In this moment, maybe it's okay to just head back to the dressing room when you are frustrated with how your game went without having it mean anything in the grand scheme of things.

Sunday's loss to Swansea was rough for Liverpool's away support. An unusually early kick off for a Sunday caused transportation issues for anyone hoping to arrive in and return from Wales on the same day, with the first train from Lime Street to Swansea arriving approximately an hour after the match was set to finish. Pouring rain and an abysmal match added insult to injury, and the overall experience was one that might engender appreciative feelings for the away support's unfortunate plight.

It's in this rather miserable context that post-match complaints began to pop up online when some of that away support felt aggrieved by a perceived slight from star striker Daniel Sturridge. After being the subject of rampant speculation over his failure to get off the bench vs Villareal on Thursday, Sturridge immediately went down the players' tunnel after playing a full ninety minutes but coming up short on goals. His lack of salute to the away fans did not go unnoticed by many.

"If somebody forgot to say something to the fans then it's my fault," manager Jürgen Klopp said after Sturridge's actions were brought to his attention. "It is nobody else's fault. If you think we ignore the fans it's not what we wanted. I went too immediately. Hopefully our fans know how close we are to them. After a game like this if you want to leave, if you want to go... you [might] want to rest and recover and do a lot of things."

It's an entirely reasonable position that every once in a while your annoyance over the game might trump clapping the travelling support. Liverpool players and fans have always had a good relationship, it should stand to reason that this relationship won't suddenly come apart at the seams if one or both parties slip on their usual traditions every once in a while.

After being comprehensively outplayed by an average Swansea side, Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp offered his perspective on young players and sought to recalibrate expectations.

A 3-1 defeat away to Swansea was probably not the way Jürgen Klopp wanted to set the table for a midweek clash with Villareal, but the Liverpool manager has never been one for crying over spilled milk. Addressing the media after the match, Klopp offered the usual "we'll learn and move on" speech, but also didn't shy away from talking about where things went wrong.

Unsurprisingly, Klopp was invited, during the press conference, to talk about the youth and inexperience of the starting lineup. The goal was clear. Bring on some fresh legs to do the hard running against a side looking to make top flight football a certainty, continue to acquaint the kids with the pace of the Premier League, and save some of the key players for the Europa League.

Given their schedule and their luck (or lack thereof) with injuries, this was not the first Liverpool side in recent history to feature a multitude of changes and youthful faces, but it was one of the more prominent occasions where everything failed to come together. Klopp was quick to point out that placing too much emphasis on the loss was probably as ill-advised as being overly enthused about the precociousness displayed in previous matches.

After Bournemouth, after Stoke, after these games, everybody said ‘oh my God, how good are these young players?’ They are good, but that is how it is – life as a professional football player is not always a honeymoon. You have to prove, you have to deliver. Today it did not work too well, but it is not a problem for the future, it is only a problem for today. A result or a game like this would only be completely senseless if you do not use the information for the future – and that’s what we will do for sure.

We played really well with different line-ups in the last few games. Today we didn’t. That’s less surprising than the good games we played, to be honest, with 10 changes or things like this.

That may not be the salve that Liverpool supporters were looking for after a dispiriting result, but as is usually the case with Klopp, there is more than a grain of common sense in his assessment. It does ask a tremendous amount of a side when there are that many changes. In other circumstances, a manager might be accused of setting his side up to fail. That Liverpool have, when fielding similar sides, been able to pull out results more often than they have been overrun is something of an encouraging sign.

When asked about specific performances from his young charges - in particular Pedro Chirivella, who was somewhat lost at sea on his full league debut - Klopp was equally willing to take the common sense, long-term perspective, focusing on the positives rather than on the (clearly) significant strides yet to be taken.

[Chirivella] is a wonderful player. He is a passing player and a big, big talent. Today he forgot to orientate himself a little bit – that’s usually his strength, knowing what’s around him. He is a really cool and calm with the ball, but today it was not a game for [this]. Usually it could have been a game [for it], but it’s only one game in his long, long football career, so that’s not a problem. For today, it was not too easy for him.

Liverpool supporters are not unaccustomed to being asked to take the good with the bad where young players are concerned. And despite the promise that some of those players have displayed in recent times, performances like these are can, and will, appear again. The goal is always long-term improvement, and more time is needed before the club can separate the Sterlings from the Susos. In the meantime, the senior players have the regroup and refocus for the Europa League.

A young Liverpool side, with limited assistance from the grownups, is unable to hold the line against a Swansea side looking for added security, and succumbs to a dispiriting defeat ahead of a huge rematch with Villarreal.

Swansea 3 Ayew 21', Cork 33', Ayew 67'
Liverpool 1 Benteke 65'

In late season matches such as these, where the combatants are not challenging for major honors, and where incentives are not easily apparent, there can sometimes nonetheless appear moments of magic where a young star announces his arrival, or where a fringe player mounts a career-redefining comeback.

This was not one of those matches.

Instead, this was the footballing equivalent of giving the keys to a teenager who had just earned his driver's license and watching him scrape the door frame while backing the car out of the garage.

