In taking this Liverpool side to two separate cup finals in the span of seven months, Jürgen Klopp is demonstrating what a special manager he really is.

Liverpool fans have become specialists in a very particular sort of analysis over the barren years void of Premier League gold; finding the runs of form or periods of time in which the club has been the best in England. This practice is used to argue that when things go right their team is one of the very best in the land. That next year could be the one, because look at this run we went on. The inexorable truth that always accompanies these stretches of terrific play - and there have quite a few, and they've often been quite long - is that they never stretch from August till May, and thus never lead to that coveted first place

Two weeks ago, in a special post-Klopp league table, Liverpool were 4th. They've not been the best, but solidly in Champion's League contender form since the German took over. This despite some patchy league form, and some devastating late surrenders to drop points in games they've thoroughly controlled. Despite being ravaged by injury in the middle - and now latter - part of the season. Despite using 38(!) players over the course of what is going to be 63 matches in four competitions, handing first team debuts to eight teenagers this year, and putting out the youngest ever Liverpool side in Premier League history last weekend.

Granted, that has gone downhill in recent weeks with only a solitary point from the last two league matches, and this has been an oddball season if there's ever been one, but on top of coaxing solid weekly league performances - and some absolute classics - out of a young and depleted team, there's the cup finals. Two of them, now. The first since 2012, and the first European and truly elite one since all the way back in 2007. Taking a team that had three straight draws to less than stellar opposition to open its group, and that looked completely bereft of confidence and belief, past Augsburg, Manchester United, Borussia Dortmund and now Villarreal, is not normal. A pair of top European sides and just bagfuls of narrative in there. Klopp has been at the heart of performances loaded with both tactical mastery and passionate emotion.

Klopp, of course, true to his nature, doesn't want to be hear any talk of him being a catalyst for any of this. He's just part of the team. When quizzed on his directing the crowd in a chant after the match, the self-proclaimed Normal One was quick to deflect the attention:

"I heard after the game that the crowd sang my name.

"This is a good moment to say that please no one has to sing my name really.

"I am only part of the team and I love football because of being part of the team. I really love this.

"But it happened with me. I would say that it was nice in this moment."

On a night where Emre Can forcefully stated his case as quite possibly the best midfielder at the club, where Daniel Sturridge again looked the predatory match-winner we know and love, and where Roberto Firmino displayed his unique brand of Brazilian flair paired with German efficiency to devastating success, Jürgen Klopp still stood out as the most important part of the team. His mixture of tactical acumen and vehement passion makes him both the brain and the heart of this team, and his ardour further engages the fans, which contributes to the cauldronous atmosphere Anfield has produced recently.

Normal? Not at all.

A powerhouse performance from Liverpool see them turn the first-leg deficit around against an ill-disciplined Villarreal side.

Liverpool 3 Soriano (OG) 7', Sturridge 63', Lallana 81'
Villarreal 0

An early goal put Liverpool at ease and set the stage for what ended up a dominant win, as Villarreal lost their heads in the fiery Anfield atmosphere.

Jürgen Klopp went full heavy metal with his line-up, determined to cancel out Villarreal's first leg lead as quickly as possible. Daniel Sturridge played as a lone striker ahead of a attacking trident consisting of Roberto Firmino, Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana, while Emre Can returned from injury to star in the double pivot alongside captain James Milner. With Mamadou Sakho suspended, Kolo Toure joined the usual first-choice suspects of Dejan Lovren, Alberto Moreno and Nathaniel Clyne in the back four.

Despite a few early scares from the visitors - Simon Mignolet saved a Mario Gaspar effort after Soldado was allowed to chest the ball down in the Reds' box and Jonathan dos Santos blasted another effort high a minute later - Klopp got his wish. After some aggressive counterpressing in the clamorous athmosphere set the tone for what Liverpool would be looking to do, Can strode forward 60 yards and released Clyne in space down the right. The fullback's first-time cross was palmed across to Firmino, whose cross in was touched by Sturridge and then bundled into the back of the net by Bruno Soriano. Liverpool were even and on the front foot.

