Liverpool's 2-0 win against Manchester United in the first leg of the clubs Europa League tie has everyone talking. Of course the media and fans are dissecting every single minute of the match, but even one of United's most recognizable legends is making his feelings known.

After the match that saw Liverpool dominate their hated rivals, former Manchester United midfielder, Paul Scholes, was on post-match TV coverage as an analyst. He laid into his former team after their uninspired performance at Anfield. He criticized their lack of energy and lackadaisical play, even going as far as saying that Adam Lallana, who enjoyed himself on the night with some cheeky skills and flicks, should've been taken out by United players for showboating.

It's quite clear that Manchester United are not the same team they used to be. Their mystique of being one of the best clubs in the world is long gone. Their former players being frustrated in the media is fine, as is their right, but it's not going to help them regain their form anytime soon.

Roberto Firmino put in a Man of the Match performance against rivals Manchester United in the Europa League on Thursday evening. Relive it with this every-touch compilation.

In Roberto Firmino’s first eight Liverpool games, the attacker had no goals and or assists. Anybody who had watched him play in the Bundesliga was confident he could deliver, but those who hadn’t quickly began to wonder if perhaps the club had overreached by paying £29M for the versatile Brazilian.

Then, Liverpool changed managers, bringing in a man who had watched Firmino regularly while managing in Germany and who identified the 24-year-old as one of the Bundesliga’s best. The change was immediate, and in the 29 games since, Firmino has been Liverpool’s leading scorer with nine goals and nine assists.

Since the start of 2016, Firmino has eight goals and four assists in 15 games across all competitions. He has been not just Liverpool’s leading scorer, but their best attacker and best player. And so it was hardly a surprise when he again turned in a Man of the Match performance against rivals Manchester United last night.

Unlike so many attacking players, Firmino doesn’t just bring chances and key passes and goals. He also brings industry. There are few attackers in the league as dedicated to chasing their man back into the defensive third when their teammates get caught high up the pitch. There are few as willing to press, tackle, and harry.

Against United, he scored the second goal, set up the penalty, and could have had a few more assists had his teammates finished better—or had David de Gea not stood on his head once again in a match against Liverpool. He also pressed constantly. And he chased back regularly, too, covering for out of position teammates.

It was a complete, dominant performance. It was also the kind of a performance many Liverpool fans have come to expect from Firmino. Long may it continue.

After manhandling Manchester United in the first leg of their Europa League tie, Jürgen Klopp paid tribute to the home fans for their performance.

Jürgen Klopp has been a spoiled man when it comes to match atmosphere. Borussia Dortmund's Gelbe Wand is among the world's most consistently thunderous and creative stadium sections, and with 80.000 fans attending most home games at the Signal Iduna Park, the climate in the arena is one that persistently inspires the home team and provokes dread in visitors.

Despite Liverpool's reputation for quality home support, it has been decades since Anfield consistently created this kind of climate. Certainly, the famous Kop gets up for grudge matches and big European ties, but on a week-to-week basis, the Reds no longer have a standout crowd in terms of noise and support.

One could be forgiven then, for imagining that Klopp might have been less than overwhelmed by the home crowd on occasion, and his public pleas for the crowd to turn it up for specific games this year could indicate as much. He got his way on Thursday night, as the combination of arch-rivals and European knockout rounds inspired the strongest showing from the home fans all year. Klopp noticed, and appreciated it.

"The atmosphere tonight was unbelievable. It was really great and I want to say thank you to everybody that was involved in this atmosphere.

"It was easy to enjoy from the first until the last second. That was Liverpool how I knew it before I came here, so that was really, really great.

"Thank you for this."

The players and fans took turns putting in season-best performances, and the end result was a dominant win that was only kept to a reasonable scoreline by another vexingly masterful performance from David De Gea. And while the Spaniard was the clear standout for his side, Klopp felt every one of his own players delivered quality performances:

"It’s not the first time that Clyney has played well and been very important for us. But tonight, if we start giving grades, if you want this, then there are a lot of good grades.

"Simon Mignolet, we can start with him, he was really good. Everything, absolutely no mistake in this game and it’s difficult to stay concentrated when you always know each cross or corner or each free-kick is really dangerous because [Marouane] Fellaini is on the pitch.

