Extent of Sturridge Injury Still Unknown

Despite reports yesterday that the striker will miss a maximum of three weeks, the nature of Daniel Sturridge's thigh injury is still unknown after further evaluations at Liverpool over the weekend.

It was widely reported that Daniel Sturridge would be missing three weeks with the thigh injury he suffered on during England's preparations on Friday for their first Euro qualifier against Switzerland; there was a brief period of panic when the Evening Standard speculated the striker would miss four months, but their reports changed throughout the course of the day and nearly all tasked with writing words about things agreed that the injury would leave Sturridge out of commission for two to three weeks.

The truth, according to the Liverpool Echo, isn't yet known, however, as the club still haven't released the results of their evaluation that took place on Saturday at Melwood. Their language seems to indicate that Sturridge could be in contention for the Champions League opener against Ludogorets--"facing a race against time" and all that--rather than seated in the luxury boxes with those left out of the squad and the ghost of Fabio Aurelio.

Rushing Daniel Sturridge back would not be advisable, of course, as his injury list is long and distinguished, and if he's going to be available for the long haul, patience is needed. Liverpool have practiced that plenty of that already, unfortunately:

The Echo piece mentions that Rickie Lambert could be in contention for a start, which makes sense if Brendan Rodgers wants to stay with the diamond, but there's also the possibility that Fabio Borini nudges his way into the picking just two weeks after digging in his heels for a stay at the club. Between Lambert, Borini, and Balotelli, Rodgers' options at striker should be taken care of for the short term, while the return of Adam Lallana affords him further luxury of choice in the front four.
