Rachel Furness: “We Need to Manage the Game Better”

It wasn’t the best of times, nor was it the worst of times when Liverpool Women managed to eke one point from their game at Lewes FC this weekend. Liverpool dominated most of the game but two lapses in defending on the counter attack saw Lewes net two goals and end the game with a draw. The players seem to share that view completely, with Rachel Furness saying as much after the match ended.

“I think we dominated most of the game but we need to manage the game a bit better as we went ahead twice,” Furness said. “We only have to look at ourselves and come back stronger next week by not letting teams back in again.”

“There are always aspects of our game we need to improve on. As a team and individuals, I think a lot of us can build on today’s performance and try to take the positives out of it as we have to continuously move forward. Lewes haven’t conceded many goals this season and we scored two goals away from home which is a big positive.”

“Overall, I thought we played some good football at times but we need to regroup and games are coming thick and fast,” she added. Liverpool will take on Manchester City in the FA WSL Cup this Wednesday before meeting Sheffield United at home this weekend.

Hopefully by then the team have had time to recuperate from this loss and Vicky Jepson has worked something out in terms of optimal partnerships. Our hope is that we’ll see more than just a few minutes of Babajide, Clarke, Furness, and Lawley together on the pitch before too long.
