Liverpool’s attack comes very much from behind. Their whole style of play starts at the back, and that means that all of our defensive players have to know how to move the ball in a dynamic and efficient way. The inclusion of our fullbacks have been a recent and much needed surprise, too, as Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson have made themselves influential in that process.
Notching 23 assists together this year, though, is unheard of - becoming the first defensive duo to rack up more than 10 assists in Premier League history. Their assists led to some fantastic goals that helped Liverpool towards their historic 97 points in the league this year, and the club put together a wonderful little video compiling all 23 assists into one place.
It was never about breaking records for our fullbacks, as it was always more about helping the team more than anything else, but they of course added a little bit of fun to it as well.
“We have private competitions that drive each other on because we enjoy seeing each other doing well,” Robertson said ahead of the Champions League final.
”I get as much buzz at seeing him assist a goal or making a goalline challenge than I do for myself.”
Trent ended up winning the competition by one assist this year, but there’s plenty of time for both them to try and rack up a bit more next season.
