goal and an assist, and his day was just the latest in a string of thoroughly-impressive performances to start the campaign.

As the team settled into their groove and prodded for another opening, Anfield sprang to life in the 28th minute with a minute’s applause to honor Gerry McIver, a beloved core member of the Hillsborough Justice Campaign who passed away this summer at the age of 81.

Immediately after that tribute was paid, the game was effectively settled. Philippe Coutinho struck from near the penalty spot that would’ve gone in but for Ahmed Elmohamady’s intentional handball. The Egyptian international was shown the red card and James Milner, slowly and rather hilariously turning into one of the better fullbacks in the league, dutifully converted from the spot to double the lead.

After that, it was a matter of putting in the time and a question of how wide the margin would be. Sadio Mané added a third just six minutes later after slotting home from 16 yards and slightly off-balance. David Meyler pulled on back early in the second half because, despite the side’s comprehensive improvements, we still couldn’t defend a corner kick even if Western liberal democracy depended on it. Yet less than a minute later, before the travelling Hull fans had even finished celebrating, Coutinho hit another belter to restore margin and smother whatever faint hope these large predatory cats ever had of leaving L4 in one piece. Substitute Daniel Sturridge won a second penalty in the 71st minute and Millner got his penalty brace. And that, for the most part, was that.

I haven’t exactly relished the sense of dread I’ve had watching this team at times over the years. It was bad for my health. Most of my ambitions for this team are focused on erasing that dread. I want a Liverpool outfit that can reasonably expect to win the games they’re supposed to win, and when they don’t, it’s seen as a bizarre aberration and not the latest pratfall from the same team that surrendered the title with three goals at Selhurst Park. And I want them to go into fixtures against the big boys feeling pretty good about their chances.

That’s how I finally feel with this team. We pulled off solid (if tight) wins against Arsenal and Chelsea and comfortably beat the likes of Hull City. This is all I’ve wanted for this team, and it’s here. The sense of dread is finally starting to dissipate. And that, if nothing else, is the gift that Klopp has brought to this club.

With a dominant 5-1 win over Hull in the books, we want you to rate Liverpool's players and choose your man of the match.

Well that was fun! The Mighty Reds put in their most emphatic performance of the season to date with an absolutely savage 5-1 win over Hull City. The Klopp Press was in full effect and, the Meyler goal notwithstanding, the visitors never really looked like they were here to compete. It's legitimately hard to pick a MOTM, as the entire team was tremendous today, but my choice would be Adam Lallana—a goal and an assist topped off an overall fierce performance, which just builds on his great start to this season.

Now let us know how you saw it. Hitting the thumbs up button is a vote to move the player up the list—or to help keep them on top. Hitting thumbs down is a vote to push that player closer to the bottom. It's half man of the match poll and half power ranking, and we want to use it to find out who you think played well after each Liverpool match and, at the other end, who you'd maybe like to see given the next game off.

At the end of the month we'll go through the results of the month's polls and vote The Liverpool Offside’s player of the month and, come next May, those monthly results will help to determine your TLO player of the season for 2016-17.

First thoughts on a match that saw Liverpool destroy Hull City.

Liverpool 5 Lallana 17’, Milner 29’ (pen) 70’ (pen), Mané 36’, Coutinho 51’
Hull City 1 Meyler 50’

PRE-MATCH: No Lovren, but otherwise a really strong starting XI and bench. The team needs to win today to prove that the stinker against Burnley was an exception and not the rule when it comes to playing weaker opposition. Our own Chuck is at this game today. I believe the last two matches he attended were against Barcelona and Dortmund at home. So we can expect the Chuck Effect to be at work. Anything less than four goals scored by Liverpool will be considered a failure.

James Milner starting strong and earning the Reds their first corner. I actually have hope that Liverpool will make something out of their set pieces again. We live in exciting times.

Some great build up play in the first ten minutes from Liverpool. They nearly make something of it, but Coutinho can’t get enough on his toe poke to get the ball into the back of the net. In the last several games, we’ve seen this same slow turning of the screw as Liverpool work themselves into the game and gradually up the pressing and tempo until it’s unbearable for the opposing team.

GOAL!: Lallana 17’ - The pressure pays off, and it’s Coutinho to Lallana, whose shot was perfectly placed to sneak into the corner. The Lallana Revolution continues apace.

GOAL!: Milner 29’ (PEN) - Coutinho’s shot is blocked on the goal by Elmohamady’s hand. Elmohamady gets a red card, and Milner slots the penalty home. Oh my, the way Liverpool are pressing at the moment, Hull City are in some trouble indeed.

Mané wants in on the action. He has two chances in quick succession. One crashes into the crossbar, the other sails over the goal.

GOAL!: Mané 36’ - Third time’s the charm! Mané once again gets space in the center of the box and this time he slots it home. This gun’ get ugly.

HALFTIME: Liverpool are good again. Tell your friends. Milner is on fire. Lallana — why hello there. Coutinho is like the epicenter for all good things. Mané, Mané, Mané. Has Loris Karius even touched the ball on his debut? I wouldn’t be surprised if he sent out a few Instagrams mid-game. I want to talk about players who have been good — but literally everyone has been good. If Liverpool press Hull any harder, they’ll turn ‘em into diamonds. And Can and Sturridge still haven’t come on yet. Tell me Danny won’t want in on this action...

Goal: Meyler 50’ - Milner’s poor touch gives away a corner, which Meyler duly scores, beating Karius and sadly denying him a clean sheet.

GOAL!: Coutinho 51’ - I didn’t even finish typing the sentence above before Liverpool stormed back down the pitch and Coutinho got one of his signature belters from well outside the box. Ahhh...the Chuck Effect lives on.

Lallana off at 65’ for Daniel Sturridge — not a bad trick to have in your back pocket, all told.

GOAL!: Milner 70’ (PEN) - And as if on cue, Sturridge earns a penalty with nearly his first touch of the ball in this game. Milner beats the keeper again, and that’s five.

FINAL WHISTLE: Well, that was fun, and long may it continue. Liverpool have now scored 16 goals and picked up 13 points in their first six games of the season. Their front line looks unstoppable, and their defense is finally catching up.

Liverpool have won three in a row in all competitions, scoring nine goals along the way, and look to keep the momentum going with another victory when Hull City come to Anfield. The team has looked to be clicking since their poor performance against Burnley, but the fear is that they may not perform as well against teams that, like Hull, defend deep and are hard to break down. Loris Karius will get his first league start of his Liverpool career, and it’s possible that we’ll see Emre Can get his first start of the season after coming on as a substitute in the EFL Cup game against Derby County.
