Lost in the shuffle over the past few days--a shuffle that included Daniel Agger interested in a move to Barcelona but not actually interested in a move to Barcelona because he is all that is right in the world--was the apparent progress Liverpool have made in trying to solve their continued left-back dilemma. Aly Cissokho came and went (and announced a deal for himself), and might yet end up on Merseyside, but around the same time we learned about the Agger non-situation, there was also an update on Granada left-back Guilherme Siqueira, with Liverpool reportedly close to completing the transfer.
That's just about all The Guardian was willing to commit to, unfortunately--"Liverpool are, however, believed to be close to the £5m signing of Granada's left-back Guilherme Siqueira." Today sees more rumor mongering left to be done, with Sky Sports understanding (read: they read the same quote from the article we did) that Ian Ayre is headed to complete the deal for the Brazilian-born left-back. And Cissoko too. Maybe Diego Costa while you're at it? Oh, just on a last-minute holiday, then?
Siqueira is the pick of the realistic, available left-back targets for many, someone who'd be able to not only provide depth but possibly an upgrade on Jose Enrique. After spending the first five years of his career on the books at Udinese, Siqueira made the permanent move to Granada in 2011, following up a successful loan spell during the 2010-2011 season at the Andalusian club.
The player is open to a move from Granada and has been attached to Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Manchester United, and at 27 years old he'd very much be a player for now. Good going forward and sturdy defensively, he's chipped in six goals apiece in each of the last two seasons. As noted above, the feeling is that he could prove an upgrade on the occasionally maddening Enrique, who might be better defensively but has yet to prove that he's capable of providing a positive contribution on a consistent basis.
With Stoke visiting Anfield in five days, it's not likely that Siqueira or anyone will or should displace Jose Enrique immediately. Going forward, though, it would be awfully nice for the club to have quality options, and Guilherme Siqueira certainly provides that.
