Rumour Mongering: Liverpool Plot Second Southampton Raid

Not satisfied with their summer haul, Liverpool are rumoured to be keeping a close eye on Southampton's Nathaniel Clyne and could go for the player if he doesn't sign a new deal.

Remember that time that Liverpool bought half the Southampton squad and plummeted to 14th in the table while Southampton ended up looking like serious top four contenders? If rumours are to be believed, the lesson learned might just be that Liverpool's only problem was that in Dejan Lovren, Rickie Lambert, and Adam Lallana they bought the wrong Southampton players.

That's because the Telegraph—a rather more respectable source than the more usual rumour mongering sorts—believe Nathaniel Clyne is on Liverpool's radar. With the Calum Chambers departing over the summer, Clyne has been given the opportunity to shine, and the 23-year-old has quickly done just that, surpassing his predecessor at the club level and now nearly a lock as England's first choice right back.

His England ascension has come at the expense of Glen Johnson, whose poor club form over the past few seasons and that in Clyne there is finally a viable alternative for England now sees the Liverpool player on the outside looking in. That Clyne is not only another Southampton player, then, but also Glen Johnson's replacement at the international level, all add up to the perfect transfer target for Liverpool.

At least in theory, that is, as it's hard to escape the feeling that as a potential transfer target, linking Clyne to Liverpool feels too perfect and more than a touch constructed. Plus there's Javi Manquillo and Jon Flanagan already at the club. Still, at the very least it's a new name for Liverpool fans to add to the list of potential January signings, and a far more encouraging one than the likes of Dani Alves.

As for Southampton's part in it all, the suggestion is they will attempt to sign Clyne to a new deal to ward off potential suitors in January and the summer. Do that and it could put an end to the Clyne to Liverpool rumours before they've really had a chance to take off. If he still hasn't signed that new deal by this time next month, though, Liverpool could be off on another Southampton raid.
