Vicky Jepson is attempting to shore up the midfield for the second half of the season with the signing of central midfielder Rachel Furness. The 31-year-old Northern Ireland international signed from Reading, where she had been on loan with Tottenham Hotspur this season.
The versatile player also has experience as a winger and striker, though her preferred position is in the center of the pitch. She’ll don the number 27.
This deal won’t exactly set the world on fire, but it says something about the state of the women’s team that it’s exciting that they’re doing any business at all to try and help their squad.
About her new home, Furness said, “I’m really excited to have signed for Liverpool, it’s such a massive club and I can’t wait to get going. There’s such a talented squad here. The league position at the moment isn’t what they’d like but I can see the talent in the squad and I’m hoping to add to that and help the Reds move up the table.
“I can’t wait to get started, I just want to hit the ground running and bounce into that first game on January 5.”
Jepson was enthusiastic about the signing.
“This is a player who we’ve been keen on for quite a while and I’m delighted to welcome her to the club,” she said.
“The second half of this season is going to be a very important one for us and her experience and leadership qualities in the middle of the park will be valuable assets.”
