With Rudi Voller confirming Liverpool's interest yesterday, there was hope that Liverpool were still gaining ground in their pursuit of the young midfielder despite the complexities that existed between Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich. Speculation outside of Voller's comments had mostly pointed to the Bavarian club being in control should they desire to bring the player back to Bavaria. Nobody seemed to have a definitive answer, and while we're not quite at the point of having complete clarity, it looks as though Liverpool might get their man.
From just a bit ago on Twitter:
Liverpool have made a breakthrough in their pursuit of Emre Can & appear to be closing in on a £12m deal for the Germany U-21 international.
— Tony Barrett (@TonyBarretTimes) May 23, 2014
Light on details, obviously, and plenty of questions left to answer regarding how the deal might be worked out between the three clubs (e.g., Bayern not exercising first option, if/when that comes into play). Given that Barrett is one of the more reliable and respected English journalists, though, it seems that Liverpool are edging closer to their first signing of what's sure to be a busy--and hopefully successful--summer.