The Reds were aggressively harrying the visitors at every opportunity and were dominating possession. On thirteen minutes, The Real Hamez threaded a beautiful through ball into Lallana's path, but the English international sliced his shot wide of the far post. The same man served up a glorious corner ten minutes later, whizzing across the face of the goal, but no Liverpool player was able to make a connection.

Frustration seemingly got the the Villarreal players, and Victor Ruiz was the first to go in the referee's book for dissent. Soldado and Denis Suárez applied for bookings as well, with several instances of dirty play and petulance, but the Hungarian referee decided to instead caution Clyne for a clean challenge. Soldado was finally booked towards the end of the half when he cynically hacked Coutinho down from behind and the mood on the pitch got increasingly chippy. A blatant shirt pull on Lovren set Bakambu up for a shot from 12 yards, but Mignolet collected the bobbling effort as the half ended.

Villarreal came out zealously in the second half, and Lovren needed a heroic tackle to stop Bakambu from getting clear through on goal. The Reds soon reasserted themselves, though, and shots from Coutinho and Milner were saved by Alphonse Aréola. Daniel Sturridge, meanwhile, was looking mobile and menacing with the ball at his feet, but decision making let him down time and again, as he chose shots from difficult spots over playing the ball to an open team mate.

The increasingly annoying Soldado made his last impact on the match ten minutes into the half, as he purchased a cheap free kick by backing into Toure and going down like a bag of rocks upon contact, then heading the resultant set piece wide after straight-arm pushing Moreno in the back.

This would prove to be Villarreal's last threat - and indeed, shot - on Liverpool's goal, as the Reds completely took control of the match in the final thirty minutes. A Lallana and Studge counter attack ended in a corner. The aftermath of said corner saw Firmino chest the ball down outside the box and slip Sturridge in with a deft touch. Alone with the goalkeeper, Sturridge made no mistake and tucked the ball in off the near post. Body language experts across the planet will certainly debate for decades what his celebration revealed about his emotions in the moment.

Another counter saw Firmino roulette his way past Soldado, but Moreno sliced his shot wide from outside the box. A few minutes later, a late stamp on Lallana's foot saw Ruiz booked for a second time and rightfully sent off. The air went completely out of the away side and the Reds were on cruise control for the remainder of the match. Firmino and Sturridge both had chances saved, before the former skinned Mateo Musacchio down the left, went to the touchline and cut the ball back for Sturridge. The striker mishit his shot, but Lallana was on hand to tuck it home from 5 yards with a graceful spin and toe poke.

With the tie now over for all intents and purposes, little of note happened. Joe Allen, Christian Benteke and Lucas Leiva all came on for the Reds, Sturridge and Lallana both had good chances well saved, and Suárez was finally booked in the 94th minute, to ironic applause from an otherwise ecstatic home crowd.

EUROPA LEAGUE FINAL YOU GUYS! Yeah, that was a comprehensively professional performance from Liverpool against a top European side. Klopp made no bones about what his game plan was going to be when the line-up was released, and his players delivered. In the Anfield cauldron, the Redmen rarely gave their opponents a moment's peace, and the team-wide effort to win the ball back whenever it was lost was impressive throughout the entirety of the match.

Emre Can was majestic in the midfield general role, setting the tempo of the game on offense and busting heads on defense, without compromising his positioning. Milner put in a vintage performance both ways, as did Lallana. Firmino was terrific throughout, creating all three goals and terrorising the Villarreal defenders whenever they were on the ball. Lovren was stuck to Bakambu for the full 90 minutes, never giving the striker a sniff, and Clyne delivered another terrific performance, locking down his flank and bombing forward at every opportunity. Sturridge looked dangerous, and notched a goal and an assist, but his decision making let him down on a few occasions, and he could've had more of both.

The second cup final of the Klopp era is now a fact, and it has only taken seven months. Regardless of the wobbles the team has experienced in the league, especially recently, this kind of knock-out competition nous is something that has been missing since Benítez was sacked in 2010, and fans should be overjoyed to have it back. That game is the only really important one left in the season, and beating consecutive champions Sevilla in Basel on May 18th is going to make a massive difference to the club's spending and drawing power in the summer.

After Liverpool dismantled Villarreal to reach the Europa League final, we want to know who you think were Liverpool's best and worst performers and who your Man of the Match was.

