The excitement of the transfer window just keeps coming for Liverpool. Not so much with the big name rumours and exciting incomings and more with kids going out on loan. But still. Stuff is happening. On a short term basis and that won't have any bearing on Liverpool's success this season though it might result in a small pay off some time down the road.
Young right back Ryan McLaughlin today headed off to join Barnsley for a month with the possibility his loan could be extended for the remainder of the season. While some had speculated the 19-year-old Northern Ireland U21 international could see his debut for Liverpool with the club dealing with a slew of fullback injuries, he will instead be seeing action in the Championship over the next few weeks.
"It’s great to be here and there are some good games coming up which I am looking forward to being involved in," McLaughlin told Barnsley's official site shortly after arriving at the South Yorkshire club. "While I’m here I want to be playing as much football as I can and do well for the team. Hopefully I’ll be able to provide more attacking options going forward and chip in with a few assists and goals and help bring us up the table."
Elsewhere, Conor Coady's Sheffield United loan has been extended for another month, keeping the midfielder at the League One club until the day before his 21st birthday. After a few promising seasons at the youth levels that saw him talked about in promising terms, in recent years Coady's development has appeared to largely plateau, and if he doesn't impress while on loan this season it's easy to imagine him following Adam Morgan out the door permanently.
At least at Sheffield, though, Coady is seeing the pitch fairly often—including making a ten minute cameo last weekend as the lower league side upset Aston Villa in the FA Cup. And if Coady isn't seen as a part of Liverpool's future, it sounds as though he at least has a fan in Sheffield manager Nigel Clough, who spoke highly of the young Liverpudlian when news of his loan extension was made official.
"He has started a lot of games since he arrived," said Clough. "He does a lot of good things, but as you would expect from a young player, has areas of his games to work on. Conor is such a bright lad, though—he has a real willingness to learn and improve and always has a smile on his face. He will certainly have benefited from this loan and he has proved to be a useful performer to have in our squad too."
Meanwhile, when it comes to incomings or anything resembling major moves and incomings, the status quo of nothing much appearing likely to happen any time soon continues to apply to Liverpool with the January window nearly a third of the way through.