There was a lot of noise accompanying the announcement of the lineups, mostly around the youth - unprecedented in the Premier League era - of the Liverpool side. While this was a very young side indeed, there was still a handful of more familiar and experienced faces sprinkled throughout.

The question on this day would always be whether youthful exuberance would be married with the positional awareness to make it count. Swansea accepted the challenge of testing this notion early, starting brightly and moving the ball around at pace, with Gylfi Sigurðsson as the focal point and André Ayew as the very sharp and pointy tip of the spear.

Philippe Coutinho drew a similar assignment in a central position, but was mostly unable to exert a corresponding influence, having been deprived of several of his usual partners in crime. Behind him, Kevin Stewart and Pedro Chirivella were tasked with disrupting Swansea's efforts and establishing a foundation for Liverpool's runners.

Stewart has had a bit more seasoning with the senior team than Chirivella, and it was evident early, with the former Spurs academy player showing a bit more composure and looking for the more aggressive option. Chirivella seemed somewhat overwhelmed by the occasion, which is unfortunate given the relatively low stakes in this contest, and had his pocket picked by Swansea time and time again.

Swansea were invited to capitalize on Liverpool's hesitancy in working the ball out of their own backyard, and the hosts duly obliged. So frequently and easily was possession surrendered that both Sturridge and Coutinho started to show intermittent indifference towards tracking back. Inevitably, a Swansea break led to a Swansea corner, which led to a Swansea opening goal, courtesy of a close range header from Ayew.

Danny Ward, standing in for Simon Mignolet in goal, had done good work to minimize the damage up until that point, but even his confidence was starting to look just a bit frayed. Worryingly, some of the defensive fortitude that Liverpool seemed to have rediscovered in the second half of the season appeared all but evaporated here, the culmination of a trend that had been looming since the loss of Jordan Henderson, then Emre Can, then most recently Mamadou Sakho, and not helped by the reticence of Stewart and Chirivella.

The next beneficiary of Liverpool's shakiness was Jack Cork. The Swansea midfielder was first to a loose ball in the Liverpool half, and glided forward virtually unchallenged before unleashing a beautiful curling effort past a helpless Ward. The visitors were two goals down at the half and not looking likely to erase that difference.

Realizing that something clearly needed to be done, Klopp summoned Christian Benteke and Lucas Leiva for the restart, in place of Coutinho and Chirivella respectively. Formation-wise, Liverpool switched to something resembling a 4-4-2. Almost immediately, there was a shade more stability in midfield, but the combination of Benteke and Sturridge was neither a comfortable nor a fluid one. To their credit, Sheyi Ojo and Jordon Ibe were less tentative in the second half, but still displayed a tendency to carry the ball into traffic where possession was promptly lost.

A corner taken by Ojo found Benteke, who was able to briefly offer a glimpse of hope for Liverpool after he headed home from close range. But Swansea were having none of it. Mere minutes later, an attack initiated by the effervescent Montero led to a comical defensive sequence for Liverpool, who failed to clear and allowed Ayew to slot home his second of the day. The comeback was over before it began, and there was room for more disappointment before the final whistle when Brad Smith received his marching orders for his second yellow card.

It doesn't take a genius to realize that this was a match that Liverpool started and played with one eye on their match with Villarreal on Thursday. It also wasn't the first time that several younger players were called upon to prove the depth in this Liverpool squad. It was, however, the first time this season that their inexperience was so brutally exposed, with the older hands unable to staunch the bleeding.

All the eggs are now in the Europa League basket, and Klopp will have to be at his creative best to extract anything positive from this performance, while also hoping that any erosion of confidence suffered here will be quickly forgotten.

With a loss against Swansea in the books, we want to know how you would rank Liverpool's performers and who your Man of the Match is.

Well, that was a thing that happened. With an eye to Thursday's Europa League match against Villareal, Liverpool never looked much like doing anything against Swansea and the best thing that can be said of the match is that it's over.

Now let us know how you saw things. Clicking the thumbs up button is a vote to move the player up the list-or to help keep them on top. Hitting thumbs down is a vote to push that player closer to the bottom. It's half Man of the Match poll and half player rankings, and we want to use it to find out who you think played well after each Liverpool match and, at the other end, who you'd maybe like to see given the next game off.

At the end of the month we'll go back through the results of that month's Ranker polls to hold a Player of the Month vote. Then, at the end of the season, the monthly results will help to determine The Liverpool Offside's Player of the Season and Young Player of the Season.

Pregame: Perpetuation of narrative by Mustoe going on about the "icy" relationship between Sturridge and Klopp, and how the player's playing in the "B team". Zoinks.

Pretty stout opening defensive moments for Liverpool. Clyne and Skrtel each having good moments, Stewart with a textbook cover on a slightly mistimed tackle from Dejan, and even Smith gets in a good tackle that he showed his studs too much on.

A sequence of atrocious possessional play/decision making allows Swansea a few chances. Smith, Stewart, and Ward all having to step up, but Sturridge had a turnover at midfield that his centerbacks won't be thanking him for.