That was simply amazing. What a performance from Liverpool to reach the Europa League final by dismantling Villarreal at Anfield. A side that lies in fourth in La Liga and has secured a place in the Champions League qualifying rounds had no answer to Jürgen Klopp's side. This was the way to respond to losing the first leg, and Liverpool's fans ensured that it was yet another special European night at Anfield. Credit to the players who kept their heads and put in some excellent performances.

Now let us know how you saw it. Hitting the thumbs up button is a vote to move the player up the list or to help keep them on top. Hitting thumbs down is a vote to push that player closer to the bottom. It's half Man of the Match poll and half power ranking, and we want to use it to find out who you think played well after each Liverpool match and, at the other end, who you'd maybe like to see given the next game off.

At the end of the month we'll go through the results of that month's polls to help choose the Liverpool Offside's Player of the Month and, come May, those monthly results will help to determine your Player of the Season for 2015-16.

Perfect plan. Perfect execution. Liverpool are on to their second final of the season, and their first European final since 2007.

Pre-game Thoughts: So, here we are. 90 minutes and a two-goal win away from a second final this season. I needed to crack open a Carlsberg to calm the nerves. Daniel Sturridge gets the nod to lead the line, and Emre Can makes an early (and much needed!) return from an ankle injury he picked up against Dortmund. In a perfect world, Liverpool can pick up an early goal to get Anfield rockin' and help the home side push on for a second. So, that probably won't happen. Surely if we do advance it'll be in the most heart attack inducing way possible.

YNWA, gospel-style. A little weird at first, but still moving as always.

Liverpool created a half-chance within the first minute, as Coutinho finds his Brazilian teammate Firmino with a lovely chip over the top. Nothing comes of it, but a good start from the hosts.

For better or for worse, this game already looks like it'll be more open than last week's cagey affair. Giddy-up.

Mignolet comes up with an important early save, as Villarreal work the ball into the box and test the Belgian keeper's far post.

***GOAL!*** GAME FUCKING ON. Can immediately makes his presence felt, as he picks out Clyne on a fantastic through ball. Clyne, in turn puts in a dangerous cross that finds Firmino at the far post, and Firmino squares it for Sturridge who is able to distract Villarreal's Bruno, who turned the ball into the back of the net. 1-0 to the Reds, 1-1 on aggregate.

Liverpool are cranking up the pressure early, and looking dangerous with each venture into the attacking third. Milner picks out Lallana with a great through ball into the box, but Lallana rolls the ball past the far post with his first-touch shot. Would have been a phenomenal goal, but Milner's pass deserved a better finish from his international teammate.

After a frantic opening quarter of an hour, the match has settled down in the last ten or so minutes. Liverpool are looking less shaky at the back, but still dangerous on their ventures forward.

Roberto Firmino with a moment of pure sex, back heel nutmeg in the box, earning a corner.

Soldado and Lovren get into it. The former Tottenham man goes down like he was shot after a Lovren lightly brushed the back of his head. He then responds by slapping Lovren's leg.

Soldado finally booked for an extremely late challenge on Coutinho. Could have easily been his second.

Villarreal create one final chance on a counter right before half, but Bukambu hits a weak effort straight at Mignolet and the ref blows for halftime.

Halftime Thoughts: Absolutely the first half we needed to see from the home side. The Reds looked dangerous in attack, and were pressing all over the pitch like goddamned maniacs. Of course, Villarreal can ruin Liverpool's night with just one moment of inspiration, so the Reds need to keep on their toes for rest of the match. Despite Liverpool looking dangerous for most of the first half, they've not done much to test the keeper. In fact, the Reds find themselves in the odd situation where they have as many goals as shots on target and their shot on target was not the one that resulted in a goal. Things will get very interesting if Liverpool can manage to bag a second and Villarreal find themselves needing to come out of their counterattacking shell.

Bukambu creating problems before and after the halftime whistle, but Lovren comes up with a big block to deny the Villarreal striker.

Coutinho with some sex of his own, sending the defender the wrong way, and trying to beat the keeper to the near post. He does not.

Milner not clearing first man on a corner klaxon.

Lallana, once again looking like the most likely, and least likely person to score. Once again he's set through by Milner, and once again he can't put the chance on target. Very frustrating.

