These days, when it comes to Liverpool and injuries, it's usually safe to assume the worst. As a result, when Alberto Moreno was left out of the squad for Spain's U21s on Tuesday, rumours that it was due to an injury began to surface. According to Albert Celades, though, it was only a tactical switch.
"He has no issue," said the Spanish U21 manager following his side's 2-1 defeat. "There is no physical problem or anything preventing him from playing. It was a tactical decision because we thought that when it came to this match, Gaya would be a better choice for that position."
With Moreno arguably Liverpool's best player this season and that Gaya scoring the own goal that means Spain won't be at the U21 European Championships next summer to defend their title and with Celades' job under threat, one imagines he might not make the same decision if given the chance again.
Still, the mess that is Spanish football at seemingly every level at the national level isn't Liverpool's concern. Whether or not Alberto Moreno is fit is. Thankfully, it appears that he is. And that he should even be a little better rested heading into the weekend. So. Bonus.
