Rickie Lambert didn't feature for England last night in their comfortable 3-0 win over Peru, settling for a spot on the bench as he watched five of his future teammates take part at Wembley. The former academy player is set for a return home after interest from Merseyside came out of nowhere late this week, and he's now set to complete the move in the coming days after arriving in Liverpool for his medical this morning.
Assuming everything goes smoothly, Lambert will become Liverpool's first signing of the summer, with moves for Adam Lallana, Alberto Moreno, and Xherdan Shaqiri reportedly in the works as well. As we've discussed, the deal for Lambert is one that makes plenty of sense even if it's not the first signing many would have chosen--between his age, cost, and likely role, it's a purchase that was made with intention and purpose in mind, and one that should improve Brendan Rodger's matchday squad.