***GOAL!!*** STURRIDGE! The striker latches onto a blocked shot, and is typically deadly. The shot is partially blocked by the keeper, but the shot has enough power to carry on off the keeper, off the post, and over the line. Now, KEEP THAT DAMNED CLEAN SHEET!!!

As can be expected, Villarreal have come out of their shell, and it is terrifying. It will take a heroic effort to keep the Yellow Submarine off the score sheet tonight.

***RED CARD*** Villarreal are down to ten men, as Ruiz picks up a second yellow and is sent off. For some strange reason this actually makes me more nervous. No excuse not to see this through now.

Fimino goes close with a well-struck ball from just inside the box. Unfortunately it's straight at the keeper.

Lallana might have missed a few big chances tonight, but Klopp will have erotic dreams about his pressing from tonight. He's been absolutely relentless today. Seriously without relent.

Moreno with a heart-in-mouth moment as he runs through Suarez in the box. Fowler must be watching out for us tonight, as no penalty is given.

Fifteen minutes to play. Up a goal. Up a man. And this will likely be the longest 15 minutes of the season. Maybe the longest 15 minutes of my life.

***GOAL!*** ADAM FUCKING LALLANA WITH THE GOAL OF THE SEASON (so far). Firmino drives past his defender, squares it for Sturridge, who mishits his effort. The ball finds its way to Lallana who is kept onside by a fallen Villarreal player, and the simplest of touches sends the effort into the goal. 3-0 to the Scousers!

Wee Joe Allen victory dance. The Red Panda comes on for Coutinho. No Panda, no party, and it's party time, y'all.

And now Benteke comes on for Firmino. This was easily Firmino's best performance since coming back from injury.

"You'll Never Walk Alone" rings out as Lucas comes for Sturridge, who played a part in all three of Liverpool's goals tonight. Walk on, Daniel.

Full Time: What can I possibly say? The plan and execution were perfect. Everything went right for the Reds tonight, and Everything is The Best.

A pass by Roberto Firmino sent the striker in all alone and his left-footed finish clanked off the post and into the net to send Anfield into a delirious roar. 25 minutes stand between Liverpool and the Final.

After losing 1-0 in the opening leg of the Europa League semifinal against Villarreal, Liverpool have pulled level on aggregate within seven minutes of the opening whistle of the second leg. It's being credited right now as an own goal off of a Villarreal defender, but it doesn't matter how it went it. It's level and there's all to play for in the remaining 80 minutes.

The fans helped Liverpool past Borussia Dortmund in the quarter-final, and Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp believes they can do the same against Villarreal in the semis.

It’s been a long time since Anfield played host to the sorts of famous European nights the club once became known for. There have been European nights, and games with atmosphere—especially during 2013-14’s title push—but nothing of the sort that once gained Liverpool a reputation.

It’s been a long time since Anfield has been as loud as it was against Dortmund in the second leg of the Europa League quarter-final three weeks ago, a game and atmosphere that harked back to some of the club’s European runs a decade earlier. Manager Jürgen Klopp is hoping for similar tonight against Villarreal.

"If we can create with our game a similar atmosphere as against Dortmund then it will be much more difficult for Villarreal than they imagine in this moment," said Liverpool’s manager. "It’s not that I always from now on expect wonders from us or the crowd, but we all felt how big the influence was."

Down a goal to a stubborn defensive side that has already secured a place in next season’s Champions League. Down to a Spanish side at a time when Spain is the dominating force in Europe as England was a decade ago and Italy before that. Down to a side that has only conceded three goals three times this season.

It certainly seems a game when Liverpool will need the help of the crowd as they did against Dortmund in the last round, and all signs point to Anfield again being in full voice. Beyond the crowd, though, Klopp says that he has a few tricks up his sleeve; that he learned a few things from the first leg and is feeling confident.

"Obviously before the first game the things we knew were based mainly on analysis," he added. "But now we have seen things in the game itself. That is why the second leg is always different. Before the draw you want the first leg away and second at home because you can fix a few things, change a few things.

"That’s what we’ve tried to do. It’s a new game and it’s a big opportunity. It’s a semi-final and everything is possible. A lot of things are possible and I don’t want to talk too much about what we’ll do because hopefully we can surprise them a little bit."
