Liverpool Defender Plans Germany Move

With his contract about to expire, sources in Germany believe Stephen Sama is planning a move home to 2. Bundesliga side VfL Bochum.

With his contract expiring and no suggestion Liverpool plan on renewing, 21-year-old defender Stephen Sama is likely to move to 2. Bundesliga side VfL Bochum on a free transfer. The Cameroonian born Sama holds a German passport and grew up in Bochum, making a move to the German second division side something of a return home.

"Liverpool, with its successes, its quality, and its fans would be an outstanding club for any footballer," Sama told the Ruhr News sports desk when asked about the possibility of heading back to Bochum once his Liverpool contract expired. "But I also like the mentality in the Ruhr area and would describe myself as very attached to my home."

Sama was signed as a highly rated youngster from Borussia Dortmund in 2009, but in five seasons at Liverpool, the German youth international never realised his potential and in recent years has been passed in the reserves by the likes of Andre Wisdom and Rafa Paez. The signing of Tiago Ilori further signalled there would be no room for him at Anfield.

Regardless of whether he can come to terms with Bochum, Sama will end his time at Liverpool without having made a first team appearance in England.
