With the World Cup coming to an end this afternoon, we can expect the focus on transfers to ramp up significantly. For their part, Liverpool have already been refreshingly active, with three players confirmed and at least one--Lazar Markovic, who's expected to be announced during the first part of this week--on the way in shortly. More are expected to follow given the sale of Luis Suarez, and with Ian Ayre confirming that most (if not all) of the money raised from the Uruguayan's sale will be available, we could witness a record-setting summer for Liverpool.
Ayre is reportedly playing an active role in that as we speak, as the managing director is rumored to be in Spain to try to wrap up a deal for Sevilla's Alberto Moreno. Talks had cooled over the future of the young fullback given the discrepancy over cost; Liverpool made an aggressive push at or around £16m, but his current club were hoping to receive something closer to £20m.
Reports from the Mirror have Liverpool willing to pay £18m now, though there's no discussion of how Iago Aspas might factor into any potential deal. The striker is widely expected to leave Anfield this summer, and just this past week we heard about interest from Sevilla in bringing Aspas aboard. Liverpool's willingness to either increase their offer for Moreno and/or send Aspas the other way could hopefully see an agreement reached.
As we've discussed at every turn along the way, Alberto Moreno would be a significant capture for Liverpool, and one that would address long-standing concerns about the left-back position now and for years to come.