Worrying trend of Liverpool players putting their head down and dribbling straight at white shirts instead of letting the ball do the work for them. It's allowed Swansea to have the best of the opening exchanges.

GOAL Turnover leads to transition, which leads to a corner. Ball gets put right in the heart of the box, Ward doesn't come and Ayew shakes off Sturridge to beat Dejan to the ball and in. Fun times.

Liverpool finally start passing and moving a bit, and it leads to an Ibe shot from the top of the box. Funny how that works, gents.

Halftime: For the first time in 2016, Klopp's faith in his depth completely backfires. Pretty hard to play winning football without a midfield protecting the defense or releasing the attack. Our halftime team talk includes bacon, eggs, and an earl grey.

How many games have Benteke and Sturridge played together? This is one of them as the Belgian comes on for Coutinho, and Lucas comes on for Chirivella to stabilize what has been arguably the worst half of midfielding for Liverpool this season.

RED CARD Second yellow for Brad Smith with just a really poorly timed slam into a white shirt that was always going to be a foul. That's the part of the guy's game that worries you.

Sheyi Ojo can hold his head up a little bit with his performance in this one. Klopp has something there.

Team sheets, television and streaming options, and live coverage as Swansea City welcome Liverpool to the Liberty Stadium.

Francesco Guidolin's Swansea City have secured Premier League football for next season, but will they secure three points against Jürgen Klopp's Liverpool? A rested Daniel Sturridge and squad options that have proved their reliability over the last three league fixtures will certainly have something to say about it.

For their part, Liverpool fans will be hoping for a straightforward, professional victory that allows the team to focus on their upcoming Europa League second leg clash at Anfield versus Villareal.
Five questions to pass the time as we wait for kick off from the Liberty Stadium.

1) Can Martin Skrtel find a way back into the central defense, or is it new business as usual with Kolo Toure and Dejan Lovren?

2) I always forget that James Milner exists when I ask questions about the midfield. So. James Milner? In the study, with the candlestick.

3) With an eye towards the return leg of the Europa League semi-final, will we see any youth like Jordon Ibe or Sheyi Ojo in the starting line-up tomorrow?

4) Will Daniel "Gimme Some Minutes" Sturridge be left on the bench again in a controversial move by Jurgen Klopp?

5) How many goals will Liverpool concede from set pieces?

Bonus: I am watching Titanic for the nine millionth time. What is a movie that isn't necessarily spectacular and isn't necessarily your favourite that you've watched over and over again?

Liverpool travel to south to Liberty Stadium to take on Swansea City for an early Sunday league match up.

Liverpool travel to Wales to take on Francesco Guidolin's Swansea City in an early Sunday Premier League match up (set your alarms and coffee machines now, West coasters).

After a generally excellent first three weeks in April that began with Liverpool holding Spurs to a draw at Anfield and ended with the Reds thoroughly dominating their Blue neighbors 4-0 -- along with advancement to the Europa League semi-finals in between -- the month petered out in the disappointing way that many Liverpool fans should be used to by now. First they gave up a two goal lead to draw with relegation fodder Newcastle, then they allowed Villarreal to score a last-gasp winner in the first leg of the Europa League semi-finals. But that terrible week is over, and that month is over, and now Liverpool have the chance to regroup and end the season well.

After a strong start to their league campaign, Swansea City have dropped like a stone, falling to fifteenth in the league with only 40 points. With the bottom-dwellers so much farther behind, they've surely done enough to avoid relegation, but they're also a few wins and some luck away from ending the season at a more respectable tenth or eleventh place. Both teams are playing for pride at this point in the season, but games can get interesting when there's nothing left to lose. As for squad fitness, Swansea may be without both Leroy Fer and Alberto Paloschi due to hamstring injuries.

In the reverse fixture back in November, it took a James Milner penalty for the Reds to nick a victory. This match should see Klopp overhaul his starting line up from the one who lost in Spain mid-week. Expect to see many fringe players, including Sheyi Ojo, Kevin Stewart, and Jordon Ibe get another opportunity to shine. The league is a lost cause for Liverpool at this point, and Thursday's return fixture against Villarreal is their last chance to have something to play for in May.

For Liverpool:

Ward
Randall, Skrtel, Ilori, Smith
Allen, Stewart,
Ojo, Lallana, Ibe
Sturridge

With the suspension of Mamadou Sakho, Liverpool are incredibly light on center-backs at the moment. Klopp played Lovren and Toure against Villarreal and will likely do so again next Thursday. They'll be given a break for Skrtel and one other. Perhaps it will be Lucas, the makeshift center-back, but this may also be another chance for the young Tiago Ilori or even Steven Caulker.

Along with Sakho, Liverpool will be missing Jordan Henderson, Divock Origi, and Emre Can. Philippe Coutinho may be still recovering from the injury that had him taken out in the second half of the Villarreal game. Danny Ings, Jordan Rossiter, and Joe Gomez remain out.