"Emre and Hendo did a brilliant job, Phil, Adam, great, Roberto, Daniel, as long as he was on the pitch, that was really good.

"The substitutes, Joe Allen when he came in [was] so important, so good. Divock Origi, [gave us] again the control of the game because they couldn’t play like they wanted because they knew each bad pass was a counter-attack because Divock and his speed is dangerous too. It was good, so I don’t have to compare the players – tonight I’m really pleased with all of them."

The Reds have been inconsistent all season, but the hope is that, now that the worst of the injuries seem to have passed, will manage to find a steady run of form to close out the season. Knocking their arch-rivals out of the Europa League and moving on to the quarter-finals of European competition for the first time since 2010 would be the perfect way to kick that off.

A tremendous performance from David De Gea was the only thing preventing this from entering blowout territory, as Liverpool thoroughly dominate van Gaal's disciples at Anfield.

With no game at the weekend, Jürgen Klopp was free to select his best XI, and with Liverpool's injury worries nearly behind them, those players were all available. Captain Jordan Henderson and Emre Can made up the double pivot in midfield, screeneing a back four of Nathaniel Clyne, Dejan Lovren, Mamadou Sakho and Alberto Moreno. In front of them, Adam Lallana, Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino were tasked with creating chances for lone striker Daniel Sturridge, as well as pressuring United's midfield and back line into making mistakes.

After only fifteen seconds, Memphis Depay got around Clyne on the right and swung in a cross, which 18 year old Marcus Rashford could only touch wide. It would be the visitors' only shot in the first half hour.

The first fifteen minutes were characterised by lots of dueling and massive crowd noise from both home and away fans, but little in the way of chance creation. Henderson was deservedly booked for a studs up challenge in the 2nd minute, and tackles were flying in from everywhere. The first bit of quality on the night came after the Reds broke through United's press and a Coutinho back heel played in a streaking Moreno. His early cross found Sturridge at the far post, but the striker's cut back towards Henderson was cut out by Lallana.

A minute later, Liverpool earned their second penalty in 4 days. Memphis started dragging Clyne back outside the box and carried on doing so as the fullback continued his run. A tangle of feet on the 18 yard line just as Firmino played the through ball was enough for Clyne to go down and the referee to blow his whistle. Up stepped Sturridge, confidently dispatching the penalty past De Gea, despite the Spaniard getting a finger to the ball. The already noisy crowd hit a crescendo and Liverpool were ahead.

Five minutes later, De Gea made the first of four world class saves on the night. A Sturridge shot-cum-cross found its way to Coutinho at the far post. The Brazilian only had to tuck the ball home from three yards, but his touch off the outside of the boot wasn't accurate enough, and De Gea got across to punch the ball off the line.

Marouane Fellaini caused havoc in the Liverpool box on the half hour, and Sakho's missed clearance presented Juan Mata with the ball on 20 yards, but the Reds defenders converged on the Spaniard before he could get a shot off. On the other end of the pitch, Firmino dribbled past three defenders and chipped the ball through for Sturridge. Smalling slipped as he tried to turn, and the injury-prone striker was one on one with De Gea. Choosing power over precision, he smashed the ball off the goalkeeper's thigh and out for a corner.

A period without much incident followed, as sections of the away fans shamed their club by engaging in tasteless Hillsborough chants and Fellaini escaped punishment for a deliberate stamp on Lovren. A few minutes from half time, Firmino drilled in a near post cross, and Lallana struck a shot straight at De Gea from 6 yards. The Reds were dominating possession and chance creation and only the

Louis Van Gaal put Michael Carrick on for Rashford and changed the away side's formation to a 3-5-2 at the start of the second half, immediately creating trouble for the home team, with waves of attacks rolling down Liverpool's right side. The center did well to hold though, and no real chances came of the sustained pressure.

Coutinho took the spotlight, first getting booked for a sloppy piece of simulation down by the touchline, then smacking in a 20-yard half-volley after a classy chest pass from Firmino. The ball was dipping into the near top corner, but De Gea again was equal to the shot and tipped it over the bar with a strong hand.

