Liverpool Women have had yet another game cancelled, this time due to weather conditions rather than the incredibly frustrating pitch conditions at Prenton Park. Rather than spend all day thinking about what could have been at this Merseyside Derby (we would have won at Goodison Park and no one can tell me otherwise), why not celebrate Niamh Charles’ journey from a baby Red to forward extraordinaire?
There’s something magical about watching Liverpool players talk about growing up supporting the team, and Charles is no different: her childhood heroes were Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher, and she dreamt about having moments like they had. Of course, it hasn’t exactly been an easy journey and Charles speaks about playing with boys teams and the reception she received as a kid and as a teenager.
The entire video is obviously worth at least a couple of watches, but possibly the best bit is Charles talking about how it was incredible to go from buying Liverpool and England kits to having them “given to [her], not as something [she could] wear at home but as something to wear when [she] played football matches.”
Hopefully we get to see Charles and the Liverpool squad play again soon, on a pitch and in conditions that do them and their journeys justice.
