Things are well and truly getting interesting for Liverpool in the transfer market, with four signings now confirmed by the club and a slew of others heavily linked. First it was Kolo Toure, then Iago Aspas, then Luis Alberto, then Iago Aspas again, and today, it's Simon Mignolet, who arrives ostensibly to challenge Pepe Reina for the number one goalkeeping spot. The Belgian international made the move to Liverpool from Sunderland, where he held the starting role for the past two seasons.
Neil Jones at The Liverpool Echo has the deal at £9m plus add-ons, and Brendan Rodgers commented briefly on the arrival of a goalkeeper he thinks is among the league's best.
"I am delighted that we have been able to sign one of the top goalkeepers in the Barclays Premier League. Simon will join a club that will give him an opportunity to demonstrate and improve his huge talent."
All eyes on Pepe Reina now, who claimed that he would be nothing other than welcoming of both Mignolet and the competition for his position. That hasn't erased constant speculation about his future, though, and yesterday there were rumblings that his agent informed Liverpool that the player intended to join Barcelona once Victor Valdes moved on, be it now or after his contract expires next season.
For now, though, it's a welcome to Simon Mignolet, and whatever role he plays, hopefully it's one that helps move the club forward.
