With veteran Liverpool defender Joël Matip out with an ACL injury for the rest of the season and his contract coming to the end in July, Jürgen Klopp may be on the hunt for another central defender to partner with captain Virgil van Dijk.
One name being touted is Benfica’s 20-year-old player, Antonio Silva. The promising young defender has the interest of much of world football, however, with his greatest admirers currently Manchester United. Raphael Varane is said to be moving on, and apparently United want Silva as his replacement.
Another team said to be testing the waters is Real Madrid. They are looking for help in defense because of an injury to David Alaba.
Benfica manager Roger Schmidt has maintained that their star will not be going anywhere in the January transfer window. However, Silva does have a €100m (£88m) release clause in his contract that a team could trigger, should they be that interested in him.
Right now, Liverpool have Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konaté, Joe Gomez, and promising youngster Jarell Quansah available to make it through the rest of the season. The problem is that Konaté and Gomez are not exactly well known for their long term fitness. If one of them goes down, there will be troubles for the Reds. With Liverpool currently sitting atop the league table and still active in four competitions, Klopp may prioritize bringing in extra resources so that they don’t waste this massive opportunity for more trophies.
It’s hard to find quality deals in the January market, and Liverpool don’t do much business in the winter, but they’ve shown that they will open their pocketbooks if it’s necessary.
