Liverpool Women are sitting pretty in fifth place in the Women’s Super League. For a team that is only in its second season back in the top tier, the Reds are performing very admirably, remaining in the top half of the table through the new year.

As a reward for their success, manager Matt Beard won the WSL Manager of the Month for December. In that month, Liverpool played two WSL games. They drew at home to Bristol City, but then came from behind the beat Manchester United away.

Additionally, though, Liverpool also played against Everton in the fourth group stage game of the Continental Cup. They beat their hometown rivals 2-1 then as well. This still doesn’t do much for their chances in that competition. The Everton match was their first win, following three consecutive losses. However, a game against Everton is a game against Everton. And if nothing else, Liverpool currently sit above them in their group.

About his team’s performances, Beard told the official site, “Obviously a draw at home against Bristol City, followed that up with a dominant victory over Everton in the Continental Cup – it was a tough campaign for us in that competition this year, but I think we used it really well for younger players and to get minutes into players.”

After nearly a month off for the winter, the Reds return on Sunday to once again take on Bristol City away, this time in the fourth round of the FA Cup. After that, they’ll have huge WSL games in consecutive weekends against Manchester City and Arsenal, who are both above them on the table.

Earning any points in those two games could be season-defining for the Reds, so we’re set for an exciting jump into the new year.