United were attacking down Liverpool's left now, as Coutinho and Moreno struggled to control their flank, and Simon Mignolet was forced into action with a strong punch from a Varela cross. Fellaini was finally booked on his third foul of the night, before Klopp had seen his side lose enough control and decided to introduce Joe Allen in place of Sturridge, pushing Firmino into the striker role.

It would prove a decisive move, as the home side immediately regained control of the middle of the park, winning the ball high up the pitch and putting the opposition under pressure. Clyne hammered the ball at the far corner from 20 yards, but was denied by De Gea. Another break down the left gave Henderson plenty of time and space to pick his spot from 14 yards, but his finish went a yard high of the far top corner.

The second goal was in the air now, and arrived with twenty minutes to go. Carrick botched a clearance, Lallana picked it up and cut it back for Firmino, who was waiting 6 yards out. His left-footed finish swept past De Gea, and his five-fingered salute brought the crowd to another deafening climax. The Brazilian would leave the pitch ten minutes later, as Divock Origi came on to threaten the visitors' back line with his pace on the counter.

Liverpool sat back and controlled the match, and United picked up their biggest chance of the match, as Fellaini headed a Schweinsteiger cross wide of Mignolet's post. The visitors were lucky to finish the match with eleven players, as Fellaini picked up a yellow along with six fouls, and decided to see the game out with a blatant elbow swing to Can's head.

On the biggest night of Klopp's tenure so far, Liverpool come up big with one of their best performances under the German. They had eight shots on target to United's one, eight shots from inside the box to United's two, and comfortably won the xG battle 2.4 to 0.3. It was a dominant and exciting performance, and only De Gea prevented a proper trashing.

Performances were tremendous wall-to-wall, with the backline holding firm when under pressure, the double pivot stacking up tackles, protecting their defenders, and distributing excellently, and the front four showing movement, creativity and efficiency. Special mentions go to Firmino for yet again being the offensive hub of the side, Lallana for relentlessly harrying the ball carrier, and Clyne for shutting down his flank as well as being an attacking outlet. Klopp must also get credit for understanding the game and making perfect reactive substitutions, neutralising United when it looked like they were about to find a way back into the game.

With no game at the weekend, Liverpool have a full seven days to recover and plan for the return fixture. They've set themselves up perfectly to advance, but there are still ninety minutes to play, and the Red Devils are no pushovers at Old Trafford.

With a well deserved 2-0 victory in the books, we want to know who you think were Liverpool's best and worst performers and who your Man of the Match was.

Liverpool dominated the opening leg of their Europa League tie against league rivals Manchester United, and only David de Gea’s heroics stopped the Reds going four or five up. Still, a 2-0 victory and strong performances across the pitch, from fullbacks to midfield to the attack, will have a lot of fans feeling awfully positive heading into the second leg.

Now let us know how you saw it. Hitting the thumbs up button is a vote to move the player up the list—or to help keep them on top. Hitting thumbs down is a vote to push that player closer to the bottom. It's half Man of the Match poll and half power ranking, and we want to use it to find out who you think played well after each Liverpool match and, at the other end, who you'd maybe like to see given the next game off.

At the end of the month we'll go through the results of that month's polls to help choose the Liverpool Offside’s Player of the Month and, come next May, those monthly results will help to determine your Player of the Season for 2015-16.

Pregame Thoughts: It doesn't get much bigger than this. Liverpool and Manchester United at Anfield for a European Night™. Liverpool are coming out with a strong attacking line-up: Sturridge up top, with Lallana, Firmino, and Coutinho all in support in the attacking midfield band. That's a lot of pressing and a lot of potential firepower tonight. It would be nice to see Coutinho show up against United like he customarily does against City, and I'd love to see Sturridge get back into the groove and score some big, big goals tonight.

Half-time: Zero stoppage time, which is always weird. The half was simply one of the best by Liverpool this season, and we'll likely regret not being further in front. Liverpool had nearly 70% of the possession and 5 shots on target to United's big, fat goose egg. De Gea, as is his MO, is having a worldie against us. Coutinho is looking lively, doing magician things. Sturridge looked sharp in and around the box. And we looked the better team, through and through. Our one weak spot so far has been Sahko, who has had a few nervy (and awkward) moments at the back. Come on, Mamadou! We know you're better than that!
